MCAFEE CONCERT HALL

Belmont University School of Music presents

“OneWorld...InHarmony”

Jeffery L. Ames, conductor

“One World…In Harmony” invites both reflection and resolve, acknowledging the tension between an aspirational ideal and a fractured reality. The deliberate pause in the title underscores a truth we cannot ignore: our world is not presently in harmony, but marked by conflict, loss, and profound human suffering. Yet, within that dissonance, music becomes a vessel for hope and connection.

Through selections such as “I Can Tell the World,” “Adinu,” “Hatikva,” and “Turn the World Around,” this program traces a journey from lament to resilience, from remembrance to renewal. Each piece carries its own cultural and spiritual weight, offering voices that rise above division and call us toward shared humanity.

In a time when devastation too often defines the global landscape, this concert does not deny the darkness it responds to it, asserting that harmony is not merely a condition to be found, but a commitment to be forged together.

Program notes by Dr. Jeffery Ames, School of Music Faculty

I Can Tell the World Traditional Spiritual arr. Moses Hogan

Text

I can tell the world, yes, about this, I can tell the nations, yes, that I’m blessed. Tell ‘em what my Lord has done, Oh yes, tell ‘em the conqueror has come, And He brought joy, joy, joy to my soul.

My Lord done just what He said. He healed the sick and He raised the dead. He lifted me when I was down. He placed my feet on solid ground.

I can tell the world, yes, about this, I can tell the nations, yes, that I’m blessed.

Tell ‘em what my Lord has done, Oh yes, tell ‘em the conqueror has come, And He brought joy, that mornin’, when He saved me. Joy, that mornin’, when He blessed me.

Joy, I’ll tell it!

How He brought this joy to my soul.

Libiamo (Brindisi)

Giuseppe Verdi from La Traviata (1813-1901)

Javier Castro, Alfredo Katherine Light, Violetta Sami Copeland**, piano

Text & Translations

Alfredo

Libiamo, libiamo ne' lieti calici che la bellezza infiora; Let's drink, let's drink from the joyous chalices that beauty decorates with flowers; e la fuggevol, fuggevol ora s'inebrii a voluttà. And may the fleeting moment be elated with voluptuousness Libiam ne' dolci fremiti, che suscita l'amore, Let's drink from the sweet thrills that love arouses, poiché quell'occhio al core onnipotente va. because that eye aims straight to the almighty heart. Libiamo, amore, amor fra i calici più caldi baci avrà. Let's drink, my love: the love among chalices will have warmer kisses.

Coro

Ah, libiam, amor fra' calici più caldi baci avrà. Let's drink, my love: the love among chalices will have warmer kisses.

Violetta

Tra voi, tra voi saprò dividere il tempo mio giocondo; With you, with you I'll be able to share my cheerful times; tutto è follia, follia nel mondo ciò che non è piacer. Everything is foolish in the world which is not pleasure. Godiam, fugace e rapido, è il gaudio dell'amore; Let's enjoy ourselves, for fleeting and quick the delight of love is; è un fior che nasce e muore, ne più si può goder. it's a flower that blooms and dies and can no longer be enjoyed. Godiam, c'invita, c'invita un fervido accento lusinghier. Let's enjoy ourselves, fervent flattering voice invites us.

Coro

Ah, godiamo, la tazza, la tazza e il cantico, La notte abbella e il riso; Ah, let's enjoy the cup, the cup and the chants, the embellished nights and the laughter; in questo, in questo paradiso ne scopra il nuovo dì. let the new day find us in this paradise.

Violetta

La vita è nel tripudio. Life means celebration.

Alfredo

Quando non s'ami ancora. If one hasn't known love.

Violetta

Nol dite a chi l'ignora. Don't tell someone who doesn't know.

Adinu

Alfredo È il mio destin così. But this is my fate.

Tutti

Ah, godiamo, la tazza, la tazza e il cantico, La notte abbella e il riso; Ah, let's enjoy the cup, the cup and the chants, the embellished night and the laughter; in questo, in questo paradiso ne scopra il nuovo dì. let the new day find us in this paradise.
