THE STORY OF SHOCKS AND SAVES®
In 2022, Pulse3 began a new legacy through a generous gift to the Covenant HealthCare College of Medicine at Central Michigan University. Now, through the Pulse3 Endowment for Cardiovascular Health at CMU, we continue this important work with our community partners.
Since last year’s game, Pulse3 has placed additional AED’s in the region, funded local cardiovascular research programs, and supported over a dozen schools in achieving MI HEARTSafe School recognition.
On November 21, 2005 Detroit Red Wings player Jiri Fischer suffered sudden cardiac arrest on the ice during a televised game. He was successfully resuscitated by prompt CPR and AED usage by the Red Wings medical staff. Turning tragedy into triumph, Fischer partnered with Dr. Peter Fattal and the Pulse3 Foundation to create a charity hockey game that would raise funds for AED placement and CPR training in the region. Since then, over 400 AED’s have been placed in locations throughout MidMichigan with thousands receiving CPR training. These efforts have resulted in over 20 lives saved and have promoted the general awareness of cardiovascular health and preparedness.

He was an imposing figure on defense as he patrolled the blue line for Detroit from 1999-2006. Named Red Wings Rookie of the Year in 2000, he skated to a Stanley Cup Championship with the Wings in 2002, before sudden cardiac arrest sidelined his playing career. A co-founder of the Shocks and Saves Charity hockey game, Jiri is committed to improving health through increased public awareness of cardiovascular disease. We thank him for the contributions he has made over the last 18 years to the Great Lakes Bay Region!
JOEY KOCUR #26
DETROIT RED WINGS
A tenacious NHL enforcer best known for his toughness and team-first mentality, Joey Kocur played a key role on Stanley Cup runs with the Red Wings and Rangers. Drafted by Detroit in 1983, he became one of the league’s most respected fighters while also contributing as a dependable winger. A part of four Stanley Cup–winning teams, he enjoyed success through his grit, loyalty, and leadership on and off the ice.

JUSTIN ABDELKADER #8
DETROIT RED WINGS
A Muskegon native and former Detroit Red Wings NHL winger, Justin was drafted 42nd overall and went on to play 739 NHL games, score 100+ career goals, and compete at the highest levels of professional and international hockey. A physical, high-energy winger, he became a fan favorite for his leadership, and clutch play — including scoring in the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals as a rookie. Over 13 seasons, he notched 106 goals and 146 assists.

A Michigan native and the first American-born captain to raise the Stanley Cup, Hatcher built his career on powerhouse defense and unmatched leadership. With more than 1,000 NHL games across Dallas, Detroit, and Philadelphia — plus two appearances with Team USA at the Olympics — he’s a true icon of the sport.

DETROIT RED WINGS
After playing his junior hockey with the OHL’s Owen Sound Attack, he was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers before being moved to Detroit in 1995. A cornerstone of the iconic Grind Line, a relentless competitor who frustrated opposing teams with his solid checking and aggressive play. Over 1,000 NHL games, four championship runs, and international gold with Team Canada, he’s proven time and time again what it means to compete at the highest level — and now he’s bringing that same championship mindset back to the ice for an even greater purpose.

PITTSBURGH PENGUINS
Michigan native Chris Tamer spent 11 seasons in the NHL with Pittsburgh, New York, and Atlanta, bringing leadership, grit, and veteran skill to every shift. A 1990 fourth-round draft pick (68th overall) by the Pittsburgh Penguins, Tamer first honed his skills at the University of Michigan, where he built a reputation as a tough, reliable blue-liner before turning pro.

MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY
Nill played for Michigan State University from 2008-2012. As junior he was awarded the prestigious Mike and Marian Ilitch Humanitarian Award from the CCHA. He opened his junior season with a point in three straight games and recorded a career-best three blocked shots when going against Western Michigan, later on Nill was drafted to the St. Louis Blues.

Now, the CMU College of Medicine is continuing this effort through the Pulse3 Endowment at CMU. So far, over twenty lives have been saved by your support of this event.
