Genesis 1–2; Psalm 8; 19:1-7; 24:1-2; 33:6-22
The Lord God made everything.
He made the sun, the moon and the stars. He made the whole world and everything in it.
God made the world beautiful. He made deserts and grasslands and forests. He made trees and leaves and flowers, fruit and vegetables, seeds and nuts.
The Lord God also made insects and ants and spiders. He made fish and other animals in the sea and in the rivers. He made birds that
fly about and others that don’t. God made all the animals. Some live in the desert, others in forests, some on mountains and some on plains. Some live in holes in the ground!
Then God looked at the lovely earth and said, “Now We must make people. They must look after everything that is on earth. And they can be my friends!”
And the Lord God made people. God also made you!
Lord, thank you for trees and flowers and butterflies. Thank you for rain and sunshine, cold days and hot days. Thank you for making me! Amen.
Genesis 6–9
The Lord God told Noah, “Build a big ark. I am going to send so much rain that everything will be under water.”
Noah started building the ark.
The people laughed, but Noah went on obeying the Lord.
When the ark was finished, God sent the animals. Two by two they went into the ark with Noah and his family. God closed the door behind them.
It started to rain. Soon the ark was floating. It rained for a long time, but everyone in the ark was safe.
At last it stopped raining. God sent a strong wind, and the water began to go down. When everything was dry, Noah, his family and all the animals went out.
Noah thanked the Lord God for keeping them safe.
And God put a rainbow in the sky. The rainbow shows us that He keeps his promises.
Dear Lord, thank you for rainbows. When I see one, I remember that You keep your promises. Thank you for keeping me safe. Amen.
Genesis 18:1-15; 21:1-8
Abraham and his wife, Sarah, did not have children.
“I really, really want to have a little baby,” Sarah cried.
“God promised we would have a big family,” Abraham reminded her.
“But we have been waiting for such a long time,” Sarah sighed.
“We have to trust God,” Abraham said.
Then, one hot day three men came to visit Abraham. Abraham welcomed them. He gave them food to eat and milk to drink.
Abraham did not know that these men were angels.
One of them said, “Sarah is going to have a baby.”
Sarah heard him and laughed. Could it really happen at last?
Yes, it could! God always does what He promises.
A year later Abraham and Sarah had little baby boy. Sarah was so happy. She wanted to laugh all day long! So, she called her baby Isaac. This name means “laughing”.
Dear Lord, You always keep your promises. Thank you for all the good things You give me. Help me to trust You always. Amen.
Exodus 2:1-10
The Israelites were living in Egypt. Moses and his family were among them. Moses was a tiny baby. His mother loved him very much.
The Egyptian king was cruel. He wanted to kill all the Israelite baby boys.
Moses’ mother made a reed basket and put her baby inside. She hid the basket among the reeds in the river. His big sister, Miriam, kept watch.
The king’s daughter came to the river to take a bath. She saw the basket and the little baby inside. She picked him up and cuddled him.
Miriam said, “I can find someone to take care of the baby!”
The princess said, “Go quickly, little girl!”
Miriam ran to fetch her mother.
The princess asked, “Will you look after the baby and give him milk until he is old enough to live with me?”
Moses’ mother said, “Oh, yes!”
She was very happy to take her baby home. God had made sure that Moses was safe!
Lord, thank you for everything You give me. You take care of me and keep me safe. Amen.
The Israelites were ready to go into the land that the Lord had promised them.
But first they had to destroy the city Jericho.
Jericho had high, thick walls. How were they going to get into the city?
God told them what to do.
“Get ready. Walk quietly around the city and then go home. Do this for six days.”
The Israelites did what God asked. The people of Jericho watched. What was going on?
Then God said, “Tomorrow, on the seventh day, you must walk around the city seven times. Then the priests must blow on their trumpets and you must all shout as loudly as you can.”
The Israelites obeyed. When they made a loud noise, the walls tumbled down!
They could go into the city and fight against the people of Jericho. The Lord helped them to win their first battle in their new land.
Lord, You can do anything. You also help me when I must do difficult things. You are always with me. Amen.
Ruth 1–4
Naomi had a sad life. Her husband and her two sons died. Then Naomi decided to go back to her childhood home.
Orpah, the wife of one of Naomi’s sons, stayed behind with her own family.
The other son’s wife, Ruth, said to Naomi, “I love you and I love your Lord. I want to go with you.”
Naomi’s family were glad to see her, but Naomi and Ruth were poor.
To find food, Ruth went to the fields and picked up the bits of grain the workers left behind.
Boaz was the owner of the fields. He saw how hard Ruth worked to take care of Naomi. He told his workers to leave extra grain for Ruth to pick up. Later he married her, and so she had a new family. When Ruth had a baby boy, Naomi was not sad any more. She had a little grandson to love!
Dear Lord, You took care of Naomi and Ruth when they were sad and lonely. I know I can tell You when I am sad and lonely. You take care of me. Amen.
1 Samuel 1–3
Samuel lived with Eli, the priest. Eli was teaching him about the Lord God.
One night Samuel woke up. Someone was calling his name! He ran to Eli and said, “Here I am!”
Eli said, “I did not call you. Go back to bed.”
In his bed Samuel again heard someone calling him. He went to Eli.
He said, “I am sure I heard you.”
Eli said, “You must be dreaming. I did not call you.”
Samuel went back to bed, but again he heard someone calling him. He went back to Eli once again.
This time Eli knew Samuel was not dreaming.
He told Samuel, “The Lord God is calling you. When you hear his voice, you must say: I am listening, Lord.”
From that day the Lord God often spoke to Samuel and he always listened. When he grew up, Samuel was a prophet and a leader.
Dear Lord, You speak to me in the Bible and in my thoughts. Help me to listen to your voice. Amen.
1 Samuel 17
The Israelites and the Philistines were fighting.
Goliath was a Philistine soldier. He was tall as a house, big and strong. He had many weapons.
Goliath wanted to fight against an Israelite soldier, but they were all too scared.
David was a shepherd boy.
“I shall fight against Goliath,” he said.
“You are too young!” his brothers replied.
King Saul added, “You are not even a soldier!”
But David said, “The Lord God helped me when a bear or a lion attacked the sheep. He will help me today!”
David walked up to the giant, and Goliath laughed, “You can’t fight against me!”
Quietly, David put a stone in his sling and threw the stone at the giant. It hit him on his forehead, and he fell down. The Lord God had helped David.
Lord, You are strong and mighty. You are always ready to help me. I love You, Lord, and I know You help me all the time. Amen.
1 Samuel 25
Nabal was a rich man with many sheep. David and his men lived nearby. They helped the shepherds to protect Nabal’s sheep.
While they were shearing sheep, Nabal held a feast. David sent his men to remind Nabal how they had helped him and to ask if they could join the feast.
Nabal was mean and grumpy. He chased David’s men away. David was very angry when he got the news.
Abigail was Nabal’s wife. She was beautiful and kind. When she saw Nabal being mean, she quickly loaded bread, roast meat and other food on donkeys and hurried after David’s men.
David and his men were ready to fight against Nabal and his men when Abigail arrived with the food. David saw that she was kindhearted and wanted to help his men.
They had a feast right there!
Abigail prevented a fight by being kind-hearted.
Dear Lord, You are good and kind. Help me to be good and kind too. Help me to share what I have. Amen.
Psalm 23; 139; Acts 13:22
David had seven brothers. He was the youngest of them all. His job was to look after the sheep.
David knew that the Lord loved him. The Lord loved him even before he was born and when he was a tiny baby. The Lord also helped him when a lion or a bear tried to attack his sheep.
David became a brave soldier. Later he was a famous king. His army defeated all the Israelites’ enemies.
When David forgot to obey the Lord, he asked the Lord to forgive him.
David loved the Lord and he wrote many songs for the Lord. He sang, “The Lord is my shepherd. He gives me everything I need. He keeps me safe.”
The Lord God looked after David just as David used to look after his sheep. David kept them safe and took them to places with green grass and sweet water.
Lord God, David loved You and You loved David very much. Thank you for loving me. I also love You. You are always with me. Amen.
Kings 5:1-14
Naaman was an important general. His army fought against the Israelites. When they went back home, they took a little Israelite girl with them. She had to work for Naaman’s wife. Then Naaman got a terrible illness.
The little girl was lonely. She missed her family. But when she saw that Naaman’s wife was sad, she wanted to help. She told her about a man of God called Elisha who could cure Naaman.
Naaman decided to go to Israel to find Elisha.
When he stopped at Elisha’s door, the man of God sent Naaman a message.
“Wash yourself seven times in the Jordan River. God will heal you.”
At first Naaman did not want to wash himself in the river, but in the end he did. And when he came out of the river for the seventh time, he was cured. From that day Naaman served the Lord God.
Dear Lord, You are great and wonderful. Sometimes You use little children to help other people. I also want to help people. Help me to notice when people need help. Amen.
2 Kings 6:8-23
The king of Aram sent his soldiers to Israel. They surrounded the city where Elisha, the man of God, lived. When Elisha’s servant saw the soldiers and their chariots all around the city, he was scared. But Elisha said, “Don’t be afraid. We have even more soldiers on our side!”
Then the Lord God opened the servant’s eyes, and he saw horses and chariots of fire all around them.
Elisha prayed and God made all the enemy soldiers blind.
Then Elisha told them, “You are at the wrong city. I shall take you to the right place.”
Elisha led the soldiers to the city of the king of Israel. There God opened their eyes again. They were surrounded by the king’s men!
“Shall I kill them?” the king asked.
“Oh no,” Elisha said. “Be kind. Give them food and send them home!”
That is what the king did. Then there was no more fighting between the two countries.
time
Dear Lord, thank you for being with me when I am scared. You said that being kind is better than fighting. Help me to be kind. Amen.
2 Kings 22:1-20; Psalm 119:105
Jerusalem was not a happy place. The people were mean and quarrelled all the time. Their kings did not obey the Lord God.
Then Josiah became king. He was only eight years old, but he loved the Lord and he wanted to obey Him.
First, Josiah sent people to repair the temple.
One of the workers found a very old book in the temple. It was a book with the laws of God.
The high priest read the book to the king. It made the king very sad. He wanted the people to obey the Lord.
Then king Josiah got all the people together at the temple and the high priest read the words of the book to them. The people were sad when they heard how they had disobeyed God’s laws. That day king Josiah promised to obey the Lord, and the people made the same promise.
Dear Lord, thank you for the Bible. Thank you for all the people who teach me about your Word. Help me to obey You with a happy heart. Amen.
Daniel 3; Psalm 91:11
Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego were friends. They loved the Lord and wanted to obey Him.
One day king Nebuchadnezzar called everyone together. The king said, “You must worship and bow down before the statue I had made!”
The three friends refused. They worshipped the Lord God and nobody else.
The king was angry. He told his men, “Make the fire in the furnace seven times hotter than usual. Then throw these men into it.”
The fire was so hot that men who took the friends to the fire were burnt to death.
Then the king saw something very strange.
“Look!” he shouted. “The men are not burning. And there is an angel with them!”
When the three friends came out of the furnace they were perfectly fine. The flames did not burn them. They did not even smell of smoke. Everyone knew only God could save in this way.
Dear Lord, You sent an angel to protect the friends in the fire. Thank you that your angels also watch over me. Help me to love You with all my heart. Amen.
Luke 2:1-20
Mary was tired. She and Joseph had travelled all day long. And now there was nowhere for them to stay!
A kind man said, “Come, stay in my stable. It is warm and dry there.”
That night Mary’s Baby was born, right there in the stable, in Bethlehem.
Mary wrapped her tiny Baby in cloths and put Him on soft straw in the manger.
There were shepherds in the fields, looking after their sheep. Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared in a bright light.
The angel said, “Don’t be scared! I have good news. Jesus our Saviour was born tonight. You will find Him in a stable.”
Then a large group of angels appeared in the sky, saying, “Let us praise God! He gives peace on earth for everyone who loves Him.”
The shepherds hurried to Bethlehem to find the Baby in the stable.
They were so excited that they told everyone about that wonderful night.
Lord Jesus, at Christmas we remember the night when You were born. Thank you for coming to live among us. Help me to remember that You did it just for us. Amen.
Far away from Bethlehem there were wise men who studied the stars at night. One night they saw a bright new star rising in the sky and they knew a new king was born. They decided to visit Him.
They tried to find the new king in Jerusalem, but nobody knew anything about Him. Then the priests and wise teachers said, “Long ago one of God’s men said He would be born in Bethlehem.”
The wise men went to Bethlehem. On the way they saw the star again. It moved in front of them and stopped above the house where Jesus was.
And there the wise men found Jesus and his mother and father. They knelt in front of Him because they knew He was not an ordinary baby. He was going to be the greatest king of all time. They also gave Him gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh.
Dear Lord, You are the King of the world. And You love me. Please be with my family and my friends too. Amen.
Jesus lived in Nazareth with his family.
Luke 2:41-52
Every year the family went to the temple in Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover feast. When Jesus was twelve years old, He went with his parents.
Everybody travelled together. There were many people on the roads. And there were even more people in Jerusalem.
After the feast everyone went home again. When they were already on their way for a day, Mary and Joseph started looking for Jesus, but they could not find Him anywhere. Nobody had seen Him!
“He must have stayed behind!” Mary said.
“Let us go back,” Joseph replied.
They could not find Jesus anywhere in Jerusalem. After three days they went to the temple, and there they found Jesus at last!
Jesus was not lost. He was talking to the priests about God. They were amazed at the things He knew.
Joseph and Mary were very, very happy to find their Son.
Lord Jesus, help me to learn more about You and grow closer to You, just like You got to know and love God better when You were a young child. Amen.
John 2:1-12
One day there was a wedding in Cana. Most of the people in the village were there. Jesus’ mother, Mary, came from Nazareth. Jesus and his friends were there too. Everyone was cheerful, talking and laughing and enjoying the wedding, the food and the wine.
Then the wine ran out.
Mary asked Jesus to help. Jesus told the servants, “I see six very large jars by the door. Fill them with water.”
The servants did as they were told. Soon the containers were full of water.
Then Jesus said, “Now pour some out in a cup and give it to the bridegroom’s friend.”
This friend was organising the wedding. The servants took the cup of water to the man. He tasted it and discovered that it was very good wine!
Jesus had changed the water into wine. It was his first miracle.
Dear Lord, You can do anything. You can change water into wine. And You can make sad people happy. You are great and wonderful! Amen.
John 6:1-15
A crowd of people was listening to Jesus. They did not want to go home, but it was late and they were tired and hungry.
Jesus spoke to his friend Philip. “We have to find food for everyone,” He said.
Philip replied, “I don’t know where we can find food for so many people! Besides, we don’t have enough money!”
Another friend, Andrew, came to Jesus. “Here is a little boy who wants to share his meal,” he said. “He has five small loaves of bread and two small fish, but that is only enough for one boy!”
Jesus said, “Let everyone sit down.”
Jesus took the bread and fish and thanked the Lord God for the food. Then He handed it out to the people.
And a miracle happened! The food just kept on getting more! There was enough food for everyone in the large crowd.
When everyone had enough to eat, Jesus’ friends filled 12 baskets with leftover food.
Lord Jesus, You always know what I need. You know when I am tired and hungry. And You can do wonderful things! Amen.
Luke 15:1-7; John 10:1-21; Isaiah 43:1; 49:16
Long ago, shepherds always stayed with their sheep. They even gave them names. And the sheep came when the shepherds called their names.
Every morning the shepherd called his sheep. He took them to green grass and to sweet water. He kept them safe.
One of the stories Jesus told was about a shepherd:
There was a shepherd who had many sheep. One of them wandered away, but the shepherd soon saw that his sheep was missing.
He called the sheep, but it did not come to him.
So the shepherd went to look for his lost sheep. He searched everywhere until he found the sheep.
The shepherd was so glad that he picked it up and carried it on his shoulders back to the other sheep.
That night he called his friends.
“My sheep was lost, but I found him. Let us have a party to celebrate!” he said.
Jesus was talking about Himself: He is like this shepherd. He loves us and will do anything to find us if we get lost or wander far from Him.
Lord Jesus, You know my name and You take care of me. Please stay with me wherever I go. And please take care of my family too. Amen.
Mark 10:13-16
Jesus was resting beside the road. Some people saw Him there and said, “Let’s take our children to Jesus. We’ll ask Him to bless our children. Maybe He can tell them a story!”
The mothers and fathers took their children to Jesus.
When Jesus’ friends saw the children playing and shouting and laughing together, they told the parents, “Take your children away! They are too noisy. Jesus is tired. He must rest!”
Jesus heard them.
He said, “Don’t send the children away! You must always let the little children come to Me. God loves them very much.”
The children saw that Jesus loved them. They came right up to Him. He put his hands on their heads and blessed them. And they played around Him.
Jesus made them happy.
time
Lord Jesus, I know that You love me very much. Thank you for the people who tell me that You love me. Help me to be kind to other people and to help them. Amen.
Luke 19:1-10
Zacchaeus was rich, but he did not have friends. No one liked him because he cheated and stole money from other people.
Zacchaeus was also a very short man. He could never see what was going on. He could only see the people right in front of him.
One day he heard that Jesus was passing that way and Zacchaeus wanted to see Him.
I wish I was tall! he thought.
Then Zacchaeus made a plan. He climbed into a tree next to the road. Now he could see Jesus coming from far away.
Zacchaeus kept very quiet. Nobody must see him!
But Jesus knew where he was. He stopped under the tree, looked up and said, “Zacchaeus, I want to visit you today. Let us go to your house!”
Zacchaeus was excited and happy. They had a big party at his house.
He said, “Lord, I shall stop stealing from other people. I shall also give back what I stole.”
On that day Zacchaeus and Jesus became friends.
Lord, You see me even though I am small. You love me even though I am very young. Help me to love You back. Amen.
Mark 2:1-12
There was a man who could not walk. He had four very good friends. They carried him to the house where Jesus was to ask Him to heal their friend.
But then they could not get in. There were too many people in the house. Everyone wanted to see Jesus and listen to Him.
So the friends carried the paralysed man up to the flat roof of the house. There they made a big hole in the roof. With ropes they lowered their friend on his mat so that he was right in front of Jesus.
Everyone made room for the man.
Jesus saw that the friends trusted Him and believed He could help their friend.
“Get up!” He told the man. “Take your mat and go home.”
And that is just what he did!
The people in the house said, “We have never seen anything like this before!”
Lord, You love me very much. Thank you for my friends. Help me to be a friend who helps other people. Amen.
John 11:1-44; 12:1-8
In a little town called Bethany there were two sisters, Martha and Mary. They were very, very happy. Their brother Lazarus had died, but Jesus raised him and there he was, with them in their house. He was alive again!
The two sisters planned a lovely meal for Jesus.
Martha loved to cook, and she made the food. She prepared Jesus’ favourite foods. That is how Martha showed Jesus that she loved Him.
Mary also wanted to give Jesus a special gift.
When everyone was at the table, she brought her gift. It was a jar with very expensive perfume. Mary poured it over Jesus’ feet and wiped his feet with her long hair. The perfume’s sweet smell filled the whole house.
Some people did not think the perfume was a good gift. But Jesus was pleased. He said, “Nobody will ever forget this lovely gift. And they will also remember how much Mary loved me.”
Dear Lord, thank you for loving me. Help me to love You too. Show me how I can help other people. That is how I can show You how much I love You. Amen.
Peter is too scared to be brave Luke 22:31-34, 54-62
Jesus told his friends that soldiers were going to arrest Him. Peter said, “I will go with You!”
Jesus said, “Peter, you are going to be so scared that you will pretend you do not know Me!”
Later that night soldiers took Jesus away. Most of Jesus’ friends ran away, but Peter followed the soldiers. They took Jesus to the high priest’s house. Peter stayed outside with people standing around a fire.
A servant girl said, “You are one of Jesus’ friends!”
Peter was scared and he replied, “No, I am not!”
Then another one said, “I saw you! You are Jesus’ friend.”
“I am not!” Peter replied.
Later another person said, “I am sure you were with Jesus!”
Peter replied, “Listen! I don’t know Him!”
Just then a cock crowed and Peter remembered Jesus’ words. Jesus was right. Peter was too scared to tell people he was Jesus’ friend. He went outside, crying. He was ashamed about what he had done.
Prayer time
Dear Lord, I am sorry that I sometimes treat other people badly. Thank you for loving me anyway and for forgiving me. Amen.
Friday Matthew 27; Luke 23
Jesus’ enemies decided that Jesus had to die. They beat Him and then they hung Him on a huge cross.
Jesus prayed for his enemies. He said, “Father, please forgive them for doing this to Me.”
In the middle of the day it suddenly became dark. It stayed dark for three hours.
Then Jesus prayed again. He said, “Father, I did the work that You sent Me to do. Now I am ready to come back to You.” And He died.
Suddenly there was an earthquake. Everything started shaking and rocks split.
One of the soldiers who had helped to put Jesus on the cross was so afraid that he cried, “Jesus really was the Son of God!”
Jesus’ friends were sad when they went home. They thought that they would never see Him again. But we call that day Good Friday. On that day Jesus showed us how much God loves us. Jesus died on the cross so that the bad things that we do can be forgiven.
Dear Lord, on Good Friday I remember how much You love the whole world. And I remember that You want me to love You too. Amen.
John 20:1-25
Early on Sunday morning Mary Magdalene went to the tomb where Jesus was buried. There she had a surprise! The stone in front of the tomb had been rolled away and she could see inside. She ran to the others and said, “Jesus is not in the tomb! Where can He be?”
Peter and John ran to the tomb. When they got there, they also saw that the tomb was empty. They did not understand what had happened and they went home again. Where was Jesus?
Mary Magdalene stayed behind when the others left. And then she saw Jesus standing there. She was so happy to see Him. She went to the others and said, “I have seen the Lord!”
That evening Jesus also appeared to his other friends. They were so happy and excited. He showed them his hands and feet and told them, “Tell the whole world that God loves them!”
Lord Jesus, thank you for rising from the grave. You are alive! You are always with me, even though I cannot see You. Amen.
Acts 1:6–2:41
One day Jesus told his friends, “I am going to my Father in heaven. And He will send the Holy Spirit to you. He will always be with you and help you.”
Then a cloud took Jesus up into the sky. His friends looked up until Jesus was only a tiny dot. Suddenly two angels appeared. They said, “Don’t worry! Jesus will come back. But now you must go to your house and pray and wait for the Holy Spirit.”
On the day of the Pentecost Jesus’ friends were all gathered in a house. Suddenly there was a sound like a very strong wind. It filled the whole house. The people saw something like a fire, and then a piece of the fire came down to each one of the people in the house.
It was the Holy Spirit. From that day the Spirit never left them. He made them brave.
The Holy Spirit is with everyone who loves Jesus.
Dear Lord, thank you for the Holy Spirit. He is always with me. The Spirit helps me to remember You. He helps me to be brave. Amen.
Acts 3:1-10
Peter and John always went to the temple in the afternoon. One day they met a man at the temple gate. He could not walk. Every day his friends would take him to the temple to beg.
The man asked Peter and John for some money.
Peter said, “Look at us!”
The man hoped he was going to get a coin or two.
Peter said, “We do not have money. But we can give you something else. In the Name of Jesus, stand up and walk!”
Peter took hold of the man’s hand and lifted him up. The man’s legs grew strong. He could walk! He was so happy that he followed Peter and John into the temple, jumping for joy and praising God.
When the people saw the man jumping about, they were amazed at the wonderful thing that God had done.
Lord Jesus, I also want to praise You. Thank you for everything that You do for me. You are always with me and You help me with everything. Amen.
Acts 16:16-34
Paul and Silas were followers of Jesus. They travelled far and wide to tell people about Him.
In a city called Philippi, there were people who did not like Paul’s message. Paul and Silas were locked up in a dark prison cell. Their feet were fastened in a wooden block.
Can you guess what they did? They prayed and sang songs to God. The other prisoners listened. They were amazed that the men could praise God while they were in prison.
At midnight there was an earthquake. The walls shook and the doors opened by themselves. The chains fell off the prisoners’ legs.
The jailer was shocked, but Paul said, “Don’t worry! We are all here! Nobody ran away!”
When the jailer saw that they were telling the truth, he washed Paul’s and Silas’ wounds and took them to his own home. His whole family became Christians.
Dear Lord, I love singing songs to You! Thank you for all the good things You do for me. Thank you for always being with me. Amen.
