The Ballot Must Be the Way

Iknow that you know, how can you not? It’s all over the news, all over the world so, I wanted you to know what I see from my frame of reference as one who appreciates you, values you and loves who you are being right now in this most unprecedented moment in our lives as citizens of America. How are you, what are you thinking and more importantly how are you choosing to respond? In the Spirit of Malcolm X who advocated The Ballot or the Bullet,” Malcolm X advised African Americans to judiciously exercise their right to vote, . . .

So, the Supreme court populated by a majority Republican selected justices who revealed their commitment to the Maga post old Republican party which represented American values where no man was above the law including the USA President. Yesterdays ruling made an unprecedented choice to declare that the President while in office is immune from any act he does as part of his official duties. So . . .

What does the Supreme Court’s ruling on the Trump (the President) immunity case mean?

results of a presidential election without any supportive proof an official role of the President? People, people, my people you have got to tune in and take our responsibility seriously. If voting is currently the only way to lead us back to some semblance of an American life we know then vote you must!

Key points from the ruling include:

1. Distinction Between Official and Private Conduct: The Court highlighted the challenge of distinguishing between a president's official acts and private conduct. While some justices, like Brett Kavanaugh, expressed concerns about criminal statutes applying to presidential acts, others, including Ketanji Brown Jackson, emphasized the need for accountability for unlawful acts even if committed during official duties, Supreme Court appears likely to side with Trump on some presidential immunity.

Overall, the Supreme Court's decision indicates a careful balancing act between maintaining the integrity and independence of the presidency and ensuring that no one is above the law.

What does Justice Sotomayor think about this ?

The current situation revolves around the U.S. Supreme Court's decision regarding former President Donald Trump's claim of immunity from prosecution for actions he took while in office. Trump has been indicted on charges related to his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. His legal team argued that he should have immunity for these actions, claiming they were within the scope of his official duties as president.

The Supreme Court's recent ruling on former President Donald Trump's claim of immunity has significant implications. The Court ruled that Trump does not have absolute immunity from criminal prosecution for actions he took while in office that are alleged to be outside his official duties. This decision stems from charges related to his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election. Now isn’t that the oximonam? When is leading a resurrection to overturn the

2. Impact on Presidential Immunity: The ruling sets a precedent that former presidents can be subject to criminal prosecution for actions taken during their tenure if those actions are deemed outside the scope of their official duties. This decision may impact how future presidents conduct themselves, knowing that their actions could be scrutinized and potentially prosecuted after leaving office: Supreme Court appears likely to side with Trump on some presidential immunity.

3. Potential Complications for Ongoing Investigations: While the ruling allows prosecutions to proceed, the exact categorization of Trump's actions (whether they were official or private) might still need to be litigated in lower courts. This could delay proceedings and complicate efforts to hold a trial before the 2024 election.

The Supreme Court's ruling rejected the notion of absolute immunity for a former president, determining that Trump could be prosecuted for actions deemed outside his official duties. This decision has important implications for presidential accountability, suggesting that former presidents can face legal consequences for their actions in office if those actions are considered personal or outside their official responsibilities).

Justice Sonia Sotomayor voiced strong concerns during the hearings, challenging the idea that a president could use their office for personal gain without legal repercussions. She emphasized the need for accountability and questioned the defense's arguments, highlighting the potential dangers of granting such broad immunity.

So, my people go forth as we prepare for our future and research, listen and choose on what you know to be true for you.

Living Chicago

Preserving Nature and Connecting Communities

Cook County is home to a little over 5 million residents across 166 cities. Forty percent of the state's population lives in this one county out of 102, and approximately 22% of the county’s residents are Black. It can be a shock to realize that 7 out of 10 Black Illinoisans live in a single county.

This demographic concentration creates a diversity of needs that require additional resources, partnerships, and allies. The Forest Preserve District of Cook County (FPDCC) serves everyone in the region and is dedicated to habitat protection, wildlife care, and connecting the public to nature. Despite having a budget of nearly $190 million, there are still funding gaps for programming across 70,000 acres of land.

Debra Walker-Johnson, president of the Forest Preserve Foundation (FPF), admits that raising awareness and money for programs not covered by tax dollars is no easy feat, but it is certainly rewarding. She has over 25 years of experience

in the nonprofit sector, with much of her work in workforce development.

“The forests are our county's lungs, and they are places of rest and renewal,” said Walker-Johnson. As the philanthropic arm of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, FPF raises money and awareness for activities and initiatives in the forest preserves.

FPF should not be confused with Friends of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, which also raises money and runs programs in the forest preserves.

“There may be special projects that the forest preserves are looking to introduce, or there may be limits on available funding for some projects. Sometimes people don’t want to donate money to government entities, so we are an organization that can receive those donations in such instances,” Walker-Johnson shared.

FPF works on various projects and programs, constantly finding ways to help Cook County residents take advantage of the outdoor amenities close to home.

“There’s so much to do year-round. We have campgrounds with fishing, nature centers, preserves with zip-lining, golf courses, horseback riding, and even waterparks. There's something different at each of them,” Walker-Johnson said.

One such program is the Conservation Corps, which provides paid, hands-on

experiences to participants from across Cook County’s diverse communities, including those with barriers to employment. Walker-Johnson has seen firsthand the impact of the program, leading some participants to full-time county employment.

“We must be concerned about nature. We want the Forest Preserves to be a legacy for generations to come. Connecting our youth with nature is part of making that a reality through our programs,” she said.

As part of their ongoing fundraising efforts, FPF hosts events that offer people access to unparalleled outdoor experiences.

“'Jazzin’ in the Preserves' is a fundraiser we are hosting on July 18th. This is our first time doing live jazz music. We’ve held golf outings for years, but we’re excited to bring out some phenomenal jazz artists while introducing people to Thatcher Woods, a place they may have never visited. People can bring their own food and lawn chairs, and just sit back and enjoy the forest preserves and their evening,” Walker-Johnson said.

With 70,000 acres to explore, you never have to travel far for a green respite. To learn more about the programs and events, visit forestpreservefoundation. org.

Take Me With U A Contemporary Circus in the Key of Prince

Less than 24 hours before showtime, the iconic circus in a church welcomes the performers for their first rehearsal of Take Me With U,a Prince-inspired extravaganza. Riggers, lights, sound, and run-throughs fill the air, setting the scene for opening night. In the shadows, performers stretch and walk through their choreography. Crew members take meticulous notes to score the pieces and discuss each performer's needs. Leading the team of riggers is Lulu, accompanied by Jordan, the backup rigger, and Ashley, the stage manager. Together, they orchestrate the intricate aerial acts, where safety and precision are crucial to the show's success.

For Jason Span, a Navy veteran and former artistic gymnast, this performance holds special significance. Introduced to pole dancing and aerial silks, he became obsessed with aerial artistry. His portrayal of a piece from Prince's "Purple Rain" brings back childhood memories and a sense of freedom, and Jason is thrilled to be performing.

In just a few hours, the space will be transformed into a spectacle of awe and wonder. As Chris Rooney, the creative director and founder of Purple Onyx Productions, reminds the performers that rehearsal is coming to a close, there is a captivating energy of gratitude and grace. Rooney is ready. They all are.

It’s showtime.

The theater slowly fills with nearly 120 people. Final preparations are made silently. Couples take their seats in the first rows as DJ Dhe-Di Beats soundscapes the entrance. Prince, embodied by Jean Carlos Claudio, swaggers into the space, greeting guests, taking photos, and being Prince. A contemporary circus is quite a different experience, and

while there weren’t clowns, there were many moments of laughter and lightheartedness that filled the space. Richhued lights painted each beautiful Black and brown body. Some performers floated, others climbed, each time coupled with thrilling drops or aerial acrobatics on straps, flying pole, duo cube, silks, and the hoop. Each act had you holding your breath one minute and sighing in astonishment the next. Captivating and unforgettable are two words to describe the evening. Each talented act was paired with a song from the Purple Rain album, and some even took the opportunity to dance.

On to the Acts:

Jeanne Sparrow, a local MC and radio personality, was the ringmaster for the evening. Her energy kept the crowd on the voyage of Prince. Donned in deep Prince Purple attire, she kept the audience more than entertained.

The Duo Cube was mastered by Devorar and Hora Babylon. Their mesmerizing connection seemed always to threaten to break. Together, they balanced in trust, confidence, and togetherness, brought to life by “Computer Blue.” Rooney made a public proclamation affirming his greatness in spirit and flesh, performing to “Baby I’m a Star.” His body lifted and twisted around the straps as he was hoisted into the air. Kaya Sky, talented, flexible, and strong, married the artistry of her unique forms with the music, creating a beautiful visual. Lucretia Denise, another aerial phenom, performed her solo to “When Doves Cry” on a solo silk. Watching her wrap herself, securing her own safety while elegantly expressing herself, was unforgettable.

Take Me With U did not disappoint, and Aloft is not just a circus performing space -- it is truly a sanctuary where performers find freedom and all belong.

Embracing Intersectionality: Stepping Forward with Purpose- Part 1

Women often find themselves at the crossroads of various identities and experiences. Each of these intersections shapes who we are, guiding our journey and influencing our purpose. Today, more than ever, I see women ready to embrace their multifaceted selves, stepping forward with confidence and intention. This blog is dedicated to women ready to explore the intersectionality of their purpose and embark on their journey to stepping forward.

What is meant by intersectionality? Coined by Kimberlé Crenshaw, intersectionality describes how different aspects of a person's identity—such as race, gender, sexuality, and class—intersect to create unique experiences. For women, understanding intersectionality means recognizing that our path is influenced by more than just our gender. It involves acknowledging that the layers of our identity that shape our perspectives, challenges, and strengths.

One of the first steps to embracing a woman's intersectionality is recognizing her multifaceted nature, which is a key to discovering her true purpose. This begins with self-reflection on the various aspects of your identity. Consider your background, experiences, and how your purpose, passion, and vision intersect. Ask yourself ques-

The Voice Of Black Chicago

tions like, "What makes me unique?" and "What unique perspective do I bring to the table?"

As women, we must recognize that every aspect of our identity contributes to our strengths and resilience. This includes our personal experiences, professional skills, and cultural heritage. Each of these elements plays a crucial role in shaping our purpose.

On a personal note and as a nonprofit founder and entrepreneur, I have dedicated my life to empowering women to embrace intersectionality and recognize the unique strengths they bring to each table they sit at. With over three decades of experience in both profit and nonprofit sectors, I strive to create opportunities for women to discover their purpose and step forward with confidence. Through my work, I aim to inspire and support women in harnessing their multifaceted identities to make a meaningful impact in the world.

Another crucial step for women in embracing their intersectionality and stepping forward with purpose is to identify their passions—plural. This is because our purpose often arises from multiple interests and drives, reflecting the diverse. aspects of our identities. By acknowledging and pursuing these varied passions, women can create a more holistic and fulfilling sense of purpose. Reflect on what drives you, what excites you, what issues you care about, and where you want to make a difference. Then set inclusive goals for your journey ahead, considering the broader implications of your actions. When you align your goals with your values, it creates a purpose that deeply resonates with who you are.

Also, collaborate, collaborate, collaborate. Collaboration is currency! This require women to seek support and community. Surround yourself with a supportive community that understand and values your multifaceted identity. Connect with like-minded women who share similar experiences who aren’t afraid to provide encouragement, inspiration and valuable insight as you navigate your journey.

Finally, stepping forward requires a willingness to grow and adapt. Be open to learning from your experiences and adjusting your path as needed. Throughout my journey, I’ve embraced being a lifelong learner. Women should practice mindfulness and avoid a fixed mindset, continually striving to cultivate a growth mindset.

Stepping forward with purpose as a woman means embracing the intersectionality of our identities and leveraging our unique strength to create meaningful change. When we as women, take time to reflect on our multifaceted selves, identifying our passion, and able to set inclusive goals, that when the journey begins allowing us to better navigate with confidence and intention.

In the words of Audre Lorde, “I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own”. Let us celebrate the diversity within ourselves and support each other as we step forward in a future where our purpose shines brightly.

Immunity for All

Iread in an article published in “The Hill,” where John Dean is quoted stating his interpretation of the recent Supreme Court’s immunity ruling regarding a sitting president, “Well, there are two rulings in this decision. There’s a 6-3 for presumptive immunity, but there’s also a 5-4 on you can’t even have the evidence of official conduct come to play,” John Dean states, “This is very…this to me, appears to certainly influence the existing law on presidential conduct [and] what’s available…evidentiary speaking. Amy Coney Barrett said she didn’t think that it should be so restricted as the decision of the court itself was, so I think that Nixon would have survived. I think he would have walked under this ruling.”

The world knows now that the U.S. Supreme Court ruled a 6-3 decision on Monday, ruling along the ideological thinking that presidents have absolute immunity for actions that fall within the core responsibilities of official presidential duties while in office and are “at least presumptively immune” for all other official acts.

The ruling, written by Chief Justice John Roberts, noted that presidents need to execute their duties "fearlessly and fairly" without the threat of prosecution. He also ruled a former president’s official acts are protected against being introduced as evidence in a criminal case against a former president.

Justice Barrett, disagreed with this portion of the rul-

ing, writing, “I disagree with that holding; on this score, I agree with the dissent… The Constitution does not require blinding juries to the circumstances surrounding conduct for which Presidents can be held liable.”

So, the Watergate controversy is the closest situation America has that can be compared to what trapped and framed Nixon’s Watergate argument. The 1972 breakin at the offices of the Democratic National Committee, which were located in the Watergate building was tasked to officials working to reelect Nixon. Working to reelect oneself, the same as Trump’s rationale for creating a false circumstance of voter fraud is not acting in one’s presidential capacity. Thus, given the facts it doesn’t seem that Nixon would be exonerated under the new precedence.

Nixon’s advisors and cabinet members some of whom later resigned and were convicted of offenses related to the cover-up, knew that they were operating under the single-minded desire to win an election at any cost.

Equally shameful of the actual intent was Nixon’s denial of any involvement. However, the very different Supreme Court ruling of that time forced him to hand over tape recordings which showed he attempted to avoid the investigation. He resigned in 1973 to avoid an inevitable impeachment by Congress.

Pardoned later by President Ford for any crimes he may have committed in office; Because Nixon resigned

he was able to avoid felon status, unlike Donald Trump.

Accordingly, John Dean is said to be looking at the known evidence at the time of the scandal, but looking at the bills of impeachment, Nixon is “not responsible” and has “no criminal liability.” What his intention is, is unknown.

However, he is recorded as having said “… that was considered to be one of the elements of a high crime and misdemeanor if a president had committed a crime. Well, there are no more crimes for presidents in official conduct,” Dean said.

The obvious partisan Supreme Court handed the former President a huge win as he currently stares down a federal criminal election subversion case, brought by special counsel Jack Smith. Their consumption of time to arrive at a ruling has already delayed the trial, and now that the Supreme Court has sent the case back to a lower court to determine whether the Former President’s actions on Jan. 6, 2021, warrant protection from criminal prosecution for decisions made while in the White House, the trial will be delayed further.

Dazed and Improper Presidential Debate Recap

Last Thursday night, President Joe Biden debated former President Donald Trump in the first presidential debate of this election term. The debate was hosted by CNN and moderated by Jake Tapper and Dana Bash. The ninety-minute debate drew approximately 51.27 million viewers, which accounts for 31.77% of registered voters in the United States.

This debate was notable as it involved a former president recently convicted on 34 felony counts and an incumbent president whose son was convicted on felony gun charges. According to polls, Trump won the debate by a 1% margin.

Importance of Debates in the Election Process

Debates provide voters with insights into the candidates' policies, demeanor, and ability to handle pressure. They also highlight key differences between the candidates, helping undecided voters make informed decisions.

In U.S. history, there have been a total of 30 presidential debate series, starting with the first televised debate in 1960 between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. After a hiatus, debates resumed in 1976 and have occurred in every presidential election since then. Historically, incumbent Presidents don’t perform as well as their opponents in the first debate. Last Thursday's debate followed this trend.

Facts and Figures by President Biden

Biden inaccurately described two key Medicare policies.

He falsely asserted that no US troops had been killed during his time in office. Biden repeated misleading figures about billionaires' tax rates.

He claimed that Trump wants to eliminate Social Security.

Biden falsely stated that the unemployment rate was 15% when he took office. The overall employment rate during the Trump Administration was around 5%, not 15%.

He inaccurately claimed that the Border Patrol union endorsed him, later clarifying he meant agents' support for a border bill he backed.

Biden exaggerated Trump's 2020 remarks about treating Covid-19 by injecting disinfectant.

Former President Donald Trump

Trump was aggressive, focusing on Biden’s age and recent policy decisions. Despite his legal troubles, Trump maintained a strong presence, appealing to his base with familiar rhetoric and promises.

Facts and Falsehoods by Former President Trump

Democratic-led states allow babies to be executed after birth. This claim is false; every state explicitly criminalizes infanticide.

Trump claimed all legal scholars wanted Roe v. Wade overturned, which is not

true; many wanted Roe preserved.

Trump said there were no terror attacks during his presidency, but several incidents, including the 2017 New York City attack and the 2019 Florida military base shooting, were classified as terrorist acts.

Trump claimed Iran didn’t fund terror groups during his presidency, but experts confirmed that funding continued.

The US has provided more aid to Ukraine than Europe has.

Biden for years referred to Black people as “super predators.”

Biden is planning to quadruple people’s taxes.

Then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi turned down 10,000 National Guard troops for the US Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Americans don’t pay the cost of their tariffs on China and other countries.

Europe accepts no American cars. He is the president who got the Veterans Choice program through Congress.

Fraud marred the results of the 2020 election.

Highlights and Key Moments from the Debate

One memorable exchange was when Trump said, "I don’t know what he just said, and I’m not sure he knows either." This line became a social media highlight, emphasizing the nature of Biden's debate performance. Trump’s response to questions about his legal issues, where he deflected and pivoted to attacking Biden’s family, further intensified the personal nature of the debate. Toward the end, both Trump and Biden debated about their golf skills, which added a lighter yet surreal moment to the evening.

Public Reactions to the Candidates' Performances

Public reactions were polarized. Trump’s supporters praised his assertiveness and refusal to back down, while critics viewed his behavior as disrespectful and unbecoming of a presidential candidate. "Trump's performance was exactly what his supporters wanted to see – strong, assertive, and unyielding,"

said Republican strategist Mark Davis.

On the other hand, Biden’s supporters commended his composure and focus on policy, though detractors cited his occasional lack of clarity as concerning.

"Biden came across as steady and experienced, which is what many voters are looking for in these turbulent times," commented Democratic analyst Sarah Jones.

Candidates' Stances on Important Issues

Healthcare: Biden defended the Affordable Care Act and proposed expanding healthcare access. "We need to build on what we have and make it better," Biden said, emphasizing his plan to lower prescription drug prices and protect coverage for pre-existing conditions. Trump argued for repealing and replacing it with a more market-driven approach, stating, "Obamacare is a disaster. We need a system that works for everyone, not just the bureaucrats in Washington."

Economy: Biden focused on rebuilding the middle class through infrastructure investment and clean energy jobs. "It's time we invest in America's future, creating jobs and driving growth through innovation," he said. Trump emphasized tax cuts and deregulation to stimulate economic growth, asserting, "My administration delivered the strongest economy in history, and we can do it again."

Foreign Policy: Trump touted his administration’s foreign policy achievements, including negotiations in the Middle East. "We've brought peace and stability to regions long plagued by conflict," he claimed. Biden criticized Trump’s approach to international alliances and pledged to restore America's standing on the global stage. "We need to rebuild our alliances and lead with diplomacy," Biden stated.

Impact of These Discussions on Voters' Opinions

The debate's discussions on these key issues likely reinforced existing opinions rather than changing minds. However,

“Neither candidate was present in mind”

the clarity (or lack thereof) in presenting these issues may influence undecided voters as they weigh their options. " waasVoters are looking for concrete plans and assurances, especially Neither Candidate

Moderator Performance

Evaluation of the Moderator's Handling of the Debate

Jake Tapper and Dana Bash faced the challenging task of managing the debate's heated exchanges. Their attempts to maintain order were only partially successful, given the candidates' frequent interruptions and disregard for time limits. "Moderating a debate with such high stakes and strong personalities is never easy, and Tapper and Bash did their best under difficult circumstances," noted media critic Laura Simmons.

Criticisms and Praises for the Moderator's Performance

Critics argued that the moderators should have been more assertive in controlling the debate’s tone, while others praised them for their efforts under difficult circumstances. "The moderators did an admirable job trying to keep things on track, but they were often overshadowed by the candidates' interruptions," commented journalist Peter Brown. The balance between allowing free debate and maintaining decorum proved challenging.

Influence of the Moderator on the Overall Tone and Flow of the Debate

The moderators' handling of the debate undeniably influenced its overall tone, which was marked by frequent clashes and interruptions. Their ability to steer the conversation back to substantive issues, despite these challenges, was notable. "Tapper and Bash managed to keep the debate focused on key issues, despite the chaotic moments," said political analyst Mary Thompson.

Post-Debate Analysis

In the aftermath of the debate, political analysts on multiple platforms spent more time highlighting the physical fitness of President Biden and not the fact that Former President Trump misfired and misdirected a multitude of responses. In some cases, he didn’t even answer the questions asked. While the muted mics helped with the candidates' history of interrupting each

other, their counterarguments made it so the issues that should have been discussed were not. The true impact on voter sentiment will become clearer in the coming weeks as new polls reflect the public's reaction to this high-stakes confrontation. The debate appears to have had a minimal impact on overall voter preferences, with most respondents sticking to their pre-debate choices.

The conservative Project 2025 was not discussed, and the time spent on Palestine, Israel, and other war-torn countries was waylaid by discussions of previous tenures of their presidencies. Trump mentioned spending more than he discussed the needs of the American people and while Biden stepped to the podium with a presumed upper hand, he didn’t exhibit the bite necessary to strike against Trump’s fallacies.

The first presidential debate of this election cycle was a critical moment for both candidates, offering a glimpse into their strategies and potential governance styles. As the election approaches, future debates will continue to play a significant role in shaping the political landscape. "Debates are a vital part of our democratic process, providing voters with the information they need to make informed decisions," said former debate moderator and journalist, John Roberts.

New Chatter about Biden's Candidacy

In the aftermath of the debate, there is new chatter that President Biden should remove himself from candidacy. With about 185 days until the election, some argue that the Democrats need a chance to consider other candidates. Would the Democratic Party be better off without President Biden? Should candidates like Cornel West and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. be on the next debate stage for the sake of giving voters a greater number of options? These questions are becoming more pressing as the election draws nearer.

The debate has not only spotlighted the current frontrunners but has also raised critical questions about the future of the Democratic Party. As discussions about potential new candidates continue, the party must weigh its options carefully to ensure the best possible representation for the upcoming election.

Chicago’s Eco-Friendly Music Festival Returns

The Technology Renewable Energy Command Center (TRECC) and FULLFEST, operated by Open Air Affairs, are partnering for their third annual, greenest music festival in Chicago. TRECC offers free programs including providing technology workforce certifications, renewable energy workforce development, civic engagement opportunities, and more. Overall, the organization actively supports individuals on their journey towards a more sustainable and enriched future.

It is an ideal collaboration and one that FULLFEST producers are proud to have.

“The vision has always been to find partners that believe in the vision of Eden Place Nature Center and novel ways of engaging the Black community on sustainability and environmental issues,” Mila Marshall, the festival's creator, said.

Eden Place Nature Center is Chicago’s only privately owned nature center, located at 4417 S. Stewart. The festival began in 2021 and is essentially a party with a purpose. Nearly 200 guests will enjoy 3.5 acres of private land in the center of the city. Guests are introduced to environmental issues and opportunities through sponsorship, donations, and social media.

“I’ve been in the environmental space for over 30 years. The way we need to reach out to Black communities on climate and water issues has got to be creative… especially here in Chicago,” Marshall said.

Creativity and cultural branding are exactly what this event brings. From the iconic crow chosen as the mascot to the nature-themed art, it’s clear the festival producers are looking to do something that the traditional conservation movement has been challenged in accomplishing.

Returning to the festival are 24 Soul Selector DJs on 3 stages as well as Moors Brewing Co., Noel Garcia Distillery, Funkytown Brewery, and HT23. The festival also takes advantage of getting the word out using grassroots media.

In the past, everyone from boat charter companies, vegan restaurants, cosmetic companies, and golf apparel to cannabis dispensaries have sponsored the event. Small eco-friendly or outdoor companies that are Black-owned and support healthy products and services are also highlighted.

“We couldn’t be more excited at how this festival is growing. Podcasts have been a huge part of our success. The Corner Convo Podcast, Easily Offended Podcast, In The Zone, and Herb & Tou have been invaluable," Marshall said. "Besides that, our first major sponsor TRECC shows us that we are on the right pathway to bring attention to the unique ways we can engage our community on the environment and have a great time doing it."

A portion of the proceeds will do towards infrastructure improvement at the nature center. Follow the fest on Instagram @fullfestchi.

Bronzeville Art District Kicks Off 18th Season of Annual Trolley Tour

Celebrating its 18th year, the Bronzeville Art District Trolley Tour is back and better than ever this summer.

During its opening night in June, the tour attracted an impressive crowd of arts enthusiasts who took in the exhibits at its five locations (Gallery Guichard, Bronzeville Artist Lofts, Faie Afrikan Art Gallery, Blanc Gallery Chicago, and Southside Community Arts Center) as they traveled to each gallery on towering double-decker buses.

Spearheaded by Gallery Guichard co-owners Andre and Frances Guichard in 2005, the trolley tour set out to showcase the rich legacy of arts in Bronzeville through a collaboration with historic art spaces such as the South Side Community Arts Center (SSCAC) and new galleries emerging in the neighborhood.

Today, the Bronzeville Art District is known as the largest African-American art district in the country, and the trolley tour is among the nation’s largest art crawls.

Before the tour buses arrived for their first pick-up on opening night, a line of patrons stretched for two blocks from Gallery Guichard (located at 436 E 47th) nearly to Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Next door to Gallery Guichard, designer Bruce Gage’s Flyball artist boutique showcases Negro League baseball apparel, recalling Bronzeville’s critical relationship to the founding of the African-American baseball league and its premier team, the Chicago American Giants. Flyball also features menswear from Gage’s Miglio di Mario Uomo brand.

Above Gallery Guichard and Flyball, tour-goers can also visit the artist studios of the Bronzeville Artist Lofts. With a choice of five lofts, visitors are in for a real treat of meeting artists and viewing the spaces where they work.

Along with its deep connections to the arts, the site of Gallery Guichard, Flyball, and the artist lofts is also a place of great historical importance in Bronzeville. Before it was a hub of African-American art, the building that houses Gallery Guichard was the Ben Franklin Store, the world’s first African-American department store. Established in the 1940s, the Ben Franklin store was owned by the Jones brothers, a family of policy entrepreneurs who generated millions of dollars in wealth within the Bronzeville community.

If you need a little time to relax with your cocktail and refreshments before boarding the bus, be sure to check out Gallery Guichard’s Great Migration Sculpture Garden. The Great Migration Sculpture Garden is located on the lot that was once the site of Bronzeville’s famed Gerri’s Palm Tavern.

When you’re ready to hitch a ride and explore the other gallery sites, the double-decker buses of the Bronzeville Arts District Trolley Tour are also an entertaining adventure. On warm nights, the open-air upper deck is lovely, and tour guide presentations are filled with interesting information about the galleries and the Bronzeville community. As you hop on the double-deckers, be sure to catch a ride with octogenarian tour guide William Scott III, a Bronzeville institution in his own right.

Down at the 43rd Street arts corridor, Faie Afrikan Art Gallery featured sculpture and cultural artifacts from Western, Eastern, Central, and Southern regions of Africa. On opening night, visitors to the gallery were greeted with a jazz trumpet soloist as owner Faye Edwards talked to them about the origins of pieces in the collection. “It is important for these sculptures to be in a community of African descendant people,” Edwards noted about the importance of African art in Bronzeville.

“African art and sculpture help our

community get in touch with itself.”

Next door to Faie Afrikan Art Gallery, neighborhood anchor Norm’s Bistro has a spacious outdoor patio for art trekkers who may need a quick bite between stops (or dinner afterward).

The remaining two stops on the tour, Blanc Art Gallery and SSCAC, are a great combination of community legacy and contemporary art. Co-owned by chef Cliff Rome and community developer Eileen Rhodes, Blanc Gallery showcases cutting-edge local and non-local artists whose work engages a wide range of socio-cultural issues.

On the opening night of the tour, Blanc featured "Frontline Prophet: James Baldwin," a traveling exhibition dedicated to the iconic 20th-century author.

Located at 38th and South Michigan Avenue, the SSCAC is the bedrock of African-American arts in Chicago and the oldest institution on the Bronzeville Art District Trolley Tour. Mobilized in 1940 by Dr. Margaret Burroughs, the community rallied together to purchase a then-abandoned mansion and transformed it into an arts center.

Today, the SSCAC remains a pillar of the Bronzeville arts community providing a variety of exhibits, programs, and events. On the opening night of the tour, the SSCAC was abuzz with visitors exploring their contemporary and historic collections. Just a few steps away from the SSCAC, be sure to check out the “Bronzeville Renaissance” mural, which chronicles the neighborhood’s storied past and promising future.

“The Bronzeville Art District Trolley Tour is a living testament that community collaboration is possible,” Guichard said as the first night of the 2024 season winds down. “What you see tonight is the result of an 18-year collaboration that started small and has grown steadily each year."

For seasoned art/culture connoisseurs and newcomers alike, the Bronzeville Art District Trolley Tour is an excellent opportunity to experience the rich art and culture of the Bronzeville community. The Bronzeville Art District Trolley Tour 2024 will take place the third Friday of each month through September. The event is free to the public. The Power of Networking and Education in the Cannabis Industry Insights from the Equity Workshop Tour at Industrious in Fulton Market

Cannabis entrepreneurs and industry professionals met at Industrious in Fulton Market for an afternoon of networking and conversation. The Equity Workshop Tour has become a hallmark event for cannabis entrepreneurs across the nation. Facilitated by Mike Lomuto of the Minority Cannabis Business Association (MCBA), the tour impressively stopped in over a dozen cities across the nation, including Chicago. Conversations ranged from civic engagement to building relationships with community members.

Belicia Royster, executive director of the Social Equity Empowerment Network (S.E.E.N.), shared insights on the types of commitments entrepreneurs need to make to see change. “You have to engage, you have to know your legislators, and you have to be able to do that at the city, county, state, and federal levels,” Royster shared during her fireside chat.

Propaganda and Profits

There are mixed feelings about cannabis. Royster, like many others, realizes the present harm of past propaganda. Plant-touching businesses like growers and dispensaries wishing to operate anywhere in Illinois are required to hold a community engagement meeting. As a former lobbyist and lead strategist for her organization, Royster made it clear to workshop participants just how deeply ingrained misinformation and outdated information is impacting owners and hopefuls. “The same people who want economic development sometimes are the same people that don’t want cannabis. We have to remember some of them grew up in an era where weed wasn’t medicine but a drug that got people locked up. It is going to take us communicating

and re-educating people,” Royster said.

Know the Law… Prepare for It to Change

Royster didn’t mince words when talking about the law. For her, success and resilience in the cannabis industry grow directly from legislative smarts. About two-thirds of hands were raised when the audience was asked if they had read the cannabis law. “You have to read and know these laws for yourself. It isn’t good enough to hire someone to tell you; everyone on your team needs to know how the state legislation impacts the business, where you can be located, and everything related to how you can make money,” Royster shared. From her vantage point, all parties must be able to leverage that knowledge to remain compliant and understand how parts of the law impact people differently, especially when working in coalitions.

Coalitions and Community

The right connections in cannabis can catapult a company to success. But Royster warns the audience about being too trusting and not taking the time to understand the intentions and ethics of partners and allies. “Yes, we are in business, and when we connect, partner, or join coalitions, it’s like a marriage. You have to connect and vet seriously because you only get one reputation,” she said.

The fireside chat concluded with Royster reminding everyone to keep showing up at events like the Tour and to build connections mindfully. Next, the tour will be stopping in Cleveland, Ohio, and Detroit, Michigan. For more information on the Equity Workshop Tour, visit www.minoritycannabis.org.

Checks and Balances

Think back to civics class. Do you recall the three branches of government? Do you remember their distinct purposes and responsibilities? Regardless, let's review them together. The three branches of American democracy are:

The Legislative Branch: This branch is responsible for making laws. It is composed of the two houses of Congress: the Senate and the House of Representatives. The Senate has 100 members, two from each state, serving six-year terms. The House of Representatives has 435 members, with representation based on each state's population, serving two-year terms.

The Executive Branch: This branch is responsible for enforcing laws. It is headed by the president, who serves a four-year term and can be elected for up to two terms. The president is supported by the vice president, the cabinet, and various federal agencies and departments.

The Judicial Branch: This branch is responsible for interpreting laws and ensuring they are applied fairly. It is made up of the court system, with the Supreme Court being the highest authority. The Supreme Court has nine justices, including one chief justice, who serve lifetime appointments. Lower federal courts include appellate courts and district courts.

These three branches operate on a system of checks and balances to ensure no single branch becomes too powerful.

When one branch disrespects the other branches, the power hangs in the balance. This is one of the most important checks of our government, which is threatened by those seeking to break and destroy the balance of power so that the executive branch can function more absolutely, without checks from the legislative or judicial branches.

Why MAGA Policies Are Detrimental to Black Communities

MAGA proponents peddle baseless claims of widespread voter fraud to justify voter suppression tactics that disproportionately target Black voters. From restrictive voter ID laws to purging voter rolls to limiting early voting hours, these measures are designed to silence the voices of marginalized communities and maintain the status quo of power and privilege.

As a representative deeply invested in the well-being of my constituents, I feel compelled to shed light on the harmful impact of the MAGA agenda. While its proponents claim to champion America’s greatness, the reality is far from uplifting, especially for Black Americans.

Let’s be clear: Make America Great Again (MAGA) is not a call for progress; it’s a thinly veiled attempt to turn back the clock on the hard-fought gains of marginalized communities, including Black Americans. From voting rights to healthcare to economic opportunity, the policies espoused under the guise of MAGA pose a direct threat to the ad-

vancements we’ve made in the pursuit of equality and justice.

Take voting rights, for example. MAGA proponents peddle baseless claims of widespread voter fraud to justify voter suppression tactics that disproportionately target Black voters. The purpose of restrictive voter ID laws, purging voter rolls, and limiting early voting hours is to silence marginalized communities and maintain the status quo of power and privilege.

Healthcare is another area where the MAGA agenda falls short for Black Americans. The relentless attacks on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) threaten to strip millions of Americans, particularly those in underserved communities, of access to affordable healthcare. For Black Americans who already face disparities in healthcare access and outcomes, the repeal of the ACA would be nothing short of disastrous.

And let’s not forget about economic opportunity. While MAGA proponents tout a booming economy, the reality is

that Black Americans continue to face disproportionately high rates of unemployment, poverty, and wage stagnation.

The tax cuts and deregulation championed by the MAGA agenda only exacerbate these disparities, further widening the gap between the haves and the havenots.

The most insidious message of MAGA is the underlying idea that America was somehow greater in the past—a past marred by slavery, white supremacy, segregation, and systemic racism. For Black Americans, the nostalgia of MAGA is not just misguided; it’s deeply offensive. It ignores the struggles and sacrifices of generations past who fought tirelessly for civil rights and equality.

As a nation, we cannot afford to romanticize an era of oppression and inequality. We must instead confront the injustices of the past and work towards a future where every American, regardless of race or background, can thrive. That means rejecting the divisive rhetoric of MAGA and embracing policies that pro-

mote justice, equality, and inclusion for all.

So, to my fellow Black Americans, I urge you to see through the empty promises of MAGA and recognize it for what it truly is: a dangerous regression that threatens to undo the progress we’ve made. Let’s unite in opposition to hate, white supremacy, and division and strive toward a future where all citizens can experience the full potential of America.

Summer Family Wellness

Check out these tips on how to engage the family while also minding your health. “A healthy attitude is contagious but don’t wait to catch it from others. Be a carrier.” – Tom Stoppard.

It’s easy to get caught up in the 9-5 rigamarole and forget to connect with your loved ones. Also if you’re anything like me, summer is one of the periods when you revel in barbecue and dream about potato salad.

By the time September arrives, you’ve wondered how the summer flew by so fast and how you gained an extra seven pounds. After all, the most refreshing drinks are high in calories. A pina colada or a strawberry daiquiri can hit the spot, but it can also provide an influx of calories at about 800 calories per drink. The wedding buffet at your cousin’s nuptials is high in calories and don’t get us started on the cake! Additionally, studies show that vacation weight gain is largely based on water retention, foods are higher in sodium and our body regulates these changes causing an average weight increase of 5-10, on one vacation!

cal farmers market. Small farmers don’t have a profit margin as high as chain grocery stores and every dollar helps them prepare for the next season.

spend it. Remember, it’s never too late to try a new thing. If you haven’t gone hiking or canoeing, why not do it this summer? There’s still time.

So we’ve crafted some summer alternatives to help connect with your family in the warmer months that won’t break the bank, can be done indoors, and will keep those pesky pounds at bay.

Five ways to stay trim for the whole family

1. Stay active together: Plan family outings that involve physical activity, such as hiking, biking, or playing sports together. This can help you burn calories while also bonding with your loved ones.

2. Cook healthy meals together: Instead of going out to eat, try cooking nutritious meals together as a family. This can help you control portion sizes and make healthier food choices.

3. Limit sugary drinks: Instead of reaching for sugary sodas or juices, opt for water, unsweetened tea, or infused water. This can help you cut down on empty calories and stay hydrated.

4. Practice mindful eating: Be aware of your hunger cues and avoid mindless snacking. Sit down and savor your meals with your family, focusing on the flavors and textures of the food.

Note: it’s always best to eat the colors of the rainbow. Fruits and vegetables ensure your immune system is pumping with the vitamins and minerals it needs.

Protip: assemble your loved ones and head to your lo-

5. Plan active family outings: Instead of spending all your free time lounging by the pool or on the couch, plan fun activities that get you moving. This could include going for a walk after dinner, playing football at the park, or taking a family bike ride.

Personal note: Our family has incorporated jumping rope into our evening routine as a regular cardio exercise. It helps limit screen time for the kids and serves as an enjoyable way to keep them active and involved. Staying healthy and active while connecting with family in the summer doesn't have to be a daunting task. By incorporating simple and enjoyable activities into your routine, you can create lasting memories with your loved ones while keeping your weight in check. Remember to focus on nutritious food choices, staying hydrated, and being mindful of your eating habits. Additionally, these tips can easily be adapted for solo activities, allowing you to prioritize your health and well-being whether you're alone or with family. From cooking nutritious meals for yourself to engaging in outdoor activities or mindful eating practices, taking care of your physical and mental well-being is essential. Self-care and healthy habits are key to enjoying a fulfilling and balanced summer, whether with loved ones or solo. Don't forget, that supporting local farmers markets can also be a great option for organic produce. You'd be taking a stand for your health while investing in your community. By following these tips, you can enjoy a fun and healthy summer, no matter how you

Greek Lemon Chicken

On a cool summer day like today, something light and easy yet filling is perfect. Think about a nice mellow yet filling soup, and the Greek-style chicken soup loaded with rice and lemon is a perfect way to chill warmly, of course, and feel comfortably full and satisfied. Preparation instructions for cooking it in an instant pot or slow cooker are provided so that it’s easy and accessible for everyone!

Prep Time: 15 minutes

Cook Time: 1 hour

Total Time: 1 hour 15 minutes

EQUIPMENT

Crock-Pot Programmable Slow Cooker 6-quart Instant Pot

INGREDIENTS

3 large chicken breasts

1 onion, diced

⅓ pound carrots, sliced thinly

3 medium potatoes, diced

2 stalks celery, sliced thinly

4 cloves garlic

1 cup rice

½ teaspoon ground black pepper

8 cups chicken stock

¾ cup lemon juice

2 eggs

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Place chopped veggies, potatoes, and rice in a 6-quart or larger instant pot or slow cooker.

- 1 onion, ⅓ pound carrots, 3 medium

potatoes, 2 stalks celery, 1 cup rice

2. Press or finely dice garlic and add to the pot along with ground pepper.

- 4 cloves garlic, ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

3. Place chicken on top of the veggies. Pour broth over the top.

- 3 large chicken breasts, 8 cups chicken stock

4. Pressure cooker instructions: Cook on high pressure for 15 minutes, then quick release.

- Place a damp cloth over the vent to catch any splatter.

5. Slow cooker instructions: Cook on high for 4-6 hours or low for 6-8 hours.

6. Remove the chicken breasts from the pot and allow them to rest for a few minutes. Then dice into smaller bite-sized pieces and return to the pot.

7. In a medium glass bowl, beat together eggs and lemon juice. Ladle some hot broth from the pot into the bowl while stirring. Continue to stir and add hot broth to the bowl until you have incorporated several cups of hot broth into the mixture.

- ¾ cup lemon juice, 2 eggs

8. Return the lemon/egg mixture to the pot along with the rest of the ingredients and stir to combine.

9. Slow cook on low for 30 minutes.

10. Taste and adjust salt and pepper to your taste. (The amount of salt you need will vary widely based on the broth you used.)

11. Serve with crusty bread.

12. Store leftovers in the refrigerator and slowly warm up to reheat. Heating it too quickly can cause the egg mixture to get a strange texture.

Optional: You can add cream of chicken soup and combine it with the chicken stock and lemon juice in a pot for extra rich flavor.

Kerry Washington Ushers in 2024 Chanel Collection

Some stars — like those not in the public eye — choose the comfort of consistency. You know the old adage: "If it’s not broke, don’t fix it." So, they wear the same haircut, style of makeup, and overall look day after day, year after year. That’s cool if it works for you. It is about your comfort zone and what makes you feel good about yourself. No criticism there. But thank God for the inquisitive and daring who seek to peer into the other side and pierce the veil of comfort. My best friend, for instance, has been wearing Chanel red lipstick and Chanel No. 5 perfume since high school. Clearly, they are part of her signature look. But for true lovers of beauty, the freedom to try something outside of your comfort zone is like a nice cold exhilarating shower — so refreshing, even inspiring. So when I think of Kerry Washington’s beauty progression, she is that example for all who hesitate. No question she seems to possess specific preferences if you follow her red carpet moments. She has that old stardom glamour feel and elegance that shows up every time no matter what designer she’s wearing. You can always expect her to be creative with her glam. And we could not expect anything less this 2024 year. Those of us who know embrace the direct tie of Chanel to nostalgia. Chanel’s signature tweed skirt suits, pearls, and bows, as well as the newer modernized versions of all that made Chanel the iconic brand it is, embrace the past that continues to shine

fluidly on the runway and on the street today. Such continuity of breadth and style may have been what drew that intrinsic retro sensibility that moved Kerry Washington to don the choice hairstyle for Chanel’s Haute Couture Fall/Winter 2024 show. That chic baby beehive channeled the iconic queen of elegance and glamour Audrey Hepburn — in a now moment sort of way. She brought it, like no other could, because of the ownership she takes of herself and all that she embraces.

On Monday, June 25th, at the Palais Garnier, the runway show was, as expected, a glamorous affair. The A-list crowd, which included Naomi Campbell, Michelle Williams, and Keira Knightley, was an epic celebration of the fashion house’s past and present, from the historic setting to the dramatic couture to Washington’s hairstyle that loomed like a halo on her head.

Washington’s new take on the "beehive-do" was the kiss of perfection as the crown touch to complement the black-and-white skirt suit with an attached layer of black tulle. The total beauty look included several elements that landed her unmistakably into 2024. It helps to have the right team, and Washington’s trusted team of Rob Zangardi and James Catalano kept her natural curls intact. Traditional beehive styles associated with Hepburn, Streisand, and Bardot were either sleek, sculpted, or loose curls framing the face. But Kerry's team chose to highlight the “Scandal” star’s natural transformation to

2024, making it comfortably wearable. Her updated simple, soft makeup look framed by Chanel beauty products just nailed it. Washington birthed Chanel right into 2024. And Washington isn’t the only celebrity co-signing the resurgence of this retro

hairstyle. Keke Palmer, Elle Washington, and Lana Del Rey have all sported beehive variations in recent history. So, if you were concerned this updo would leave you looking stuck in the past, let these stylish stars show you otherwise. Follow their lead and try it out for your next glam event, and be sure to incorporate some modern touches with your wardrobe and beauty if you want to avoid looking too dated.
