FISHING BIG WORMS FOR SUMMER BASS BRANDON LESTER
A
s far as baits go for summer fishing, you’ll see a wide variety of techniques come into play. Big crankbaits, jigs, swimbaits, spoons and all sorts of other baits will catch fish as the warm water temperatures of summer arrive. One bait I’ve always had a ton of confidence in this time of year is a big worm. It’s a very versatile bait that just gets bites in the summer months. Big plastic worms have been around a long time, and they’re often overlooked. You can use a big worm with a light bullet-shaped weight and swim it through grass in shallow water or put a heavier weight on and fish it 30 feet deep. It has a big profile that is just the right size for fish looking to make an easy meal after the spawn is done. That shallow grass bite is extremely fun and isn’t all that common these days. X Zone Lures has a new one out called the Blitz worm that’s 11 inches long and is the perfect size for big summertime bass. It has a ribbon-style tail that has great

action and is available in the best colors as well. I throw big worms on an MHX-NEPS90HF 7’6” heavy power rod and 17-lb. Vicious 100% fluorocarbon. That rod is perfect for maintaining the proper contact with the worm on a long cast and getting a good hook in the fish, especially big fish. A key part of my gear setup is the Mustad Big Bite worm hook. It’s a round-bend style and a 4/0 up to 6/0 is my go-to for big worm fishing. In recent years, we’ve been fishing big worms on a heavy shaky head, too. A ¼- to ½-ounce shaky head allows the worm to stand up a little straighter on the bottom. It is a great way to fish them. I always encourage people to try new baits and new techniques, but don’t pass up throwing a big worm this summer. It works – trust me.

ith state control of Gulf of Mexico red snapper seasons, recreational anglers are seeing more access to one of the most popular fisheries on the planet. However, keeping track of when and where you’re allowed to fish is now harder than ever. With 2019 state summer seasons already open and rocking along, here’s a quick run-down of the regulations so you can tell whether or not you’re allowed to make red snapper fishing a part of your summer vacation.
State Seasons Florida: June 11-July 12, with a possible fall season if there is available quota. Alabama: Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from June 1-July 28, plus Thursday, July 4. Mississippi: May 24-Sept. 2 (Labor Day), with a mid-season closure from July 8-28. Louisiana: Opened May 25 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until the state’s recreational quota of 743,000 pounds is met. Harvest is also allowed on the Monday of Memorial Day and the Thursday of the Fourth of July. Texas: Open year-round in state waters. State waters extend from the coastline out to the 9-mile mark for Texas and Florida’s Gulf coast. State waters in Mississippi, Alabama and Louisiana stretch out to three miles from the coast. The daily bag limit is two fish per person with a 16-inch minimum length, except in Texas, where there is a four fish per person daily limit with a 15-inch minimum length requirement. A state-specific license is needed for whichever state waters an angler plans to be in possession of red snapper. Each state is also collecting its own red snapper harvest data. Reporting requirements and self-reporting for each state can be conducted through the following apps. See the state websites for information on how to obtain these apps. Florida: iAngler Guld Red Snapper App Alabama: Snapper Check Mississippi: Tails n’ Scales Louisiana: Recreational Offshore Landing Permit App Texas: iSnapper App Federal Season Federally permitted for-hire vessels have 62 days to fish the Gulf of Mexico in federal waters. The federal season is June 1-Aug. 2.

KING AND SPANISH MACKEREL TOURNAMENT FISHING IN FRANKLIN CO. FLORIDA

f you’ve ever competed in a fishing tournament, then you understand how the thrill of the hunt fueled by a competitive drive can create levels of excitement, anticipation, joy and crushing defeat all in the same day… or the same hour, for that matter! When you bring hundreds of people together that share this passion to help find a cure for leukemia, you have what promises to be a great time!
Once you throw in the drag-screaming thrill of a big king mackerel, you’ve found yourself smack in the middle of the C-quarters Marina Kingfish Shootout in Carrabelle, Fla. Anyone capable of making it Carrabelle in August should participate. It’s a great tournament, and anyone has the potential to bring home the gold. In the world of competitive fishing, it’s anybody’s game on any given day. This event has a Spanish mackerel division, giving competitors more chances to win and more species to chase. Obviously, due to their smaller size, the Spanish mackerel won’t burn the bearing out of most reels like a king can, but on light tackle these fish put up as much fight, pound-forpound, as any of them! These toothy critters demand wire leaders and smooth drags. A 40-pound skyrocketing king will cut through mono effortlessly, and if your reel has a sticky drag, forget it; they strike with incredible speed! Live or dead bait will get them to strike, as will a variety of trolled plugs or duster rigs. When trolling, try to target different depths and vary your speed. Some days they want their targets moving fast, and on others, they want it slow or dead still. This is where one of my favorite ways to catch them comes into play. Anchor up or drift with several flat-lines out with an offering of live or dead baits such as cigar minnows, Spanish sardines or even pinfish. Enjoy a cold beverage and a snack, bask in the warm sun and take in the beauty of the Gulf of Mexico. When that peaceful moment is interrupted by the sound of a screaming drag and a bent rod, you’ll be hooked on king mackerel fishing just like me. These fish are incredible fighters, and big ones can peel off a hundred yards of line in mere seconds! C-quarters Marina will host the 16th Annual Kingfish Shootout Aug. 3-4 in Carrabelle, Fla. Inspired by the tragic loss of Lisa Crowder Jackson to leukemia, the volunteers who run this event have, to date, raised $1,000,125 for the Leukemia Research Foundation. s summer heats up, we turn our attention to the Independence Day holiday. The Fourth of July is one of my favorite holidays. Millions of families take to the road and the skies for destinations far and wide. Large numbers head to a ballpark and take in a baseball game. Countless other friends and family gather for cookouts in the backyard, at the beach, at the lake, down by the river, or in some other scenic place.

I have fond memories of celebrating the Fourth of July as a kid. Who doesn’t, right? After all, what is better than a hot summer day, hot dogs, hamburgers, barbecue, watermelon, and spending time with family and friends? Capping it off with a great firework show at the end of the day and being around the water! Some of my most memorable Independence Day holidays watching fireworks as a kid, and as an adult I should add, have been associated with the water; sitting on the levee of the Mississippi River, anchored on a boat in Biscayne Bay, or watching the spectacular show over New York Harbor with the Statue of Liberty as the backdrop. The Fourth of July is one holiday that unites us and brings us together, no matter the location. Whatever your holiday plan calls for this Independence Day, I hope it is a memorable one. LAKE OCONEE JULY FORECAST – UNPREDICTABLE!
A
s I look back at my logs over the last few years here on Lake Oconee, the word that comes to mind is unpredictable. This has been especially true for the last 18 months, with near record rains in 2018 and more recently record high temperatures in late May, early June. The last weekend in May I was out on The Spirit of Lake Oconee, a tour boat operated by Reynolds Plantation that has a high upper deck. I noticed a lot of topwater activity for almost the entire length of Richland Creek that started about 7:00 PM. This prompted me to go out late in the day on my next trip, at 7:00 PM it was still 96 degrees. It turned out to be one of my best hybrid / striper days in a long time. I started pulling u-rigs over humps and got a nice fish every pull. Then, I broke out the 7/8 War Eagle spoons and took a four to fivepound hybrid every drop. The key to this activity is definitely Georgia Power generating. Hybrids / Stripers – The umbrella rig bite has been very good. Look for humps near the dam that come up to 15 feet. I troll a Captain Mack’s 4 arm, 3-ounce, 9 jigs, about 100 feet behind the boat at three miles per hour. A tip I got from the venerable Doug Nelms a few years ago is to troll with 100-pound test. That way WHEN you get hung up (and you will!), just put the boat in reverse and pull the rig up. The spoon bite late in the day has been excellent. I often go over a hump a few times with the u-rig, then come back on the trolling motor and drop spoons. I cannot overstate the difference that moving water makes on this bite. Usually, Georgia Power pulls water late in the day and pumps back up starting at 2:00 AM. If you are lucky, they keep pumping for a while after first light. Crappie – The long line bite has been very strong. Most of the guides here are doing crappie trips early in the morning, trolling out of the back of the boat over submerged timber. The trick to this is finding timber that is holding fish. I would look for the submerged timber in Richland Creek and the mouth of Lick Creek. Troll at .09 MPH with six-pound test. Here most like double jigs on a single line. The first being 1/16 and the end jig being 1/32. You will get hung sometimes, but this is a very effective way to catch crappie this time of year. Fly fishing – The morning pump-back bite has not (as of the time of this writing) been very strong for the fly fisherman. However, if you go out in Richland Creek or to the humps near the dam, late in the day when water is moving you can hook up! Use an eight-weight rod, sink tip, and a Clouser Minnow with some pink in it and hang on! Final words – I offer combination trips, so you can fly fish and use spinning rods for light tackle fun! Resources have stocked lots of hybrids and stripers. We are catching some eight to 10-pound stripers and lots of three to five-pound hybrids. However, there are still some big fish in the lake. A friend of mine caught a 30 pounder last week. If I get on a school of small fish, I will move and look for bigger fish. Hybrids only live four to six years, so the three to five-pound hybrids are growing fast. In July, the hybrids and stripers go deeper, so I look in at least 30 to 40 feet of water depth. A good sonar unit is a big part of fishing in the summer. I hunt until I find the school, then I send a lively herring down on a Carolina rig. A swim bait on a one-ounce jig head reeled through the congregating fish works well. A big teardrop spoon will also work. Bass fishing will get better as the number of bass boats on the lake thins out. The bass get a lot of pressure in the spring with the bass close to the bank. As the water warms, the bass move off the bank to deeper cover. Their cover is usually brush piles, placed by anglers, 15 to 30 feet deep around points and humps. Most good locations already have brush piles and they are yours to fish if you can locate them with your sonar. This time of year, we catch mostly spots as the spotted bass take over. They are more aggressive than the largemouth and are also easier to catch. Spotted bass are prolific at spawning and they out-compete the largemouth. The point is they are here to stay and fun to catch. A two-pound spot will fight harder than a six-pound largemouth. A spotted bass tastes like a crappie without the fishy taste of a largemouth. As the water gets warmer in the middle of summer, they will group up like stripers. If you find them, you can catch a bunch.

ichard B. Russell Lake is situated on the Savannah River on the Georgia and South Carolina border sandwiched between the two well known fisheries, Lake Hartwell and Clarks Hill (Thurmond) Lake. Russell is the newest reservoir in the chain of lakes along the Savannah River, and therefore was constructed differently. First, the lake is almost entirely flooded timber. Secondly, the lake level never fluctuates more than five feet, due in part to the ability to pump water back into the lake from downstream. Thirdly, the Army Corps of Engineers maintains a buffer zone around the shoreline and prohibits development. The result is a beautiful, unspoiled lake. More than once on my boat I have heard the comment, “This lake reminds me of Canada.” Lake Russell has a mix of spotted bass and largemouth bass with the spots being the majority. We catch bass year-round. In the summer, I would recommend fishing main lake points with a drop shot of shaky head type worms. Fish in 15-25 feet of water. If you can find a brush pile in that depth of water that can be an added attraction. Also, have a small top water lure at the ready for impromptu schooling activity. The stripers will be on the main channel as well early in the summer. They will be most active early in the morning and can be caught on herring. In the lower end of the lake fish your bait on a down rod 20-50 feet deep. In the upper reaches of the river, you may fish closer to the surface because the fish will be influenced by the current coming out of the dams upstream. Please be aware that the limits on stripers in Lake Russell differ greatly from other area lakes. The possession limit is two stripers per person. Only one fish over 34 inches may be kept. This is not the lake to visit if your intent is to “keep a cooler full of stripers.” Crappie can be caught all summer by fishing at night with minnows, during the day early in the morning, or late in the evening on deep brush piles. uly can be good fishing but sometimes inconsistent for filling coolers with 1-10-pound blue and channel catfish. Although fish can be caught in the heat of the day, the best times are early morning and late evening, as well as throughout the night for folks that don’t want to be in the heat at all. The higher the sun is the deeper the fish will hold depending on how deep the thermocline is. During low light hours the fish will be in the shallower areas (5-15 feet) around humps and points feeding on the baitfish that hang on the ledges. Anchoring the boat in a position where you can fan-cast baits at all sections of the hump or point will allow you to position baits from as shallow as a few feet down to more than 30 feet. This will allow you to find the depth zone where the fish are actively feeding at the time. Cut herring, shrimp and stinkbait are all good for bringing 1-10-pound fish into the boat. Fishing the same areas at night with live bream, white perch, and big chunks of gizzard shad will increase your chances of landing some 30-plus pound blues and flatheads.
ass fishing is fair. Several patterns and techniques are working. The bass are scattered all over the lake. There is still a good shallow bite going on in the pockets in three to six feet of water in both the Little River and the Oconee River. The Strike King 6xd crank bait in a sexy shad color and a Carolina rigged Zoom trick worm will catch fish on the offshore points and humps. These fish will be in 15 to 18 feet of water on these offshore structures. Chartreuse colored buzz baits and spinner baits will catch fish around wood cover and sea walls for the first hour of the morning. For the remainder of the morning, throw a square bill crank bait around lay down trees and docks near the mouth of spawning pockets. Midday when the bite slows down, it is time to move out deep or skip plastics under shady docks. A Weedless Wonder lead head and a green pumpkin Zoom trick worm will work fishing around and under the docks.

Hopefully, with more consistent weather and water temperatures, the bite will pick up. Look for these fish to feed early in the mornings. Try trolling over long points near the main river channel in 30- to 40-feet of water. We normally set our baits in the 20-to 25-foot depths. We have tried deeper over the years with not much success. Look for these fish to start feeding midafternoon as we head towards August. Bass - The bass bite has been consistent lately with most of the fish holding on a 25-to 35-foot bottom in and around brush. Drop-shot seems to be the best technique. Try locating this fish on a fish finder. Lock the trolling motor down on the boat and fish directly over them. We have caught some really nice spotted bass and largemouth using this technique the last few days. We should see a mid-morning mid-afternoon topwater bite in the next few weeks. The lake seems to have plenty of herring this year. These fish are moving up and down the lake chasing the bait fish. Look for these fish to continue to feed on this pattern over the next few weeks. Yellow Perch - July is the month to catch a mess of yellow perch. These fish are staging in the grass midway back in the creeks. Finding them sometimes can be a little tough. Fishing in and near the grass seems to be the ticket. We have been catching most of our perch on an 18-to 25-foot bottom using small crappie jigs. ummer fishing on the rivers around us here at Chattooga River Fly Shop are great. Whether fishing for trout, redeye bass or pan fish, you can have an enjoyable day catching plenty of fish. River conditions are wonderful, as we have received plenty of rain over the past month. We have had average June summer temperature conditions, which have kept the river temperatures down a bit. We have been wet wading now for over a month, which has made for enjoyable days on the rivers. Trout - Early mornings until noon have been good along with late afternoons until dark, as daytime temperatures fall off late in the day. We have had tremendous days with dry flies, streamers, nymphs, and terrestrials. During sunny days, target the over-hanging foliage of the riverbanks and the shaded areas of the rivers. Also look for deeper runs, as the fish will seek thermal refuge during the day. Redeye bass and pan fish - Top water and streamers work great! Fishing the back eddies and slower moving water has been the key to success. Fishing mid-morning and throughout the day has been better than very early morning or late evening. School is out, water temperatures are great, and there are plenty of fish to be caught. We participated as volunteers with the Kid’s Fishing Rodeo at Burrell’s Ford Campground this past month with the U.S. Forestry Department. Introducing kids to the great outdoors and nature is a wonderful time and catching a few fish will add to the experience for all. Remember to bring your camera along for your trip and share your photos, you might see your photo in the next edition on the “Brag Board”. We are all guests in the forest, so remember to “leave no trace” and pack out what you bring in. Keeping forests clean will add to the enjoyable experience for all. Local Rivers & Fly Fishing UPPER SAVANNAH RIVER

ater Temperature: 63 degrees Water Clarity: 50% Stained Current speed: 1.34 mph Lure Selection: Super Spin, Team Daiwa Minnow Gold and Black This was a special trip that I took with my brother in-law, David, who was in town for the Memorial Day holiday. The back story is that he is an avid fly fisherman, so I told him to bring his tackle and we would go search for some smallmouth in the upper, North Augusta part of the rapids and then hunt for the freak-sized shellcrackers (red ear sunfish) that we have in the upper Savannah River. Our trip started at around seven in the morning near the rapids where I saw a few bass busting the surface. I tied on a TD Minnow jerkbait in gold and black to bounce around in the rocks while David was fly fishing. After about four casts I had my first fish, a small redeye bass. When I got it to the boat, I realized there was a school of them fighting for my jerk bait. We fished this upper area for about an hour, catching many small redeye and smallmouth bass, mostly on the jerkbait, and a couple on an orange and black Clouser fly that David tied. We motored up and headed downriver to try and find some bream and shellcracker beds. After we passed Sand Bar Ferry Bridge, I put the boat down on the Georgia side of the river and began to fish the bank with the Super Spin. The Super Spin is a lure exclusive to Number One Tackle. It is a beetle spin on steroids with a slider grub on it. As I began casting, I quickly noticed that the fish were on this bank, but not everywhere. They were taking cover in the shade of the overhanging trees along the riverbank. Almost every tree had a bream bed underneath it. It was one fish after another for a solid mile of riverbank! We caught redbreast, warmouth, bluegill, and shellcracker, probably around forty all together. There was one fish however that stood out; a beautiful thirteen-inch shellcracker, which is my personal best and the third biggest I have ever seen alive. I pitched under a tree and counted my Super Spin down to around four feet using a retrieve speed just fast enough to make the blade spin, when about halfway back to the boat I feel a hit and set the hook. With the river clarity here being clear, I was able to see the fish at about six feet deep. “It’s a jack fish,” I said. It had to be the way my ultralight was bent, and the drag was screaming off my reel. Then I got a better look at the fish. David and I exchanged glances. “Get the net. It’s a FREAK!” I said. Unfortunately, we had forgotten the net this trip. At this moment, I knew the landing of this fish would be a team effort. David hurried into the bottom of the boat. With the skillet sized fish nearing the surface, “Get him please!” I yelled. David successfully grabbed the river monster and laid it on the boat seat. We both looked at the fish with amazement. With the fish in the boat, I thanked David for the assist, and we quickly took pictures so we could return it to the water. As she swam off, it was a great end to our fishing trip. GEORGIA BASS NATION STATE CLASSIC
he Georgia BASS Nation High School Fishing State Classic was held 07-08 June at Clarks Hill Lake in Columbia County, Georgia. For participants, coaches, parents, sponsors, and spectators the tournament certainly did not disappoint. The excitement could be felt early at the pre-tournament meeting at the Columbia County Exhibition Center on 06 June and the positive energy continued right through the final weighins on 08 June, even under the threat of approaching thunderstorms.

To kick off the event on 06 June, the Tournament Director, Wes Meadows, presented Greenbrier High School with its second consecutive conservation award. He also covered key tournament rules for participants and shared important suggestions for keeping live wells cool and reducing fish-mortality. Meadows acknowledged the many contributors that made the tournament happen. He specifically emphasized the outstanding support of Shelly Blackburn, Executive Director of the Columbia County Convention and Visitors Bureau, for having “rolled out the red carpet”; boat captains for their countless hours of dedicated support to anglers throughout the year in what Meadows characterized as the “hardest job of all”; and he thanked Greenbrier High School for serving as high school host for the tournament. “Beyond phenomenal” was how he characterized this year’s tournament support. Angler of the Year Angler of the Year Winners - Lee Rose awards were presented on 06 Koza and Carter Koza June which helped add to the 10 GREATER AUGUSTA & CSRA

pre-tournament excitement. Lee Rose Koza and Carter Koza representing Mount Paran Christian School in Kennesaw, Georgia took top honors for the 2018/2019 season with an impressive 1503 total points for the year. Angler of the Year is stiff competition and it forces consistency throughout the entire fishing season. Clay Dyer, professional angler since 1998, inspirational speaker (claydyer.com), and longtime friend of Meadows was the keynote speaker. Dyer captivated the audience with his motivational talk. He imparted several important lessons on participants and shared many of his defining experiences as a professional angler and as a young person. Dyer’s lessons for success were more than just great advice for succeeding as an angler and in sports. His guidance centered on how to succeed in life. Dyer started fishing at the age of four on a pond at his grandfather’s farm and at age 10 decided he wanted to be a professional angler. From an early age he learned to do what is right and not what is easy, and Dyer said it has served him well in life. Dyer told the audience that he did not let a circumstance define who he is. “Quitters never win, and winners never quit” he said. Dyer left the audience with some final advice to which he credits his happiness and success in life; faith in God, never giving up, and having the attitude of a champion.
The Tournament
Wildwood Park with its high capacity boat ramps was well suited for the two-day championship tournament. 102 high school teams and 25 junior teams registered for the Georgia State Classic. Harris County, Georgia fielded seven high school and junior teams, the most of any fishing team. To help reduce fish mortality due to the possibility of high afternoon temperatures, anglers were limited to four fish each day. Tournament fishing began 07 June with the threat of rain and the possibility of scattered thunderstorms. Fortunately, on day one the weather remained fair. And, at the end of the day, Greenbrier High School’s Cy Casey and Tanner Hadden took a commanding lead with 16.88 pounds. With such a strong start, Coach Bobby Gilbert of Clarks Hill Youth

Fishing knew the point leaders would be tough to catch. In preparation for day two he told his team “we are going to go big or go home,” so they employed buzzbaits looking for the big fish. “You don’t get as many bites [with buzzbaits], but when you do, it’s a big one” he said. Greenbrier High School Fishing Coach DJ Hadden encouraged his team at the start of day two, and they too went for the big fish. As it would turn out, the big fish came early on day one and late in the day on day two, which only added to the intensity of competition. At weigh-in on day two, Greenbrier teammates Josh Ortt and Henry Garrett shot to the top spot on the leader board with an impressive 16.70 pounds. Ortt and Garrett caught their big fish with a ten-inch worm according to Ortt. Paul Casey, Ortt’s and Garrett’s boat captain and the father of fellow competitor Cy Casey, commented that the day was “so exciting. I knew it would be close when they [Ortt and Garrett] pulled in 16.70 pounds” on the second day. Exciting was an understatement. As teams continued to weigh-in throughout the afternoon of day two under the threat of approaching thunderstorms, it became apparent that Ortt and Garrett were going to be tough to beat with their two-day total of 25.46 pounds. And, as the afternoon wore on, the suspense continued to build as their lead continued to hold and there were fewer and fewer teams left to weigh in. However, spectators waiting anxiously at the weigh-in station knew anything was possible, and everyone was waiting to see what day one leaders, Cy Casey and Tanner Hadden, would bring in for their day two catch. Weighing in on day two with four live fish and 10.66 pounds, Casey and Hadden shot back to the top of the leader board, where they remained, with a total of 27.54 pounds for the two-day Georgia State Classic. Asked about their game plan on day two, Tanner Hadden said they fished deeper, because shallow wasn’t working. Changing things up can be a gamechanger. Persistence can also pay off big, as it often does, and it did for Casey and Hadden. After the morning did not produce much, Casey said they ran back down the lake late in the afternoon and caught their big fish around 2PM, shortly before they needed to head back for weigh-in. Asked about the tournament results, Coach DJ Hadden said he was very proud of his team. “There is a lot of pressure on the home lake” he added, and the Greenbrier High School Fishing Team delivered. In the Junior Division, Brody Kellum and Carson Thompson of Franklin County Junior Bass won with 19.86 pounds for their two-day total.

Final Thoughts
By all accounts, the 2019 Georgia BASS Nation High School State Classic was a great tournament. Professionally executed by everyone involved, it had all the excitement and suspense you could hope for in a championship tournament. Additionally, Wes Meadows commented that this year’s tournament was particularly meaningful as many of the seniors have been competing with Georgia BASS Nation for the last seven years and as a result, “quite a few kids are close and spend time together outside of fishing.” For Meadows, seeing senior Lee Rose Koza win Angler of the Year and senior Cy Casey win the State Classic was especially meaningful. “These are great kids,” he said with emotion as he reflected on the tournament and the season. “Cy Casey is a super kid and he is going to go great places in life,” Meadows added as a final thought. The top three high school teams and top junior team, in both Angler of the Year and the State Classic, qualify to compete at nationals. Regarding this year’s Georgia team headed for nationals, Meadows said with confidence, “We have some kids that are really talented anglers on our team, and I am excited to see how they do.” No doubt, the Georgia team will be a force to reckon with at nationals, especially with anglers the likes of Lee Rose Koza and Cy Casey. High School Fishing BORDER BASS TOURNAMENT RESULTS
O
n 18 May, 22 middle and high school students competed in the Second Annual Georgia-South Carolina Border Bass Tournament held at the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) recreation facility on Clarks Hill Lake. The day of fishing was capped off with the presentation of awards and a fantastic beach cookout which everyone thoroughly enjoyed. ALX rods, Revo reels, and tackle packs were provided as awards. North Augusta Coach Sean Hall acknowledged the great support provided by the IBEW and Mr. O’Neill Johnson as well as parents and boat captains. The day was hot under partly cloudy skies with the temperature hovering around 90 degrees and the wind calm. Most of the fish were caught early in the day, and a few big ones were lost as well according to Coach Hall and angler Baden Culpepper. Bragging rights for biggest fish caught during the one-day tournament went to Bryson Wilson with a 3.5-pound bass. Gavin Gilbert of the Clarks Hill Youth Fishing Team took first place in the high school division with 8.68 pounds. He landed his first keeper at 9AM and attributed his success that day to
utilizing flukes and jigs around main lake points. Will Ravenscroft of the North Augusta Fishing Team took home first place in the middle school division with 10.66 pounds and attributed his success to fishing the edges of the points, as well as trial and error. When asked what advice they would give other anglers trying to win a tournament, Ravenscroft said success is all about “time on the water,” and Gilbert answered with “Stick to your strengths.” Good advice from two young anglers who Coach Hall said have “what it takes” to be successful. — TAM Staff

Once you have your cooking surface prepared, it’s time to start cooking fish over a campfire! Set the cast iron skillet over the hot fire and add about one inch of vegetable oil. Let the oil heat up in the pan for about one minute before adding any fish.

You can also make up a tinfoil packet filled with your favorite side dish to cook while you’re frying the fish. Once your oil is hot, simply grab a few filets from your bag filled with seasoning and add the filets to the hot oil. It’s important to make sure you keep a hot fire, but not too hot, or it will burn the grease. It really just takes a little practice, but once you get the hang of it, it’s easy. By having a lot of small branches or kindling nearby, you can quickly create a hot fire and heat up the oil if it gets too cold. Fry the fish filets for about three minutes on each side or until they are golden brown. Once done, use a pair of tongs and set the filets on a plate covered with a paper towel to soak up any leftover grease.

Fishing and Hunting Perspective PAYING IT FORWARD
T
he summer heat is cranking up and the college fishing season is winding down. I just recently returned from the FLW Yeti College Fishing National Championship on the Potomac River. I always enjoy my time on the road traveling with friends and fishing new places, but certain tournaments like this one stand out above the rest. There have been a variety of reasons why individual trips stand out, but this one stood out in particular based on the kindness and generosity of a Potomac River local. The evening before the tournament, my team and I were approached by a man who was not fishing in the tournament but was heading to the pre-tournament meeting. At the time, I didn’t think much of the encounter other than someone being kind enough to approach a group of college anglers and ask how our experience on the river had been
thus far. The gentleman’s name was Steven Wiseman and he happened to be the guest speaker at that night’s meeting. Day one of the tournament rolled around and by mid-morning my partner and I had a camera boat taking pictures of us as we were fishing an isolated patch of lily pads. As it turned out, the driver of the camera boat was Steve from the day before. To make a long story short, Steve happened to be our neighbor a few homes down from the house where we were staying at the river. He welcomed us into his home for a wonderful dinner and proceeded to give us a plethora of baits that he enjoyed using for us to try out when we got back home. Steve is a great example of what it means to pass along a love for fishing to the next generation. With so many distractions in today’s world, it’s important that we stay true to our roots and enjoy the simple things in life. To add to that, we all need to make a consistent effort to pass along the blessings we have of enjoying the outdoors to those around us. Kindness makes a tremendous difference in society and Steve made sure that he showed us just that. Thank you, Steve, for paying forward to us, and the many others that will follow, the kindness you have received in your own life. Your kindness will be passed along! his beautiful 447-acre park is located on the western shore of 71,100 acre Clarks Hill Lake, one of the largest lakes in the Southeast known for its excellent fishing and recreational opportunities. With its four boat ramps and accessible fishing pier, Elijah Clark State Park is especially popular with anglers and boaters. A sandy swimming beach welcomes visitors to cool off during Georgia summers. Rental cottages are located on the lake’s edge, and the spacious campground is nestled into the forest. A log cabin replica of the Clark home displays furniture, utensils and tools circa 1780 and is open weekends April through November. I
’m frequently asked, “Where’s a good place to go fishing on my next vacation?” That’s a hard question to answer because there are so many great options. I usually answer their question with a question, “Do you want this to be a fishing trip, or do you want to do a little fishing while you’re on vacation?” A fishing trip vacation means you want to fish every day and don’t place a lot of emphasis on an abundance of non-fishing activities; golf, entertainment, nightlife, etc. If you want to have a nice vacation and do a little fishing while you’re there, then you might prefer a destination that has lots of other amenities to occupy your time off the water. This isn’t to say you can’t fish 100% of the time at an amenity-rich destination, or you can’t find something else to do at a less populated locale, but you get the message. Here are a few options you might want to check out that are a little off the beaten path but have enough in the way of amenities to keep the entire family happy. Carrabelle, Florida - This quaint fishing village is just a few miles east of Apalachicola. There’s great bay fishing for trout and redfish. Huge schools of Spanish mackerel run the beach along Dog Island. The offshore Air Force towers are close enough to reach in a relatively small boat and offer awesome trolling and bottom fishing for kings, cobia, grouper, snapper and more. Moorings Marina has slip space and everything you need, including accommodations. Hernando Beach, Florida - Another small community on the Gulf Coast, north of Tampa. Miles and miles of pristine flats, dotted with mangrove islands, make homes for tarpon, snook, redfish, spadefish, speckled trout, mangrove snapper, and on and on. This is truly a well-kept secret. You can fish this area with a small boat, but just be sure you have a chartplotter on your boat to show the channels and safe water. WeekiWachee, home of the mermaid show, is just a few minutes away, and there are plenty of great places to stay and eat in the area. St. Marys, Georgia - If you want to test your skills with a high-flying spinner shark or a 100+ pound tarpon, set your sights on St. Marys, the southern-most city on the Georgia coast. This area is as rich in history as it is in fishing. St. Marys is the gateway to Cumberland Island, with ferry departures every day. The town has several great restaurants, including Lang’s Marina Restaurant. If you don’t own a boat, the folks at the marina can arrange a charter guide to fish the backwaters around Cumberland Island or make the quick run offshore to wrestle with king mackerel, tarpon and spinner sharks. These are just a few awesome vacation destinations away from all the crowds, congestion and high prices. Because they’re a little less traveled, you’ll find the fishing pressure is much lighter. Fishing Trips THE GOOD OLD DEPENDABLE REDFISH
A
re you a bass guy? Bet you are. I am too. Ever caught a 51-pounder, or for that matter, many or any over 10 pounds? Very few folks have although many think they have, but that’s another subject for another column I have in mind. Permit me to circle around a single ‘finny’ critter, the magnificent redfish, and point you to places where you can get it done and with whom. First let’s talk about the fish and what to expect. The world record is 94 pounds, caught many years ago. OK, enough about that. You’re not going to catch a new world record, just a few for the adventure and for the grill. The guy is dumb as a rock, he can be spooked and will still bite, is always hungry, is a survivor, grows rapidly, eats plastics, spinnerbaits, crankbaits, can be spotted in the shallows, and is a target for casts and finally, is a fabulous table fish. My largest is 51-pounds. I was fishing in the Banana River near Cocoa Beach and saw this giant at the head of a school

in about two-feet of water, casted a small curly tail jig on 12-pound test line and he took it. After the hook set, the fish swam past the boat and my fabulous guide, Shawn Foster, also known as Doctor Drum (Cocoa Beach, Florida; 321-7840094), shouted, “That’s a 50-pounder.” It weighed 51 pounds. Let me direct you to a couple of target destinations and the people who will act as your hosts. Fall! Oh, my goodness. 500 to 700 pounds a day? Yep. Georgia coast. Surprised? I was, but not now. Telephone Mark Noble, long time guide, local booster of fishing, St Simons Island native. He’s the man and has spent his life fishing these waters and knows exactly when, where and how. You can come along. From September through November in the shallow waters near the river mouths that flow into the bay, the redfish gang up like I’ve never seen before and although you’re going to beef up your tackle a bit because the fish are so large, it’s still sporting. The minimum length to keep a red there is 27 inches. I’ve fished with Mark over a dozen times, caught probably over 6,000 pounds of reds and never had one to keep. I didn’t mind. Maybe you should look up Mark at www.georgiafishing.net. It was some years ago that one of my sponsors staged what we called the ‘Fishing Trip of a Lifetime’ and a father and son from South Alabama won the trip. Sure enough, using three rods, one for me and the each of them, we often caught three reds at a time with an average of 35 pounds. Think about that for a moment, over 100 pounds of beautiful Georgia Coast reds at once. The photos of that trip are long since gone but here are more current ones to demonstrate the productivity you can expect when visiting Mark Noble. Winter! After reading this, I’ll be expecting you to head to Pensacola Bay and Navarre Beach in December. Eddie Woodall is his name and schooling redfish is part of his game. I’m not sure exactly what happens but it’s something like this; when the river waters cool in December, it sends tons upon tons of bait down current into the bay. When this happens every year, hundreds of schools of redfish, with thousands in each school, push the porgies to the surface. Low and behold, when the surface feeding birds give you the signal of activity, you’ll motor over and begin casting and reeling large Road Runners tipped with plastics. Virtually every cast under the birds gets a hookup. When visiting Eddie, the first time a couple of Decembers ago, he hyped it up, but in his soft voice so as not to get me too expectant. The birds indicated the first school and I hooked and caught a 20-pound redfish on the first cast. After that stunning start, we caught and released at least 20 similar reds before lunch time. Yamaha Goes Big With Their New 19-foot Center Console When Yamaha Boats entered the center console category in 2015 with their first gen 19-foot 190 FSH, skeptics questioned if Yamaha could compete in the segment in the same way the “Rev Your Heart” brand dominates the 19-foot, 21-foot, and 24-foot bowrider category. Just three years later, Yamaha clapped back by winning Boating Magazine’s coveted Boat of the Year honor with their 21-foot 210 FSH. For 2019, Yamaha upped the ante with a complete refresh of the 190 FSH Series. Yamaha’s 19’ center console boats return with an all-new deck and hull design that is 3 inches longer and 2 inches wider than previous year models. With the added space, Yamaha engineers increased storage capacity and improved overall functionality. From bow to stern, there is not another 19’ center console boat as spacious or more comfortable. Under the waterline, the longer, wider hull is designed for added comfort too, favoring characteristics that reduce bow rise when accelerating and hull packing when operating in choppy water conditions. Another significant improvement included on all Yamaha boats for 2019 is a new V-shaped reverse bucket that enhances handling when in reverse, a redesigned Articulating Keel that reduces drag, and a new compliment of corrosion resistance measures to protect the jet pump and surrounding driveline parts. The new V-Bucket works by diverting water thrust laterally (not down) to take advantage of the benefits of side thrust. The redesigned Articulating Keel is thinner and with tighter tolerances to reduce drag while maintaining all its low-speed handling benefits. And to increase corrosion resistance to the jet pump and surrounding driveline parts, a three-step process that combines Alumite, a ceramic coating, and expoxy paint has been added. Most Usable Deck Layout Ever in a 19’ Center Console Starting at the bow, the storage compartments are larger and open wider than
before. To help keep tackle and other essentials organized, Plano storage trays are integrated into the new portside mini-pod storage compartment, and on the starboard side, the mini pod opens into a huge storage area. These padded mini pods also serve as convenient ingress and egress points. The bow platform is wider than previous models, and the bow platform hatch is wider too, providing better access and more light for stowing or retrieving gear. The bench seat and front of the center console lifts up to reveal an extra deep, large storage area that can also serve as a changing room or head compartment, thanks to the curtain enclosure included on Deluxe and Sport models. The entryway to this compartment is redesigned to make ingress and egress easier. This compartment can also store equipment and recreational items and offers convenient access to the backside of the helm for easy service and installation of aftermarket marine electronics. On the sides of the center console are six vertical rod holders, three on each side. Four additional rod holders are located under the gunnels on the port and starboard sides. With the addition of four flush-mount rod holders on the deck, there are 14 rod holders across the boat. The Sport version adds four more rocket launchers on the T-top. The helm is thoughtfully designed with a simple-to-remove windshield for low profile storage, a stainless steel sports steering wheel, easy access to all boat control switches, a locking glove box and an open area to flush mount electronics such as a fishfinder, GPS unit, and other marine electronics. Also included is Yamaha’s 4.3” touchscreen Connext control system featuring a brand-new user interface in 2019, and conveniently-placed rocker switches for Yamaha’s No Wake Mode and Cruise Assist, along with bilge, horn and other vital functions.

resentation holds the key to catching fish. That cardinal rule proves just as valid for critters that hunker down on the sea floor as it does for more glamorous denizens in the upper level of the water column. If a bait isn’t in the zone where the fish happen to be or if it doesn’t behave in a natural and realistic manner, it will be ignored. Sinkers are a vital aspect of fishing success. Their mission goes well beyond the task of simply dragging a bait to the bottom or some midpoint in the water column. View them as part of the total presentation package. That includes such factors as sink rate, whether it anchors a bait or allows it to drift, and as an aid in casting. If you’re going to troll, sinkers help to adjust the depth at which each bait or lure is moving through the water. With very few exceptions, select the lightest sinker that will carry your offering to the bottom or the desired depth. Don’t assume that if 1 ounce does the job, 2 ounces are better. Not only do heavier weights keep the bait or lure from looking like a tempting morsel, they make the hook-up process more difficult. Remember that when an unsuspecting fish inhales an offering, it must drag the sinker along before the hook will embed in its jaw. Line diameter plays a major role in determining the weight of the sinker you will need. Generally, the finer the diameter of the line you are using, the less weight you need to achieve the same results in a given situation. As an example, the bottom bouncer who insists on using 30-pound test line needs a heavier sinker than someone using 20-pound test. Sinker shape helps to determine sink rate. The fastest, freefalling sinkers have the weight concentrated at the bottom, tend to be very compact and are streamlined. It’s important to note, however, that fast-falling sinkers have a tendency to cause the
hook and tag end of the leader to wrap around the standing part during the drop. In most situations, it proves more effective if the sinker will drift across the bottom rather than anchor the rig in one place. If you’re trolling, sinker choice should include enough weight to keep the bait or lure at the preferred depth. No assortment of sinkers is complete without split shots, bullet weights, pinch-ons, and twist-ons. These can be added very easily to make minor adjustments to the weight of the primary sinker. Sinkers come in many different shapes, and each shape has a specific purpose. It’s important to choose a shape designed to do the job you expect. The right sinker for the task at hand will increase your catch rate significantly, and that’s the easiest way to turn an average day on the water into a memorable one.

Reduce Mortality Of Released Bycatch
s responsible anglers, we want to do everything we can to return bycatch safely. Anyone who’s fished bottoms deeper than 30 feet has probably experienced the “floating fish syndrome.” This is caused by barotrauma, an expansion of the fish’s air bladder as they are brought up from depth. Signs of barotrauma include eyes popping, stomach extending out of the mouth, intestines extending out of the anus and bloating. These fish will not be able to descend upon release and are subject to predation. Thanks to a NOAA grant, the South Carolina Wildlife Federation has partnered with the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council to develop an interactive online tutorial detailing fish-handling and release techniques
that give fish the best chance of survival. In 2018, anglers fishing waters of the Atlantic from North Carolina to Florida released more than 2 million red snapper. Even a 5 percent increase in survivorship would save 100,000 red snapper a year. All those surviving fish would remain in the stock. The South Atlantic Fisheries Management Council includes bycatch mortality as part of their population estimates that determine seasons and catch limits. Best fishing practices detailed in the tutorial are a great way of reducing mortality, which means there will be more fish in the water for future fishing opportunities. MONSTER BROWN CAUGHT ON WHITE RIVER

ou don’t see a brown trout like this one every day. This massive and battle-scarred bruiser was caught and released by Paden Flippen on Arkansas’ White River below Bull Shoals Dam on June 14. The 36.7-pound monster was a fitting present for the angler, who celebrated his 24th birthday that day. The White River is well known for producing gigantic trout. This system of hatchery-supported tailwaters has the food sources and habitat for rainbow, brown, brook and even cutthroat trout to reach almost unbelievable sizes. Flippin guides for Cotter Trout Dock and said he and other guides had been tracking this big brown for more than a year. If he had decided to keep it for certification, Flippen’s big trout would have fallen just shy of the state record, which is held by a 40-pound, 4-ounce beast that was caught from the Little Red River back in 1992. That fish, caught by Rip Collins, was the world record up until 2013, when an angler in New Zealand caught a 42-pound, 1-ounce brown trout.

few inches until it can deliver the fly ever so softly. Always carry extra spools of leader material to meet this problem. Once again, your leader length is often determined by the fishing conditions. If the wind is howling and you are having a difficult time rolling over your fly, shorten the leader. If conditions are glass-slick, the fish will be spooky. You will need a much longer cast, so lengthen your leader and reduce the size and weight of your fly.
THE BASIC SALTWATER LEADER: THE LONG AND SHORT OF IT The leader is the connection between fisherman and fish. If tied incorrectly, not only will it be difficult to cast, it will also be responsible for losing saltwater gamefish. I prefer a 9-foot leader when fishing saltwater, although there are occasions when a 10-foot leader is needed. A good leader can turn over the large, heavy flies used in saltwater fly fishing. I will often start my day with a longer leader, and reduce its length depending on the demands of weather conditions and efficiency in properly delivering the fly. The leader is a simple equation: 4x3x2. I have found this the preferred method to construct a solid saltwater leader: • 4 feet of 40-pound stiff mono; • 3 feet of 30-pound mono, and • 2 feet of 20-pound mono. This system works well with lighter tippets as well. If I need to add a lighter tippet, I shorten the heavy 40-pound butt section to keep the overall leader length 9 feet, adding the light tippet to the 20-pound test on the fly end of the leader. How the fly lands on the water is important. You want the fly to land as softly as a whisper. If, however, your leader is too long, a heavy fly will hit the water as loudly as a thrown rock. The noise will alert every fish in the vicinity. I usually solve this problem by shortening the leader and cutting off a
There are times when a shorter leader is needed. The short leader makes it easier to cast a heavy fly into the wind. I will often shorten leaders to fewer than 7 feet when dealing with very strong winds. It’s good to remember that shallow-water fish are less spooky under windy conditions. Therefore, they will often swim within close range of the angler without being spooked. I believe the wind and the distortion it creates on the water’s surface acts as a barrier to the world above the surface, making the fish feel more secure. I’ve witnessed this on many occasions when tarpon, redfish and permit swim within a rod’s length of me while the wind was blowing 20 knots.
