About the Recipient

Legendary songwriter Craig Wiseman once said, “There are a lot of imitators in this town, but very few creators.”
The first time I heard Jordan Reynolds sing was at the Listening Room, back when it was on 2nd Avenue. I remember seeing in him the part of me that was drawn to writing songs for a living. His voice and his writing has always brought heart to a format that is built on truth telling and authenticity. The foundation of this craft is having something to say, then finding a way to express that to the world.
Early on, I thought writing songs meant cracking the algorithm and figuring out the secret that all the greats had surely unlocked. As I get older in this career and in life, I realize that the secret is just writing what you love. And that’s how Jordan writes songs.
His intentionality in the way he plays guitar, or sings a vocal, or digs for a signature melody that sets a song apart, are all the pieces that make a great artist. And at the end of the day, all of us are trying our best to make art that lets us show the world who we are, and hopefully lets listeners feel more connected to something bigger.
Reynolds is an amazing dad, husband and friend. I’ve learned along the way these character traits are not the extras. They are the foundation of becoming a great writer. His world revolves around the people he loves. That’s why his music has heart and intention.
I’ve gotten to see Reynolds get his first #1 song with “Tequila” by Dan and Shay, along with 6 of their following hits, and his most recent country #1 “3, 2, 1” by Tucker Wetmore. A Grammy award sits inconspicuously on a side table in his East Nashville studio. He has written songs for artists ranging from Morgan Wallen to Carly Pearce, Thomas Rhett to Kelsea Ballerini, Camila Cabello and many others who all have been able to hear what I hear when they listen to a song Reynolds wrote. Something real. Something worth listening to. And something that people can connect with. The accomplishments are not the goal. They are the byproduct of writing amazing songs. In a world full of imitators, Reynolds is a creator.
