Community Warehouse
It was a fun service project held at the Community Warehouse. Before we were put to work sorting linens, it was explained that as much as 60-70% of donated items in that category are “recycled” for other purposes. Only “dignity condition” linens are considered acceptable, meaning they must be clean, not worn looking and with no fuzzies or pet hair. Unfortunately, only about 3040% of the donated linens fit that criteria? We found out a lot of information about the Community Warehouse. A low estimate of what it might take to furnish a new home with the bare minimum is $5000. Families pay a fee of $150 to come into the warehouse and pick out whatever they might need. If they require moving van assistance, they can pay another $250. There is everything in the warehouse from sofas, to chairs, to desks and accessories, to dining room furniture and kitchen appliances, to rugs and linens, and more. If you wish to donate items and need moving help, there is a $50 fee. They are open Tuesday through Saturday for “shoppers”. Most of the linen items that we were sorting were probably off the shelves in 2-24 hours after the store opened on Tuesday!

• Chair Affair - Every year, they get together for an event they call the “Chair Affair” and it is fast approaching - Thursday, April 23rd at 631 NE Grand Ave, Portland, 5 – 7:30 p.m. This event features children's chairs local artists have created and decorated that will be offered to their younger clients as something just for them. They are looking for volunteers to help them present a wonderful evening with roles such as Registration Packet Puller, Greeter/Prize Giver, and helping with one of their scavenger hunt activities.

• If you couldn’t attend the April 1st meeting, you missed out on a fascinating presentation from our own John Brookens, talking about his trip to Antarctica. He shared that no environmental contamination is allowed, with boat passengers undergoing routine contamination procedures. It took 9 days by sea, from the tip of South America, to reach the continent.
• Antarctica is the 5th largest continent in the world. There are no land mammals at all. The trip itinerary was often changed to accommodate the weather conditions; and they went through several time zones as they traveled there. They saw penguins, and more penguins, including one place with 100,000 of them dotting the landscape! To get from the boat to land they often used zodiacs which quickly became ice encrusted. Of course, the highlight for us was seeing a video of John plunging, headfirst into 26-degree water!

We are the HOST club at Monday night’s Division Council Meeting. We oversee the program, refreshments and the raffle prize. • Stay tuned for information about a Key Club District Convention RECAP event. The original date of Monday, May 13th is being postponed due to the interference of Spring sports. A new date will be set and announced as soon as it is determined.

On Wednesday, April 15th we will be holding our last meeting of the month. It will be at Murrayhill Taphouse. At the meeting, members will be voting on whether to reduce the number of our club Directors from 5 to 3. You may also vote via email, if you can’t be present at the meeting. A ballot will be sent in advance, but please remember that votes must be emailed back to Sue by no later than midnight on April 14th . Our speaker that meeting will be Melissa Endicott, Market Manager, Tigard Farmers Market.

• The 3rd Wednesday of EVERY month the Beach Hut Deli opens their side room to hold a Bingo Night in support of the Foundation for the TigardTualatin Schools. You can show up for an evening of camaraderie and fun. If you wish, you can order some food, order a drink, and then buy 6 bingo cards for $16.00. Start time is 6:00 p.m. Many show up earlier to place meal orders. The address is 12438 SW Main St., Tigard.
