MR WILL PHELAN, HEAD Welcome to Clifton High School Clifton High School provides more than an education: it forms a defining chapter in our pupils’ lives, where we create an environment for them to belong, feel safe and be inspired to achieve their potential. Our holistic approach is central to our School, and we believe that by nurturing personal growth, identity and confidence, we help children become happy, engaged and motivated learners. Our all-through School is large enough to offer a rich breadth of academic, sporting, creative and enrichment opportunities, yet small enough to genuinely know and care for every pupil. From the Early Years through to Sixth Form, what children achieve, both within and beyond the traditional classroom setting, is reflected in their academic outcomes and the value added we offer. ABOUT OUR SCHOOL Welcome to Clifton High School, an independent, co-educational school for children aged 3 to 18 years, situated in the heart of Clifton Village, Bristol. Established in 1877, we have been a leader in education for almost 150 years. From our beginnings as a girls’ school to the co-educational school we are today, Clifton High has always embraced change, shown initiative and a willingness to adapt and evolve. This spirit of innovation remains central to who we are, ensuring our pupils are prepared for a world they will help to shape. At the heart of our education is a commitment to ‘realising individual brilliance’. We recognise every pupil as an individual, taking the time to understand their strengths, interests and passions and provide the support that encourages them to strive and thrive. Our small class sizes, capped at between 16-18 in The Hive and Infant School and 20 from Year 3 upwards, enable teachers to know their pupils and respond to their individual needs. Alongside our bespoke curriculum, this creates an environment where children can develop confidence, independence and a love of learning without unnecessary pressure. This approach also enables pupils and students to achieve excellent GCSE and A level outcomes, whilst recognising the importance of value-added progress. Ambition is encouraged across all areas of School life, where children discover what they are capable of from an early age, developing the confidence to pursue their own level of success with the resilience to meet challenges, should they arise. Our extensive Enrichment Programme provides opportunities to explore interests beyond the classroom. From adventure pursuits, co-curricular clubs and societies, the Duke of Edinburgh Award, outreach charities, performing arts and sports, pupils are encouraged to make the most of our offerings. The experiences develop life skills, leadership, teamwork and the confidence to help themselves and others; true community contributions. Pastoral Care Pastoral care is integral to an education at Clifton High School. We believe children are happier when they feel safe, valued, understood and genuinely part of a community that builds cultural values. To support this ethos, our well-established pastoral structures, alongside robust safeguarding measures, provide the foundations for children to develop with confidence, resilience and a strong sense of self. ‘Realising Individual Brilliance’ is central to our core pastoral approach whereby teachers know and understand each child as an individual: their character, interests, strengths and aspirations. This allows them to build long-lasting, trusting relationships that support both personal and academic development. Small class sizes throughout the whole School mean pupils are supported in mixed year groups of no more than 16-18 in the Infant and Junior School and 20 children in the Senior School; with two dedicated form tutors also providing one-to-one pastoral guidance. Class Teachers, Heads of Year and the Senior Deputy Head: Pastoral work closely with all pupils, ensuring that pastoral care and academic progress remain closely connected. Our pupils have access to a dedicated team of School Nurses, a Mental Health Lead and Wellbeing Counsellor, alongside specialist support from our Enhanced Learning Department (ELD) where additional academic guidance is required. In the Early Years, our Wellbeing Counsellor and Play Therapist provide further support when younger children experience challenges that may affect their emotional wellbeing and personal development. Across the School, children are encouraged to talk openly about their feelings, relationships and experiences, knowing that asking for help is an important part of growing in confidence and independence. Pastoral care is woven throughout the curriculum in all year groups with weekly Personal, Social, Health and Economic (PSHE) lessons led by class teachers in the Infant and Junior School and Form Tutors in the Senior School. Topics address a wide spectrum of age-relevant topics for children to be exposed to and learn from.

Our Community Belonging at Clifton High School extends beyond the individual child to their family and the wider community. We believe the best outcomes for our pupils are achieved when we work together in a culture built on openness, trust and mutual respect. From the earliest years through to the Sixth Form, we value the relationships between pupils, families and staff, creating an environment in which everyone feels known, welcomed and valued. Regular communication, including Parents’ Evenings, written reports and opportunities to meet with teachers, keeps families informed about their child’s academic progress, personal development and wellbeing. Just as importantly, we create opportunities for parents and families to come together, connect, feed back through Focus Groups and enjoy being part of School life. Our calendar is rich with occasions that unite the community, from performances, concerts, Sports Days, prizegiving celebrations and events that recognise our diverse backgrounds and traditions. Our annual School Ball is a much-anticipated evening for parents of Sixth Form leavers, students and staff to socialise and celebrate together, while Foundation events, including Rosarian matches and our Grandparents’ Tea Party, strengthen the connections between generations. Whole-School traditions also play an important role in building our community culture. Our House system brings pupils from all year groups together, developing friendship and a true sense of belonging as they participate in House Music, Sports Day and House Challenge Day. These shared experiences encourage pupils to support one another, celebrate collective achievement and understand the importance of contributing to something greater than themselves. Our sense of community extends beyond the School gates. Pupils are encouraged to look outward, recognising that belonging brings responsibility. Through charitable initiatives, fundraising, environmental projects and campaigns supporting local, social and economic causes, pupils develop empathy, compassion and an increasing awareness of their role within the wider world. In 2026, this commitment took an exciting step forward with the creation of Pembroke Education, a group founded by Clifton High School and The Downs Preparatory School. Pembroke Education brings together two distinctive schools with a shared belief that children thrive when they are given the confidence, opportunities and experiences to discover who they are and what they can achieve. For Clifton High, this creates new possibilities for collaboration, innovation and enrichment, while protecting what makes our School unique. Clifton High School remains an independent school with its own identity, values, leadership and community. Pembroke Education strengthens us through collaboration without compromising the character and individuality that have defined Clifton High since 1877. Our pupils continue to enjoy the close-knit, personal education for which we are known, while benefiting from the expertise, resources and opportunities that collaboration can provide. Sports Collaboration Sport is an important part of life at Clifton High, from encouraging participation and enjoyment to supporting pupils who aspire to perform at the highest level. Pembroke Education creates opportunities to strengthen this provision by sharing facilities, expertise and staffing where it benefits our pupils. The development of sporting facilities at The Downs site has been identified and plans are underway to create further opportunities for pupils to try new sports, develop their skills, participate, compete in more school and group activities and enjoy the many benefits of being active. For talented athletes, collaboration also creates the potential for broader specialist opportunities, while our existing sporting pathways continue to support pupils in developing individual strengths and ambitions. 12

A Pioneering Commitment to Outdoor Education Pembroke Education’s investment in outdoor and adventurous activities recognises the value in allowing pupils to develop practical skills, resilience, independence and leadership through progressive outdoor experiences. A particular feature of this is The Pembroke Award, a bespoke programme created for pupils from Years 3 to 8. Built around the three strands of Nature, Exploration and Bushcraft, the programme encourages curiosity, teamwork, organisation and self-reliance through increasingly challenging experiences. Pupils work towards bronze, silver and gold achievement levels, developing practical skills and confidence while building a lifelong appreciation of the natural world. The programme culminates in the internal accreditation of The Pembroke Award, recognising each pupil’s achievement and the transferable skills they have developed along the way. From Year 9, pupils can progress to the Duke of Edinburgh Award, providing a natural continuation of outdoor learning, personal challenge, volunteering and leadership.

Entry Pathways Pembroke Education provides a natural pathway between its schools, including an opportunity for pupils to move from The Downs Preparatory School to Clifton High School at Year 9. Importantly, this is neither an expectation nor requirement as we recognise that every child and family is different, and the right school is the one that best meets an individual child’s needs, character and aspirations. For those who do choose Clifton High, our all-through approach provides continuity, familiarity and a carefully considered transition into the Senior School.

Innovation and Future Skills Being forward-thinking is part of Clifton High’s character. Pembroke Education allows us to build on this tradition by sharing ideas, exploring new approaches and preparing pupils for a rapidly changing world. Our teachers recognise the uniqueness of every child and carefully tailor learning experiences to ensure all pupils feel challenged and supported. The Hive Curriculum The Hive Pre-School nurtures children in a wellbeing-focused environment. Even at this early stage of learning, we believe children benefit from being taught by qualified teachers. Working alongside experienced Early Years specialists, they help to create a supportive environment and meaningful opportunities for every child. This first-class, intuitive teaching ensures every child transitions to Reception with confidence, an inquisitive nature and an excitement for learning. The Hive follows the latest Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, which places a strong emphasis on exploration, investigation, discovery and problem-solving. During this first stage of learning, our experienced teaching staff primarily observe children as they play. They consider their interactions with activities, ask them appropriate, thought-provoking questions and encourage deeper thinking skills. Linking these components helps teachers to adopt a pedagogy which, in turn, creates bespoke learning opportunities to develop and challenge an enquiring mind. We communicate closely with parents, keeping them involved in their child’s day-to-day pre-School life. Through Tapestry, our secure online learning platform, families can follow, support and contribute to their child’s learning as well as be involved in class assemblies, performances and whole School community events. Our Holistic Approach in The Hive

THE HIVE

Our holistic approach begins with knowing each child as an individual. Small class sizes and dedicated time allow our compassionate teaching staff to build strong, trusting relationships, nurturing children’s emotional, social and physical development alongside their early learning. Through careful observation and responsive teaching, staff track each child’s progress, interests and emerging strengths, ensuring activities and experiences are thoughtfully tailored to their individual needs. The Hive provides a safe and happy environment, which is vital to a child’s wellbeing and learning development, particularly at this young age. Not only do they feel secure, but their strong sense of belonging allows them to see themselves as valued members and contributors of their peer group. No stone is left unturned when it comes to understanding and supporting each child. We work closely with parents to identify individual needs, including speech and language development, and carefully monitor progress over time. Where additional support is beneficial, our experienced Enhanced Learning Department (ELD) provides a further layer of expertise, working collaboratively with families and teachers to deliver bespoke programmes tailored to individual needs. Our qualified teachers and teaching assistants work in an environment of mutual respect, collaboration and understanding, with a shared commitment to providing the highest quality care and education. We help children develop the foundations they need to gain security and confidence. This strong sense of self allows for a positive transition from The Hive into the Infant School.

Provision Options

The Hive welcomes children after their third birthday, with families opting for either a year-round or term-time only provision. We are open from 8.00am-6.00pm with all meals and snacks provided during the day and included in the School fees.

THE HIVE

The Hive’s space for learning is a safe and gated environment that is accessed through its own dedicated entrance. This allows our youngest learners and their parents to feel the warmth of a nurturing community in a smaller School setting appropriate to their age. Whilst children’s learning is primarily play-focused at this stage, the Hive teaching team supports and encourages a sense of adventure in both indoor and outdoor exploratory areas. These include a safe and sustainably designed playground, planting areas, innovative learning spaces, spacious and light classrooms and multiple green areas throughout the School site. Children also use our on-site swimming pool, tennis courts, junior library, theatre and music spaces.

Sport in The Hive Sport in the Hive marks the beginning of children’s sporting journey at Clifton High School. We introduce our ‘Sport for All’ ethos through movement and active play, creating an inclusive, positive and social environment in which children can develop confidence and enjoyment. Specialist teachers lead games lessons that are embedded within the weekly curriculum. Children are also introduced to both our Swimming and Tennis programmes at this early stage, developing the fundamental skills associated with these sports. Alongside this, children enjoy the experience of movement, balance and self-expression through yoga and dance sessions delivered by experienced professional instructors. The Hive children’s first experience of competition is combined with a celebration of participation and community values at our annual Sports Day. It brings together families, teaching staff and pupils from other year groups to enjoy events that unite the children in fun races and activities. 19

The Hive Adventure Programme THE HIVE

Clifton High School believes that the outdoor classroom, especially in rural settings, is integral to complementing conventional classroom skills. Our bespoke Adventure Programme broadens an appreciation of the natural world for pupils to embrace challenges that help develop environmental awareness, survival skills, self-confidence, resilience and teamwork. To offer a bespoke experience, we affiliate with Forestry England, Belmont Estate and Farmlink so children participate in a well curated outdoor education experience. Infant School children attend weekly, timetabled lessons that include: • The Forest School Programme, which is progressive and led by teachers who engage children in off-site outdoor activities. We have strong links to Forestry England and Belmont Estate, both of which offer Clifton High School pupils strong connections to the natural world. • Farm visits expose children to animal and crop farming. Belmont Estate hosts our children in trips that help them delve into educational programs centred around rewilding, sustainability, conservation and the wonders of nature. Embracing sustainability as a core principle, our Adventure Programme aims to minimise transport, eliminate packaging and reduce paper waste, ensuring a responsible and impactful approach to learning.

By carefully observing each child’s interests, strengths and individual learning style, we create opportunities that inspire curiosity, encourage deeper thinking and help every child make excellent progress. A balance of child-led discovery and purposeful teaching lays strong foundations for future learning while preserving the joy and wonder that makes childhood so special. Children benefit from an enriching curriculum led by qualified teachers that extends far beyond the classroom. They enjoy weekly on-site swimming lessons, outdoor adventure through Forest School experiences and benefit from their own playground area that brings new possibilities to explore, create and grow. Whether developing new skills, building friendships or gaining confidence through these experiences, children are encouraged to embrace challenges and celebrate their own and others’ achievements. Infant Curriculum The Infant School is the official start of a child’s academic journey. The changes and progress made throughout these pivotal years lay the integral foundations for both personal and educational development. Clifton High School’s curriculum places a strong emphasis on exploration, investigation, discovery and problemsolving and is reinforced through our Adventure Programme and regular community-driven trips, visits and guest speakers. Infant children seamlessly transition from The Hive, or other external nursery settings, into Reception and instinctively thrive. Given the time, care and support needed to settle into the Infant School, they naturally develop greater independence, form strong friendships and experience a genuine sense of happiness and belonging. Alongside this, we see growing confidence in reading, writing and the development of early mathematical understanding. Our bespoke curriculum encourages a pupil-centred, responsive approach to learning, offering a range of subjects and opportunities that are designed with individual needs and interests in mind. Continuous provision remains a key part of the way children learn in Reception. Children progress, achieve and participate in focused and semi-structured lessons to prepare them for what awaits in Years 1 and 2. The Infant School follows a two-week timetable that creates and establishes a routine and schedule that is reflective of their future academic years. We believe that by equipping children with a love for learning and confidence in knowledge, there is no ceiling to their accomplishments. Our Infant School’s class sizes are between 16 to 18 children. A highly qualified and experienced teaching body observes children’s interactions with activities to encourage the expansion of deeper thinking skills and create stimulating learning opportunities that develop and challenge an enquiring mind. Our Holistic Approach in the Infant School INFANT SCHOOL

The Infant School combines excellent pastoral care alongside academic teaching to reinforce a sense of security, so Infant School children feel they are valued as members of our School community. We are committed to promoting a high level of adult supervision in the Infant School and welcome Senior School pupils to visit the children, reading with them on a weekly basis. This is the basis for strengthening and stimulating camaraderie throughout the year groups. Our holistic and wellbeing approach to education at Clifton High School extends from our young learners to their families. Teachers and teaching assistants welcome the input and interaction of parents, valuing their involvement in the dynamics of our Infant School community. We welcome parents to visit our children to speak about their careers, cultures and interests. Regular written reports, meetings and an open-door approach ensure that any issues with a child’s welfare or academic progress are quickly realised. We recognise and celebrate all children’s achievements, identifying individual provisions. If we feel academic and/or pastoral progress is not on target, we connect with parents to identify the areas that may require careful consideration. If required our experienced Enhanced Learning Department (ELD) creates a bespoke learning programme.

Our Infant School Facilities While Infant School children share and enjoy the whole School environment as a space for their learning, they enter through their own dedicated entrance, helping to maintain the feel of a smaller School setting as they grow in independence and confidence. It also enables parents to feel connected to the Infant School community, maintain open communication with teaching staff and build relationships with other families at drop-off and pick-up times. Children enjoy their own playground, garden area, innovative equipment, spacious and light classrooms within historic buildings and the green spaces surrounding the School. At Clifton High School, we recognise that the Senior School years bring significant changes as pupils grow in confidence, independence and self-awareness. Throughout this important stage of adolescence, we place a strong emphasis on ensuring every pupil feels safe, supported and understood. Our pupil-centred approach is underpinned by strong relationships between pupils and their Form Tutors, who play a pivotal role in the Senior School experience. Working closely with subject teachers, Form Tutors develop a genuine understanding of each individual, enabling them to offer thoughtful guidance, encouragement and challenge, both academically and beyond the curriculum. Pupils meet in small tutor groups, supported by two tutors, offering a 10:1 ratio, with open lines of communication. Fortnightly one-to-one sessions provide dedicated time to discuss progress, wellbeing and any other concerns. This pastoral approach is responsive to the distinct needs of Senior School pupils, ensuring that the right guidance is provided at each stage of their development. Regular communication with parents through reports, meetings and our opendoor approach further strengthens the partnership between home and School, ensuring every pupil has the support they need to thrive, listen to different perspectives, express their own views respectfully and develop an increasing awareness of themselves and the world around them.

Additional Learning Support At Clifton High School, we recognise that every pupil learns differently and that, at times, additional support can make a significant difference to confidence, progress and achievement. Our Enhanced Learning Department (ELD) provides expert, personalised support through one-to-one and small-group teaching for pupils with additional learning needs, including dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia, as well as for pupils who are developing their English as an Additional Language (EAL).

Led by the Head of Enhanced Learning and supported by a team of specialist teachers, including specialist-trained Dyslexia and Dyscalculia teachers, an EAL Teaching and Learning Coordinator and an EAL Tutor, the ELD works closely with pupils, teachers and families to understand individual needs and provide appropriate strategies and interventions. For pupils requiring additional support with English, an initial assessment helps identify their specific needs, after which tailored weekly or twice-weekly lessons may be provided. These sessions develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, alongside relevant curriculum content, and progress is carefully monitored over time.

English as a Additional Language We celebrate the linguistic and cultural diversity that our pupils bring to Clifton High, encouraging them to value their home languages while developing the confidence and fluency they need to thrive academically and socially. Through responsive, specialist support, the ELD helps every pupil access the curriculum, recognise their strengths and become an increasingly confident and independent learner.

Facilities Classrooms are modern, bright and equipped with advanced technology and educational resources, with the Classroom of the Future programme rolling out across the Senior School. As part of this initiative, several classrooms have already been redesigned to include modular furniture arrangements, projectors, interactive wall displays as well as casting that allows the teacher the flexibility to deliver presentations from anywhere in the room. OUR SPORTS PROGRAMME We believe sport should bring energy and a strong sense of belonging for our pupils. They develop confidence, teamwork, communication, resilience and personal direction through our ‘Sport for All’ ethos, which ensures every pupil can enjoy physical activity, regardless of ability or experience, and that their participation is valued, whether it is for competition or fun. From the earliest years through to the Sixth Form, our sports provision offers carefully structured progression, specialist teaching, excellent facilities and opportunities for pupils to discover and develop their individual sporting strengths. We are ambitious in our plans, growing sporting opportunities with local partnerships including Bristol Sport and The University of Bristol as well as our own Tennis Programme that propels sport to the next level. Our Pembroke Education group enables our School to offer enhanced sporting opportunities, with the ambition to increase pupil participation, enjoyment and excellence in sport. By linking facilities, expertise, and staffing where they add value, pupils can benefit from wider opportunities to explore new sports, develop teamwork through joint training sessions, attend festivals and fixtures, and pursue personal goals. INFANT SCHOOL SPORT Sport in the Infant School (Reception-Year 2) builds naturally on the foundations established in The Hive. Through Physical Education, Games and Swimming, pupils experience structured progression while continuing to benefit from our inclusive ‘Sport for All’ approach.

Physical Education (PE) Children receive weekly, curriculum-based PE lessons taught by specialist teachers. Lessons develop fundamental movement patterns, balance, agility and broad physical literacy, establishing the foundations for confidence, resilience, problem-solving and enjoyment. These skills provide an important foundation for pupils’ continued sporting development. Children make use of our on-site facilities, including the gymnasium, climbing wall, outdoor MUGA, studio spaces and the Astroturf School Lawn.

For Games, in Year 2 upwards, children travel to Coombe Dingle, our off-site sports facility, where professional pitches and surfaces provide the space and environment to develop their tactical understanding of the termly sports. Swimming lessons in our on-site 25 metre pool take place on a weekly basis, providing all Infant School children with the opportunity to access our Learn to Swim programme. JUNIOR SCHOOL SPORT The Junior School sports programme builds on the movement, physical literacy and sporting skills developed in the Infant School. Pupils continue to benefit from structured progression across Physical Education, Games and Swimming, underpinned by our inclusive ‘Sport for All’ ethos.

Physical Education (PE) Weekly, curriculum-based PE lessons are delivered by specialist teachers and continue to develop pupils’ fundamental movement skills and broader physical literacy. Through PE, pupils build confidence, resilience and enjoyment, creating strong foundations for their continued sporting development and future GCSE and A level pathways. Our on-site facilities include the gymnasium, climbing wall, outdoor MUGA, studio spaces and the Astroturf School Lawn.

Games Lessons Games lessons are timetabled as double lessons, giving pupils sufficient time to develop their skills and experience the termly team sports played at Clifton High School. Pupils are placed into development and performance groups, allowing those who wish to pursue a competitive sporting pathway to progress while maintaining an inclusive experience for all.

Infant School Swimming Programme The Learn to Swim programme forms a major part of the Infant School sports provision. It teaches water safety, technique development and early race skills. Our on-site swimming pool gives children access to structured lessons that teach confidence and excellence, helping us to deliberately keep them ahead of national expectations. We prime our Infant School children during their swimming lessons, to progress to the Bristol Henleaze Swimming Club from Year 4 upwards. This unique partnership gives pupils access to their outstanding professional coaches and develops their skills to swim competitively or enjoy recreational swimming.

Junior School Swimming Programme Our Year 3 to 5 children continue with the ‘Learn to Swim’ programme, where they develop fundamental technical skills required for swim safety and enjoyment, encompassing all strokes in preparation for progression into Year 6 and the Senior School. The Programme ensures that all children will be learning ahead of the governmental guidelines, putting them at an advantage for the course of their swimming development. At this stage, all children will start to learn a variety of race skills, as well as consolidating fundamentals and progressing the technical requirements of the sport, to stand them in good stead for lifelong participation or whet their competitive appetite.

In Year 6, the next stage of the programme, Progressive Talent ID, is accessible to children. Athletes can start to build on the fitness foundations required for competitive swimming, as well as those required for using swimming as a healthy lifestyle choice. Still technically based, the programme will provide further opportunities at club and competitive level for those who have chosen swimming as a main sport and will develop selected athletes for the performance element of the pathway. Sessions are delivered within the School curriculum and through after-School clubs, with optional access to additional sessions with our partner, Bristol Henleaze Swimming Club. Junior School swimming galas are a highlight of the Clifton High sporting calendar and capture the ‘Sport for All’ ethos. Bringing pupils together to develop their confidence, teamwork and competitive spirit, these experiences encourage pupils to develop their race skills, compete for personal bests or proudly represent their House.

The Tennis Programme Tennis at Clifton High School offers a progressive pathway from the earliest years through to Senior School, enabling pupils to develop their skills, confidence and enjoyment of the sport at every stage.

In The Hive to Year 2, weekly curriculum sessions introduce fundamental tennis skills, with dedicated performance opportunities for younger pupils. From Year 3 onwards, pupils can access additional co-curricular sessions as part of our Enrichment Programme, and individual or small-group coaching, allowing them to develop their technique and progress at their own pace. Tennis becomes part of the PE curriculum in Years 7–10, alongside opportunities to represent the School through our competitive tennis teams and access further coaching before or after the School day. With specialist coaching and a strong competitive programme, including county-level success, talented players are encouraged to pursue their potential, with high-performing athletes able to access our Athletic Development Programme (ADP). 55

Our annual Sports Day is a major highlight of the School year, motivating pupils to train, compete and pursue personal excellence.

Senior School Swimming All Senior School pupils, whatever their level or motivation, are encouraged to enjoy the sport of swimming, whether they prefer to swim competitively or for enjoyment. We administer the second and third stages of the National Swimming Programme, which forms part of our Progressive Talent ID programme in Years 7 to 9. This focuses on the fitness foundations required for swimming, enforcing technical skills for those who have chosen swimming as a main sport or for selected athletes who will navigate the performance pathway. Swimming lessons are delivered within the School curriculum, with much of the provision being through after-School clubs and in association with our partner club, Bristol Henleaze Swimming Club. In Year 10 and 11, swimmers advance to the final stages of the Progressive Talent ID programme, namely Elite Adaptations. This level of training aims at competitive success, with dry land training and pool slots as part of their curriculum timetable or within the after-School Elite Training programme. Senior School swimming galas are a highlight of the Clifton High sporting calendar and capture the ‘Sport for All’ ethos. Bringing pupils together to develop their confidence, teamwork and competitive spirit, galas encourage pupils to develop their race skills, compete for personal bests or proudly represent their House. Adventure Programme In the Infant and Junior School, Forest School and Adventure are delivered by specialist staff alongside class teachers, in weekly or fortnightly timetabled sessions. Pupils can enjoy specialist facilities in a variety of locations, including The Downs Preparatory School, Wraxall Piece and Mendip Activity Centre. Sessions are tailored to suit the age and development of pupils. In Reception to Year 2, Forest School sessions are focused on exploration through play and discovery, encouraging pupils to be curious about the natural world and to gain confidence in outdoor settings. In Years 3 to 6, pupils progress to more specific and adventurous activities including climbing, bushcraft and water-based activities.

ENRICHMENT

Pupils are also encouraged to work towards achieving the Pembroke Award, our own certificate in outdoor learning that recognises the varied skills and competencies that children develop through adventure and outdoor education.

THE SENIOR SCHOOL Co-Curricular Clubs & Societies The variety of co-curricular clubs and societies available to Senior School pupils and Sixth Form students is rich and wide-ranging, supporting intellectual growth and the development of social abilities in a way that complements Clifton High School’s already comprehensive academic curriculum. These operate before School, during lunchtimes and after School. Parents can track their child’s activities via the online platform, SOCS. Most clubs are included in School fees, although a few specialist clubs incur a small charge. In Years 7-9, all pupils undertake activities as part of the core Enrichment Programme, to inspire them to try new things and to bond with their peers. Activities are planned with pupil enjoyment and self-discovery at the core, and they are regularly encouraged to reflect on what they have learned about themselves. As pupils transition through the Senior School, there is a greater emphasis on pupil choice, progression and leadership.

Outreach

ENRICHMENT

Through the Outreach Programme, pupils are encouraged to gain an appreciation of their place within the local, national and global community, and how they can contribute in a meaningful way towards the lives and experiences of others. In doing so, we aim to encourage and develop greater empathy, compassion and social awareness in our pupils. The Clifton High School House system sits at the core of this, a system which develops pride and belonging but through which pupils can also volunteer their time and skills to benefit a nominated local charity. As well as fundraising, pupils are encouraged to undertake genuine acts of service, whether this be making Christmas cards for residents in Bristol homeless shelters, collecting items for local animal shelters or planning activities for children at regional community centres. 67

Performing Arts Collectively, many of our pupils, staff and community members’ passion for the arts contributes to the range of musical, dramatic and creative clubs we offer, including Music Tech, Music Theory and Composition, Cantata, String Group, Hip Hop Dance and the annual School Production. United in their commitment, collaboration and skills required for an array of performances, these culminate in our termly Lunchtime Concerts, Annual Spring Concert and School Production. In Year 7, the Power of Performance Programme enables all pupils to experience and participate in an element of performance that builds confidence whilst developing a highly sought-after skill that will serve them, no matter what pathway they choose in the future. The offerings within the Performing Arts Programme cultivate the foundations of self-confidence by igniting imaginations as well as expanding upon the fundamental skills developed within daily School performing arts lessons. Clubs are taught by specialist teachers to progress individual development in a fun and engaging manner with pupils encouraged to enhance their potential and passion in the arts, whether that be through creative learning or the opportunity to perform on stage at prestigious venues such as Bristol Cathedral, The Redgrave Theatre and St George’s Bristol. One of the highlights of our performing arts calendar is the Whole School Production, which is open to all pupils, whether they wish to develop their talent for acting and singing, or learn about the technical life of a theatre. Auditions take place in the Autumn Term and performances are enjoyed at the Redgrave Theatre in the Spring Term.

Outdoor Education and Adventure Our Senior School Adventure Programme builds on the rich outdoor education experience afforded to Infant and Junior School pupils, led by a dedicated Head of Outdoor Education and Adventure, as well as the Heads of Duke of Edinburgh. Our Adventure Programme, including the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards, broadens pupils’ awareness and appreciation of the outdoor world and inspires them to embrace new challenges that develop crucial skills like teamwork, leadership, problem-solving and resilience. Pupils in Years 7-8 may complete the Pembroke Award, our bespoke programme of outdoor activities that builds pupils’ knowledge of the natural world and practical ability in skills such as bushcraft, construction, water-based sports, navigation and exploration. In the Senior School, these activities are delivered through a blend of off-timetable Adventure sessions, optional after-School instructor-led sessions and clubs and societies. In Year 9, all pupils undertake the Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, culminating in a two-day expedition during our Senior Activities Week in June / July. Additionally, all Senior School pupils are offered afterSchool Adventure sessions on an optional paid for basis, should they wish to try a new skill such as sailing, kayaking, climbing, paddleboarding and snowboarding. In delivering a range of activities, often tailored to pupils’ and parents’ requests, we partner with acclaimed local providers including All Aboard Bristol and Mendip Activity Centre.

JOINING THE HIVE & INFANT SCHOOL The Admissions Process Transitioning into the Early Years at Clifton High School marks the beginning of new experiences and opportunities for children to embark upon a journey of personal and academic development that naturally shapes their future. The Hive welcomes children after their third birthday and, due to the more bespoke nature of entry at this young age, we invite families to book an individual tour to observe The Hive on a typical School day. Closer to the time of entry, children who have secured a place in The Hive will be invited to attend an Assessment Morning. This is a positive experience that enables staff to informally assess each child, ensuring they are meeting age-appropriate milestones. Reception Class is the first point of formal entry into the School. Children from The Hive will automatically be allocated a place in Reception, joining the September after they turn four years of age. In the Autumn term, external families applying for entry into Reception are invited to an Infant Open Morning and a Stay and Play Morning, which allows the children time to experience our School. This is also an opportunity for staff to informally assess children to ensure they are meeting age-appropriate milestones. For external entry into Years 1 and 2, children will be invited to a Taster Day where they can meet new friends and experience a typical Clifton High School day. The class teacher will spend relaxed one-to-one time with them to assess their abilities in English and Mathematics. Upon registering for a place within The Hive, Infant and Junior School, our Admissions Team will request a confidential reference from each child’s current Nursery, Pre-School or Infant School setting, with prior permission from the family. For those families applying for a place in Year 1 or Year 2, we will also request a copy of each child’s most recent school report.

The next step is for our Admissions Team to send out offers of a place and invite children to attend Settling-In Sessions during the Summer Term, ahead of all children starting in September.

JOINING THE JUNIOR SCHOOL The Admissions Process The main entry points into the Junior School are Year 3 and 5, although we do accept applications into Year 4 and 6 if places are available. For entry into Year 3, children will attend a Taster Day in a Year 2 class and be informally assessed by the Class Teacher during their visit. For entry into Years 4 to 6, children are invited to sit entrance examinations in English and Mathematics before attending a Taster Day in their current year group. For entry into all year groups, parents will be required to provide a copy of their child’s most recent school report, and the Admissions Team will request a confidential reference from your child’s current school.

JOINING THE SENIOR SCHOOL The Admissions Process New Senior School pupils or a child transitioning from our Junior School are in the safe and capable hands of Clifton High School’s community. Our expertise and understanding of the significant milestone this signifies in a child’s life is identified as a symbol of personal, emotional and academic growth. As pupils move from a nurturing, more familiar environment into one that is naturally more challenging and diverse, we support them every step of the way. Our Admissions Team guide families through the entry process on an individual basis, following the admissions process below. The main entry point into the Senior School is Year 7, with applications into Years 8 to 10 accepted if places are available with potential Year 9 pathways available through our Pembroke Education group of schools. For direct entry into Year 7, prospective pupils are invited to attend a Taster Day in the Autumn Term of Year 6 before sitting entrance examinations in the following January. Further details of these entrance examinations can be obtained from the Admissions Office. For entry into Years 9 to 10, prospective pupils are invited to sit entrance examinations in English and Mathematics. If successful, they will be invited to attend a Taster Day in their current year group.

Scholarship Entry Pupils who possess potential ability and aptitude may be considered for a Clifton High School Scholarship. Scholarships are typically awarded upon entry into Year 7, but can be awarded in other Senior School year groups at the discretion of the Head. All pupils applying for Year 7 entry are automatically considered for an Academic Scholarship based on the results of entrance examinations. Sport and Music Sponsorships as well as an Individual Brilliance Award for abilities or skills which do not fall into the other categories, such as Art, Drama, Computing, or something more unique, are available.
