things to know
BEFORE YOUR
FIRST DAY
1
2 3 4 5
Everything will feel extremely weird. You are in a completely new setting and you get the chance to start over. You will make new friends and have new experiences, but it’s okay to miss home. It’s hard to go from something you know to something that is unfamiliar. Wait to get your books. You may not need all of them. Your professors will talk about it on the first day of class. Make a friend in every class and get their name and phone number. It will help you when you need someone to study with, or to get the notes you missed on a day you weren’t in class. Leave your residence hall room door open! This helps you make friends quickly, and once someone starts doing it, then others will follow suit. Everyone is new and this is one of the best ways to meet your floormates. It’s OK if it takes you a while to make friends. Everyone is new and getting used to this new environment. Some people are better at finding a group than others and that’s okay! Joining an RSO can help you find people that have similar interests.

How your values change in college
I don’t know who you are right now, but I will say this:
You don’t know who you are yet. You are about to enter a unique chapter of your life. Parents slowly lose influence on you and life choices will become your own. If you are anything like teenage me, your first thought is something like... I make my own choices. That may sound fun. That may sound terrifying. I can tell you it is a bittersweet mixture. Your choices and consequences are your own. Life no longer hangs off of what your squad thinks. You will learn who you truly are. In college we are all trying to get by. In the next few years, friends will come and go. Your friend group changes according to what is important to you. Your values will slowly mold your friend group. In turn, your friend group changes you.
College brings about your true work ethic. How hard you worked in high school means nothing out here. Some of you will fall in love with a major. That love, combined with meeting hard-working students in your field, will shift your whole thought process. On the flip side, it can be easy to fall through the cracks. Most of you will be experiencing a new level of freedom, so while it can be fun to be your own boss, it’s important to keep your priorities straight. If you keep pushing, you will find yourself and happiness. It will be a rough journey at times. Do not give up. Find yourself, discover your true values, and you will be happy.
College is a beautiful catalyst for personal growth...
Now get out there!

17 THINGS YOU’LL NEED
IN YOUR RESIDENCE HALL
2 3
4
5
FOOD
You will always be hungry. No matter how healthy you think you will eat, you will want snacks for late nights and between long classes.
BLANKETS
Having blankets will come in handy, especially for the winter.
CLEANING SUPPLIES
This is important. You will need supplies to clean your bathroom and messes in your room. Things will get messy without these cleaning supplies. Don’t forget a bucket, bleach and some rubber gloves.
UNDER BED STORAGE
There is limited closet space in rooms, especially when sharing with a roommate. It will make a world of a difference when you can store clothes under your bed.
SPEAKER
Music is helpful when studying or hanging out with friends. Having a speaker makes every day better.
6 FAN
Living without air-conditioning in the late summer can be difficult, but having a fan makes life a little cooler. It can also provide white noise when trying to sleep. Fans are crucial for rooms above first floor.
7 RUGS OR CARPET
The hard floors can be a pain and can make the floors cold, but having rugs or carpeting makes the room feel homey and warm.
8 POWER STRIPS
There are limited outlets through the room, so power strips and extension cords are life-savers.
11 SHOWER MAT
Having a shower mat will make your feet happy and makes everything cleaner. It also helps to prevent falling on a slippery floor.
12 MEDICINE
Bringing all the medicine you need will come in handy. Bring extra for colds and the flu because once someone comes down with something, it can quickly spread throughout the close quarters.
13 AIR FRESHENER
Sometimes your room will just need to smell better than it does.
9 UMBRELLA
14 DRY ERASE BOARD
10 COFFEE MAKER
DECOR 15 WALL Those boring white walls need some
Michigan weather is very unpredictable, so having an umbrella is very helpful when you need to be covered on walks to class. Late nights require coffee. Having a coffee maker will help you power through study sessions.
Staying organized is key. Having a place to write down dates will keep you on top of things and will help you and your roommates know each other’s schedules.
color. Posters, pictures, or anything that makes you feel at home will do!
16 DOOR STOP
Having a door stop to prop your door open helps you make friends in college and helps you air out your room.
17 LIGHTS
Adding some festive lighting around the room is always fun, especially when you want a relaxing atmosphere.

Why your
planner
will be your
best friend As freshman, a lot of things change. You don’t have your dog licking your face to wake up in the morning or your delicious waffles at 6:45 a.m. that your parents made so you wouldn’t go hungry. The biggest change you may encounter is the loss of your personal assistant. No I am not talking about an employee or a real assistant, I’m talking about your mom. The woman who constantly has set aside her life to remind you to go to school on time, make all of your practices and remind you when your dentist appointments are. Lets face it; she isn’t coming to college with you whether you would like it or not. You may never be able to replace your mother, but you will need to find someone to help you stay on schedule while you are away at CMU. This is why you need a planner. At the beginning of the year you will see hundreds of planners floating around. You will start classes and be automatically be flooded with assignments, parties and small things you’ll want to remember. This is where you will write them down. Write down everything like that speaker that is coming to campus, or the due date of your paper you might put off for a week and forget about. Trust me, writing everything down is extremely important. College will throw a lot of curveballs at you. You will forget assignments or group project meetings. Your planner is there to help you remember everything your mom has helped you with in the past. Just like your mom, your planner will never let you down.

CONNECTING with your ROOMMATES
Starting freshman year comes with a lot of stressors and unknown variables. In addition to choosing your potential career, there is gathering supplies, choosing a residence hall to move into and of course, for some, the biggest feat of all finding and living with roommates. If you’re worried about your roommates, you’re one of many incoming freshman and transfer students feeling the same anxiety. The good news? There are techniques that will help you and your future roommates get along. There are also resources devoted to helping you find the right roommates for you.
Be aware that not everyone feels or thinks the same as you do College is a mix of individuals from all sorts of backgrounds who may view the same issue in a different light. Usually when this happens, it gives us all a unique opportunity to see things from a different perspective. That’s one thing college is all about, widening our horizons.
It’s not the end of the world if you and your roommates don’t get along right away Upon meeting and moving in, it may feel like things just don’t click with one or all of your roommates. This is completely normal, and in some cases establishing a relationship and trust takes time. Other roommates may seem like they click immediately, but remember, it’s not a competition to see who gets along the best. Be sure to stay true to you.
Your vibe attracts your tribe Even if after a whole semester you feel as though your roommates aren’t the type of people you’d hang out with, take a chance and say hello to someone sitting next to you in class. Be yourself and talk about your passions with people. The only way for people to get to know you is if you open up. Now, more than ever, don’t be afraid to be you.
Switching roommates isn’t impossible If worse comes to worst, it is possible to switch roommates between semesters and even mid-semester. Finding new roommates can be achieved in multiple ways. In addition to the traditional form of roommate matching through Residence Life, apps such as the “Schools App” and services such as Facebook and Messenger have provided students with an opportunity to communicate through Facebook groups with other incoming freshman and transfer students from a particular school.
College is just as much about the journey as it is the destination Don’t forget to enjoy yourself. Soak up the little moments between deadlines. Take notice of the beauty throughout campus and enjoy the time you have to spend at your leisure.
College is an awesome time full of endless possibilities.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED By Kara Hengesbach
Getting involved on campus is a great way to meet new people, network with professionals and take that much needed break from classes.
By Kara Hengesbach
Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) There are nearly 400 student organizations on campus that are actively looking for members. Look into becoming a member of a RSO that relates to your personal interests or applies to your major. RSO’s that relate to your personal interests will allow you to meet people who share the same interests as you. Greek Life CMU’s Greek communities pride themselves in leadership, service and support, and they are looking for people just like you to join their fraternity or sorority. If you are interested in making lifelong friends while working alongside others to uphold designated values and goals, look into joining one of the many university-recognized sororities and fraternities on campus. Employment
College is expensive. A great way to combat the cost is by applying for a job on or off campus. Throughout the year, CMU employs numerous students with on-campus jobs that are tailored to fit your class schedule. Jobs can also be found off-campus in the city of Mount Pleasant.

What to expect on the first day of classes By Drew Forrest You are over-dressing, trust me, you are. Now, take a deep breath. Act like you have done this before. Now, when you get to class. . .you looked for your classroom before hand? Right? Of course you did! It’s important to know where your classroom is. Wandering around aimlessly is a bad thing. CMU students will always lend a helping hand, but learn to stand on your own feet early. It will help you in the long run. Upon walking in, half of the students will be seasoned pros.. The other half are just like you. By the term, “like you” I mean fresh, new and full of life... Don’t start screaming about how new you are Get settled into a seat and remember it. The seat you are sitting in is your seat. Defend that seat with your life. If anyone else touches that seat, feel free to give them the evil eye. It is a silent rule of college that the seat you sit in on the first day is yours for the rest of the semester! Take notes, professors don’t slow down for you, so keep it speedy. Keep your head on right. Don’t draw a crazy amount of attention to yourself. Hold your ground and take good notes. You’ll thank yourself later.

TRY THESE HEALTHY CAFETERIA HACKS
By Carlee Williamson
As a new college student, I’m sure you’ve heard about the dreaded “Freshman 15.” If you’re anything like me, you’re probably freaking out at the thought of not fitting into your favorite jeans once you move to campus. I’m here to bring you good news and assure you that a healthy lifestyle while at CMU is very possible if you’re willing to put in a little effort.
For the first time, you are completely responsible for the food you put into your mouth. No one will be saying, “Hey, haven’t you eaten pizza like three times this week?” or “Honey, you need to be eating more vegetables.” Your health is completely in your hands, so here are some tips from a fellow Chippewa who didn’t fall victim to the “Freshman 15”.
Fruit Infused Water
WHAT TO EAT IN RESIDENTIAL RESTAURANTS
Salads
Although it’s tempting to hit the soda machines every day, water is a much better alternative and your body will thank you for it. If plain water is too boring, try adding lemons, melon or cucumber for added flavor and vitamins.
Instead of a greasy cheeseburger, make a toasted wrap at the sandwich station. Fill it with veggies, protein, and some hummus or avocado instead of fatty dressing. Next, wrap it up and toast it in the panini maker until it’s golden and crisp. Enjoy!
Salads never sound as yummy as a cheesy slice of pizza, but thankfully there are many ways to spice up your boring salads in the cafeteria. For extra flavor and a little crunch, add grapes, berries or apples to your salad- it is delicious! If plain grilled chicken is getting boring, head to the RFOC’s Mongolian Grill and pick your meat and seasoning. Lastly, add the grilled meat to your salad and enjoy!
Sweet Treats
Whole Grain Options
Toasted Whole Wheat Wrap
Skip the ice cream and milkshakes and grab a bowl of Greek yogurt. Add berries and a few chocolate chips to satisfy your sweet tooth. This is packed with protein and will keep you feeling full.
If you have the option, choose wheat bread, whole grain pasta and brown rice. This is an easy way to avoid empty carbs while giving your body lots of great fiber.

Use the Student Activity Center and residential workout rooms. It’s free, so take advantage of the luxury of working out without paying a monthly gym fee.
•
Grab your friends and attend an on-campus fitness class. It’s fun to break a sweat with your friends and there are many weekly workouts you can choose from. After a stressful day, a high-energy fitness class with great music is just what you need to clear your mind.
•
Find a workout buddy and set times for each week that you will commit to workout together. This will make fitness part of your weekly schedule just like class, and you’ll have someone there to hold you accountable.
•
Going to the gym can get repetitive. Find alternative ways to get active such as rollerblading around campus, going for a run, joining an IM sports team, playing basketball or swimming.
•
Make a Pinterest board full of motivational quotes, transformation pictures, goal body pictures and exercises. Look back at this whenever you’re in need of some extra motivation to keep going.
•
Reward yourself! Set goals to keep up your workouts and every two months, treat yourself to a new workout outfit, running shoes or a bathing suit.
•
Pick a time when one of your favorite weekly shows is on to go to the gym. An hour of cardio is a piece of cake and goes by quickly when you’re paying attention to your show.
•
Take progress pictures. Sometimes we can’t see the results in the mirror, but you’ll be amazed at the improvements you’ll see when looking back at photos. Seeing your results is the best feeling and will push you to keep going.

How to get an on-campus job
By Alaina Kaupa
When searching for student employment, it is important to know where to look
Having an on-campus job is great due to the accessibility and schedule. If you live in the dorms or close to campus it is really easy to get to, especially if you don’t have access to a car. The schedule is also a benefit, because the majority of on-campus jobs are closed when school is during holidays and breaks.
The professional staff at CMU Student Employment is always ready and willing to help! Pictured (l-r): Corby Blem, Ginny McLeod, Lindsay Ranck, and Jon Goodwin.
1. Go to cmich.edu. 2. In the search bar type in “Finance and Administrative Services” and click the first link that comes up. 3. From there, scroll down and click on “Human Resources.” 4. On the right side of the page click on “Student Employment Services.” 5. This will bring up the career page where you can click on “current vacant positions” and search all the job openings for your “academic year.” When looking at all the options it is important to note that you can only apply for the jobs labeled as work study if financial aid has granted you the ability to do so. It is important to keep in mind that these jobs are not a blow off job just because they are on-campus. If you are fired from an on-campus job, you will not be allowed to work at any other job on-campus after that.

WHERE TO GO WHEN YOU HAVE QUESTIONS OR NEED HELP WRITING CENTER
The Writing Center is a great resource here on campus. Its job is to assist you in creating your best work so you feel confident when turning it into your professor. The Writing Center also offers writing classes for those who are looking to better their writing skills. With various hours seven days a week, there will always be someone available to help you with your essays or other written assignments. STUDY ABROAD OFFICE

PHONE APPS THAT
Every Needs! COLLEGE STUDENT
By Brianna Brugel
BANKING APP
For most college students, money is tight. It’s essential to keep track of your finances. Most banks have an app that will allow you to quickly track how much money you have in your account while on the go. This is important for those late night runs to taco bell when you aren’t quite sure if you can afford the taco 12 pack.
DICTIONARY.COM
In college you’ll find yourself looking for a dictionary or a thesaurus regularly. Who wants to lug around a dictionary and waste time searching for words? Download the Dictionary.com app to quickly look up words and definitions. It will be a lifesaver the next time you have to write an essay.
SPOTIFY OR PANDORA
Whether you’re working out, walking to class, studying or hanging out with friends chances are you’re listening to music. Music streaming apps like Spotify and Pandora allow you to customize your music and make playlists for all your different moods. They constantly update their music so you can listen to the latest songs without having to worry about purchasing them every month.
QUIZLET
Flashcards are a popular way for college students to study. However, making flash cards can be time consuming and pricey over time. With Quizlet, you can make flash cards quickly on your phone. It gives you access to your flash cards anytime and anywhere. An added bonus is you can electronically share your note cards with friends in your class, making studying a little more convenient.
GROUPME
In college, you’ll be apart of many groups. Finding a way to communicate with group members can be hassle. GroupMe is an app that allows multiple people to chat with one another. It’s kind of like a group chat you would have on your phone, but without all the pesky text message reminders filling up your inbox. It’s a convenient way for college students to organize their group chats and not have to use their actual phone number. You’ll find yourself using this app at some point while in college.
IBOTTA
Ibotta is an easy money saving app. This app helps you save money on the items you purchase everyday. You simply go to a store and purchase your items. If your purchase is eligible for a rebate, you can submit a photo of the receipt to be verified, and Ibotta will pay you via PayPal, Vemmo or gift card! It’s that simple. It’s a good way to save a little money while in college.
MYFITNESSPAL
In case you didn’t know, the freshman 15 is very real! It can be hard to maintain a healthy diet while in college. Myfitnesspal allows you to create goals for yourself. The app then develops a calorie intake plan for you based off your goals. Log all your food and exercise for the day to see if you’re staying on track. It’s a good way to keep yourself in check and see what you could improve..
Now that you are in college, it’s time for you to develop a professional profile. LinkedIn is an app that allows you to connect with people on a professional level. That can include fellow students or prospective employers. LinkedIn allows you to customize your profile with your resume and your information, making it easy for other professionals to learn about you and contact you. Everyone’s goal after college is to have a job, which is why it’s never too early to start making some professional connections.
GAS BUDDY
College students are good at saving their pennies, but this app makes it even easier. Mount Pleasant is full of gas stations. Driving around to find the cheapest gas takes forever. That’s why Gas Buddy is essential for any college student with a car. This app will tell you what gas station near you has the cheapest prices. This saves you time and money.

Charles V. Park Library
With four floors that get quieter with each level, the library has an atmosphere to match whatever your study needs may be. You can talk freely for a group project, or have total silence to study for a final exam all under one roof. The library also offers plenty of study rooms, tutoring services and printers for your convenience.
Education and Human Services Conference Rooms (EHS)
Hidden within the EHS are conference rooms that can double as study rooms. Each conference room has either one big table or multiple medium sized tables that can fit a good sized group comfortably. The tables come equipped with outlets and a dry erase board. An additional perk is the Einstein Bros Bagel located within the EHS.
The University Center is home to Starbucks, Burrito Bowl and the Down Under Food Court, so you’ll never have to pack up in the middle of studying to leave and get a snack. The UC is equipped with group study areas that make it perfect to study with friends or work on group projects.
Bioscience Building
The Bioscience Building is the newest addition to campus. The modern building is filled with a variety of plants and aquariums which make it the perfect place to feel relaxed while studying.

IT’S OK TO CHANGE YOUR MAJOR
I was involved with broadcasting throughout my high school experience, and I came to CMU knowing I wanted to be the next Ellen. I immediately became involved with the broadcasting organizations on campus. I realized I hated my classes and I hated going to the clubs I belonged to and then I realized: If I hate everything about my major now, how am I going to do this for the rest of my life? I took a step back and thought about the things I actually enjoyed doing. I wrote all of my interests down and gave them to an advisor. The advisor immediately suggested public relations, which is what my major is now. I love my major, my peers and the organizations I am a part of - so I know I’m in the right place.
By Elena Panyard
I definitely recommend getting involved with your major (or even other majors just to see) so you know for sure it’s what you want. Also, don’t be afraid to change your major, even if that means you’re going to be behind schedule. Better an extra year in college than spending the rest of your life doing something you hate. A great tool to use is the Degree Progress option on cmich.edu under “My Account.” Degree progress works as an online advisor to show how on track you are to graduate, and even allows for you to plug in potential majors so that you can see how your path may change. If you’re toying around with new majors this is a great tool to use. Picking a major can be a scary thing, but it’s the greatest feeling in the world when you find the one that fits you best.

things to do BEFORE YOUR
FRESHMAN YEAR ENDS
1
Create a resume.
2
Find at least one group/organization to join. When you first get to college it’s kind of hard to make friends with people outside of your residence hall. Joining at least one of the dozens of Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) on campus makes it so easy to connect with people of similar interests. Whether it’s intramural sports, Greek life, clubs within a major you’re interested in or causes you care about, CMU has it all.
3 4 5
No matter what your experience is, it’s important to start somewhere. This makes it so much easier on yourself as you start to build your credentials in college. It’s better to gradually add to your resume rather than throwing it all together in a pinch. Check out career services on campus for helpful tips, or even look around online!
Try a food you’ve never had. College is all about trying new things and discovering your likes and dislikes. Have you told yourself your whole life that you hate sushi? Grab your roommates and try it all together. Never had pineapple on pizza? Order it on half… just in case. Whatever it is, try it because you never know what new favorite you’ll find! Meet with an advisor or talk to some professors.
Start building important relationships with people that can help you early! Whether it’s to ask for advice about different majors and career paths, or just to stop in and introduce yourself, advisors and professors will appreciate your curiosity.
Get a solid workout routine.
If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times, but staying physically active in college is so important. And no, you can’t count the walk to and from class or dancing at the Wayside with your friends once a week as exercise. It’s important to balance your mind and body at school. Look on Pinterest, or come up with your own plan that works for you. You won’t regret it in the long run! By Molly Young
