Then & Now How Jamaica has transformed itself from 1962 to 2026 On Aug. 6, 1962, Jamaica stepped onto the world stage as an independent nation. The lowering of the Union Jack and the raising of Jamaica’s black, green and gold flag marked the end of more than three centuries of British colonial rule and the beginning of a new national chapter. Early voting underway ahead of Florida’s 2026 primary election Early voting is underway in parts of South Florida ahead of Florida’s 2026 primary election, giving voters across Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties the opportunity to cast ballots before Election Day. Florida’s primary election is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 18, with early voting required to begin statewide no later than Aug. 8. Some counties, including several in South Florida, opened voting sites earlier. The deadline to request a vote-by-mail
ballot for the primary election is Thursday, Aug. 6. Florida voters have three options to cast their ballots: voting by mail, voting early at designated locations, or voting at their assigned polling place on Election Day. Florida Secretary of State Cord Byrd reminded voters that early voting provides flexibility for those who may not be able to make it to the polls on Election Day. “Registered Florida voters have the option to cast their ballot at a designated early voting
site before election day,” Byrd said. “All 67 counties offer early voting from August 8–15, but some counties offer additional days.” A statewide list of early voting locations and hours is available through Florida’s Division of Elections.
