Renatha Francis Makes History First Caribbean American Appointed to Florida’s Supreme Court Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Friday appointed Palm Beach County Judge Renatha Francis to the Florida Supreme Court. She is the first Caribbean-American to be appointed to the Court. The Republican governor announced Francis' appointment to the conservative-controlled Supreme Court at a news conference in West Palm Beach. Francis is scheduled to join the court on September 1, replacing retiring Justice Alan Lawson. Primary elections, the prelude to the mid-term general elections on November 8, 2022, are scheduled to be held on August 23, with early voting beginning on August 8 in Palm Beach and Miami-Dade Counties and on August 13 in Broward County. In fact, some voters who have opted to vote by mail-in ballot have already voted. Early voting in all three South Florida counties ends on Sunday, August 21.

VP Harris Announces Million Dollar Support to Jamaica The United States Government will be providing US$2 million in support of the creation of a Cyber Centre of Excellence in Jamaica, which will benefit the wider region. US Vice President Kamala Harris, who is of Jamaican heritage, made the announcement during a call with Prime Minister Andrew Holness on August 8. A statement issued by the White House said the call “is part of the Biden-Harris Administration's ongoing efforts to elevate engagement with Caribbean leaders given our shared interests and common bonds”. president and Prime Minister Holness welcomed progress made on three short-term joint US-Caribbean committees that President Biden and the vice president launched in June to produce concrete, near-term solutions to

urgently address food security, energy security, and finance challenges confronting the region. Vice President Harris met with Prime Minister Holness on March 30, where they discussed a range of issues, including security, COVID recovery, and economic growth. Following that meeting, Vice President Harris announced that the United States will invest $20 million to “assist in the strengthening and the expansion of Jamaica's commerce in a way that we fully intend will have an impact in strengthening the economy of Jamaica and drive economic growth.” An additional $10 million will be provided

to boost human capital and reduce the level of crime among at-risk youth. On April 29, the vice president convened Caribbean leaders virtually and on June 9, President Biden and Vice President Harris met with Caribbean leaders at the Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles. In addition, during the call, and throughout these engagements, the vice president made clear that the US, as a neighbor in the Western Hemisphere, values its partnerships with Caribbean nations and it is committed to addressing the region's most pressing issues together.
