EDITOR’S

NOTE

Reasons why we turned CM Life into the Daily Prophet today You might have a few questions about today’s paper — like “when did the Daily Prophet start delivering papers at Central Michigan University?” As cool as that would be, this is actually an edition of CMU’s independent student run newspaper, Central Michigan Life. Let us explain. As students, we’re at that point in the semester where course loads are piling up, yet the only work we feel motivated to do is calculate

how bad we can do on our final exam and still receive an acceptable grade. The recent election, no matter what political party you support, has done nothing to relieve already stressful tension on campus. This is probably the breaking point in the semester for students, including our staff at CM Life. But there is still something magical we can look forward to. If you’re like me,

you grew up infatuated with J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books, as well as the film adaptations, fan merchandise, theme parks, video games — you get the picture. With the highly anticipated Potter spinoff film, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” being released in theaters Nov. 17-18 at midnight, it is a special time for Potter fanatics. For more serious fans, it’s a time to dust off your house robes, wands, and round circle glasses and dress up for another midnight movie premiere we never thought we would

be able to experience again. For all Harry Potter fans, it’s a time to celebrate the revival after all this time of the phenomenon that shaped our generation. We hope you have as much fun reading this themed edition as we had putting it together. - Kate Carlson, Managing Editor

‘Fantastic Beasts’ is not a return to Hogwarts, but a new adventure After 19 years, seven books, eight movies and a Broadway show, J.K. Rowling’s generationshaping story about the “Boy Who Lived” has come to an end. But the world she created in the most popular fantasy series still has untold stories. This Friday, the “wizarding” world of Harry Potter will return to screens with a fresh set of characters and adventures in “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.” Inspired by a textbook approved by Albus Dumbledore himself, the film is a not a return to Hogwarts. “Fantastic Beasts” previously existed as a book written by Newt Scamander in the “Harry Potter” world. Rowling created the faux manual in real life in 2001. With those guidelines, she

will reportedly write at least five movies. The spinoff series tells the story of a British “magizoologist” Scamander, played by Eddie Redmayne, in 1920’s New York. The film finds him doing research for his new book, “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” — a text Potter would eventually get in his first year at Hogwarts. The beast-wrangling wizard makes his way to New York City, where the conflict of the story is introduced with a suitcase mixup with a “No-

Maj” — which is what Americans call “Muggles” — named Jacob Kowalski, played by Dan Fogler. The mixup leads to several beasts escaping and running wild through the city. While giving an audience a difference view of the wizarding world, “Fantastic Beasts” is an original story that doesn’t require knowledge of the Harry Potter series. I’ve been following the news about this film and reading countless reviews, I have accepted that Rowling’s new fantasy series is a change of pace from the Potter franchise. It is aimed at an older audience and has a brand new cast. Though I don’t think “Fantastic Beasts” could ever live up to her first set of stories,

it’s a good way to continue the magical world Rowling created because it doesn’t overdo

Potter’s story. Instead of taking her audience through another hero’s journey arc,

Rowling wrote the script of a new tale set in a different era with timely conflicts.

efore she became one of the most popular authors in the world, J.K. Rowling was traveling by train unsure about her future. Ultimately, she created a story that would shape and inspire a generation — a magical tale about a boy wizard. Rowling penned a story for her audience of eventually billions that took place in a wizarding world of magic. The protagonist, Harry Potter, grew up over seven years in seven books at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as he fought against dark magic, saving the world from the evil plans of Lord Voldemort. The popular book series grew into a billion-

dollar film franchise, a theme park, a Broadway play and countless other merchandise for fans who connect closely to Rowling’s world. More than 160 million copies of the “Harry Potter” series have been sold in the U.S., and more than 450 million have been sold worldwide. The series has been distributed in more than 200 territories and has been translated into 68 languages. On Nov. 17 the first film of the five-part spin-off “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” will premiere in theaters. The highlyanticipated movie has received 100 percent rating from Rotten Tomatoes, a movie review website. The worldwide box office money

made from the eight Potter films nationwide so far totals at $7.7 billion. The largest audience for Rowling’s Potter world is college-age Millennials, because of their age when the series was released. Chances are you could not find a Muggle alive today who has not heard of Rowling’s world she has expanded during the past 20 years. But for the Millennial generation specifically, the series is something that has been with them as they grew up with the beloved characters. Whether a casual or devoted Potter fan, most Millennials have never known an adolescent or adult life without Harry. For students on Central Michigan Univer-

sity’s campus, the impact of the series can be seen in the CMU club Quidditch team, a sport adapted from the Potter books. In addition, there is a chapter of the Harry Potter Alliance on campus, that identifies with Rowling’s message of love and overcoming evil and are inspired to perform charity work in the name of their favorite books. In the classroom, students can enroll in a class dedicated to analyzing the series and traveling across the world to countries where scenes of the story take place in the books and films. More subtle demonstrations of the devotion of college-age Harry Potter fans shows when students sport maroon and gold striped

THE HARRY POTTER GENERATION The adventures of Harry and his friends growing up with problems most young people face was something Rowling’s audience related to and still continue to love. Despite the fact that he teaches a class based on Rowling’s life work, Professor Joseph Michael Sommers said he is surprised by the success the Potter franchise continues to experience. “To a certain degree, I’m slightly flabbergasted the Millennials are still so impacted by (Harry Potter),” said the English professor. “(Rowling) is quite possibly one of the most important children literature writers, which is not to say she’s one of the finest.” Although he enjoys Harry Potter books, Sommers said he appreciates the prose in her adult mystery novels, the Robert Galbriath series, more than the seven Potter books.

“There are so many greater books Millennials could have attached to,” Sommers said. “But (Rowling) has a distinct voice, a specific writer’s voice which is something we don’t see that often.” More than other authors that people compare Rowling to, like J.R.R. Tolkein who wrote the “Lord of the Rings” series, Sommers said Rowling speaks to the Millennial generation much more effectively. “Rowling hits that beautiful medium where you can fall in love with her voice, fall in love with her creations, and she’s not opposed at going in and tugging at all of your heartstrings,” he said. Most people are fans of the series because of the strong multi-layered characters Rowling has created for her audience. “I love how she portrays her female characters,” said Madison Frye, a Grand Rapids junior. “They’re all super strong and smart. As a little girl being shown those characters, it was beneficial for me because that’s not what you w MAGIC | 13

CHALLENGING THE

WRITTEN WORD Banning books violates First Amendment, stymies creative thought

Among all forms of mass media, literature remains unmatched in its ability to shape young minds. A good book captures the imagination. It fosters boundless creativity and helps define who we are. For many students at Central Michigan University, the “Harry Potter” books were the defining stories of our time. The fantastical imagery, altruistic themes and the journey of a boy and his friends with magical powers helped show Millennials that anything was possible — that a poor, ignored orphan from the UK could become the most powerful and beloved wizard in fictional history. Though Potter’s message was aspirational, some concerned parents and religious crusaders continue to denounce the series. They miss the beautiful writing and well-conceived characters and instead focus on the violence and witchcraft. Since its release, the Potter books have been banned by groups in America and around the globe. The stories join books like the Holy Bible and the “Communist Manifesto” as some of the most historically banned books of all time. We question the logic of banning or censoring books, especially those that can change people’s lives for the better. We believe banning books of any nature — even those as dastardly as Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf — is wrong. Censorship of any kind represents a threat to liberty. In America, it violates our First Amendment rights to consume and digest whatever media we please, and runs counter to the ideals of an informed democracy. Great literature teaches us to think

EDITORIAL critically and explore the artistic recesses of our minds. Literature allows us to reexamine our beliefs in the hope of strengthening those ideals. Banning a book because of disagreements over content strips children and people of all ages of the chance to grow and contribute to the our marketplace of ideas. We understand that parents and religious organizations reserve the right to withhold ideas deemed inappropriate from their children and followers. It is up to parents to decide what a child does or views inside the confines of the home. That right, however, does not extend to government entities. We call on all public school systems, municipalities, local libraries and parent groups around the globe to cease any and all attempts to ban media. If we ban creative content that we disagree with — including hate speech on the internet — we forfeit what it means to live in a free society. Our world might be better off if Neo-Nazis and ethno-supremacists were were silent, but it is not for us to decide whether or not they deserve or do not deserve the right to speak freely. We have a Constitution and a Bill of Rights to decide that for us, and it has, succinctly, for more than 200 years. We must not allow the will of a few fearful individuals to dictate or hinder free thought. We cannot allow these

people to manipulate our government into censorship under the guise of protecting innocent minds. In an age of social media and smartphone overuse, banning a book is counterintuitive. The chief criticism of the Millennial generation is that we spend far too much time on the

Infographic Courtesy of PrinterInks

Internet, and that we’d be better off getting some fresh air or reading a book. If we agree with that premise, consider the negative cultural

implications of keeping people and children away from books that could inspire them to make our world a more vibrant, intellectual and positive place.

POINT vs. COUNTER POINT

To be a ‘die-hard,’ you must read the books Anybody can be a fan of Harry Potter, but not everybody can be a die-hard fan. Are you the type of person who watched the movies and then tweeted pictures of the Hogwarts house symbols? Without the books, none of that would exist, and die-hard Harry Potter fans are the protectors of those 3,407 pages of world-shaping material — depending, of course, on which edition they own. A movie can only capture the imagination for so long, and even though the Potter movies were one of the best book-to-movie adaptations ever, they still fail to represent the true depth of scenes and motivations of characters.

Rachel Trombetta Columnist

For example, it wasn’t just Neville Longbottom’s bravery that enabled him to pick up the Sword of Gryffindor. There’s more history to his story than an average movie-goer could ever fathom. Would a die-hard fan say they don’t care about that? No. Peeves. Winky. Ariana Dumbledore. Who are these people? If you ask that question, chances are you’ve only seen the movies.

Characters were left out in the movies left and right. Characters that meant something. Characters that readers love. Do not tell me that a quick Tumblr check on them is enough. I’ve read the books a few times each, and I’ve seen the movies at least 10 times apiece. I understand why people are fans of the movies, but no spell could make you more aware of the series than the books. You can still be a fan. No one is stopping you from loving the franchise, but do not ridicule die-hards for believing that an “everything Potter” fan should read the books. We have given Harry more

than just 19 hours of movie watching. We have internalized every word. Our books have tear-drop stains on certain pages. I started the books after I watched the first four movies. I am not a hipster who thinks I’m better because I knew Harry Potter before it was cool. I picked up that book series because the movies were not enough and I wanted more. Take a step back and let the die-hard fans, who invested their time in Harry Potter, have their moment. Stop moping in your dark corner, say lumos maxima, and pick up the damn books.

Potter is for everyone, not just book readers Not all of us got into Harry Potter at an early age – back then it was just another book series. Then the movies came out, and one after another, each film filled me with magic. It was beautiful, and I’m not the only one the movies got hooked to the glory of Potter’s world. So what if I never got around to reading the books? So what if I don’t know every minute detail down to the kind of shoes Harry wears? The books aren’t the only part of the fandom. They’re a huge part, yes, but don’t forget all the other pieces of Potter media that make the franchise

great. The Broadway plays, the fan art, the theme park, and everything else that is a part of the universe. The story is beyond the books now – it has a life of its own. With the widespread popularity of Potter as a whole, it’s hilarious people are still trying to police the title of a die-hard fan. I feel like I’m back in high school and the

mean girls are telling me I’m not cool enough. The thing is, fan policing is never usually done by people who genuinely enjoy the series, but rather self-entitled hipsters who called themselves fans before the movies. Who is anyone to tell anyone else how much of a fan they are? There isn’t a test you have to take to reach a certain level of fandom. You’re as big of a fan as you say you are. I can do without the hypercritical discrimination. If you’re so damn focused on guarding the title of “die-hard” fan, you miss the point of the story and deny people from

joining a beautiful community. Okay, give them a gold star, or a participation trophy – maybe they’ll loosen up a bit. Some Potter fans, like my colleague, attempt to feel superior by placing themselves above those who have not read the books. Being a diehard fan is a matter of love for the series, not a pissing match of who has memorized the most of J.K. Rowling’s manuscript. J.K. Rowling herself once spoke about her fandom, saying: “whether you come back by page or by the big screen, Hogwarts will always be there to welcome you home.”

Why can’t I be a superhero, too? During my childhood, I envied the cunningness of Batman, the elusiveness of Spiderman, and the strength of Superman. I idolized plenty of superheroes. Heroes who did not look like me, written mostly by men who did not look like me. It wasn’t until I read Gene Luen Yang’s recent take on the Man of Steel in “New Super-Man” that I realized how important it was to have a superhero with which I shared the same likeness. In a diverse society, it is vital for children to have role models who share similar life experiences. Representation across all types of media is necessary. That includes comic books. The story of Superman at its core is not only one that mirrors that of an immigrant’s tale, but that of a refugee. A strange being from a foreign land at war finds his place in a new society, using his abilities for good while coming to terms with humanity. Yang turns all of the tropes on their sides for this retelling of a new Superman character, who is an Asian male protagonist and the member of a Chinese Justice League that exists in the same universe as an American Justice League. Unlike Superman – at least the version we all know well – this version is an aggressive, hypermasculine underdog who lashes out against adversity for all of

the wrong reasons – at first. As an Asian-American, growing up without visible representation of Asians in most forms of media had a profound effect on me. Why weren’t there Asian-American actors on TV, in films I watched or the books I read? Are we not good enough? Not interesting enough? Does anyone other than us care? I started to believe that Asians weren’t cut out for protagonists in modern media, and I should accept that as a sad fact. With Yang’s “New SuperMan,” that’s different. His story doesn’t have to completely resonate with me to be impactful. He wrote the story he wanted to tell while still representing the culture well. If you want change, enable yourself to do something about it and take risks. That’s what Yang does in his Superman take. If you try to wait for the majority to offer you a seat at the table, you’ll get waitlisted. Superheroes are an ideal. Why can’t people who look like me be the ideal, too? “New Super-Man” and other stories with similarly diverse characters tell a different story. They tell children with diverse backgrounds that we too, can be super.

‘Potter’ books read by my grandmother opened up a new world

The soft, carpeted steps below my feet turned to stone with each step I took. Down into my inviting and comfortable basement I went. The longer I looked, the more it morphed into a dark corridor. The knob was gone on the door to the guest bedroom where my grandmother resided. There was a portrait of a fat woman singing opera in its place, subsequently asking for a password. “Banana Fritters,” I said as the fat lady swung the portrait open. The room was no longer a comfortable bedroom but a common room filled with chairs and couches all directed toward a beautiful and brightly lit fireplace. My grandmother sat on a couch facing the fire, book in hand, beckoning me to the spot beside her by gently tapping the empty cushion. Or at least that’s how I saw the guest bedroom in my house when my grand-

I quickly read the books in the series that were out at the time, and as anticipation grew for each new book that would come out, I would be reminded of the mornings she and I would spend curled up in bed reading. I found other books to pass the time while waiting for the new books to be published. Yet, nothing compared to the “Harry Potter” series in my mind. No other book took me to quite another world, or as deep into my own imagination. They hold a special place in my heart. Each winter, I’ll pick the first book up, sit by the fire and read through it with the same thrill it held the first time I read it.

is common among most fans of the Harry Potter books. For Cedar Springs freshman Erika Cardinal, it’s therapeutic to retreat to her favorite series whenever she’s going through

“There’s lots of instances where I’m really unsure and don’t know where my life is going. I think Harry Potter is something that is a constant. My books are a constant, my knowledge

and want to learn is a constant.” The books have also been a constant for Eric Scull, who got involved in the fandom and started working for the largest Harry Potter fansite — Mugglenet in 2002 and has since been a host on the Potter podcast, Mugglecast. “When people turn to Harry Potter like I know I do, it has a lot to do with the people who you shared the experience with, the people in the fandom, the friends I’ve made through Harry Potter,” Scull said. “There’s no stronger way to break barriers between people that I’ve found besides a shared love of Harry.” Cardinal said she connected to the books because of their mulit-faceted themes that run through the narrative — some meanings have become more apparent to her as she rereads them. Examples she gave of this were how Hermoine was called a “Mudblood,” meant to be a slur because she wasn’t considered a traditionally “pure born”

companion book to the Potter series. The author wrote the screenplay for the first film and said she plans to do the same for the rest of the movie series. This is the reason most fans feel confident the new movie will be a success. Even though Rowling is involved, Jurkiewicz pointed out that writing a book is much different than writing a screenplay. “When you read a book, the writer strings words together in a certain order and you have to read line by line, page by page,” Jurkiewicz said. “But with a movie, the director has got to string images together in a certain order to get an impact on the audience. Movies are a narrative art form, they tell stories but it has to be through pictures, which has all kinds of implications.” Despite questioning why the producers of the films have given away major plot lines to the films, Scull is optimistic about Fantastic Beasts. “It’s exciting because she’s excited about it,” Scull said. “Just how enthralled we are with her creative process I think is something all Harry Potter fans share.”

hants of “hey, hey, ho, ho hate speech has got to go” and “say it now say it clear, immigrants are welcome here,” echoed throughout campus Tuesday as about 300 students and community members marched to Warriner Hall. Taking part in the Central Michigan Action’s Stop Hate and Walkout protest, people met in front of Anspach Hall around noon to gather to protest “what comes after the election,” said Jon Arlt, an organizer of the event. “We wanted to give voice to the fear and anger people have, which is based in factual reality,” said Arlt, a fixed-term faculty member in the sociology, anthropology and social work department. “We also wanted to use this as an opportunity to thank President (George)

Ross for his words of support to students, and to urge him to work with us to make sure hate crimes don’t happen at CMU.” Central Michigan Action has “several, concrete steps” it wants to execute moving forward, Arlt said. These include keeping an eye out for hate speech and actions on campus and providing safe spaces for students to express their concerns about the political climate following the Nov. 8 presidential election. Arlt wasn’t the only faculty member present at the demonstration. Knight said this was the biggest on-campus protest she’s seen in her five years of working at the university. “(This university) fully upholds the freedom of speech,” she said. “We have an office on campus — the Office of Institutional Equity — which was created in the 70s. We were one of the first universities in the nation really dedicated to civil rights and protecting against discrimination. We’ve had a long-

Detroit sophomore Jordan Dowery said the size of the protest showed him that “people really cared about minorities” on campus. As a black man, he was angered at sexist

and racist actions going on around the country but said it was great to see not just members of the black community protest, but white allies as well. Other students of color echoed Dowery’s sentiments. “I’m out here because I’m scared for my family, friends and fellow students,” said Detroit junior Saceila Gonzalez. “(Trump) is threatening to (deport) members of my family. He’s threatening to take away my friends’ right to marriage. It’s disgusting.”

Gonzalez spent a portion of the protest speaking about her experience as a Latina in “Trump’s America.” She also passed out plastic flowers with messages of peace and harmony written on them. Former students stopped by to participate in the protest as

well. An alumna from 1975, Mount Pleasant resident Mary Irvine said she participated in anti-Vietnam War protests on campus during her time as a student. She said this level of student mobilization was “very heartening.”

“A lot of things have really been a kick in the butt,” she said. “It’s important for students to remember to not lose heart and to not give up. This shows me the beginning of the heartbeat for this movement.” Throughout the protest, Arlt reminded those in attendance to remain peaceful and to be mindful of their surroundings. He, along with several volunteers with Central Michigan Action, passed out papers which outlined how to have a successful, nonviolent protest. Some students like Kevin

Goodwin were not sold on the group’s self-proclaimed message of peace. He attended the protest because he had never been to one before. The Traverse City freshman wondered if the event was going to be as rambunctious as he had seen on TV. Standing off to the side in a “TRUMP 2016” T-shirt, Goodwin said he was embarrassed for his fellow students and community members who came to the event. “All these people out here — we call them adults — they’re just out here complaining and crying because they didn’t get their way. It’s sad to see,” he said. “They have nothing better to do than to come out and support the party that lost. It’s pointless. “The election is over and the decision has been made.”

‘Harry Potter’ study abroad course captures series magic Brianne Twiddy Features Editor news@cm-life.com

David Fitzpatrick didn’t grow up reading the “Harry Potter” books. He didn’t wait by the mailbox on his eleventh birthday waiting for a Hogwarts letter. Instead, the Grand Rapids senior read the series all in a short sitting, and then eventually re-read them. Last May, Fitzpatrick attended the third Harry Potter study abroad class. While studying the cultural phenomenon of J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” series, the course was dedicated to deconstructing the wizarding world found in the books and comparing them to today’s reality.

Courtesy Photo The spring 2016 Harry Potter-themed class poses in front of Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, England.

“(‘Harry Potter’) helped develop my curiosity. The characters are relatable and human,

despite being wizards,” Fitzpatrick said. “We can see bits of ourselves in the characters. We

can find a home in them.” For 10 days, students traveled to landmarks from the books

and movies, including Edinburgh, Oxford, London, Durham, Watford and Cambridge. Students also toured the Warner Bros. Harry Potter Studio. Yet the class isn’t a casual field trip. The moment they land in the United Kingdom, the students are constantly moving. They study the underground structures, the history of anything related to J.K Rowling, Scottish independence and the books — all activities and locations connected with the books and Rowling’s personal life. “We did a lot of hiking. It’s physically demanding, but we expected it,” said Justin Wigard, CMU alumnus and spring 2015 teaching assistant for the course. “We were advised to invest in hiking boots and com-

fortable walking shoes because we would be traveling on foot all day. They do a lot of walking in the Harry Potter series, but if we were to take taxis, we’d miss massive portions of the city we could have seen by walking.” The course is topic-driven and changes each semester. Joseph Michael Sommers, associate professor of English, said he doesn’t enter the course with a specific agenda — instead he lets the class guide itself based on what students are most interested in that semester. Sommers said he’s surprised by how serious the topics surrounding the series has been. Everything from race, cultural differences, cultural anthrow STUDY ABROAD | 22

pology and standard history have been topics of discussion, all of which later inspire the required Potter-related essay due after the study abroad trip. Grand Rapids senior David Fitzpatrick wrote about the teaching methods and styles used by different Hogwart professors. The education major said the character Dolores Umbridge — a government-assigned professor who physically punishes her students — helped him recognize what he didn’t like about her and what he would like to be as a teacher. “Literature — especially young adult literature — is extremely important to the development of a child’s curiosity and learning,” Fitzpatrick said. “As a future high school teacher, what I’m concerned about is not a lot of people seem to like reading once they become older. ‘Harry Potter’ are some of those books that make you passionate about reading, and keep that passion going.” This passion is the core reason Sommers created the class, hoping to harness the passion, and gear it toward Harry Potter to remind students “how many great books are out there.”

NOV. 17, 2016  | CENTRAL MICHIGAN LIFE  | CM-LIFE.COM

Sommers said people have scoffed at the concept of “the living and breathing history of Harry Potter,” but he argued the series is worthy of a course because as times change, interpretation of the text also changes. Sommers said when a student comes prepared with passion and vigor to take on more than what is otherwise asked of them, such as a class about the ‘Harry Potter’ series, they should be encouraged, not dissuaded. “(I tell my students that they have) read these so many times — now go read other (novels),” Sommers said. “Let literature inform you. Let it invigorate your soul. Let Harry Potter be the gateway drug to a deeper sense of passion toward, not just literature, but the human spirit.” Sommers said while there will not be a course held this spring, the next time it’s held will be “completely different,” including the stops made on the trips. “People get tired by the end. It’s work. It’s physically enduring, it’s cognitively enduring. They’re on this thing they’ve always wanted to do, but it’s a lot of their first times being away,” Sommers said. “I like to think of the class as a transition into greater study abroad studies. It’s my hope. If I could impress anything upon those students — it’s how important it is to study abroad.”

You Too Can Make a Difference:

Rescue and Rescuers During the Holocaust Presented by Debórah Dwork Faced with manhunts, deportations, and horrifying rumors about “unknown destinations” to which Jews were shipped, underground groups throughout Europe simply sprang up, created by people who felt the need to act. How did these local, grassroots actions develop? Who participated? And what do they tell us about European society during the war? Dr. Dwork is the Rose Professor of Holocaust History, and Founding Director of the Strassler Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies at Clark University. One of the first historians to record Holocaust survivors’ oral histories and to use their narratives as a scholarly source, Dwork explores the social and cultural history of the Holocaust.

Quidditch creates competitive community beyond Potter By Kate Carlson Managing Editor

This is either a PVC pipe, wood rod or some other broom like object and serves as a handicap to add difficulty to the sport. “It’s definitely fun to play. People make assumptions of it a little too early,” Wier said. “If you give it a chance, get familiar with the rules and watch a few games, it’s fun.” Another cornerstone of the sport is that a player from each team, called a seeker, joins the game 18 minutes in to try to catch a player called the snitch. The snitch is a neutral third party player that seekers have to pull a flagfootball like golden “tail” off of in order to earn 30 points and end the game. “I know Rowling has stated she purposefully wrote Quidditch to be ridiculous,” Wier said. “In our sport, (the snitch) is worth 40 points instead of

Three chasers on each team can score 10 points each time they throw a volleyball into one of the other team’s three hoops — guarded by a keeper or goalie. In addition, two people on each team are “beaters” who throw dodgeballs at players, who must drop a volleyball and touch the rings once hit. The club team at CMU puts in four practices a week and competes almost every weekend, which requires traveling long distances and sometimes venturing out of state to play. Being aware of where her players are when she’s on the field is one of the most essential parts of playing chaser, explained CMU alumna Morgan Bethann. They don’t fly on broomsticks, but there is still a competitive Quidditch club team at Central Michigan University. Quidditch is a sport in J.K. Rowling’s “Harry Potter” books where people fly on broomsticks and score points by throwing balls into hoops. Even though the sport is based in Rowling’s fantasy creation, universities around the country adapted the sport so muggles can play it too. The club team at CMU became an official club sport in 2012 and has 40 active members this year. Every year, CMU has made it to the regional and national competitions. Most outsiders have misconceptions of Quidditch, which is a hybrid of rugby, dodgeball and handball, said David Wier, the team co-captain. The muggle version of the sport is full contact and more competitive than most newcomers realize, explained the Muskegon graduate student. “There are two people who play Quidditch,” Wier said. “There are people who are athletic and like sports, and the people who really just like Harry Potter. I think they both have a place in our sport, but to be taken seriously I definitely

She said she is grateful she joined the team because of the sense of community. “I was anxious about being good enough and making friends with people I don’t know, but everyone was very accepting and it’s the best thing I’ve done in the last year,” she said. Canton sophomore Morgan Crawford plays beater and is grateful she joined the club team even though she wasn’t expecting the intensity of the sport to be so high. “I honestly was not expecting the amount of times you get knocked on the floor,” Crawford said. “I knew it was full contact but wasn’t expecting people to charge me.”

Looking back at the birth of the Harry Potter fandom By Kate Carlson Managing Editor news@cm-life.com

After being introduced to the Harry Potter fandom when he saw the first film with his friend, Eric Scull is still deeply involved with the series. Scull, 28, is one of the podcast hosts of "Mugglecast," a podcast for Potter fans. Scull was introduced to the podcast while being a contributor to the most popular Harry Potter fan website — Mugglenet. Central Michigan Life had a conversation with Scull about how the franchise and fandom have grown over the years leading up to the premiere of “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them,” which will be released Nov. 17.

CM LIFE: How did you get introduced to Harry Potter? SCULL: I got into the (Harry Potter) fandom after the first movie was out. I recall seeing the film with a buddy of mine. (Harry Potter) really connected with me but it wasn’t until some months later that I remembered how amazing the world was. It was June of 2002 or so and I was getting really into it and I had to borrow the first couple of books from some of my friends.

contributing to Mugglenet). So there was a huge growth period before the fifth Harry Potter book came out in 2003

and the sixth Harry Potter book came out in 2005. All those years that occurred I was working on Mugglenet before Mugglecast.

“Harry potter, the way that it was written, not only inspired young minds, but was accessible and enjoyable for all ages.” ERIC SCULL

HOST OF MUGGLECAST

(Mugglecast) grew within the first 10 episodes into a conversation with your friends who happen to be the biggest Harry Potter fans on the planet. It was just sort of an idea that grew from discussing (Potter) news into a forum for fans to chat with us (and) to chat with each other about Harry Potter.

When did the Mugglecast podcast start? The podcast didn’t happen until 2005, three years later (after I started

Why do you think the Harry Potter franchise has had such a huge impact on people? You have a combination of

things, the birth of internet, the subsequent birth of social media sites and fan sites in general in the late 90s that were starting. All of this was happening all at once. Harry Potter was coming into the mainstream at a time where children did not read, reading was at an all time low. There had not really been anything fresh. Nobody was really making any headway or impact in a strong way that would influence a whole generation. w FANDOM | 28

Harry potter, the way that it was written, not only inspired young minds, but was accessible and enjoyable for all ages. I think it wasn’t just the first good book in a really long time for kids. It was a good enough for everybody and it is one of the best works of fiction ever concocted because of how multifaceted all of the characters are. You have a tremendously gifted author producing amazing content right at the cusp of an entire new movement and way of interacting with each other. What are some of the core messages in the books that you connect with the most? My favorite book is the third one, “Prizoner of Azkaban." I

think part of that is the big reveal; because you go most of the book believing Sirius Black is a bad guy, and it turns out he’s just sort of like Snape in the first book where he’s just misunderstood. But he ends up presenting Harry, this orphan, with just this love and support that he never knew he had A lot of people find value in rereading the series because it serves as a constant in their life, is this something you do? Immediately when people turn to Harry Potter like I know I do, it has a lot to do with the people who shared the experience with, the people in the fandom, the friends I’ve made through Harry Potter. There’s no breaking of barriers between people that I’ve found besides a shared love of Harry. Do you have any expectations for the new “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” movie?

Courtesy Photo Actors portraying characters Harry, Ron and Hermione escape from Gringotts Wizarding Bank on a dragon in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2".

I think it’s pretty clear that Newt Scamander will play a role, but the five films will end up being about the conflict around the time of World War II and 1945 with Grindelwald and Dumbledore.

I think it’s pretty fair to say based on what we already know that Grindelwald will probably be the series main villain. These are going to be action films just like the other films. It’s got such a good

creative team behind it and so much money behind it that I think quality the bar is set pretty high and it will ultimately end up being a very entertaining series if nothing else.
