God’s Love in a Nutshell

Hilary Robinson Mandy Stanley

It was almost bedtime. Tiny was thinking about love, and what it meant.

Tiny looked worried.

‘Why are you worried?’ asked Tall, tenderly.

‘Can I keep God’s love in my nutshell?’ Tiny asked.

‘Why would you want to do that?’ asked Tall.

‘So I can keep it with me always,’ replied Tiny.

‘I think God’s love is too big to fit in your nutshell,’ said Tall.
Tiny thought for a moment.
‘Well, can I keep his love in my . . .
‘I think God’s love is too deep for your backpack,’ said Tall.

. . . backpack?

Tiny thought again.

‘What about keeping God’s love in my . . .
. . . wheelbarrow?
‘I think God’s love is too tender for your wheelbarrow,’ said Tall.

Tiny

looked sad.
‘Why are you sad?’ asked Tall.
‘Well, I want to keep God’s love with me, always, and if I can’t put his love in my nutshell, or my backpack, or my wheelbarrow . . .
I can’t keep it with me, can I?’
‘Yes you can,’ said Tall.
‘Put your hand on your heart. Can you feel it beating?’
‘Yes,’ nodded Tiny.
‘Well that’s because,’ said Tall, ‘our hearts beat with God’s love.
This means . . .
. . . that his love is with us always, when we are together

or apart,

on sunny days, rainy days,

and cold days. His love is with us always
whether we are worried or frightened, happy or sad,

when we are awake

. . . and even when we sleep.’

Tiny was no longer worried and slept peacefully.

Tiny wants to carry God's love around always, but what if it's too big for a nutshell, and too deep for a wheelbarrow?

A timeless story for young children about the wonder of God’s love.
