Sean Munger Shares Details About Publishing At Wednesday’s meeting we were treated to a fascinating presentation by Sean regarding the process of writing and publishing a book. He is an Indie publisher, which means that the book is independently published. This book took him 30 years to write, starting as a short story in college. He gave it a bit of a “retro” feel, channeling from the 1960s Star Trek shows. He commented that, with science fiction, 1/3 of the book is the story and 2/3 is world-building. He talked about Indie publishing vs. traditional publishing and indicated that very few authors nowadays publish via a traditional publishing house. He cited the Amazon Digital Direct Publishing guide as a useful source of help, although he commented that there are other helpful sources out there. Potluck to Honor our It was inspiring to hear the students talk about their past Key Club experiences and their plans for the future.
It was a productive day in the “cold room” on Friday, July 31st This was the “morning” group who helped at the Sunday Parkways event in NE Portland. Jaclynn was there in the afternoon. The six members added a much needed $180 to the club account!
• Our own Norm Gholston presented the program at last Monday’s Division Council Meeting. He shared details about the Slabtown Friendly House, which our Slabtown satellite club supports. Friendly House sponsors a pre-school, has after-school programs and summer camps, has a gym and pickle ball equipment, holds classes and events for all ages, provides food assistance and transportation services and has a book club that the Slabtown Kiwanis operates.

So far, George, Sue and Jaclynn have managed to raise almost $300 for the club account by showing up to help Hillsboro with their Tuesday Night Markets. There are only 2 slots left on August 18th, and 1 on the 25th, plus 1 on September 1st. It’s a relaxing evening, with good music to enjoy. HERE is the link. • Come to our evening meeting on Wednesday, August 12th. It will be at the Dragonfly Asian Bistro starting at 6:15 p.m. Our presenter for the evening will be our own Anthony Arakaki who will share information about his summer trip with his son, Mateu, to Germany. Apparently, the basic theme of the trip was “fast cars”.
• Four of our members are very excited to be traveling to Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp on Friday, August 14th. Once they get there, the plan is for them to help serve dinner to the campers before their evening program at the campfire. Then they will get to watch the camp finale fun!
