DIRECTOR’S NOTE

Romeo and Juliet is arguably one of the most recognizable titles in all of literature. It has been produced, adapted, and revised into every form imaginable. The original legend of the ill-fated lovers predates Shakespeare’s account by at least 160 years: three successive Italian authors (Salernitano, da Porta, and Bandello) wrote earlier versions, and the characters and plot recognizably evolve in each subsequent iteration. From the Italians, the story jumped to the French and then, eventually, to an English poetic translation by Arthur Brooke in 1562, from which Shakespeare derived his work somewhere before 1597.

Shakespeare’s play has arguably been romanticized throughout the centuries; however, the text reveals a deeply violent, bawdy, and sensual tale that is driven by passion, perceived dishonor, and ill-informed decisions. There are few characters that are reasonable, wise, or cautious, and they too make decisions that push the dual protagonists towards their fateful end. Combine the long-simmering rancor between the houses, quick tempers, and adolescent impulses, and the play is a recipe for selfdestruction.

When approaching a show as historied as Romeo and Juliet, the production team’s problem is: “How do we make this show relevant and interesting to our audiences today?” Our answer was found within the text. An analysis of the play reveals repetitions of related words: death, grief, fate, fortune and misfortune, time, clock, stars, doom and doomsday. As a result, our concept became the Doomsday Clock, and we moved the action of the play to 1948.

The Doomsday Clock was created in 1947 and designed by Martyl Langsdorf, an artist, for the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists (of which her husband was a member). The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists was formed in 1945 by individuals who had worked on the Manhattan Project during World War II and were worried about the annihilation of the human race. Using the Doomsday Clock as a metaphor, the organization continues to monitor humanity’s fragility by assessing multiple factors that could end life on earth. Our production team felt that illustrating Romeo and Juliet’s story using the Doomsday Clock analogy would be a powerful way to frame the narrative; our goal is to emphasize the fateful moments that lead to Romeo and Juliet’s tragic end.

The designers, choreographers, production team, and actors have all embraced this approach with dogged dedication and steadfast focus with the work beginning as far back as April for the designers. The process has been a joy, even with the dark plot and setbacks that are normal for a production of this size; the company has shown such commitment and kindness that rehearsals were filled with contagious laughter and burgeoning lifelong friendships. They are truly living the dream together. We hope that our work brings the text to life in a way that both surprises and delights you our audience and partner in this journey. Thank you for coming and supporting Belmont University’s Department of Theatre and Dance. Enjoy the show.
