ENGAGE: Women’s Empowerment and Active Citizenship is a 6.5-year initiative co-designed by Coady Institute and five partner organizations in India, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Bangladesh, and Haiti. Together, these partners carried out a collaborative research project to better understand how program participants in these contexts interpret and practice Feminism in their daily lives.
Participants offered rich insights into the complexity of feminist leadership. They pointed to compassion, gender, and social justice as core elements, along with the importance of addressing exclusion rooted in patriarchy and other forms of discrimination. Those interviewed also note how men and boys can play a part in promotion of social justice. Across the interviews, women spoke clearly about how individual power can lead to shared power and identified multiple ways they have strengthened their leadership and deepened their participation in community and public life.
