Florida Schools Enhance Security Amid Surge in U.S. School Shootings Two students and two teachers were killed in a tragic shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, on Wednesday morning, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI). The shooter, 14-year-old Colt Gray, a student at the school, surrendered to oļ¬cers shortly after the incident and is set to be charged with murder as an adult. Another nine victims were rushed to hospitals, including three with gunshot wounds and ļ¬ve suļ¬ering from anxiety-related symptoms. Authorities are unsure if any of the victims were speciļ¬cally targeted. The Winder, Georgia, shooting marks the 45th school shooting so far in 2024. Of these,
32 have occurred on K-12 campuses, while 13 have been reported on university and college grounds. Wednesday's shooting is the deadliest this year and one of 11 school shootings with four or more deaths since 2008. Last year saw a grim record with 82 school shootings in the U.S.āthe highest number since at least 2008. President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were briefed on the incident, with Biden stating, "Jill and I are mourning the deaths of those whose lives were cut short due to more senseless gun violence and thinking of all of the survivors whose lives are forever changed." country are learning how to duck and cover instead of how to read and write. We cannot continue to accept this as normal." At a campaign event in New Hampshire, Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized the urgency of addressing gun violence, saying, "Our hearts are with all the students, the teachers, and their families." She described the shooting as "just a senseless tragedy on top of so many senseless tragedies", and stressed the need to "end this epidemic of gun violence."
