Boaters and anglers up and down the east coast know there’s an important season between the holidays and spring: Boat Show Season! ottom fish anglers in the Atlantic from the coast of North Carolina south through the Florida Keys could soon be required to have Photo by Adrian Gray descending devices onboard and available for release of unwanted fish while fishing for snapper and grouper species. The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council approved the measure at its September meeting. If approved by NOAA Fisheries, the requirement will likely go into effect in late 2020. Additionally, the use of non-offset, non-stainless-steel circle hooks could be required. The new requirements are part of a package of “best practices” the council has been considering for the snapper and grouper fishery. It addresses the results of federal research that shows mortality rates of almost 30 and 40 percent for red snapper released by the recreational and commercial sectors, respectively. “The bottom line is that many important fish stocks are showing dead discard estimates that exceed catch (red snapper, black sea bass, gag and black grouper),” read a council meeting summary. “That means the data show that more fish are being released and dying than are able to be kept by fishermen.” The descending-device requirement is intended to increase chances of survival for released fish by decreasing the effects of barotrauma. he holiday season is here. Unless someone lives in a cave and has not had any contact with the outside world, the lead up to the holiday season is hard to miss. Holiday decorations seem to pop up in stores earlier and earlier every year. Advertisements are everywhere. Of course, for retailers it is all part of an elaborate effort to get us to buy gifts earlier and earlier and to spend more and more of our hard-earned dollars. The question is, will we bite? When will we bite? And, how big of a bite will we take? No one likes to miss out on a good holiday sale, especially when it comes to outfitting and updating gear for a favorite hobby or outdoor activity. Myself, I like to visit my favorite marine supplier. These days there are certainly a lot of discounts to be had by shopping online, but nothing beats the feeling of browsing the aisles of a favorite outfitter and sporting goods store this time of year to see the latest “must have” items up close in person. If you are at all like me, the temptation is real and it can be tough to resist the urge to buy something early for yourself, at a discounted price of course, with the plan of handing it over (temporarily) to a family member to hold until the designated time to exchange and unwrap gifts. After all, who knows better than you what is needed for your tackle box, boat, rifle, kayak, truck, etc., right? Sure, this approach may take some of the surprise out of the big day, but I offer that it is no less exciting and fun. It sure beats having to go through the awkwardness and hassle of dealing with gift returns. Think about it. Does your significant other really know what your boat or tackle box needs at any given moment? This is not to suggest that you shouldn’t appreciate a good holiday sweater as a gift if you get one! But seriously, how many does a person need? Aside from all the fun, and excitement surrounding giving gifts and enjoying a good meal, like most Americans, what I enjoy most about the holidays is spending time with family and friends. Whether enjoying a trip, taking in a new blockbuster movie, watching a parade or a big game, eating well at a holiday party, enjoying the season with good company, or finding a great deal on new gear, nothing beats this time of year. As of this report, the lake level is 324.6 feet and morning surface temperatures are still hanging around 68 degrees. We anticipate the water level to be low this winter. This gives the fish less room to hide but also presents more obstacles to avoid on the early morning runs. By mid-December, the baitfish and predators will can keep up with the migration. Lake Report & Forecast LAKE OCONEE December Forecast – Matching the hatch on Lake Oconee

o, the esteemed Henry Cowen (striper guide extraordinaire on Lanier) told me in his best Brooklyn accent not too long ago, “Wayne, you got to start tying your own flies for stripers and hybrids on Oconee.” The logic he explained is that you will be able to tie your fly to match the size of the baitfish that are present at a given time. If the threadfin shad they are feeding on are two inches long, you want a two-

inch fly. Conversely, if they are keyed in on one- and half-inch shad, they might reject a larger offering. I called The Fish Hawk and ordered # 4 hooks and all the materials I needed to tie the famous “Somethin Else” fly Henry invented. I also ordered a Loon UV light and glue to hold the bar bell eyes on these flies. Right now, on Oconee, the fish are feeding on the two-inch shad, so my guess is I’ll do better on the bottom fly shown in the picture. If you have not tried tying your own, give it a try. You can get everything you need at The Fish Hawk and they have classes there too. Hybrids / Stripers – The hybrid / striper bite is on, of course on Oconee it is mainly hybrids. Focus your efforts from below Highway 44 to the Richland Creek arm and north up to the area in front of the Ritz. There is no need to throw the cast net, large bass minnows work just fine. Down line the bass minnows or use a spoon when you see them on your electronics. You will likely see some large schools of bait and always drop a bait or spoon when you do. As we move into December, long lining the bass minnows will work well. Also, the “bird bite” will be here soon. When you see the birds dive bombing shad, get within casting range and you will have a blast. You can cast a spoon a long way, so you don’t spook the fish. Also, a Sassy Shad on a DOA jig head works great. If you want to go a little lighter, use a spinning rod with eight-pound test and throw a 1/6-ounce white rooster tale. You can get everything you need at Sugar Creek Marina. Finally, if you can cast a fly rod, use a wiggle minnow or better yet a “Somethin Else.” This time of year I prefer to use sink tip when using anything other than a wiggle minnow. Crappie – The crappie are moving off the brush piles and starting to scatter. This means long lining jigs behind the boat is easy and a great way to load the boat. The crappie can be found in the mouth of Lick Creek and as it gets cooler, they will move first up to the Sugar Creek area then north of I-20. When it gets colder in December, many anglers will switch to pushing rods out of the front of the boat; more on this in the January forecast. he water temperature is falling fast and soon Lake Russell will be in its true winter pattern. This means that the schools of bait will be lower in the water column and gathering in larger numbers. The predatory fish that feed on them will be close by. Seagulls have migrated back to our area lakes and are eager to help with the “fish finding” duties. They will be flying and diving over the most active fish. December is always a great month to put a mix of great tasting fish in the boat. The spotted bass, yellow perch, and white perch comprise most of the catch; however, largemouth bass, crappie, stripers, and catfish are a very real possibility. We will be dropping medium sized minnows and jigging spoons to the bottom to catch most of these fish. The action can be fast and furious, often in the middle of the day. We will have an A-rig ready to cast in the direction of any stripers that are feeding near the surface. I realize that everyone is very busy this month, and our priorities should be on spending Christmas with our family and friends. This time of year, they key in on small shad. Herring will still catch fish, especially Big Fish Brent Story from Atlanta with a big fish. I like catching striper caught on a bucktail jig fish on artificial lures, and this is a good time of year to do that. Fish move shallow and feed under the birds. Bucktail jigs and jig heads with flukes work for me. Hybrids and stripers feed shallow in low light. Early, late, and cloudy days see the most surface action. Bright, sunny days are best spent with a jigging spoon 30 to 40 feet deep. Look in creek channels and in backs of pockets. Bounce the jig up and down off the bottom. Feel for the hit on the fall. Bass will be caught using the same technique. Wear a life jacket if you fish alone. Have a plan to get back in your boat with wet clothes on. I have a ladder mounted on my transom. Hypothermia can turn you numb in less than a minute. Pick your days. he hustle and bustle of the holiday season is in full swing, and so is the great fishing in the delayed harvest sections of the rivers! Just prior to November 1, we received a great amount of rain and much cooler temperatures, and all rivers are in great shape. Many thanks to the Walhalla State Fish Hatchery for their tremendous work during the summer and fall heat waves, keeping all these fish in great health for us to enjoy in the rivers. The helicopter has flown, and stocking is continuing throughout the winter with plenty of fish to be caught. Below average temperatures have started us off, making it feel a little like winter here. No snow yet, but with continued below average temperatures, maybe a white Christmas? Colder temperatures mean the warmest water is near to river flow, and the fish move into the deeper pockets and runs. As the water temperatures warm during the day, the fish will migrate from the depths and into shallower areas of the river to feed. Early mornings and late afternoons, double nymph rigs, and adding split shot to get to holding areas of the fish will prove beneficial. During warmer days in December some dry fly action may be experienced, although it can be very sporadic. Dead-drifts and swinging fly rigs will bring the most success targeting the seams and deeper runs.

Winter streamer fishing is in full swing now. Big fish must eat, and why not throw them what they want. Smaller streamers work as well for those not interested in throwing big heavy streamers. In the case of the smaller streamers, with high water flows from winter rains, a pinch or two of weight may be necessary. On days of heavier flows on the river, a sink tip may be necessary to keep these streamers down in the water column to entice strikes. As we continue our work and appreciate everyone in their efforts to leave no trace on the rivers, we are starting to notice a reduction of remains in the river corridors, and it is the continued effort from all of us that will make this place beautiful for generations to come. UPPER SAVANNAH RIVER

eather: 57 degrees, clear, winds light. Water temperature: 63 degrees Water clarity: 95% clear / Current speed: 0-1 mph. Lure selection: Googan Bait Mondo Worm Green Pumpkin, Bill Lewis Rattle Trap Rayburn Red, Rapala Rip Stop Chrome Jerkbait. Sunday November 10th was a challenging fishing trip to say the least. I fished with Bradley Carter, a Biology major who studies at USC Aiken. We got off to a late start putting in at 10 a.m. at the North Augusta boat landing. Once we launched the boat, we decided to look for bait which should be moving to the back of the creeks as the water temperature drops. The first creek on the Georgia side down from the rapids was our first stop. Here we started flipping some structure with a Mondo worm. After just three or four flips, I felt a very slight tug and some weight which I though was probably grass, but hook sets are free, so I reeled down, swept the rod, and felt the fish digging towards the cover with my 12-pound Seaguar fluorocarbon. I led him away from the cover and swiftly boat flipped a two-pound beautiful largemouth bass. I thought we had a pattern figured out, but I was sadly mistaken. Fishing in the river with no

ater Temperature: 61 degrees Water level: full pool Water clarity: clear Bass - The bass bite was a little slow towards the beginning of November but has rebounded. We have been catching fish shallow and deep. Most of our bigger fish have come off a 10 to 15-foot bottom back in the creeks using a chrome jerk bait. We have also caught some nice largemouth throwing Sebile swim baits herring color. Look for these fish to start biting later in the morning over the next few weeks. The bite should transition into a deeper 25 to 30-foot of water spoon bite as soon as the water temperatures hit the 50’s mark. Trout - The trout bite has been great the last few weeks. We have been catching most of the fish around the shorelines throwing Rapala Countdowns and Little Cleo spoons. Brown trout like a fast retrieve so work the baits very rapid back towards the boat. Look for this pattern to hold over the next few weeks. Walleye - The walleye bite has just now started picking up with the cooler water temperatures. We have had the best success trolling small crawfish colored crank baits at a speed of two mph. We have also caught a few bigger fish trolling XD-15 crank baits. These bigger baits work best about 180 to 200 feet behind the boat. Look for the walleye over a 29 to 39-foot bottom close to structure (downed trees, and rocks). Look for this bite to get better every week as we head towards January. Thanks. Good Luck!

With no luck with our flipping pattern, at this point we switched gears and decided to try and fish some grass matts using a Rattle Trap Rayburn Red. Throwing the rattle trap in the grass matts is another productive technique this time of year. You will want to set up about a half a cast length from the grass, target mostly hydrilla in 3-5 feet of water. Keep the rattle trap just over the grass, pulsing it if the belly treble hook grabs the suspended hydrilla. Sometimes when you hook the grass and then pull it free, it causes a reaction bite from bass using the hydrilla for cover. Bradley used this technique to catch two bass to finish out our day. Spots are also biting crank baits but as a reminder this is a spotted bass lake now. Down lake use DT6 Rapala’s, #5 Shad Raps and medium Fat Free Shad crank baits down lake. Work the u-tail worms and jigs around the trees and docks and use a Texas rig. Work the backs of these docks as well as the bank cover and the sea walls on down the lake. Ned rigs are taking bass on the lake and green pumpkin Senkos are the right rigs. Conditions are fair up the river and a few small bass are taking a Senko on a drop shot rig. Make sure the baits are again, green pumpkin. Work the worm and jig around the trees and docks.

Nothing major, but the thrill of sneaking around and dabbling in these illegal activities excited me and I took to it like a duck to water. Unfortunately, I was good at it and before I knew it, I was moving up the scale to harder and harder drugs. This culminated in me ending up a full-blown drug addict with multiple trips to jail, rehab, halfway houses and being kicked out of my parents’ house more times than I can count. Finally, staring down the barrel of becoming a dad as my girlfriend at the time was pregnant, I realized that I was powerless over my addictions and that my life had become unmanageable. One month to the day before my son was born, I got sober and began my life anew at the age of 24. There’s a principle they teach you in recovery called arrested development. Basically, it says that when you get sober you are mentally and emotionally still the age you were when your addictions started. At 14 my development stopped, I had drugs to turn to when most people are learning to deal with hardships, loss or challenges. This was a hard lesson to learn while also trying to figure out being a dad and a new husband. My wife quickly realized I needed an outlet. That Christmas she gifted me a beginners Orvis fly rod outfit along much more than a sport or simple hobby, it’s a way of life. And it’s with a casting lesson from Rivers and Glen. I had never touched a a way of life that provided a road to recovery through the bonds of fly rod before and wasn’t even sure how to put the thing together. Ingredients 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 red onion, chopped 4 cloves garlic, minced 4 tablespoons dark brown sugar 3 cups red wine 4 tablespoons red wine vinegar 4 tablespoons tomato paste 4 cups low-sodium chicken broth 1 teaspoon ground cumin

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/2 teaspoon chili powder2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro salt to taste 4 tablespoons canola oil 10 slices cooked bacon, diced 2 pounds venison stew meat, trimmed and finely diced 2 cups black beans, cooked and drained

Directions: Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Stir in the onion and garlic and sauté for three to four minutes. Stir in the brown sugar and sauté for two to three more minutes. Then stir in the red wine, vinegar, tomato paste, chicken stock, cumin, cayenne pepper, chili powder, cilantro and salt. Simmer for 30 to 35 minutes or until the mixture is reduced by about half. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Stir in the bacon and fry for three to four minutes, or until the bacon is browned. Move the bacon to one side of the skillet and add the venison to the empty side of the skillet. Season the meat with salt-totaste and sauté the meat for 15 minutes or until well browned. Stir in the beans and toss all together. Transfer this mixture to the simmering pot. Mix everything together thoroughly and let simmer for about 20 more minutes.

We are reminded that some of the most enjoyable and miraculous aspects of this life are things over which we have little or no control; things we did not even create, but in some way, they bring calm to the mind, body and soul. Fishing and Hunting Perspective ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS…

12-point buck and a shiny new truck; a new Hoyt Bow, and a bass boat ready to tow. A house on a piece of land, and even a brandnew tree stand. You make the payments and I’ll use the goods, why are we still talking? I should get back in the woods. Just leave my presents under the tree, and before you even ask, yes, they are all for me. As an avid outdoorsman, I don’t think I have ever had much trouble coming up with a hefty Christmas list. If I let my wheels really get to turning, the list will be long enough to reach from my house straight up to the North Pole. Most of our loved ones can have us grinning ear to ear with a one-stop-shop at Bass Pro Shops or Cabela’s for Christmas, but there is so much more to this season than the gifts under the tree. Now don’t get me wrong, I love getting my hands on the latest and greatest in the outdoor industry as much as the next guy, but one thing will never change. The shine of new gear will wear off eventually, but the memories will never fade. When I think back on my most cherished memories in the outdoors, I think of unforgettable times with friends and family hunting and fishing. I wouldn’t trade the memories of fishing with my father after church on Sundays out of an old V-Hull for anything in the world. Sure, it wasn’t the fastest or shiniest rig on the water, but if that

old boat could talk, I would sit there for hours just to re-live some of the best times of my life. Outside of the fishing memories, my favorite memory of hunting isn’t even a special kill, but rather my dad showing me how to field dress my first deer. I have gone back to that memory on every harvest since then and it never fails to put a big grin on my face while I’m cleaning my deer. I am so blessed to have been able to grow up with God fearing parents that raised me and my brother in a way that opened our eyes to the Lord’s wonderful creations all around us. I’m keeping this article short and sweet as I reflect on the memories and people that made me the man I am today. So, I want to thank my brother for being the best friend I could have ever asked for and for always being there for me in the good times and the bad. I want to thank my mother for being the most kind-hearted woman I have ever met and for her never-ending love and support that she has given to me and my family. Finally, I want to thank my father for being the hardest working man that I will ever know, and for being willing to sacrifice anything for my family. I love you all! he holiday season is a time to be with family and friends. It’s time to reflect on the past year, be thankful for our blessings, and look forward to the prosperity the New Year could bring. For me, Christmas time is centered around family. It’s a time when we can actually spend more than just an hour or so together. During the week or two before Christmas, we usually take a couple trips together and enjoy the local Christmas tree lighting downtown, or perhaps an overnighter to see the lights at Callaway Gardens. And of course, just because it’s cold outside, doesn’t mean you

shouldn’t go fishing. In fact, in the southeast some of the best fishing occurs between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. Yes, it’s probably going to be cold, but if you bundle up a little bit you can really find yourself having some very fishy days on the water. By Thanksgiving, our flying fish-finders will begin to show up on regional lakes. Seagulls migrate up the rivers from the coast to get fat on bait fish being pushed to the surface by gamefish. And where you see the gulls whirling and diving, that’s the place to start fishing. As a matter of fact, the biggest striper I’ve ever caught was about three days after Thanksgiving. And yep, the gulls were feeding about 20 yards from the boat. Lock into a big striper or bass by using a fluke or spoon that matches the size of the bait in the vicinity. This could be a big 10-inch long jerk bait, or as small as a 2-inch fluke or spoon. And when stripers and bass zone in on super small threadfins, try using a crappie minnow under a small cork, and hold on! Over in the salt, the gator trout will be stacking up in the river mouths and in deep pockets. And because the shrimp have long since gone offshore, speckled trout will be quick to take an artificial bait that resembles a shrimp or a small pinfish. The reds will be schooling up on the mud flats and oyster bars. On sunny days, the sand and mud absorb the heat of the sun and makes the water a few degrees warmer on the flats. To hook up with a rowdy redfish, tie on fiddler crabs, mud minnows…or small shiny spoons and Project-X Saucertails. Now, cold water means crappie fishing too. The slab-sized crappie can be stacked up under boat docks, around brush piles and in deep water holes. I’ve never had fried crappie filets for Christmas dinner, but that might be a new menu this year. So, if you find yourself getting a little overwhelmed with all the hustle bustle of shopping and fighting for parking spaces at the mall this holiday season, take a break and spend a couple hours on the water. Fishing tends to wash all the stress away. And if you can convince the family to come along, I’d bet you’ll find yourself starting a new family holiday tradition too. WHEN THE SHAD DIE, JERK BAITS FLY

ne cold day I was on the lake and all I could think about was that I could not feel my toes. While waiting for the tournament to start as daylight was beginning to break, I felt the adrenaline that always rushes through my body when its blast-off time. The temperature outside was in the low 50s with a slight wind out of the west and cloudy with a water temperature of 48 degrees. When these types of conditions show up, I want to have some jerk baits in different sizes and colors on my front deck. Let’s take some time to discuss why winter is one of the best times to throw jerk baits and what conditions and the areas I’m looking to target. Why is winter one of the best times to throw jerk baits? When the water temperature drops in the cold weather months, I opt to start looking for the stretches of cold weather that have been around for quite a while, because I have found that bass tend to bite better when there has been a continued cold stretch. Some anglers wait until a warm up happens in the winter and soon find out that bass don’t hit the jerk bait as much. I have found that the colder it is, the better the bite. One reason I have noticed that bass eat the jerk bait is because of the shad kill due to severe cold fronts that drop the water temperature. The smaller fish tend to die first, which is an excellent time to have a jerk bait flying across the water. The best conditions to throw jerk baits in the winter tend to be when it’s cloudy with some wind blowing on the lake. My setup in the clear lakes here in Georgia is to use a six and a half-foot bait casting rod, 6:8:1 Lew’s speed spool reel on six to eight-pound P-Line Fluorocarbon when fishing deep, and a KVD Strike King jerk bait in different sizes. Knowing when to go fishing in the winter is essential but knowing what you are looking for is just as important. Starting out on more pronounced points is always the right choice. I prefer the steep ones and at times the flat ones. Another structure is steep bluff walls and banks. I’ve caught plenty of fish on deeper flats near channel breaks and swings, especially in areas where channels come close to the bank. The last elements to the keys to success are cloud cover and wind. These two ingredients will help you when you are fishing clear water. The wind helps you get bit when you can see down more than five feet. I also would not rule out looking for surface activity as bass do school in the winter to feed. Take the time to get out in the colder months and take some jerk baits with you. Know that one of the keys to success that I have found is that it needs to be cold and have some clouds and wind. If these exist at any time, pick up the jerk bait and work them. Don’t forget to target some of the starting points as it will allow you to connect with a fish quicker. Remember, when shad start to die, let the jerk baits fly. Good luck this winter. Travel Destinations GREAT FISHING AT CAJUN VISTA LODGE

’ve looked in my files and cannot find that I have written to you all about Cajun Vista Lodge in Barataria, Louisiana before. If I have, forgive me for repeating myself, but it’s so good, so agreeable, and such a great destination, I can’t resist. First, what comes to mind is the August 2019 tragic death of the founder and operator, and a great friend, Theophile Bourgeois, in a plane crash. We won’t go into all that right now, but rest assured for the angler who visits Cajun Vista Lodge, basically nothing has changed. The lodge is full every day, 10 months out of the year. I’ve already made my reservations for two, three-day back-to-back groups in October of 2020. Let’s start from the beginning. Barataria is about 25 miles southwest of New Orleans and is adjacent to the Atchafalaya Basin; 30 miles wide, 90 miles long, four feet deep, and full of millions of sea trout, redfish, black drum, sheepshead and other critters too many to mention. That’s

where you’ll be fishing. Once your fishing day begins, you will rarely see more than three boats per day, and they’ll probably be from Cajun Vista Lodge anyway. How about where you’ll be staying? Theophile bought, redesigned, and made very pleasant a more than 100 year old schoolhouse into a very accommodating lodge that will comfortably sleep 26-plus anglers, feed three luscious meals a day with much of it being unique Cajun spiced gumbo and sauces with fresh trout, redfish and shrimp, often caught that day. Once you park your car or truck, you will not have to move it for the duration of your stay. Everything is there; outstanding food, spacious lodging, modern 22 to 24-foot center console boats 50 yards from the dinner table, a staff of seasoned, safe and experienced fishing guides, whiney New Orleans music to put you in the fishing mood, and screened, mosquito free lounging areas to sit around and lie about the fishing you did that day. I take a twenty-five-person group there yearly and have done so for over 12 years. This year I’m taking two bunches of anglers. How about the fishing? The best months are June and October, but you can’t go wrong year-round, with the exception of January or February. What type of tackle do you need to take? Unless you have some special fishing tackle you want to carry down and use, you bring nothing. It’s all furnished and in good working order. When do you need to call for 2020? Now! It’s about $1,100 per person for three nights lodging and meals the evening you arrive, three meals for two days and an exit breakfast the day you leave, then two days of guided and very productive fishing.
