Preservation is Good for Business in Claremont

authenticity, and a meaningful story. These visitors dine in local restaurants, shop in independently owned stores, attend cultural events, and often return with friends and family. The result is a steady flow of visitors who are drawn specifically by Claremont’s unique atmosphere.

In Claremont, preservation is not only a cultural value—it is an economic strategy that attracts visitors from across Southern California and beyond. For decades, Claremont Heritage has championed the protection and adaptive reuse of many of the city’s most iconic landmarks. These include the Padua Theater, now used as a popular event venue; the Claremont Depot, home to the Claremont Lewis Museum of Art; and the Verbal Building—originally the First National Bank of Claremont— now home to offices, a yoga studio, and Pizza N’ Such, which serves delicious food and libations. Other examples include the College Heights Packing House, a vibrant shopping and dining destination; the original Ice House, now home to the popular Back Abbey restaurant; and the Old School House, which today houses offices, restaurants, and fitness facilities.

Preservation also strengthens property values and encourages reinvestment. When historic districts and landmark properties are protected, businesses and property owners can invest with confidence, knowing that the surrounding character and quality of place will be maintained. Thoughtful preservation, paired with appropriate new development, creates the stability that is essential for long-term economic growth.

Claremont Heritage is also headquartered in the historic 1926 Garner House, a beautiful Spanish Colonial Revival residence. The house celebrates its centennial this year, as Claremont Heritage marks its own 50th anniversary. These places are far more than historic structures—they are anchors of Claremont’s commercial and cultural vitality. They create a sense of authenticity that cannot be replicated in newer developments and give the city a distinctive identity in a highly competitive regional marketplace. Historic preservation also supports what economists call cultural heritage tourism—visitors who seek out destinations with character,

The City’s adoption of its Cultural Resources Preservation Ordinance in 2024 marked an important milestone in aligning economic vitality with stewardship. Clear guidelines and protections help ensure that new projects complement Claremont’s existing historic fabric, reinforcing the charm and walkability that residents and visitors alike value so highly. Simply put, preservation is sustainable development. Reusing historic buildings reduces waste, conserves materials, and keeps investment circulating locally. It strengthens community pride while supporting the small businesses that define Claremont’s character. In Claremont, preservation is not an obstacle to growth—it is the foundation of it. By protecting the places that tell our story, we ensure that our economy remains vibrant, resilient, and uniquely our own. THE MILLS ACT

A Smart Investment for Homeowners, Realtors and the Community The Mills Act is one of California’s most effective preservation tools—and one of its best financial incentives. This state program allows owners of designated historic properties to receive significant property tax reductions in exchange for maintaining and preserving their homes. For Homeowners: • Potentially substantial property tax savings of 50% or more • Financial flexibility to reinvest in maintenance and restoration • Increased pride of ownership and long-term property stability • Excellent resale advantage, the Mills Act stays with the property and benefits subsequent Homeowners. For Realtors: • A powerful marketing advantage for eligible properties • Expanded buyer interest due to reduced tax burden • Stronger long-term value retention in historic neighborhoods The Mills Act makes preservation practical and financially beneficial supporting both community character and smart real estate investment. GREETINGS

Dear Friends, Welcome to Claremont. Whether you are visiting for the first time, considering making Claremont your home, opening a business, attending one of our colleges, or have lived here for decades, I am glad you are here. When people ask me what makes Claremont special, they often expect me to talk about our beautiful tree-lined streets, historic Village, vibrant arts community, local businesses, or world-class colleges. And while those are certainly part of our story, they are not what first comes to mind.

JOSH MERRY CHAIR OF THE BOARD California Bank & Trust JOHN NEIUBER PAST CHAIR Trinity Youth Services MATT ZERTUCHE CHAIR OF THE BOARD-ELECT Paymintz Processing & Payroll ELISABETH ARMIJO SECRETARY Meraki Now, Inc.

What makes Claremont special is the people. Over the past year, I have had the privilege of meeting hundreds of individuals who call this community home. Business owners who know their customers by name. Volunteers who quietly give their time to causes they care about. Educators who invest in the next generation. Neighbors who show up when someone needs a helping hand. Community leaders who work every day to make Claremont a place where people feel welcomed, connected, and valued. What I have discovered is that Claremont is more than a place. It is a community of people who genuinely care about one another. You can feel it when you walk through the Village and are greeted with a smile. You can see it at community events, local restaurants, nonprofit fundraisers, farmers markets, concerts, and celebrations throughout the year. You can experience it in the countless acts of kindness, generosity, and service that happen every day, often without recognition or fanfare. As CEO of the Claremont Chamber of Commerce, I have the honor of supporting the businesses, organizations, and individuals who help make this community thrive. My role is ultimately one of service—to help create connections, support local businesses, welcome new members, and contribute to the continued success of the community we all share. This Guide was created to help you explore all that Claremont has to offer. Inside, you’ll discover local businesses, community organizations, educational institutions, dining destinations, cultural attractions, and many of the experiences that make this city unique. My hope is that as you explore these pages—and our community—you will experience what so many of us already know: Claremont is a place where people matter. Thank you for being part of our story. Whether you are here for a day, a season, or a lifetime, there is a place for you in this community. We are glad you’re here. Warmly,

Kathleen Fariss Kathleen Fariss, CEO Claremont Chamber of Commerce

laremont doesn’t announce itself in the way some destinations do. There’s no one place that defines it, or tells you where to go first. On paper, it might read like a classic college town, tree-lined streets, historic buildings, a walkable downtown. All true. But that’s not really what you notice when you’re here. What stands out is how easy it is to settle in without a plan. A weekend in Claremont works best when you leave space for it to unfold. The more loosely you approach it, the more the city reveals itself, not through big moments, but through small decisions that shape the experience. Start by arriving without much urgency. Stay at a hotel near the Village if you can. Being within walking distance changes the entire feel of your stay. You won’t need to think about parking or directions. You’ll just step outside and start moving. CLAREMONTCHAMBER.ORG

QUICK FACTS

As the evening sets in, head toward the Village. You’ll notice quickly that everything feels close. Restaurants, shops, and outdoor spaces, all within a few blocks. There’s no pressure to choose the “right” place. Pick a space that serves the moment, slow down, and let your time begin there. Claremont’s dining scene has built a reputation as a place worth driving for, with dozens of locally owned restaurants and specialty spots close together. The benefit for you is simple: you don’t have to plan it out. After dinner, keep walking. Maybe you stop for dessert, maybe you don’t. Maybe you end up browsing a shop that’s still open or just circling back toward your hotel. The pace is yours to set. That’s part of the appeal.

A Saturday morning comes quietly. There’s no rush to get anywhere early, but it’s worth stepping out while the day is still fresh. Coffee is an easy starting point. Places like Iron & Kin or a local bakery like Crème feel like natural entry points into the day, not destinations, just places to ease into. From there, you walk. Claremont is built for it. Streets lined with mature trees, storefronts that invite you in without trying too hard, small details that are easy to miss if you’re moving too quickly. There’s no need to map out a route. Just follow what catches your attention.

At some point, you’ll find yourself near the Claremont Colleges. Even if you didn’t plan on visiting, it’s worth stepping in. What makes them stand out isn’t just their academic reputation, but how open and integrated they feel. Seven institutions share a contiguous space, blending together in a way that creates something closer to a small city than a traditional campus. Walk through the grounds, and you’ll pass gardens, courtyards, sculptures, and buildings that span generations of design. It doesn’t feel like a formal tour. It feels like you’ve stumbled into a place from another time that was meant to be experienced slowly. You don’t need a destination here either. Just keep moving, take a few turns, and let the setting do the work. By midday, you’ll start to feel hungry again, but there’s no reason to rush into a reservation. This is where Claremont’s layout works in your favor. Everything is close enough that you can decide in the moment. Maybe you stop into Wolfe’s Market and put together something simple to enjoy outside. Maybe you sit down somewhere in the Village or head toward the Packing House for a slightly different atmosphere.

The Packing House offers a shift without requiring much effort. Housed in a historic building, it brings together a mix of food, drink, and small vendors under one roof. It’s easy to spend more time here than you expected, moving from one place to another, picking up a drink, sharing something small, then lingering a bit longer. The afternoon doesn’t need much structure either. This is a good time to wander through shops, step into places you didn’t plan to visit, and let curiosity lead. Claremont has a way of rewarding

that approach. Boutiques, vintage stores, bookstores, specialty shops, they’re all part of the experience, but none of them demand your time. You choose what fits. There’s also a layer of history here, though it doesn’t present itself as something separate from the present. The Village, for example, wasn’t always called that. The name was part of a deliberate effort to shape the identity of the downtown, an idea that stuck and continues to define how the area feels today. That kind of intentional planning shows up in subtle ways, in how the streets connect, how businesses cluster, and how the space feels cohesive without being overly designed. As the day transitions into evening, you don’t need to reset or start over. Just keep going. Maybe you head back to your

Bert & Rocky’s

hotel for a short break, maybe you move straight into dinner. Again, options are close and varied. You could go somewhere you noticed earlier in the day or try something completely different. There’s no shortage of choices, and that’s part of what makes the experience feel flexible rather than fixed. Dinner might turn into dessert, or a drink, or both. Ice cream at Bert & Rocky’s is hard to pass up, especially with its long list of flavors. Or you might find yourself back at the Packing House, settling into a slower pace as the evening winds down. If you’re still out, Claremont holds onto a certain calm even at night. It doesn’t shift into something louder or more crowded.

If you’ve come this far for your getaway, you cannot miss California Botanic Garden. Accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, the Garden is a living museum with curated collections of more than 22,000 California native plants, some of which are rare or endangered. The Garden displays about 1,170 taxa of California plants and includes those native to the California Floristic Province. In addition to featuring a world-class botanical library and graduate-level education program, the Garden offers horticulture and community education. Visit their website to find out “what’s in bloom” during your stay.

It stays consistent. That makes it easy to keep going without feeling like you have to. Sunday morning brings a different kind of energy, especially if you make your way to the Claremont Farmers & Artisans Market. It’s one of those experiences that feels more local than visitor-focused, in the best way. Vendors line the street with fresh produce, baked goods, and handmade items, while people move through at an unhurried pace. Conversations happen naturally. It’s easy to spend more time here than you planned. This is where the weekend starts to feel less like a visit and more like participation. You’re not checking off stops. You’re just part of what’s happening. From there, you can keep things simple. Maybe you visit the California Botanic Garden and spend some time walking through native landscapes. Maybe you

stop by the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology for something a little different. Or maybe you just take one more walk through the Village before heading out. There’s no right way to end the weekend. That’s been the point all along. Claremont doesn’t rely on big, scheduled moments to leave an impression. It’s not built around a checklist. What makes it memorable is how naturally everything fits together, the walkability, the food, the open campuses, and the small discoveries that happen when you’re not trying to force them. An unexpected weekend here isn’t about surprise in the traditional sense. It’s about realizing, somewhere along the way, that you didn’t need a plan to enjoy your time. And that you wouldn’t have wanted one anyway.

sk someone what makes Claremont special and you’ll likely hear familiar answers. The Village. The colleges. The tree-lined streets. The thriving arts community. The local businesses and community events that bring people together throughout the year. Those things certainly help define the character of Claremont, but they don’t tell the whole story. After speaking with community leaders, business professionals, nonprofit executives, and advocates, a different answer emerged. Again and again, conversations returned to the same idea: people. People who invest in one another. People who volunteer their time. People who mentor, encourage, and create opportunities for others. People who show up. Communities do not become special by accident. They are shaped over time by individuals who choose to contribute, serve, and build something larger than themselves. In Claremont, that spirit of connection continues to influence the way people lead, work, volunteer, and support one another. CLAREMONTCHAMBER.ORG

Many of the leaders interviewed for this article could trace important moments in their lives and careers back to a simple reality: someone invested in them before they felt fully ready. For Abby Pascua, CEO of AgingNext, that lesson has shaped both her leadership philosophy and her understanding of community. “When I look back on my own journey, I can point to individuals who gave me opportunities before I felt fully ready for them,” she shared. “They saw potential in me that I didn’t always see in myself.” That experience is one many people can relate to. Growth often begins when someone offers encouragement, guidance, or an opportunity that feels slightly bigger than our current abilities. Sometimes all it takes is one person willing to believe in someone else’s potential. Kathleen Fariss, CEO of the Claremont Chamber of Commerce, believes one of the greatest gifts we can give another person is our belief in them. “Throughout my life and career, I

have been fortunate to have leaders, mentors, friends, and family members who invested in me long before I felt fully ready,” she shared. Fariss believes encouragement, mentorship, and creating opportunities for others can have effects that extend far beyond a single individual. “When we help someone grow, gain confidence, or step into their potential, we are influencing everyone they will impact in the future.” The ide a sur faced rep e atedly throughout these conversations. Leadership is not simply about managing organizations or achieving results. It is about helping people discover what they are capable of becoming.

I @claremontchamber F @claremontchamber

Josh Merry, Vice President and Branch Manager at California Bank & Trust, shared a lesson from one of his mentors that continues to influence him today. “Knowledge is the only thing you can give away and still keep.” It is a simple idea, but one that speaks to a broader truth. Communities become stronger when people willingly share their experience, wisdom, and support with others. Whether through formal mentorship, volunteerism, professional development, or simply taking time to encourage someone, investing in people strengthens the entire community. As Pascua noted, some of the most rewarding moments in her career have come from watching volunteers become advocates, staff members become leaders, and individuals discover strengths they never knew they possessed. For her, leadership is more than building organizations — it’s about building people. RELATIONSHIPS ARE THE FOUNDATION

While opportunities and mentorship help people grow, relationships are what hold communities together. Several contributors pointed to relationships as one of the defining characteristics of Claremont. Stacey Caponigro, Realtor and Regional Property Manager, believes that is what makes the community unique. “Claremont has a way of making you feel connected,” she said. “It is a community where relationships matter and where people still take the time to get to know one another.” As a business owner, Caponigro has long believed that business is fundamentally about relationships. Over the years, she has watched clients become friends, worked alongside fellow business owners who support one another, and volunteered with organizations committed to strengthening the community. That spirit of connection extends beyond business. It can be found in nonprofits working to address community needs. It can be

found in schools, volunteer organizations, neighborhood groups, local events, and community partnerships. It appears whenever people choose collaboration over isolation and connection over convenience. Michelle Bligh, President of Claremont Graduate University, sees that same spirit reflected throughout the community. “What stands out is the willingness of people to invest in relationships. Whether through our educational institutions, local businesses, nonprofit organizations, cultural organizations, or neighborhood gatherings, there is a spirit of engagement that creates a strong sense of belonging.” Bligh believes Claremont’s unique character comes from its ability to combine intellectual curiosity with genuine community. The city’s educational institutions bring together people from around the world, while the broader community creates opportunities for connection, civic engagement, and service. Together, those relationships help foster a culture where people continue to learn from one another, support local causes, and work toward common goals. Chris Suchánek, Founder and Chief Strategy Officer of Firm Media, has experienced that same dynamic through both business and community service. Through organizations such as Firm

Media, Hitch Burger, and Project Boon, he has seen how shared purpose often creates lasting relationships and stronger communities. “People thrive when they feel valued, heard, and part of something larger than themselves,” he said. “When people come together in service, business, or shared purpose, meaningful connections naturally follow.”

“When people come together in service, business, or shared purpose, meaningful connections naturally follow.” CHRIS SUCHÁNEK FOUNDER / CHIEF STRATEGY OFFICER FIRM MEDIA

Fariss sees connection as the thread that ties communities together. “People want to know they matter,” she explained. “Connection creates trust. Trust creates collaboration. And collaboration creates the conditions where people and communities can thrive.” She believes many of Claremont’s greatest strengths stem from people choosing to engage with one another, support local causes, and invest their time and talents in making the community stronger. Pascua experienced that firsthand through her involvement with Claremont Young Professionals. What began as an opportunity to connect with other professionals ultimately became a window into the broader culture of the community. She watched relationships form, partnerships develop, and young professionals grow into leaders who now help shape Claremont’s future. “What makes Claremont special is not its reputation, its colleges, or even

its beautiful trees,” she reflected. “It’s the nonprofits, businesses, volunteers, and community members who continue to invest in each other and work together to make this community stronger.” That sentiment may best capture the common thread running through every conversation. The colleges matter because people invest in education. The Village matters because people create gathering places. Local businesses matter because people build them, support them, and contribute to the community around them. Even the traditions that define Claremont endure because people continue showing up year after year to participate, volunteer, and carry them forward. At its core, community is built through relationships. KINDNESS IS NOT WEAKNESS

One of the most interesting themes to emerge from these conversations was the repeated rejection of a common misconception: that kindness and accountability are somehow opposites. In reality, many contributors argued the opposite. For Pascua, some of the kindest moments in leadership happen during the most difficult conversations. L e a d e rsh ip re qu i re s hone st y, accountability, transparency, and difficult decisions. Kindness is how leaders navigate those realities. 24 I

KINDNESS

“It takes courage to be transparent, to admit mistakes, to give people honest feedback, and to remain compassionate when tensions are high,” she explained. Caponigro shared a similar perspective. “I don’t believe kindness and accountability are opposites,” she said. “Some of the kindest things we can do as leaders are set clear expectations, communicate honestly, and follow through on our commitments.” Jim Elsasser, Superintendent of the Claremont Unified School District, believes kindness and accountability belong together. “Kindness is not the absence of high standards; the two belong together,” he said. Through his work in education, Elsasser has found that some of the most meaningful leadership moments come from helping people grow while also challenging them to reach their potential. He believes people thrive when they feel genuinely seen and supported, but also when expectations are clear and meaningful.

These reflections reveal an important distinction. Kindness is not weakness, avoidance, or the absence of accountability. Instead, it is often expressed through honesty, humility, empathy, and respect. It is choosing to see the person behind the situation. It is creating environments where people feel valued, heard, and supported even when difficult conversations need to take place. In that sense, kindness is more about being intentional in how we treat one another. REASONS FOR HOPE

At a time when many communities face uncertainty and division, every contributor expressed optimism about the future. What gives them hope is not the absence of challenges. It is the people they continue to encounter every day.

Jim Elsasser, Superintendent of the Claremont Unified School District, finds hope in the students he has watched grow up over the past decade. Reflecting on the Class of 2025, who were kindergarten students when he arrived in the district, he points to a generation that is compassionate, engaged, and willing to stand up for what is right. “When I see students mentoring younger peers, organizing to support a cause, or simply choosing kindness when no one is watching, I am reminded that the future rests in remarkably good hands.” Pascua pointed to individuals who continue saying yes to opportunities even when they feel unprepared, choosing growth over comfort and service over hesitation. Caponigro finds hope in the willingness of people to support one another during difficult times.

“I see it in our local businesses, our nonprofits, our schools, our Chamber, and in neighbors helping neighbors,” said Caponigro. That willingness to step forward when needed appears to be one of the defining characteristics of Claremont. It is visible in volunteers serving on boards and committees. It is visible in community organizations working to address local needs. It is visible in business owners who invest back into the community and residents who support causes larger than themselves. Hope, these leaders suggest, is not passive. It grows when people continue showing up. It grows when individuals choose service, connection, and participation. And it grows when communities create opportunities for others to belong. For Fariss, hope comes from seeing ordinary people choose service every day. She believes these everyday acts create the sense of belonging and connection that communities need to thrive. “Leadership is not defined by a title,” Fariss reflected. “Every one of us has the opportunity to make a positive difference through our actions, our words, and the way we treat others. Building a more kind, connected, and courageous world starts with investing in people.”

WHAT MAKES CLAREMONT FEEL DIFFERENT

Communities are complex. They are shaped by history, geography, culture, institutions, traditions, and countless individual contributions. Yet throughout every conversation, one theme remained remarkably consistent. People. People who invest in one another. People who share their knowledge and experience. People who mentor future leaders. People who volunteer their time. People who support local businesses, nonprofits, schools, artists, entrepreneurs, and community causes. People who choose connection over division and service over self-interest. Communities do not become special by accident. They become special because people care enough to participate in them. Perhaps that is what makes Claremont feel different. Not perfection. Not prestige. Not any single organization, institution, or event. But people who continue to show up for one another, build relationships, create opportunities, and invest in the future of their community. Because what makes Claremont special is not only what has been built here. It is what people continue to build together.

laremont doesn’t announce itself as a dining destination in the way larger cities do. There’s no stretch of chain restaurants or an obvious restaurant row. Instead, it reveals itself gradually, block by block, storefront by storefront, in a way that feels more assembled than planned. That’s part of what makes eating here feel a little unexpected. Within a compact, walkable village, more than 70 independently owned restaurants, cafés, bakeries, and specialty shops create a dining scene that feels personal and locally shaped rather than standardized. You can park once, step into the Village or the Packing House, and spend an afternoon or evening moving between coffee, lunch, a drink, and dinner without much thought about logistics. It’s not just variety. It’s proximity, pace, and the sense that each place exists because someone chose to build it here.

Start in the Claremont Village, where tree-lined streets and historic storefronts set the tone. Restaurants sit shoulder to shoulder with boutiques, wine shops, and bakeries, making it easy to follow your appetite rather than a set plan. A few blocks over, the Claremont Packing House offers a different rhythm. The restored citrus facility now houses a mix of restaurants, bars, and casual stops, all under one roof or just steps apart. It’s the kind of place where you might begin with a drink, shift into dinner, and end the night somewhere entirely different without ever leaving the building. Together, these areas create something that feels cohesive without being curated in an obvious way. NOTABLE RIGHT NOW

Claremont’s dining scene continues to evolve, with newer additions and refreshed concepts adding to the mix. At Orchard Restaurant, located within the DoubleTree by Hilton, the setting leans more polished. It’s one of the clearer connections between Claremont’s dining scene and its hotel experience, offering a place where visitors can settle in. Union On Yale brings a more contemporary, social dining experience into the mix, with a menu designed for sharing and a setting that leans into evenings that stretch a little longer than planned. Just steps from Hotel Casa 425, Casa Maguey adds another layer to the downtown mix, offering a convenient transition from stay to dinner without needing to go far. THE PLACES PEOPLE KEEP TALKING ABOUT

HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT

Not every standout spot in Claremont sits front and center. The Quarter Creole Cuisine offers a menu rooted in New Orleans flavors, bringing something distinct to the area without much need for attention beyond the food itself. Gus’s BBQ has a long-standing presence and a straightforward approach: smoked meats, classic sides, and a setting that doesn’t try to be anything other than what it is. At Petiscos, classic and casual Mexican cuisine creates an enjoyable outdoor dining

As the day winds down, Claremont shifts easily into an evening destination. Claremont Craft Ales anchors the local beer scene, producing a steady lineup of house brews and drawing a consistent crowd. Nearby, Packing House Wines offers a more relaxed approach to wine, with tastings and pairings that feel accessible rather than formal. Inside the Packing House, The Whisper House leans into a more intimate atmosphere, with cocktails that reflect a quieter, late-night pace. A DINING SCENE THAT COMES TOGETHER

What makes Claremont stand out isn’t just the number of places to eat. It’s how they come together. There’s no single defining cuisine or signature dish. Instead, Claremont offers a mix of locally owned restaurants, each shaped by different backgrounds, ideas, and approaches to food. The result is a dining experience that feels layered, personal, and, at times, a little unexpected.

Iron & Kin Coffee

Some restaurants in Claremont have settled into a steady rhythm of local attention and repeat visits. Bardot continues to draw diners with its California-French approach and patio setting that works well year-round. ¡Viva Madrid! remains a go-to for Spanish tapas, especially for shared plates and longer, unhurried meals. For something more casual but just as consistent, Some Crust Bakery, Crème Bakery, and Bert & Rocky’s Cream Co. continue to show up across social feeds and weekend plans alike. These are the in-between places that turn a meal into a longer outing. CLAREMONTCHAMBER.ORG

laremont’s appeal isn’t built around a single landmark. It comes from how many different experiences sit close together, connected by streets and spaces that are easy to move through and explore. You can move from the botanic garden to a museum, from college campuses to late-night activities, without feeling like you’re checking boxes. The experience builds as you go, shaped as much by the places you discover along the way as the ones you planned to visit.

The California Botanic Garden remains one of Claremont’s most defining spaces, not just for its scale, but for how it invites people to spend time. Beyond its established landscapes and collections, newer additions like the Children’s Woodland introduce a more interactive, family-oriented element designed for exploration, movement, and time outside. The balance between education and accessibility is part of what makes the garden easy to return to. It works just as well as a planned stop as it does a place to slow down for a few hours.

THE PLACES THAT SHAPE THE EXPERIENCE

At the heart of Claremont are a handful of spots that reflect the city’s identity, education, history, and strong connection to the natural environment. The California Botanic Garden spans 86 acres and is dedicated to California native plants. Trails wind through curated landscapes that shift from desert terrain to shaded woodland, offering a quiet, immersive way to spend a morning or afternoon. Just beyond, the Claremont Colleges create a setting that feels open and accessible rather than enclosed. Seven institutions share contiguous campuses, where architecture, public art, and tree-lined walkways make it easy to explore on foot. For a different kind of experience, the Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology offers a focused but engaging look at prehistoric life, with exhibits that are approachable without feeling simplified. Claremont’s history is also present in more subtle ways. Through local preservation efforts and walking tours, visitors can get a clearer sense of how the city developed and why its character has remained so consistent over time. And running through it all is a piece of Route 66, still visible in the buildings and businesses that line Foothill Boulevard. Here, it’s not a standalone attraction; instead, it’s part of the everyday fabric woven into the city.

ROUTE 66, STILL IN MOTION

Claremont’s connection to Route 66 is easy to miss if you’re not looking for it, but that’s part of what makes it interesting. Rather than leaning into nostalgia, the city reflects a more continuous history of the route. Buildings have been repurposed, businesses have evolved, and the corridor remains active without feeling overly curated. Places like Wolfe’s Market, located along the Route 66 corridor, reflect how that history remains part of the city’s everyday landscape. It’s less about stopping for a photo and more about recognizing how the past still shapes what’s here now.

ATTRACTIONS THE PLACES YOU DIDN’T PLAN TO STAY

Some of the most memorable parts of Claremont aren’t the major attractions, but the places where you end up spending more time than expected. Lost Levels, tucked inside the Claremont Packing House, leans into nostalgia with a collection of retro arcade games and consoles. It’s the kind of place you might plan to stop into briefly and end up staying much longer. The Folk Music Center offers a different kind of experience, part retail space, part cultural archive, with instruments and artifacts from around the world, along with occasional performances and gatherings. Claremont’s arts scene also plays a role here. Small galleries, museum spaces, and the monthly Art Walk create opportunities to engage with local artists in ways that feel integrated into the community rather than set apart from it. For something quieter, the James Turrell Skyspace at Pomona College offers a lightbased installation timed to sunset and sunrise every day. It’s a simple concept, but one that tends to leave an impression. And throughout the Village and Packing House, there are spaces designed less for moving through and more for staying, like courtyards, patios, and shaded areas where the pace naturally slows.

A PRACTICAL PLACE TO BEGIN

For those looking to get oriented, the Claremont Visitor Center is a useful first stop. It’s a place to pick up maps, get local recommendations, and fill in the gaps between planned stops, often pointing visitors toward places they might not have found otherwise. JAMES TURRELL SKYSPACE

VISITOR CENTER

In Claremont, attractions aren’t defined by scale or spectacle. They’re defined by how they fit into the overall experience. A visit might start with a specific destination, but it rarely stays that way for long. The combination of walkability, variety, and smaller discoveries along the way is what shapes the day. It’s less about seeing everything and more about letting the experience unfold as you go.

laremont has long been known for its treelined streets, colleges, and walkable Village, but there’s another layer to the city that reveals itself more gradually. It’s a place where healthcare, fitness, and everyday well-being are part of the rhythm of daily life. Not just services you access when needed, but experiences woven into how people live, recharge, and stay connected. That balance between care and lifestyle is what makes Claremont feel different. You can schedule an appointment, take a class, recover, reset, and step right back out into a community designed for movement and interaction.

A BROADER APPROACH TO WELLNESS

Beyond healthcare, Claremont continues to evolve as a place where wellness is part of everyday life, not just a response to illness. Fitness studios, independent gyms, and specialized training spaces are spread throughout the city, offering everything from strength training to more personalized coaching environments. OneGen Gym, led by internationally recognized athlete Larry Wheels, has brought a new level of visibility to Claremont’s fitness scene, drawing both locals and visitors interested in highperformance training. At the same time, newer wellness-focused businesses are expanding what self-care looks like. Cold plunge therapy, red light therapy, and recovery-based services are becoming more common, giving people options to reset physically and mentally in ways that feel intentional rather than routine. Salons and spas also play a role here, not just as places for appearance, but as part of a broader approach to feeling well. Whether it’s a haircut, skincare treatment, or simply time set aside to pause, these spaces contribute to the same idea: wellness is built into everyday moments.

Call (909) 399-5504 www.pilgrimplace.org admissions@pilgrimplace.org 625 Mayflower Road Claremont, CA 91711

Claremont’s approach to health goes beyond treatment. Prevention and education are just as visible. Inter Valley Health Plan, a locally based nonprofit, has served the region for decades with wellness programs that include fitness classes, health education, and Medicare support. These kinds of offerings reinforce a culture where staying healthy is a shared effort, supported by both organizations and community members. It’s not unusual to see this play out in simple ways. Walking groups moving through tree-lined neighborhoods. Students and residents are using local trails. Fitness classes happening in parks or studios just steps from the Village. The environment itself encourages participation. UNEXPECTED WAYS TO RECHARGE

Wellness in Claremont doesn’t always look like a scheduled appointment or structured routine. Often, it’s found in the spaces in between. A quiet walk through the colleges, where architecture, gardens, and public art create a slower pace. An early morning at the Botanic Garden, surrounded by native landscapes. Time spent browsing shops, sitting at a café, or simply being outside without an agenda. These moments don’t typically show up on a wellness itinerary, but they’re part of what makes Claremont feel restorative. The city’s scale, layout, and atmosphere make it easy to step away from urgency and settle into something more balanced. A COMMUNITY THAT SUPPORTS WELL-BEING

The Claremont Chamber of Commerce continues to support healthcare providers, wellness businesses, and community organizations that contribute to the city’s overall quality of life. Through collaboration and visibility, these partners help ensure that both residents and visitors have access to the services and experiences that support long-term well-being.

A CITY BUILT ON LEARNING

THE CLAREMONT COLLEGES

AN EVOLVING ACADEMIC LANDSCAPE

Claremont is home to one of the most distinctive higher education systems in the country: a consortium of seven independent institutions located within a single square mile. The Claremont Colleges include five undergraduate schools: Pomona College, Scripps College, Claremont McKenna College, Harvey Mudd College, and Pitzer College, as well as two graduate institutions: Claremont Graduate University and Keck Graduate Institute. Each campus operates independently, with its own academic focus, faculty, and student experience. At the same time, they share resources such as libraries, dining halls, and research facilities, creating a hybrid model that blends the intimacy of small colleges with the scale of a larger university system. The result is a collaborative environment where roughly 8,500 students and thousands of faculty and staff engage across disciplines, institutions, and ideas. This structure, originally envisioned in the early 20th century, continues to shape Claremont today. It allows students to specialize deeply while remaining connected to a broader academic community, and it contributes to the city’s steady rhythm of lectures, performances, exhibitions, and public events.

While the consortium remains a defining feature, Claremont’s academic environment continues to be shaped by both undergraduate and graduate education working side by side. Claremont Graduate University contributes to that balance with a focus on interdisciplinary study and researchdriven programs, adding a layer of depth that extends beyond the undergraduate experience. Pomona College, as the founding institution and one of the nation’s leading liberal arts colleges, continues to anchor the system with a strong emphasis on access, academic rigor, and undergraduate research. Together, these institutions reflect a model that has remained consistent over time, one that prioritizes close academic communities while supporting a broader, shared network of resources and ideas.

BEYOND THE CONSORTIUM

GUIDANCE

DID YOU KNOW? The Claremont Colleges were designed around a simple idea: small colleges sharing big resources. Instead of building a single large university, the system was intentionally structured so that each school could maintain its own identity while benefiting from shared libraries, facilities, and academic opportunities. That model, first proposed in the 1920s, still shapes how students learn and collaborate today.

Claremont’s commitment to education extends beyond the Claremont Colleges. Claremont Lincoln University adds another dimension to the city’s academic profile, offering graduate programs designed for working professionals with a focus on ethical leadership and real-world application. Local K–12 schools also play an important role in shaping the community. The Claremont Unified School District is recognized for strong academic performance and community involvement, while institutions like the Webb Schools offer additional college-preparatory pathways. That influence extends into spaces that connect education with public experience. The Raymond M. Alf Museum of Paleontology, located on the Webb Schools campus, is one of the only nationally accredited museums of its kind based at a high school. It brings research, fieldwork, and exhibition together in a way that is accessible to students and visitors alike. Together, these institutions contribute to a culture where education is continuous, not confined to a single stage of life.

A WALKABLE CAMPUS EXPERIENCE

LEARNING AS A WAY OF LIFE

One of the most distinctive aspects of education in Claremont is its visibility and accessibility. The campuses are not isolated spaces. They are integrated into the city itself. Treelined walkways, open courtyards, public art, and historic architecture create an environment where visitors can experience the academic atmosphere simply by walking through town. From Scripps College’s carefully designed gardens to Pomona College’s performance spaces and Harvey Mudd’s research facilities, each campus offers a different perspective on what education can look like. For residents and visitors alike, this creates a setting where learning feels tangible, present, and part of the everyday experience.

In Claremont, education extends beyond classrooms and degrees. It shows up in public lectures, gallery exhibitions, community programs, and the steady exchange of ideas that comes from living in a place shaped by scholars, students, and educators. This environment influences the character of the city itself. It supports a culture that values thoughtful conversation, creative exploration, and a strong connection between knowledge and community life. Whether arriving for a campus tour, attending an event, or simply walking through the colleges, it becomes clear that education in Claremont is not just an institution. It is part of the city’s foundation and one of the reasons it continues to stand apart.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM Education in Claremont is visible across the city. • Public lectures and speaker series • Art exhibitions and performances • Research centers and institutes • Community-based learning programs

laremont’s story begins with intention. Founded in 1887 and incorporated in 1907, the city emerged not by accident, but through a careful balance of planning, education, and community-minded growth. Early leaders shaped Claremont with a long view in mind, laying the groundwork for a place that would value both livability and learning. In its earliest years, Claremont was an agricultural town, with citrus serving as the backbone of the local economy. The Claremont Board of Trade, established in 1908 and later becoming the Claremont Chamber of Commerce, played a central role in promoting that industry and guiding early development. As the city grew, so did its ambitions, expanding beyond agriculture into a more diverse and forward-looking community.

That evolution was not just economic, it was civic. Under the leadership of Lela Ackerman, the Chamber helped shape Claremont’s physical and cultural identity in the 1920s and ‘30s. Her influence extended into city planning, infrastructure, and the adoption of the City Beautiful movement, which emphasized thoughtful design, treelined streets, and cohesive architecture. Many of the elements that define Claremont today, from its civic center to its residential layout, trace back to this era of intentional planning. A CITY SHAPED BY EDUCATION

Claremont’s identity is inseparable from its colleges. What began as a vision in the early 20th century became one of the most distinctive academic models in the country. In 1925, Pomona College President James A. Blaisdell proposed a consortium model inspired by Oxford, one that would combine the intimacy of small colleges with the shared resources of a larger university. That idea became the Claremont Colleges, now a group of seven institutions spread across contiguous campuses. Nearly a century later, the consortium continues to define the city. With thousands of students, faculty, and staff, the colleges bring intellectual energy, architectural character, and cultural depth to Claremont. Their presence influences everything from local businesses to public spaces, reinforcing the city’s reputation as a place where education and everyday life are closely connected. More than 100 years in, the consortium still reflects its original idea: independent institutions working together to shape both students and the community around them.

THE VILLAGE AND A GROWING IDENTITY

Claremont’s downtown did not always carry the name it does today. Originally known as the Central Business District, it was rebranded as “the Village” in 1959 through a coordinated effort led by the Chamber. The name reflected something more than geography; it captured a sense of place. That same period marked a broader shift in how Claremont saw itself. No longer defined solely by agriculture or early development, the city leaned into its identity as a walkable, communityoriented destination. Local businesses, civic institutions, and residents all played a role in shaping that character, one that continues to attract visitors today.

Most likely, Claremont was named for Claremont, New Hampshire, when it was founded in 1887.

THE STORY OF CLAREMONT

A LIVING HISTORY

ROUTE 66 AND THE LAYERS OF HISTORY

Claremont’s story is also tied to one of America’s most iconic roadways. Route 66 runs through the region, connecting the city to a broader narrative of travel, migration, and mid-century growth. Historic buildings, former roadside stops, and preserved corridors offer glimpses into that era, when Claremont served as both a waypoint and a destination. Ongoing efforts to preserve and highlight Route 66 reinforce the city’s connection to this national story, adding another layer to its historical identity.

shared spaces, preservation in Claremont is not about standing still; it is about carrying forward what makes the city distinct. At the same time, Claremont continues to evolve. The partnership between the Chamber and Discover Claremont, supported by the city’s Business Improvement District, reflects a modern approach to promoting the community while staying grounded in its history.

Claremont’s history is not confined to landmarks or dates. It is visible in the layout of its streets, the architecture of its campuses, and the way the community gathers and grows. From its citrus roots to its role as a center for higher education, from early civic planning to ongoing preservation efforts, Claremont tells a story of continuity. It is a place shaped by people who valued design, education, and community, and those values remain evident today. As the city looks ahead, its history continues to serve as a foundation, not just something to remember, but something to build from.

PRESERVING THE PAST, LOOKING AHEAD

Claremont has long valued preservation alongside progress. Organizations like Claremont Heritage, founded in 1976, have worked to protect the city’s architectural, cultural, and natural resources and to educate residents and visitors about its history. Today, that commitment continues. Milestones such as the 50th anniversary of Claremont Heritage offer an opportunity to reflect on what has been protected and why it matters. benefit of the local community. Like many early California settlements, Claremont’s first form of government was the Town Meeting. Although it had no legal sanction under California law, a constitution for the Claremont Town meeting was adopted early in the history of the town. The Town Meeting had committees on stores and the downtown commercial area, but it wasn’t until December,

1908, that an association was organized with the establishment of the Claremont Board of Trade. The Board of Trade was responsible for the first City Plan and enjoyed the same status as a chamber of commerce for several years. In 1922, the Claremont Chamber of Commerce was organized after a campaign by the Los Angeles Chamber. The Chamber’s first President was George Griswold.
