The country has a long history of political instability, corruption, economic inequality, and criminality which have contributed to its current status. Despite being the first independent nation in Latin America and the Caribbean, Haiti has struggled to establish a stable government and infrastructure, leading to widespread poverty, lack of access to basic services, and frequent natural disasters.
