I
t’s snook season in Florida, and despite a closure to harvest for much of the state’s west coast, the next couple months offer great action in the world’s best location to target the state’s most iconic inshore/ nearshore gamefish. Snook strike aggressively, fight hard and grow large—into the 20and 30-pound range of true slob snook. The Florida state record weighed 45.75 pounds. It was caught by Heather Lynn Conners near Sebastian in 2015. But even the slot fish—those in the 28- to 33-inch range you’re allowed to keep one of—will test your gear. It’s one of the most explosive and exciting gamefish on the planet. Snook are extremely temperature sensitive, and tactics vary according to the season. From the beaches and nearshore, where they spend their summers, they will move over the next few months seeking warmer water in sheltered winter haunts. First, you’ll find them in deep water adjacent to the shallow flats. Then, driven by cooling sea temps, they’ll push all the way up into the creeks and rivers, residential canals, warm water discharge from power plants, upper estuaries, and anywhere they can find suitable water conditions. The harsher the winter, the more pronounced the move. Fall through winter is the time when big, line-snapping snook will hunker down in areas that might seem highly unlikely to the uninformed. With the mild winters of the last decade, much has been made of the northward spread of snook. A tropical species, they historically thrived only on the southern coasts of Florida, up to about to about Sebastian in the Atlantic and Tampa in the Gulf. However, in recent years, snook have set up shop farther north, in areas that would have been unheard of a decade ago. These days, it’s possible to target snook at Homosassa and farther north along the Nature Coast of the Gulf and up toward Jacksonville in the Atlantic. They have also shown up much farther north. This summer, Coastal Angler Magazine reported on a juvenile snook caught in a cast net way up in Winyah Bay, South Carolina. First timers seeking to do battle with snook should hire a captain. Along with being big and strong, large female snook are notoriously smart and usually require specialized tackle, techniques and a good deal of patience. Their tendency to hole up in the structure of mangroves, rocks and bridge and pier pilings makes break-offs common, and the expertise of a good guide increases your chances of actually landing one. The good news is, snook have been relatively unmolested by anglers during the closed season of the last three months. Now is as good a time as any to fool a big cow nosed into the current under some residential canal dock. They feed best in low light of the early mornings and late evenings when there’s a rising or falling tide. The stronger tides around the new and full moons are optimal for catching them. Keep that in mind when booking your trip to Florida’s snook fisheries, and you could find yourself experiencing the fishing trip of a lifetime.

While the size and numbers of fish that have been coming out of this area has been nothing short of amazing, they are heavily pressured. Finding and catching the bigger fish isn’t just as easy as pulling up to a buoy and tossing shrimp out. Understanding their seasonal movements, feeding habits and their locations around deeper structures that hold fish, makes all the difference. These guides know how to read conditions and account for tide and wind currents and know how to piece it all together and time the day perfectly. This puts clients in the best position for success. GOLDEN CRAPPIE CAUGHT IN ARKANSAS

avid Allen Sisson, of Magnolia, Arkansas, caught a fish on July 27 that few anglers have ever seen or even heard of: a golden crappie. Sisson was vertical jigging a brushpile at the 3,000-acre Columbia County, Ark. water supply reservoir when he caught the unusual fish. “The pictures still don’t do it justice,” Sisson said. “It was amazing, and I just feel blessed to have caught it.” Arkansas Game and Fish Commission District Fisheries Supervisor and avid crappie angler Andy Yung also was excited to hear about the catch. “I had never seen a golden crappie in my life,” Yung said. “I’ve read about them, but it’s something you just never see in the wild.” Yung explained the gold coloration is caused by a genetic mutation called Xanthism, similar to what causes a rare animal to be an albino or the black pigmentation in some extremely rare cases of deer and other animals. Xanthic crappie not only are lottery-drawing rare, but their coloring can hinder their ability to survive. These sorts of animals usually stand out from the others and are typically eaten by predators long before they reach maturity. Sisson said his golden catch didn’t end up in a frying pan, but has been taken to a taxidermist in Magnolia to mount.

his summer has definitely been a hot one, and the Dog Days are just beginning. s the summer season draws to a close, now is a great time to head to your favorite fishing spot. If you can get away midweek, all the better. Whether you get there by boat or on foot, you are likely to have your destination all to yourself. For some anglers and boaters, their attention has been drawn away from the water and on to other pursuits. Kids are back in school; deer season kicks off; and football fever has begun. Even if you are limited to only getting away on weekends, you are still unlikely to come across crowds. Labor Day Weekend is the exception of course, which also happens to be the unofficial end of summer for many, despite the continuation of warm weather well into fall here in the South. Summer does not officially end, meteorologically speaking, until the third week in September, September 23rd of this year to be exact, with the arrival of the autumnal (fall) equinox, when the sun passes over the equator and the amount of day equals the amount of night. If you hadn’t noticed, the days having been slowly getting shorter since June 21st, this year’s summer solstice and the longest day of the year, when the sun was at its highest and most northern point in the sky. And, in case you are now wondering, the “shortest” day of the year in 2019 will be December 22nd, the winter solstice, when the sun will reach its lowest point in the sky for those of us who live in the Northern Hemisphere. But let’s not talk about the arrival of winter just yet. My point here is simply that there is plenty of time and warm weather to be enjoyed. Don’t let all the other distractions that come with the arrival of fall cause you to miss out on some of the best time to be on the water. Grab your gear and kayak or hitch up your boat and head to the ramp. Go visit your favorite fishing spot or that quiet little cove and enjoy the solitude.

he dog days of summer are here, and the fishing is HOT. The surface temperatures are hovering around 85 degrees and the lake is a foot and a half below full pool. The fish have been very cooperative to date and we are witnessing some of the best catches of the entire year. The live bait bite has been replaced with a trolling bite. Employing both umbrella rigs set 120 feet back and lead-core lines (7-8) colors back with bucktail jigs and swimbaits have produced nice fish. The midmorning Jennifer with some nice hybrids power-reeling bite has also kicked into gear and is by far my favorite way to hook into a striped freight train. e have a brief top water bite going on right now and I look for this to get better and longer as we move into September. For those of you that have never seen hybrid bass schooling and busting shad on top water, it is intense to say the least. I had a discussion with Henry Cowen recently about this as it relates to fly fishing. Henry “has been pursuing striped bass on both fly and light tackle for over 30 years,” and in my opinion is the authority to taking stripers and hybrids on a fly. Before I moved to lake Oconee, I booked a trip with Henry on Lake Lanier and he very quickly put me on a school of rising stripers. My heart was pounding through my chest (just like buck fever)! When I cast to them, I proceeded to make the worst casts I have ever made. I simply wasn’t prepared to stay calm and cast well at 50 to 70 feet. Now that I have lived on Oconee and guided for hybrids and stripers myself for several years, I have a few suggestions for those wanting to succeed in the challenge of taking these fish on the fly. • This ain’t trout fishing and you need to be able to cast at least 50 feet with an 8-weight rod and line, preferably 70 feet. Practice on land using a double haul between two long tape measures or string four feet apart. Start at 30 or 40 feet and maintain tight loops and control the cast then add distance until you are comfortable at greater distances. • Get a stripping bucket, I use a large standup type from Strip and Feed Research. I keep the rod in the basket with 50 feet of line already stripped so when the fish boil up, I just grab the rod, make one or two false casts at them most and I am on the fish. • Henry suggested having an angler that is very excited at seeing so many rising fish pick a target rise and have the angler close their eyes and cast. • Lastly, and this will not make fly fishing purists happy, I believe catching one or two on light spinning tackle first will help ease the pressure. And, since this topwater explosion usually does not last long, I like to have my customers close out their trips using spinning rods with spoons when the fish go deep or long lining for some crappie. • Remember this is a challenge and a measure of skill under pressure. The reward of getting a striper or hybrid on a fly is an incomparable rush!
Hybrids / Stripers – As I mentioned above, we have had a very early topwater bite for hybrids and stripers. You need to be on the water by 6:00 AM and most likely it will be over a little after 7:00 AM. If Georgia power is pumping, you will have fun! Simply cast a popping cork and fly or a small white spoon at the rises and you will catch fish. This bite will get longer and better in September. Crappie – Long lining will work early in the morning, but you must be fishing over submerged timber. When you do, if you keep your eye on your electronics you will see that the crappie will be bunched up on a few trees in an area of submerged timber. Once you find the fish, you can drop a buoy marker and go back and drop minnows on them. Final words –I offer combination trips, so you can fly fish and use spinning rods for light tackle fun! Lake Report & Forecast LAKE HARTWELL fish will start moving shallower. Stripers and hybrids are mostly in the mid to lower Lake. The biggest concentrations of fish are close to the dam area. This is the area that has the best water quality of the whole lake. They will stay in this area until the water starts cooling in late September. Then they will start roaming and feeding shallower. Blue back herring on a Carolina rig works great. Lower the bait to the fish and hold on. Big spoons and big jig heads with swim baits work too. Using artificial lures takes more work to entice a reaction strike. I always have a top water plug rigged this time of year. You never know when they will come up chasing herring at the surface. Largemouth and spotted bass also go deeper in the summer. Some people say the bass migrate toward the lower lake in the summer. I do see more in the lower lake during the heat of summer. They gang up on brush piles, 20 to 30 feet deep. Spotted bass school like stripers and if you can find a school of spots, there may be many of them in a group. They seem to get into larger groups as the summer wears on. September sees the crowds go away. With school, football, hunting, and other interests, the lake gets quiet. The fish are still eating with no one around.

lenty of fish can be caught on Lake Russell in late summer. We generally start at first light while it is still cool. We try to be off the water before it gets too hot. Bass – Largemouth and spotted bass can be caught by fishing Ansley in Perfect Form drop shot and shaky head worms in 20-25 feet of water. Try to find some brush on flats or points in that depth. There is also some schooling activity in these same areas. Be ready with a small topwater lure. The DNR has done a great job in bringing the numbers of largemouth back into Lake Russell. We have seen some impressive schools of largemouth this summer. Crappie – Crappie are on brush piles in coves off the main lake in 20-25 feet of water. They can be caught on minnows dropped right in the brush. Expect to catch bass, perch, and catfish along with the crappie. Stripers – September is one of the best months all year to target a big striper in Lake Russell. Fish a live herring at the depth the fish are holding. This depth can vary greatly depending on which area of the lake you are fishing. As a general rule fish 30-40 feet on the lower end and 2030 feet on the upper end. eptember is typically a transition month for catfish on Clarks Hill Lake. They will be scattered, some will start to move deep, some shallow, and all in between. Despite being scattered, the fishing can often be pretty good if you can find the right group. The thermocline is usually a factor on what depth range the fish will be in. For example, if the thermocline is 35 feet deep in the section of the lake you are in, then you are wasting your time fishing any deeper than that. Look for the fish to be shallower than 35 feet deep in that situation, Robert with a big September blue catfish whether that be humps that top out at that depth, flats in the depths, or large coves and creek runs that have the same water depth. One of the easiest ways to determine the depth of the thermocline if you are not sure how or what to look for on your graph is this. If you notice a very narrow depth range that all the baitfish and larger, predatory fish are holding in and there’s not many above that range and virtually none below it, then that lets you know that is the most comfortable zone and that is often where the thermocline is. Anchoring on the humps and points at the depth range (and shallower) where the thermocline is located is the best bet. Cut herring, gizzard shad and live bream are the best baits to use. Use herring to get fish of all sizes in the boat and gizzard shad and live bream to target larger blues and flatheads. Being patient and sitting in a spot for up to an hour and a half or more will sometimes pay off big for the bigger fish.

It was a spectacular fishing day! My fishing partner, Bradley Carter, and I started out at the North Augusta boat landing at 6:00 A.M. We started fishing past the 13th Street Bridge on the South Carolina side of the river on the deeper banks with sporadic grass patches. Bradley and I had both had success on the beaver or bug type baits like a bandito bug the previous week. On this day it seemed that the pattern had changed, so I decided to pick up my ultralight rod with my usual SuperSpin on it and tied on a dropshot. If you’re not familiar with a dropshot, it is a finesse technique that includes the following components; 1/0 Gamakatsu dropshot hook, 1/4-ounce dropshot weight, and a four-to six-inch finesse worm of your choice. In this case I used a watermelon seed color Zman Finesse WormZ. A dropshot is super simple to rig. You start by tying your hook with a palomar knot with a long tag end. Then, run that tag end through the top of the hook eye while holding the hook in the orientation you want it to hang. Next, attach the weigh to the tag end leaving a 12-18-inch gap between the hook and weight. Finally, hook your worm through the nose with your 1/0 Finesse Gap hook. With this rig, Bradley and I began to catch fish after fish, so many so that we lost count of the number of fish we had caught which was more than thirty. The best part of this rig is that we fished it in many different areas such as rocks in the rapids to catch smallmouth on deep grassy banks to largemouth, jack fish or southern
pike. Later in the day we targeted deep rocky banks in the bends of the river where the water slows with a Googan Bait Mondo worm rigged on a 5/0 round bend Gamakatsu with a half-ounce Tungsten weight pegged. This approach landed us more quality fish than the dropshot, but not near the numbers we had caught earlier. ater temperature - 82 degrees Lake level - full pool Clarity - clear Bass - The bass bite has been really good this summer compared to years past. We seem to have a very healthy population of spotted bass and largemouth bass. Most of the largemouth bites have been earlier in the day. These fish are holding close to structure (docks, brush piles) in the 9-to 20-foot depths. We have had good success using swim baits and prop baits (Duo Realis) for the bigger fish. Work these baits a little slower this time of year. These fish are not quick to take the bait but are typically bigger bass. The spotted bass bite has been great on and near the main lake channels. The spots are doing their normal routine following the schools of blue-back herring up and down the lake. Fishing long points with brush and grass has been most effective. A drop shot rig with a white or Pumpkin Seed Senko has been the go-to bait. These fish are holding on an 18-to 25-foot bottom. Look for these fish to start transitioning a little shallower over the next few weeks as we head towards October. Yellow Perch - The yellow perch bite has been consistent lately. We have caught perch in eight feet and 20 feet of water. Most of the fish we have been catching have been caught on crappie jigs or small Robo worm drop shot rigs. Look for the grass beds in the backs of the creeks. Having a good fish finder really helps finding the grass and perch. We use both structure scan and a regular fish finder. Some creeks have more grass than others. This is where I would concentrate on finding the bigger yellow perch. Good Luck!

Conservation SAVE THE STURGEON THIS SEPTEMBER
S
avannah Riverkeeper says: September is Sturgeon Awareness Month! The nonprofit is running an education campaign to teach people about the unique, endangered fish that is found— or supposed to be—right here in the Savannah River. Two species, the Atlantic and the Shortnose Sturgeon, are historically found in the area and are listed as federally endangered. Sturgeon travel from the ocean and coastal channels where they live out most of their days to the river shoals where they come to spawn each year. Long threatened and depleted by habitat loss and overfishing, efforts are now bringing this prehistoric fish back to its natural home. Efforts in place to preserve and restore these fish, primarily through NOAA Fisheries (the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) include designation, then protection, of critical habitat; take limits for permitted projects; and other regulation on fishing. Meanwhile, conservation groups advocate for local projects to restore water flows through dam removals, fish passages, and more. It’s hopeful that the species will rebound, but they are still very imperiled and face an “upstream” battle. Conservation groups and biologists agree, however, that efforts to save sturgeon will also have positive effects on other species that historically rely on a similar spawning path. Anadromous fish (which means they move from river to sea) like shad and striped bass or striper likewise benefit from efforts to conserve habitat and restore free-flowing waterways. “Our guiding goals as waterkeeper organizations are to work for drinkable, swimmable, and fishable waters,” said Savannah

Riverkeeper Tonya Bonitatibus. “We want people to understand that healthy fisheries are home to strong populations of species. When managed sustainably, they are capable of supporting communities and economy in a way that the whole system thrives.” Know the Law Before You Fish Both Atlantic and Shortnose Sturgeon are protected by the Endangered Species Act, which means it is illegal to fish for, catch, or keep sturgeon or their parts. If you happen to catch a specimen which is responsive and lively, remove the hook or cut the line and return the fish to the water immediately. If possible, try to keep it submerged and the belly supported. Did you know you can save a sturgeon’s life with just a water hose? If the fish is trapped in fishing line, net, or another impediment and looks lethargic or unresponsive, you should try to help it. Oftentimes, it is possible to resuscitate these fish by flushing water over the gills. Position a hose through the mouth and slightly to the side, not down the throat. Let the water run gently but steadily out and over the gills, as if the fish were swimming forward, until recovery is obvious. by Kim Nunery Ingredients 1 cup flour 2 tablespoons lemon Juice 1 egg, slightly beaten 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon Cajun seasoning (optional) 1/4 cup yellow cornmeal 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 4 catfish fillets 3 tablespoons vegetable oil Directions: Pat fish dry with paper towels. Place 1 cup flour in shallow bowl, set aside. Combine the lemon juice and slightly beaten egg in another shallow bowl, set aside. In a larger bowl mix the 1/2 cup flour and 1/4 cup yellow cornmeal with Cajun seasoning, garlic powder and salt. Dip the catfish in the first bowl of flour, then the egg wash, then the cornmeal mixture. Let rest for 10-20 minutes. In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Fishing and Hunting Perspective BURNING THE MIDNIGHT OIL
T
he stars are out, the crickets are chirping, and the moon is shining down on a glittery bass boat… Where are you? If you’re anything like me, you are right in the middle of it all. Whether it’s taking place at a hotel parking lot out of town or simply in your driveway, there is something to be said about burning the midnight oil getting ready for a day out on the water. Now sometimes boat prep starts as a parking lot party with a bunch of buddies gathered around all the boats, tying on lures, making sure all the batteries are charging, and just enjoying the company of those around you. Even though some great memories are made that way, the group fun always winds down at some point when it’s time to turn in for the night. Right then and there, I find an extremely rewarding opportunity. Staying out with the boat after everything around you has settled down lets your mind work through every thought that could possibly pop into your head. Maybe it’s thinking through a day of tournament practice or scheming up tomorrow’s game plan on the water; either way, there is a certain sense of freedom and peace that comes over you. In that moment it’s you, the man upstairs, and… well, that’s about it. Now some might be thinking how on earth could all that solitude be enjoyable, but trust me, it is. Besides, it’s not like you don’t get to talk to anyone. Sometimes an angler just has to think out loud. Weird? Of course not. Someone has to give you expert advice, right? It all goes beyond the simple relaxation of solitude though. What else
would make a person want to stay up into the dark hours of the night other than doing what you love? I fully believe that as anglers and outdoorsmen in general we are among the most passionate and determined people on earth. There isn’t much that we wouldn’t do to protect and pursue our passion in life. You better believe that a passionate angler is going to ensure every knot tied is perfect, every tackle tray is in its place, and the boat’s gel coat finish is shining bright for that morning sunrise reflection. So, is all this time spent prepping the boat a bit excessive? Maybe… But you know as well as I do that nothing about it is going to change. Life is too short to not enjoy the little things. Sure, you may look a little strange if someone looks out the window and sees you talking to yourself or even talking to your boat in the middle of the night, but who cares? It’s your passion and it makes you happy. Now stop reading this and go prep that boat of yours no matter what hour of day or night it is. Get out there and burn the midnight oil! Tight Lines!

How to… FISHING AND HUNTING BY THE NUMBERS
F
or us outdoors enthusiasts, fall offers an abundance of opportunities to spend time in the woods and on the water. Cooler temperatures will start the fishing frenzy on our lakes and coastal waters. And the shorter amount of daylight will soon bring on the deer rut. The dilemma is whether to pack fishing rods or hunting gear in the truck. For me, it’s a pretty easy decision. And with the game and fish activity prediction tools we have today, you can plan your time in the woods or on the water, so it is the most productive. I think we’d all agree fish and deer have seasonal, solunar and weather-related patterns that generate more, or less, activity…both day and night. Most fish have seasonal patterns that cause them to be in one type of environment in the spring, and another in the fall. For some, like the mackerels, cobia and others, their migration up and down the coast

follows their food sources, and their spawning cycles. For others it may be because they are looking for more comfortable surroundings, like water temperature and the amount of available dissolved oxygen. And two other factors are moon phase and tidal influences. These two factors are predictable years in advance. So, remember that. For deer, they too are continually browsing for food. As the fall approaches, their menu evolves from eating all your flowers and shrubs to feasting on acorns and wild grapes. Similarly, the photoperiod…the amount of light in a given day…affects when the rut will occur in a given area. As the amount of light each day is reduced, going into winter, this causes hormonal changes in both bucks and does and the rut results. Most experts suggest moon phase has less to do with deer activity this time of year, compared to the photoperiod. Depending on where you live (or hunt), the rut can be predicted within a few days usually. And of course, that’s the time you want to be in the woods. So, for me, I do a lot of my fall hunting and fishing “By the Numbers.” I can use the tide tables and solunar tables to plan my fishing trips. And I can use sources like the Quality Deer Management Association to get the best intel for when the rut will be in full swing for the area of the country I plan to hunt. There are numerous apps that offer Game and Fish Tables based on the solunar charts and other data. And, I’ve found them to be pretty darn accurate. Weather is one factor we can’t seem to predict, and it does have an effect on both big game and fish. Frontal systems can shut down both the fishing and deer movement. High winds and heavy rain will cause deer to bed down until things settle down. Cold and snow, or heat and humidity don’t seem to bother the deer as much as it does us hunters. Weather fronts can give fish lockjaw, but that’s usually due to barometric pressure changes associated with approaching storm fronts. And since fish are already wet, rain doesn’t bother them…nor do they experience the effects of wind like land-based critters do. The net-net is I can hunt AND fish in the fall. I do my homework and try to plan my trips based on the best science I can obtain. Nothing is a sure-fire guarantee, but it usually works out ok. And there will be times when it looks like a great weekend for both fishing and hunting. Then it’s a coin toss. But the by-product of doing some ‘plan-ahead’ research is that I can have both venison and tasty filets in the freezer to last me through the winter. Tight lines and calm seas.

ASCAR teams race all over America with each race in a different location stretching from California to North Carolina. Each team has different cars and different packages for each weekly race. Since I have been tournament fishing, I have learned to set up my tackle and processes around the different lakes I fish, sort of the same way the NASCAR teams do when they are traveling around the country. You will sometimes hear teams in NASCAR say they have to set the car to Daytona or for Talladega specifications. They know that by doing so, they have a better chance of performing well at the race. You can too, as it will help you save time and money, and help build your confidence when on the water. In my tackle storage area, I have lots to choose from, which can be overwhelming at times. Lucky for me, I tend to fish a lot of the same lakes in the Southeast and have developed a system that works for me. For each lake I fish, I know that I’ll be fishing it either in the spring, summer or fall, primarily. Knowing that the fish in certain lakes are going to be in certain places makes it easier to understand what the fish may be doing. Let’s say, for instance, that its springtime here in the Southeast and I’m fishing Lake Oconee. I opt for my Oconee package, just like the NASCAR teams do when they go to different tracks. When I refer to lake package, I mean setting everything up to be successful; my boat, motor, rods, reels and tackle. All these items will play a role in what lake I’m fishing. I have containers of baits labeled Lake Oconee I know that I will primarily use when fishing this lake. On this lake I know that I’ll be throwing a Kip Carter Crankbait, a Strike King Sexy Dawg topwater plug, a Fish Head Primal Vibe bladed jig bait and a Fish Head M1 jig. Of course I’ll have other baits, but I know that these particular baits always put fish in the boat. I have found that I’m much more efficient when I’m fishing from one package to the next. Sometimes I find myself needing a bait or particular color that the fish seem to like.. If this happens, I head over to the local tackle shop and grab a few packs. Now I have something new that I can use in this lake moving forward. Setting up your tournament as a lake package helps save a ton of money and time. It saves time because I’m not spending extra time sorting out baits and different tackle. I know I have all the things I need to be successful. I save money by not carrying a lot of baits and extra tackle that I don’t use, which saves gas. It also frees up needed space. It’s incredible how much excess weight you can haul around in the boat and truck. Taking a play out of the NASCAR playbook by setting up my fishing tournament in packages has allowed me to save time, money and space. Think about using a method that will enable you to be more confident in the lakes you fish and concentrate on catching fish rather than thinking about a million other options. leader, in cold water, warm water, flowing water, in bays over oyster bars, under docks, around bridges, twin tails, straight tails, and on and on and on. No other category will allow you to place your bait as deep into the trees, brush, blow-downs, under heavy lily pads, under docks and docked boats, to hook and catch the bass that live there. When I was younger, I often angled for spotted bass in the clear waters of Georgia’s Lake Lanier. It was my home lake and I boastfully considered myself an expert on catching those finny little critters and the special ways to catch them from the deep clear waters. I don’t get there as often now. Anyway, it was during those old-time days of drawing for partners during tournaments. Being local, I drew a non-boater. He was an experienced largemouth bass fisherman, but his experience was on a stained water lake with shallow targets. During the day we spent together, he relinquished his time in the front of the boat to me and we fished ‘my water’ so to speak. What happened is a good illustration of using the versatility of plastics for a specific species. I used six-pound test line on a spinning reel rigged with a size one hook and a six-inch light green straight worm at thirty-five to forty feet with my boat stationed in twenty feet of water and casting out to the brush, deep trees, ledges and drops. He used seventeen-pound test line and an eight-inch worm. My technique caught fifty-one keepers, culled down for tenth place out of 110 boats. He caught one fish and chose not to weigh in. He wasn’t a bad guy, just a bit stubborn. Using an eight-inch worm and half-ounce bullet weight, he couldn’t feel the bite of the spots and they couldn’t and wouldn’t bite that big worm well enough to get caught. You have to use small baits for spots. Same fish, same lake, same cover, different result. It was a cloudy day at Lake Russell, and I was just becoming familiar with the lake and the rivers and streams that feed it. I don’t remember the name of the creek, but it was large and wide with many coves and branches feeding it. Remembering it for a moment, it’s the first creek to the right north of the bridge on Highway 72. In looking around, in and out of the coves, I noticed a single tiny tree top limb sticking no more than five inches above the surface in the center of a deep cove. Casting a watermelon colored plastic lizard usually used on points and flats, I caught twenty-seven largemouth bass up to four pounds on twenty-seven straight casts, getting most of the bites from four feet to 20 feet out of a tree over a 60-foot bottom. The bass were schooled in the top third of the tree. Would any other category of bait allow that? Crank baits or spinnerbaits that would not get hung up and likely spook the school? Any bait with exposed hooks? Any bait to cover a 16foot water column? Probably not. Keep a few rods rigged with — O’Neill Outside O’Neill Williams plastics and have fun fishing.

TRANSITION FROM SUMMER TO FALL BASS FISHING

W
here I grew up, fishing is a lifestyle. I would fish Southern farm ponds and creeks day-in and day-out every summer, no matter the weather conditions. As I began to get a little older and experienced, I realized that fishing for a big bass as summer comes to a close was a little different than fishing in the cooler temperatures of fall. There’s lots of variables that come into play when figuring out how to catch fish during this time of year. A lot of your success can depend on what type of water you’re fishing. Typically, fish tend to go to deeper depths of water in the summertime. Bass want to stay cool, and the deeper water offers less light penetration. During these months, bass will actually begin to school up on offshore ledges, and if you find one of these schools, you’ll likely have a successful day out on the water. Finding where the fish are located is only half the battle; knowing what baits to throw is also vital. For me, I have more success during the summer with slower presentations like Texas-rigs, football jigs, ned rigs and drop-shot rigs. Once things start to cool off, the fish do the total opposite when it comes to where they can be found. Instead of the fish schooling together, they tend to be spread out throughout a certain area, making the bite more random at times. A lot of the shad that also call these creeks and lakes home seek more shallow water, and the bass often follow them. In the part of the country where I’m from, I notice this transition during September and October when it starts to get a lot cooler out. The baits I throw in the fall also vary from those baits of the summertime. Buzzbaits, topwater walkin’ baits and others that can cover a lot of water are what I usually get bites with. Whether you’re just getting into bass fishing or are an experienced angler, knowing how the fish behave during certain times of year is essential for your success, and it’s not something everyone always thinks about. HYBRID STRIPERS STOCKED IN N.C.’S HYCO LAKE
T
he N.C. Wildlife Resources C om m i s s i on is offering anglers a unique opportunity to catch hybrid striped bass in Hyco Lake with an initial stocking of 37,500 fingerlings. This 3,750-acre lake south of the Virginia border in Person and Caswell counties was pegged by biologists as suitable for a hybrids, or Bodie bass, because of its warm year-round water temperatures, a wide forage base and ample depth for this deep, open-water species. The fish are expected to reach harvestable size within the next year or two. Bodie bass regulations on Hyco will be four fish a day with a 16-inch minimum length. Bodie bass are a cross between striped bass and white bass. They grow larger than white bass and withstand higher water temperatures than striped bass. “Adult Bodie bass are a schooling fish typically found in open water searching for shad or other prey fishes. In Hyco Lake, tilapia may provide an additional food source not found in other reservoirs in the state,” said District 5 Fisheries Biologist Kelsey Lincoln. “This possible predator-and-prey interaction could make for some fun fishing opportunities.” Bodie bass are captured using various angling techniques including trolling, artificial lures and live bait. While Bodie bass do not grow as large as striped bass do, they commonly reach 5 pounds. Next summer, Commission staff will stock additional Bodie bass fingerlings in the lake at a rate between five and 10 fish per acre. Biologists will monitor the population to determine the success of the fishery and to update management recommendations.

Chasing The Dream

O
ver the last decade, tournament bass fishing has undergone some major changes for young anglers. From high school club teams to officially sanctioned tournament trails, the pursuit has been recognized and is being treated more and more like a traditional high school sport. The best young anglers earn college scholarships for fishing. North Carolina’s Trent Lawson, aka The Fish Nemesis, is a young angler with a dream of bass fishing on the big stage. “I think like a fish,” he said, and it’s that thought process that has given Trent a shot at living his dream. His dad first introduced him to fishing when he was 7 years old. “I didn’t like fishing at all,” Trent recalled. Later, though, he went with friends and realized he had found his passion.
He started fishing every week at a nearby farm pond. Eventually, a family friend introduced him to Lake Norman, north of Charlotte, N.C. From there, Trent knew he wanted to become a professional bass fisherman. He has set the course to make it happen. The bass fishing industry is tough. For most, the dream of fishing professionally is just that, a dream. Trent’s determination and confidence in his ability has kept him forging ahead. Trent’s high school did not have a fishing team, so he joined Patrick County High School’s team less than an hour from his home, but across the state line in Virginia. They welcomed him. Already well into their season, the team had one more qualifying event left. Trent and his teammate qualified for the Bassmasters High School Championship in Virginia and placed sixth in the state championship series. Trent also competes outside of school in other tournament trails. He has amassed at least 20 wins and numerous top-10 finishes. He is sponsored by Fishing Complete, the parent company of some of the industry’s top baits and terminal tackle. He also has a YouTube channel called “The Fish Nemesis,” where you can watch and learn from his fishing techniques. Not only is Trent intelligent at fishing, he is an honor roll student. He understands the difficult road of becoming a pro and values a good education. He needed to find a college with a fishing team. Trent’s dad contacted the fishing coach at Tennessee’s Bethel University to seek advice on scholarships and the fishing team. Bethel University was the first school to recognize bass fishing as an organized sport. The coach asked for Trent’s resume, offered his cell phone number and advised Trent to keep him posted. Trent texted his fishing accomplishments every week. Trent’s perseverance, hard work and excellent grades have resulted in a bass fishing scholarship offer from Bethel University. Trent plans to major in business and marketing. If he doesn’t become a professional angler, he intends to use his knowledge to possibly work in marketing for a bait company or start his own business. Remember the name Trent Lawson. He is on the path to bring his dream to fruition.

Bringing The Dead (Bait) Back To life

n case you don’t already know and do this, here’s a trick that can save a day in the absence of live bait. If you’re going bottom fishing and pinfish, sardines, pogies or the others are hard to find with a cast net or sabiki, hedge your bets by keeping a couple dozen fresh or frozen baits about the diameter of a softball, or larger, in the cooler. Even in freshwater, when live gizzard shad or skipjacks are nowhere to be found, a box of frozen baits can still entice catfish, striped bass and others. Dropping a whole dead bait down will get bites, but if you take a minute to “butterfly” them, these once dead baitfish come back to life in the current. No grouper or big snapper can resist them when presented properly. Grunts pinkies and seabass will hammer at it, and eventually get the hook, but grouper or anything else with a large enough mouth will simply inhale it. I’ve seen times when the bite would shut down, even with live bait, and a fresh butterflied beeliner (vermillion snapper) would get bit instantly. The two fillets of any given baitfish attached to the head, without the backbone and dorsal fins are just a little too much to resist for the big meat-eaters. Granted, it’s also big shark candy, but as Popeye would say, “You pays your money, you takes your chances.” Butterflying a bait is very simple. Anyone can go out and catch a pile of grunts, pinkies and seabass with small cut bait, but it’s no coincidence that the people who specifically go fishing for grouper are the ones that come home with the “brown fish” in the box. Don’t hesitate to butterfly a snapper or anything else you thought was once too large for bait. On the bottom, the smaller fish will hammer away at the two larger fillets, and out of nowhere a big gag
or red grouper will finish it off. A 1 ½-pound beeliner, pinkie or Spanish mackerel is the perfect candidate for this job. When you feel the little ones banging on it, sit tight and don’t set the hook. Wait for the big bite; there will be no question when it gets eaten instead of pecked at. Big butterflied mullet, spots and croakers are extremely effective inshore and nearshore for red or black drum. In freshwater, a butterflied bream, perch, crappie or other panfish is perfect for big catfish. To butterfly a bait, start at the tail and fillet each side up to just behind the head and out the gut area. Then grab the tail and break the backbone out just behind the head.
