PRESIDENT’S REPORT
Michael Free Welcome to the winter 2022 edition of our magazine. A lot has been happening at the club over the past couple of months and I’d like to update members on a number of current activities. Works are now almost complete on the new Thurlow St façade after significant hold up due to the supply of materials and the rotten weather over the last few months.
Club Rivers recent donations included a $25,000 to Disaster Relief Australia. DRA deploys a veteran-led volunteer workforce and on this occasion, to Queensland and New South Wales in response to the recent major flood event. Working alongside locals, DRA’s skilled veteran volunteers provide hands-on help including mould treatment, debris removal, rubbish removal, clearing key access points and general clean-up. We are very proud to be able to continue to provide a safe and family friendly social environment for all our members and guests, and that’s what community clubs are all about! Looking forward to catching-up with you at the Club very soon.
Building has now also commenced on a new TAB & Sports Bar on the ground floor complete with a new bar and extended seating areas. The new TAB area should be completed mid year. Our new caterer Mike’s Grill at Club Rivers has proved to be very popular with the locals. The menu choices are numerous and I doubt if there is anyone’s palate that cannot be satisfied. Having already tried a number of the new meals, I can thoroughly recommend the menu to members. I am certain you will not be disappointed. We were very proud to see the return of our full Anzac Day celebrations for the first time since 2019, after COVID restrictions on numbers prevented us from holding our annual event. The event provides a moment to pause and reflect on how our defence force personnel have upheld the values and the legacy created on April 25,1915.

ANZAC DAY 2022 After our ANZAC ceremonies were cancelled or scaled down due to COVID-19, this year we saw a return to communities coming together as traditional ANZAC Day commemorations were celebrated at Club Rivers. April 25th is one of Australia’s most important national occasions, marking the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. We would like to thank all those who observed commemorations in whichever method they chose to pay their respects. OUT & AB UT Georges River Life Care is actively trying to create awareness and provide solutions in our local area; playing a vital role in providing services that will assist victims and help ease the destruction that Domestic Violence causes to families in our community. The annual Sleeping Rough fundraising event took place on Thursday 15 April. Sleeping Rough invited participants to “do it tough for a night”, giving up the comforts of home, whilst asking friends and families to sponsor them to raise money that will to go towards services such as Case Management, Free legal support, Emergency Relief, Food Hampers and much more.
Intense rains have inundated Queensland and New South Wales during March 2022. Tragically, 12 lives have been lost, many are still missing and the destruction from rising waters has impacted more than 500,000 peoples’ lives. This is a one in 100 hundred year event. The abrupt and uncertain rainfall has devastated Australian communities and they need help. Club Rivers donated $25,000 to assist Disaster Relief Australia an organisation led by Veterans to put teams of volunteers on the ground quickly to assist in the clean up through these incredibly challenging conditions. DRA improves veterans’ well being by providing them the opportunity to continue to serve communities devastated by natural disaster. In doing so, they are able to regain a sense of purpose and identity not found since their military service. DRA recognises that veterans hold a unique and valuable skill set. Australian veterans are a national asset, and DRA seeks to showcase that to the world.
SUPERTEE IS THE KEY PROJECT OF FAIR FIGHT FOUNDATION LTD. Supertees are a medical garment provided free to Australia’s sickest and bravest children as they embark on the toughest fight of their lives. The garment aims to alleviate their suffering and distress through distraction, comfort, and the wonders of imaginative play. Club Rivers donated $10 000 to the Fairfight Foundation in support of the Supertee Project that will inspire 200 children at St George Hospital throughout their hospital journey. The Supertees are fun and highly functional medical garment given to individuals facing life-threatening conditions, however, due to high demand, resupply is a constant challenge.

Years ago, at the beach, I was only about 5 meters out, still touching the bottom and I got dumped a few times in a row. I must have been flayling around quite a lot and was rescued by a bunch of 10 year old Nippers, who insisted in taking me all the way to the shore line in front of my friends and family. What is something most people don’t know about you? I did highland dancing when I was younger and can to the Highland Fling and the Swords Dance, just ask me, I’ll show you.
Life Membership awarded to Paul Reeves at the Annual General Meeting. Paul Reeves received the highest of honours at this year’s annual general meeting. Paul has enjoyed long and outstanding service to the club both as board member since 2006 and as a long-term Club member, joining in 1978. It was President Michael Free’s pleasure to present the honours to Paul. He said: “We don’t take life membership lightly which shows the esteem the club holds in Paul and we thank him for his loyal service. “ “Paul has held a number of positions on the board including chairman of the sports council and a member of the Risk and ClubGrant Committees. “He has been a great supporter of local sport and is also a life member of both St George District Junior Rugby League and St George Junior Athletics.” Paul has supported the club for many years and we wish him and his family all the best in the future.
