MARIE SELBY BOTANICAL GARDENS’ HISTORIC SPANISH POINT CAMPUS
The past meets the future at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens’ Historic Spanish Point campus. Art meets nature here too.
Located in Osprey about seven miles north of Venice, Selby Gardens’ Historic Spanish Point campus is a 30-acre museum and preserve perched on Little Sarasota Bay. The first site in Sarasota County to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it showcases native Florida plants while preserving and interpreting thousands of years of regional history.
Visitors can explore several distinct periods of the past as they roam the picturesque campus. The archaeological record shows that ancient peoples made their home here as far back as 5,000 years. In fact, the very land that forms today’s campus was made by human hands! By recycling shells from feasts and constructing a platform on which to build homes and hold ceremonies, the First
Floridians who lived here gained safety from storm tides and enjoyed the same bay breezes visitors do today. An exhibit titled “A Window to the Past” lets you literally look back in time at a cross-section of the shell mound that was built here beginning 2,500 years ago.
Moving forward, the site celebrates over 150 years of pioneer heritage dating to homesteaders who settled here in 1867. Visitors may tour a carefully restored 1901 pioneer home, the rehabilitated Mary’s Chapel (with original stainedglass windows and bronze bell), and a reconstructed citrus packinghouse that was a center of local commerce.
Next comes the era of Bertha Palmer, a famous Chicago businesswoman and innovator who chose the site as her winter estate in 1910. Palmer preserved the pioneer buildings and connected them to lavish formal gardens and lawns, three of which—the Sunken Garden, Duchene Lawn, and Jungle Walk Garden—can still be enjoyed today.
The property’s bountiful plant life has become an even greater focus since Historic Spanish Point was adopted by Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in 2020 as a companion to its Downtown Sarasota campus. More than half of the species of native plants found in Sarasota County can be admired along the nature trails and boardwalks of the Historic Spanish Point campus. New features since the adoption include the region’s only butterfly house,
The exhibition A Child’s Garden of Verses, on view from November 15, 2025 through August 30, 2026, will celebrate childhood and the imagination of youth through the words and images of the beloved book of poetry for children by the celebrated Scottish writer, Robert Louis Stevenson. The exhibition features photographs of pages from a vintage edition of the book, combining Stevenson’s poetry with illustrations by the notable American artist, Alexander Dobkin. Accompanying the photographs will be simple interactives that draw their inspiration from Stevenson’s poems and enhance the visitor experience. An audio element will enable visitors to hear the poems read by Selby Gardens’ artist-inresidence, Patti Smith.

WELCOME
Dear Friends and Neighbors,
It’s my pleasure to welcome you to the 2026 edition of our Community Guide & Preferred Business Directory, a publication that celebrates the remarkable people, businesses, and organizations that make the Venice area such a wonderful place to live, work, and visit.
Whether you’re a longtime resident or a first-time visitor, I encourage you to get out and explore. Enjoy our world-famous beaches, lively arts and cultural scene, and the wonderful variety of local restaurants. Spend time in our parks, play a round of pickleball or tennis, and take in the natural beauty that makes our area so unique. You’ll find many local favorites in these pages, but makes sure you wander a little too because some of the best experiences come from discovering your own hidden gems.
I’m honored to serve as the 2026 Board Chair of the Venice Area Chamber of Commerce. Just as healthcare nurtures the well-being of individuals, the Chamber supports the health of our local businesses. A strong business community is essential to a strong community overall. By supporting entrepreneurs, fostering growth, and creating opportunities for connection, the Chamber helps ensure that the Venice area remains a place where both people and businesses can thrive.
I have selected Healthy Living, Healthy Community as the theme for the Chamber’s 101st year. This resonates deeply with me, both personally and professionally. Good health is more than the absence of illness; it’s the foundation for a thriving community. It influences how we care for ourselves and our families, how we support one another, and how we build and sustain a strong local economy.
As you enjoy this issue, I encourage you to reflect on the many ways you contribute to the health of the Venice area whether by focusing on your own wellness, supporting a local business, volunteering, or simply lending a helping hand to a neighbor. Together, we’re creating a community where people flourish, businesses prosper, and a healthy future is possible for all.
With gratitude and excitement for all that lies ahead,

Imagine Venice submerged beneath the sea, inhabited by sharks , some larger than any species known today. Millions of years ago, this was indeed the case. As the waters eventually receded, those prehistoric giants perished. Each shark shed between 20,000 and 25,000 teeth over its lifetime, many of which fossilized. Today, our coastline rests atop a fossil layer more than 30 feet deep. Over time, weather and surf gradually bring these relics to the surface, washing them into the shallows and onto the beaches.
Now celebrated as the Shark Tooth Capital of the World, Venice attracts fossil enthusiasts from around the globe in search of the coveted Megalodon, or “Meg”, tooth, a remnant of the awe-inspiring ancient shark. While only a fortunate few uncover such treasures, many leave with lasting memories and shark teeth from a variety of smaller
prehistoric species. This activity not only fuels the excitement of discovery but also contributes significantly to our local economy.
Visitors and residents alike take pride in honing their skills, whether by sifting through the sand with specialized tools or simply strolling along the shore and spotting teeth in plain sight. Venice Beach and Caspersen Beach are among the most popular starting points, though any stretch of sand south of the Venice Jetty may reveal the beginnings of your own shark tooth, hunting adventure.

CITY OF VENICE A CITY CELEBRATES A CENTENNIAL
For the City of Venice, 2026 marks a major milestone. Our incorporated community will celebrate being 100 years young. Over a span of 18 months, the City, the clubs and organizations in our community, and many others will take time to reflect on the past and future of Venice. Celebrate for 18 months you ask? The time span allows for several events, including established ones, to take place without competing with each other. It also aligns nicely with the early establishment of Venice.
In December of 1925, during a special session of the state Legislature, they passed a law incorporating the Town of Venice. The law established the Council, boundaries, and gave the town the power to tax. The annual Holiday Parade at the end of November 2025 proves then to be a great time to kick things off.
By the winter and spring of 1926, the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers (BLE), who were building Venice, declared the town open for business. The promotion and marketing campaign included a large
barbecue at the beach, encouraging people from across the country to invest in Venice by buying homes and starting businesses. In the winter of 2026, the City of Venice and the Venice Area Chamber of Commerce will host a dinner as the Chamber closes out its Centennial and the City starts its own.
July will prove to be the high point in the City’s Centennial activities. That law mentioned previously incorporating the Town of Venice? It went into effect on July 1, 1926. This is the date in 2026 that the city turns 100. And a few days later another place we know is having a birthday. Kudos to you if you can say semiquincentennial 10 times fast. Independence Day marks the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. A good old fashioned hometown parade will launch the day’s festivities. This will be followed by an indoor picnic — it is July, after all.
You would think that the actual incorporation date would wrap things up. But wait! There’s more. We are not known today as the Town of Venice. In May of 1927, the state Legislature changed our name to City of Venice. That seems like a good time to wrap things up. So, cake in honor of all those occasions will be the order of the day in May 2027.
This 18-month window also provides plenty of time to learn about the City’s fascinating history. From the BLE, John Nolen, and the Albees, to the Kentucky Military Institute, Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, and the Venice Army Air Base, the City has been touched by so many

organizations and events throughout its past. And there are so many ways to take it all in.
You can start by visiting the Venice Museum at 351 Nassau St. S. on the Cultural Campus. The museum is part of the City’s Division of Historical Resources. Located inside the historic Triangle Inn building, the museum is open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month in season, October through April, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Here you can learn about the history of Venice through permanent and seasonal exhibits. The main gallery covers the broad swath of Venice history going back centuries. Further along, discover the incredible work of Dr. Fred Albee as both surgeon and developer. You may know the City nickname, “Shark Tooth Capital of the World,” but see how much more there is to the fossilized record of Venice.
When you have visited all the exhibits, head next door to the Old Betsy Museum at 343 Nassau St. S. This open-viewing storage facility houses the City’s 1926 American LaFrance 75-gallon pumper. Although you cannot enter the building, sit on one of the benches outside in the shaded viewing area, feel the Gulf breezes brush your cheeks, and take in every detail of this firetruck. Just think about all the amazing rescues this 100-year-old vehicle has seen.
Your history experience doesn’t have to stop there. Explore Venice and see some history out in the wild. Walk the downtown streets. While you shop and dine, pause and look at the buildings that the businesses are housed in. Go to the San Marco Building or Burgundy Square and touch it. Yes, touch it. You are now connecting to one of the first buildings that went up — buildings that lived through the Great Depression and World War II, and housed many different businesses, from old-time community
anchors to new shops started by retirees in their second career. These places hold some amazing memories.
Next, head out into the neighborhoods — areas such as Venezia Park and Gulf View give you the opportunity to experience for yourself the walkability that famed city planner John Nolen designed for Venice. Along the way, pay attention to the parks. Nolen believed strongly in giving people easy access to nature. You won’t have to go far to find green space. Larger parks such as Venezia, West Blalock, and John Nolen are nestled into neighborhoods providing areas for community gatherings and recreation. Heritage Park, running along the median of West Venice Avenue to the beach, is literally
a stroll through Venice history. If you get lost along the way, consider it a little adventure. You may come across a hidden pocket park, a mid-century modern masterpiece, or a curvilinear street that guides you to new surroundings.
The public art that adorns the City pays tribute to our past as well. The murals paint a beautiful picture of the places and events that our community is known for. Whether it is the new and dynamic circus mural, or the collage of historic events at the Intracoastal Waterway, take in this visual tapestry to see Venice history through the eyes of an artist.
There are so many ways to take in Venice history during this Centennial. To learn more about the Venice Museum, the City’s Centennial plans, our historic areas, and more, visit venicegov.com. — Provided by Harry Klinkhamer, City of Venice Historical Resources Manager

Rip currents are a significant coastal hazard along Florida’s extensive shoreline, posing risks to swimmers and other beach users.
Understanding how these strong, narrow channels of water form and recognizing the visual cues that indicate their presence is essential for effective safety planning and emergency response. This overview explains the natural processes behind rip currents, highlights common indicators, such as discolored water, calm patches, and rapidly moving debris, and outlines the potential dangers associated with these powerful ocean phenomena.
The guidance presented here is based on established research and best practices in coastal management.
STAYING SAFE AROUND RIP CURRENTS
Safety is all about preparation and knowing what to do. Follow these tips to protect yourself:
Swim
Where Lifeguards Are Present: Always choose swimming areas with active lifeguard supervision.
Don’t Fight the Current:
If caught in a rip current, resist the urge to swim directly back to shore. Instead, swim parallel to the shoreline until you’re out of the current.
Float and Signal: If swimming becomes too challenging, float on your back and signal for help by waving your arms.
Stay Informed:
Check local advisories and weather reports before heading to the beach. Lifeguards and local authorities provide up-to-date warnings and conditions.
KEY TAKEAWAYS: Florida Coastal Safety
Ensuring safety along Florida’s coastline requires a proactive and informed approach. The guidelines and insights provided on this page are designed to empower beach users to identify rip current hazards and respond effectively. By following these safety protocols, heeding local advisories, and observing lifeguard instructions, you contribute to a safer coastal environment for everyone. Continuous vigilance and adherence to best practices are key to mitigating the risks posed by rip currents. We encourage you to integrate this information into your beach planning and share it with others, so that together, we can enhance safety and enjoyment along Florida’s beaches.

Florida law requires a vehicle to be registered within 30 days if the owner becomes employed, places children in school or establishes residency (applying for homestead property tax exemption or registering to vote). If you have relocated from out of state, you will need the current title to register and title your vehicle. If your title is being held by a lien holder, you must provide your registration. You must present proof of Florida insurance. The vehicle ID number must also be verified; therefore, you will need to bring the vehicle to our office or contact us regarding other arrangements. If your vehicle is already registered in Florida, you are required to change the address.
Vessels/Boating:
While Florida titles and registers most vessels, some states do not. If you are bringing your vessel to Florida from a state that issued you a title, it must be presented. If your vessel comes from a state that issued you a registration only, it must be presented. If your vessel is already registered in Florida, you are required to change the address.

PREPARING FOR NATURE’S FURY Understanding Hurricane Season
by David Joyner, Owner, Joyner Family Insurance and Venice Area Chamber Member
The annual arrival of hurricane season starts in June and usually extends to November, bringing with it the ominous threat of powerful storms that can wreak havoc on land and sea alike.
Hurricane season is not a uniform period of continuous activity but instead follows certain patterns influenced by various meteorological factors. In the Atlantic Basin, for instance, the peak of the season typically occurs from mid-August to late October, when conditions are most favorable for storm formation. However, storms can and do form earlier or later in the season, influenced by ocean temperatures, atmospheric conditions, and global weather patterns like El Niño and La Niña.
By taking the following precautions, you can better prepare yourself before, during and after as well as financially in case your property is affected by a hurricane.
Check your current insurance coverage: Review your existing homeowners or renters’ insurance policy to understand what is already covered in terms of natural disasters like hurricanes. Typically, standard policies may cover wind damage but not flooding.
Consider additional cov age: If you live in a hurricane-prone you may need additional coverage for flood damage. Flood insurance is typically purchased separately from homeowners’ insurance and on average takes 30 days to acquire, unless required by your lender.
Understand your policy limits and deductibles: Make sure you know the limits of coverage and any deductibles that apply. Deductibles for hurricanes or wind damage may be different from those for other types of claims.
Evaluate replacement cost vs. actual cash value: Understand whether your policy covers replacement cost (the cost to replace your belongings at today’s prices) or actual cash value (replacement cost minus depreciation).
Document your belongings: Keep an inventory of your belongings and their value. This will help you file a claim more efficiently if your property is damaged.
Review and update your policy annually: Regularly review your insurance coverage to ensure it meets your current needs and reflects any changes in your property or belongings. Be sure to print your policy and keep it safe, take it with you if you evacuate. At the very least, know your policy number, effective dates and claims phone numbers.
Contact your JFI insurance
agent: Our experienced insurance agents at Joyner Family Insurance are here to help you navigate the complexities of insurance coverage and ensure you have adequate protection against hurricanes and other risks.
PREPARED SAVES LIVES
Preparation is key to mitigating the impact of hurricanes on communities and individuals. Early awareness and planning can significantly reduce the risk of injury and property damage. Here are essential steps to take before hurricane season.
Develop a Family Emergency Plan: Establish evacuation routes, designate meeting points, and ensure everyone knows what to do in case of an emergency.
Build an Emergency Kit: Stock up on essential supplies, such as non-perishable food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, and important documents.
Secure
Your Property: Trim trees, secure loose outdoor items, reinforce windows and doors, and consider installing storm shutters or impact-resistant glass.
Stay Informed
:
Monitor weather forecasts and warnings from trusted sources. Sign up for emergency alerts provided by local authorities.
on page 76 >
DURING THE STORM
When a hurricane approaches, follow these guidelines to stay safe:
AFTER THE STORM
Once the hurricane has passed, the dangers are not over. Be cautious of hazards, such as flooding, downed power lines, and weakened structures. Only return home when authorities deem it safe to do so.
• Evacuate if Necessary: If authorities recommend evacuation, follow their instructions promptly.
• Seek Shelter: Stay indoors during the storm. Avoid windows and doors, and take refuge in a designated safe room or basement.
• Stay Informed: Keep a battery-powered radio or smartphone handy to receive updates.
Hurricane season is a time of heightened vigilance for our community, where the forces of nature can be both awe-inspiring and devastating. By understanding the seasonal patterns, preparing in advance, and staying informed during a storm, individuals and communities can better protect themselves against this powerful natural phenomenon. Through proactive planning and swift action, we can mitigate the impact of hurricanes and ensure our safety and resilience in the face of nature’s fury.

FINDING THE RIGHT ADVISOR TO SELL YOUR HOME
By Victoria Stultz - Broker/Owner Engel & Völkers Suncoast and Venice Area Chamber Member
Navigating the real estate market can be a complex endeavor, especially for sellers looking to get the best possible deal for their property. One of the most crucial steps in this process is finding the right real estate advisor. Here’s how you can effectively interview a realtor to ensure they are the perfect fit for your needs.
First, consider their experience and track record. Ask potential realtors about their recent sales history, specifically focusing on properties similar to yours. Inquire about how long these properties stayed on the market and how close the final sale price was to the initial listing price. This will give you a sense of their expertise and ability to price your home accurately.
Next, discuss their marketing strategy. A good realtor should have a comprehensive plan that goes beyond just listing your home on the MLS. Ask them how they intend to market your property online and offline, including social media campaigns, open houses, and professional photography. The more detailed and innovative their strategy, the better your chances of attracting serious buyers quickly.
Communication is another critical factor. During your interview, gauge how responsive they are to your questions and concerns. Ask them about their preferred method of communication—whether it’s phone calls, emails, or text messages—and how often you can expect updates. A realtor who communicates clearly and consistently will keep
you informed throughout the selling process, reducing stress and uncertainty. Additionally, inquire about their network of professionals. A well-connected realtor will have a list of trusted contractors, inspectors, and mortgage brokers who can assist with various aspects of the sale. This network can be invaluable in smoothing out any bumps along the way. Lastly, trust your instincts. The rapport you build during your initial meet-
ing can be a good indicator of future interactions. Choose someone who listens to your needs and makes you feel comfortable.
By thoroughly interviewing potential realtors on these key points—experience, marketing strategy, communication style, professional network—you’ll be well on your way to finding a real estate advisor who can help you successfully navigate the selling process.

VAHS sponsors a wide variety of educational programs and initiatives focusing on local and state history including: The Betty Intagliata Lecture Series held in the evenings, and the newly created Venice Centennial Lecture Series held in the mornings to celebrate Venice’s Centennial; the Venice Express quarterly newsletter; a historic Plaque Program; research into area history; an outreach to schools and other local organizations; a scholarship program; and docent-led tours of the Depot Campus.
hibits, and learn about the history of the building from our knowledgeable docents.
Education is central to our mission. VAHS provides a variety of educational opportunities for members and the public.
The Depot Campus includes the Historic 1927 Venice Train Depot, and the former Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus train car. VAHS raised funds to purchase, restore, and reconfigure the train car to create exhibits of circus history. These exhibits illustrate how the performers lived on the train car. In addition, they describe the innovations which took place in the circus between 1960 and 1992 when the circus wintered in Venice.

The Betty Intagliata Lecture Series and the Venice Centennial Lecture Series are sponsored by VAHS, with permanent funding provided by the Bill Jervey, Jr. Charitable Foundation. The lecture series, featuring noted scholars and speakers, are free and open to the public. In addition, we offer the Speakers Bureau where knowledgeable VAHS members are available to provide a variety of presentations to community groups within the Venice area to educate, enlighten, and entertain. Each presentation addresses an aspect of Venice area history.
VAHS relies on donations to continue its maintenance of the Depot Campus, its educational programs, and its preservation of Venice history. VAHS also relies on volunteers to fulfill its mission. People with a variety of backgrounds and talents are needed to support the diverse programming sponsored by the historical society.
We will be celebrating the 1927 Historic Venice Train Depot Centennial in March of 2027. The events of this historic celebration will be listed on our website as they unfold.

HEALTH & WELLNESS
We know taking care of your health is of paramount importance, and the Venice area has the healthcare professionals and facilities to keep you in tip top shape.
100 Years Is a Healthy Start
As the City of Venice continues to thrive into a new century, Sarasota Memorial is proud to flourish at its side, expanding and evolving to meet the needs of our community and build a healthier future.
Whether it be the ongoing expansion of Sarasota Memorial Hospital - Venice, with its new five-story patient care tower, additional surgical suites, and an Emergency Care Center that has more than doubled in size, or opening a new urgent care center in South Venice while upgrading services at the Sarasota Memorial Health Care Center off the Venice Bypass, our commitment to the Venice community is matched only by the support we have received in kind.
For 100 years, we’ve grown together — older, wiser, and a little bit wider — but it feels like we’re just getting started.
Here’s to 100 more.
SUN SAFETY & SKIN CANCER PREVENTION
Written by Blessy Mathew Jacob, MD
Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute and Venice Area Chamber Member
PROTECTING YOUR SKIN WITH PROPER CLOTHING
Wearing protective clothes is also essential for sun protection. The degree of protection provided by clothes is defined by the ultraviolet protection factor (UPF). The categories of UPF range from 15-24 as “good protection,” 25-39 as “very good protection,” and 40-50 for “excellent protection.” Loose-fitting, light-colored, longsleeve shirts and pants made from breathable fabrics (like cotton) are acceptable options when in the sun and wanting to stay cool but also protect the skin.
SPF UPF
Sunlight is essential to ensure we receive adequate vitamin D, and it has beneficial effects on our mood. Still, ultraviolet radiation (from the sun’s rays, also known as UV rays) can damage our skin and lead to skin cancer. According to the National Library of Medicine, the incidence of melanoma, the most fatal form of skin cancer, is increasing faster than most cancers in the U.S. – with a 320% jump in diagnoses between 1975 and 2018.
THE ABCS OF SKIN CANCER
Older adults, people who are fair-skinned or those with a lot of freckles and moles are generally at greater risk of skin cancer. While many skin cancers are highly treatable, if you notice anything suspicious on your skin, you should report it to your general practitioner.
Here is an easy way to recognize if a mole or other skin lesion may be cancerous – remember the ABCs of skin cancer:
Asymmetry: one half of the mole doesn’t match the other
Border: is irregular
Color: is not uniform
Diameter: greater than 6 mm (about the size of a pencil eraser)
Evolving: size, shape or color changes
IMPORTANCE OF SUNSCREEN
Sunscreen contains “filters,” better known as a sun protection factor or SPF, that absorb or reflect the radiation in ultraviolet light. SPF in sunscreen measures its ability to protect against sunburn. While all individuals are subject to the dangers of UV radiation and will benefit from sunscreen use, those with fair or lighter skin are most susceptible to dangerous sun damage and should prioritize the regular application of sunscreen. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends choosing sunscreen products with an SPF of 30 or higher. Sunscreens must be applied liberally and repeatedly to sun-exposed areas to provide the most effective protection.
MEASURES EFFECTIVENESS OF SUNSCREENS
PROVIDES ONLY UVB PROTECTION (UNLESS STATED)
SPF 15 PROLONGS PROTECTION 15 TIMES THE TIME IT TAKES TO BURN
MEASURES EFFECTIVENESS OF SUN PROTECTIVE FABRICS
PROVIDES BOTH UVA & UVB PROTECTION
UPF OF 50 BLOCKS OUT 98% OF UV RAYS WHEN WORN
A CLOSER LOOK AT SUNGLASSES
Many people consider sunglasses a stylish accessory. They are, in fact, an important part of UV safety protection. UV rays can damage our eyes as well as skin and even contribute to cataracts. While the standard pair of sunnies is designed to block rays from entering the front of our eyes, sunlight enters from all areas. To help protect your eyes, invest in quality sunglasses with polarized lenses. These contain a special filter that blocks reflected light to cut harmful glare and haze.
So, before you head out, remember this simple formula: Slip, Slop, Slap & Wrap -- Slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen, slap on a hat and wrap on a quality pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes!

STAY STRONG, STAY SAFE: Prevent Falls and Live Fully on the Suncoast
Written by Kelly Ward, M.S., Therapeutic Aging. The Fall Prevention Lady
To enjoy all the wonderful activities the Suncoast has to offer—and to live each day to the fullest—you need to have the strength and stability to do the things you love. One of the most important factors in maintaining that independence is lower body strength.
In fact, lower body weakness is the number one cause of falls among older adults. That means your legs are your “fall prevention muscles.” If you want to react faster to sudden imbalance, walk with stability, and reduce your risk of falling, then strengthening both your upper and lower leg muscles is essential.
THE SIMPLEST WAY TO STRENGTHEN YOUR LEGS: CHAIR STANDS
One of the easiest and most effective exercises for building leg strength is the chair stand. It requires no special equipment and can be done anywhere. How to do it:
• Sit on a sturdy chair.
• Cross your arms over your chest if possible, then stand up and sit back down.
• If needed, use one or both hands for support.
• Repeat!
Tip: Using your arms less makes the exercise more effective for your legs—but start where you are.
How Many Should You Do?
I recommend using the Senior Fitness Test as a guide. Here’s how:
• Set a timer for 30 seconds.
• Count how many times you can stand up and sit down in that time.
• Write down your number—that’s your daily goal.
As it gets easier (when the last rep feels as easy as the first), add another repetition.
Why it matters: Stronger legs improve:
• Reaction time
• Walking stability
• Muscle tone
• Your ability to get up from a chair—or even the floor
Practice makes progress. And with strong legs, independence is within reach.
BONUS: EXERCISES FOR STRONGER FEET AND TOES
Don’t forget—strong legs need strong feet to support them. Try these simple exercises to improve foot strength and balance:
• Toe Raises – Lift your toes while keeping your heels on the ground.
• Heel Raises – Lift your heels while keeping your toes on the ground.
• Toe Presses – Press your toes into the floor while seated or standing.
• Big Toe Bends – Gently bend your big toe back and forth to keep it flexible. These exercises can be done daily and only take a few minutes. They help improve your foot strength, balance, and overall stability. Living safely and independently on the Suncoast isn’t just about sunshine and sandals—it’s about being proactive with your health. Strengthen your legs, wear secure shoes, and build up your balance from the ground up.
Strong legs. Safe shoes. Simple habits. That’s your recipe for staying on your feet and enjoying every step of life.
FOOTWEAR MATTERS: DON’T LET FASHION TRIP YOU UP
It’s tempting to slip on a pair of flip-flops on a sunny Florida day, but it’s important to know that flip-flops are a major fall risk.
Here’s why:
When wearing flip-flops, your toes are constantly gripping the shoe to keep it on. This prevents you from fully lifting your feet while walking—leading to trips and stumbles.
Look for sandals that secure around both the front and back of your foot. There are plenty of lightweight, stylish options that also keep your feet secure.
Yes, fashion matters—but safety should come first. A fall on the sidewalk doesn’t look good on anyone!

Each child receives nutritious meals daily, with nearly 123,000 meals and snacks served from August through May, providing more than half of their daily nutritional needs. Comprehensive health screenings - including vision, hearing, and dental - help ensure children are ready to learn.
Family well-being is central to our work. Family Advocates partner with parents to set and achieve financial, educational, and occupational goals. Through our awardwinning Families First Institute, 419 parents and caregivers enrolled in courses last year, building skills in parenting, personal growth, career readiness, and financial literacy.

Sarasota County Schools understands this and has embraced a forward-thinking approach known as College, Career, and Life Readiness (CCLR). We want all students to leave high school with an informed awareness of career options, post-secondaryeducation resources, at least one workbased learning experience, and a personalized plan for their future.
COLLEGE READINESS: MORE THAN ACADEMICS
All Sarasota County high schools offer extensive support in navigating the college admissions process. Our high schools have Career Centers, staffed with Career Advisors available to assist students in researching colleges, applying for scholarships, and understanding financial aid. Through college fairs and partnerships with local institutions, the district also ensures that all students, regardless of background, have access to the resources necessary to pursue higher education.
CAREER READINESS: PREPARING FOR A CHANGING WORKFORCE

THE GOLDEN WINDOW:
Why Early Education Is the Key to Child, Family, and Community Success
Written by Ana McClendon, Director of Outreach, Early Learning Coalition of Sarasota County and Venice Area Chamber Member
If we miss the first five years, we miss everything. Often called the Golden Window of Opportunity, these early years are when 90 percent of brain development occurs, wiring young children for language, literacy, and limitless possibility. Every word spoken, every book shared, and every moment of play lays the groundwork for success. These are the moments when children are not just preparing for school; they’re building the foundation for life.
But not every child begins this journey on equal footing. Research shows that by age four, the number of words a child hears can vary by millions depending on the circumstances they are born into. Yes-millions. This “word gap” doesn’t just affect vocabulary; it ripples through kindergarten readiness, third grade reading scores, high school graduation rates, and even the pursuit of higher education and careers. Perhaps most striking, studies suggest the best metric of child poverty is not always income but how often a child is spoken to and read to.
This is why access to high-quality, affordable early education is absolutely critical. Far from the outdated myth of babysitting or “just playtime,” early learning environments are safe havens where children’s well-being, academic growth, and so-
cial-emotional development are nurtured every day. Much of this growth happens through intentional interactions, like serveand-return conversations, where teachers respond thoughtfully to a child’s words and actions. Children also learn to share with peers, practice patience, build critical thinking skills, and develop resilience. Behind every classroom door are trained teachers who follow research-based curricula, craft intentional lesson plans, and apply best practices to guide children through their most formative years. Early education is not about passing the time; it’s about preparing the whole child for life’s journey.
At the very heart of these efforts lies literacy. Early literacy is often called the nucleus of success because it influences every area of a child’s growth and is a key component to school readiness. Did you
know that reading aloud to a young child for just 15 minutes a day can make a huge difference? And it doesn’t matter what you’re reading: street signs, grocery labels, magazines, even trifold brochures at the tire shop—they all count. Reading aloud sparks language development, strengthens phonetic awareness, expands vocabulary, and nurtures curiosity. It also instills a love of reading, a gift that can last a lifetime.
Access to childcare extends far beyond the child. High-quality early education is the cornerstone of family empowerment and workforce stability. According to the Florida Chamber of Commerce, childcare challenges are the number one reason parents leave the workforce—most often mothers. When families cannot access affordable, reliable care for their babies, toddlers, or preschoolers, careers stall, household stability suffers, and businesses struggle to recruit and retain talent. While early learning is often associated with kindergarten readiness, it’s equally important role is keeping parents in the workforce and strengthening the economic backbone of any community.
The ripple effect is undeniable. Children succeed. Families thrive. Employers retain talent. Communities grow stronger. Investing in early education is not an act of charity. It’s a strategy that fuels both human potential and economic prosperity.
In Sarasota County, the Early Learning Coalition is committed to closing the achievement gap, elevating families, and preparing today’s children to become tomorrow’s leaders. But the responsibility doesn’t rest with one organization alone. It takes the partnership of families, educators, businesses, neighbors and fellow nonprofits to ensure every child enters school ready to learn and ready to succeed.
If there is anything you can do today to move the needle and raise the profile of early education, it starts with speaking up. Whether you are involved in a nonprofit, a business, a citywide initiative, or local festival, keep the birth-to-five community in mind. Bring it up. Advocate for this age bracket. Shine a light on early education and help it rise as a priority in every community.
Every conversation, every effort, every voice helps open the golden window a little bit wider.
