JUNIOR SPORTS (Years 9-10) FOCUS SPORTS BOYS’ RUGBY

A traditional Michaelmas term sport, boys’ rugby is a 15-a-side game steeped in history and school tradition. With a challenging fixture card, the sport develops teamwork, resilience, leadership and character while creating lifelong friendships and memorable experiences.

GIRLS’ HOCKEY

A traditional termly sport, girls’ hockey has a rich history and continues to provide an exciting and competitive experience for pupils. A challenging fixture programme encourages skill development, teamwork and the creation of lifelong memories.

GIRLS’ NETBALL

A traditional Lent term sport, girls’ netball is a fast-paced 7-a-side game played across both indoor and outdoor facilities. With a strong regional fixture programme, netball develops teamwork, communication and resilience while creating lifelong friendships and memories.

BOYS’ HOCKEY

A traditional Lent term sport, boys’ hockey is an 11-a-side game offering a competitive and rewarding team experience. A regional fixture programme helps pupils develop technical ability, teamwork, leadership and the life skills gained through sport. Pupils build confidence, determination and the values of discipline and sportsmanship.

A traditional Summer term sport. Tennis offers pupils the opportunity to develop individual skills, tactical awareness and a strong competitive mindset. Through competitive fixtures and coaching, players build confidence, determination and the values of discipline and sportsmanship.

CROSS-COLLEGE DRAMA SHOWCASE

A vibrant celebration of the Bard’s iconic works. Pupils perform a dynamic mix of classic monologues, comedies and tragedies, honing their classical acting skills, command of language and stage presence.

Taking place at the Tobacco Factory Theatres in April, this major showcase features a fearless collective of artists— from the youngest performers to senior voices. The evening includes monologues, duologues, group ensembles and show-stopping musical theatre.

LAMDA SHOWCASE A platform for pupils to present their polished London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) examination pieces. Pupils perform a varied selection of monologues, poetry recitations and scene work, demonstrating confidence, vocal clarity and expressive storytelling skills. MUSIC IN THE CRYPT An atmospheric, intimate performance series hosted in the unique acoustic environment of the College’s historic crypt, perfect for acoustic acts and soloists.

INDIVIDUAL LESSONS MUSIC LESSONS Clifton has 25 visiting music teachers providing weekly individual music lessons in a range of styles: jazz, classical and popular. Lessons are available for strings, brass, drums, guitar (electric, classical, bass, acoustic), piano, organ, harp, voice (including music theatre), woodwind and percussion. We also have some instruments that can be hired. Lessons are typically 40 minutes long. We encourage all pupils to learn an instrument, whether beginner or more advanced, alongside their academic studies. Learning an instrument boosts confidence, coordination and creativity. Lessons also open up opportunities to take part in our many bands, choirs, ensembles and our orchestra performing in and out of school. LAMDA Clifton College offers dedicated individual peripatetic LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) tuition for pupils across all grades in the Upper School. These bespoke sessions are designed to support pupils in developing confident communication skills, technical proficiency and creative expression. Pupils can choose to work toward examinations in the following disciplines: • Acting: Developing performance techniques, characterisation and interpretation. • Speaking Verse and Prose: Enhancing vocal technique, rhythm and the interpretation of literature. • Speaking in Public: Building essential skills in presentation, structure, and persuasive communication. ENRICHMENT

Our Enrichment programme is designed to broaden horizons, spark new passions, and provide Upper School pupils with invaluable skills that go beyond the traditional classroom. Running generally on Monday afternoons from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM, these sessions offer a mature environment for Year 12 and 13, alongside selected Year 11 pupils, to dive deeper into specialised fields. In the Summer term, the focus transitions exclusively to Year 12, providing a tailored springboard for their upcoming final year and future ambitions.

Our extensive volunteering programme empowers pupils to give back, develop empathy, and build valuable real-world skills. Pupils can choose from a diverse range of placements, including supporting local foodbanks, building intergenerational connections in care homes and gaining retail experience in partner charity shops (such as The Mind Shop and Penny Brohn). Those passionate about education can assist younger learners by volunteering in local nurseries, preschools, and primary schools, or right here within our own Clifton College Preschool, Pre-Prep, and Prep departments. Additionally, pupils can develop coaching skills as Learning Support Mentors or participate in the BEP (Bristol Educational Partnership) Student Mentoring scheme, while senior pupils can step into Volunteering Management to help organise and oversee these impactful community initiatives.

There are two positions in both Cedar Care homes across the Downs (Waltham house and Saville Manor). Following an induction, you will volunteer with caring for the elderly, such as playing games, tea/biscuits and general well-being activities such as baking, arts/crafts etc. This is an excellent opportunity to build on your communication skills and for those interested in a healthcare career.

Volunteers will help support local charity shops by serving customers, sorting donations and helping make window displays. You will gain leadership skills through running donation drives at school. This is a great way to give back to the local community and improve communication skills.

VOLUNTEERING: FOODBANK

Volunteers will support the local community by sorting donations and helping with admin. This will improve communication skills and help you to gain an insight into life outside the Clifton Bubble.

VOLUNTEERING: NURSERY

Volunteers will visit nurseries and help to look after young children, supporting nursery teachers. Ideal for those who have an interest in pursuing a career in education or healthcare.

VOLUNTEERING: 11 12 13 LEARNING SUPPORT MENTOR Mature students are required to support GCSE students in a 1:1 capacity in Group Learning Support lessons. Mature students with expertise in Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Maths, English Language/Literature, Geography, History, Business, or Economics etc. are desirable so you can be paired up/support GCSE students. Please note, the lessons available below are when Group Learning Support happens during Week A and B. You would need to be free during two of these lessons. This will be confirmed in September once the content of these lessons is decided upon.

VOLUNTEERING: 11 12 13 CREATIVE ART SESSIONS DELIVERED TO PRIMARY SCHOOLS/YOUNG SCHOLARS An offering involving workshops planned and delivered to our own Prep students and to some of our local Primary schools. Students who are interested in working with young children would benefit from this activity. A level art students and scholars are expected to engage with this.

VOLUNTEERING: 11 12 13 PRIMARY SCHOOL Volunteers will act as Teaching Assistants and support younger pupils in learning to read and with their lessons. Ideal for those who have an interest in pursuing a career in education or healthcare.

Volunteers will plan and run an Art club for Year 5/6 pupils with a focus on sketching.

Volunteers will run a range of mathematical strategy games allowing pupils to work on their reasoning and justification skills alongside some basic numerical calculations. You will plan and deliver the activities suitable for Year 5/6 pupils with a focus on puzzles and problem solving.

VOLUNTEERING: 11 12 13 PRIMARY SCHOOL (CHRISTCHURCH) SPANISH CLUB Volunteers will plan and run a Spanish club for Year 4 pupils. You will need to design engaging activities to help these pupils to learn simple vocabulary in a fun way.

An opportunity to get involved in caring for some of the College’s gardens. You will have hands-on responsibilty and the chance to develop your understanding of the natural world. It is hoped that we will also plant and grow vegetables. This activity will suit students who enjoy being outdoors, working with their hands, and who are intersted in nature and the environment. No previous gardening experience required.

This session is for native speakers who can write and speak in the target language. You will be required to attend additional sessions outside the enrichment slot. You will be sitting the A level exams at the end of Year 13 and gain an extra A level qualification. There is a class for Y12 and another one for Y13.

CLUBS

Clubs at Clifton are all about community, collaboration and exploration. Meeting primarily on Tuesdays from 3:30PM to 4:30PM, our clubs are designed to be highly accessible and engaging. While these activities are curated with Year 9 and Year 10 pupils in mind to help them build strong foundational interests, we warmly welcome informal arrangements for older year groups to join in, provided it balances alongside their core commitments.

CADEMIC ELECTIVE

These electives are teacher-led and designed by experts in their field, and they will give you the opportunity to choose two electives to pursue over the first two terms of Year 12. We believe this is the ideal time to engage in an elective, as it provides you with a valuable opportunity to explore areas beyond the syllabus. This exploration can help you decide what you want to study at university or even give you ideas for future careers. It’s also a chance to pursue a passion, try something completely new, or simply enjoy the challenge of learning for its own sake. We’ll leave the summer highly focused on competitive admissions preparation, including those for Oxbridge and other specialised entrance tests, giving you a strong head start well ahead of Year 13. We are confident it will provide a significant advantage for your future.

20TH CENTURY POPULAR MUSIC APPRECIATION

A ten-week course exploring script structure, character development and dialogue. Pupils analyse classical and contemporary playwriting to craft original scenes, supporting House Plays or creative writing interests.

Explores the evolution of music genres, instruments and recording technology from wax cylinders to streaming, examining how popular sounds reflected major 20th-century social movements.

Prerequisites: An interest in creative writing and a willingness to share ideas in a group.

BEYOND THE GAME: CAREERS AND SCIENCE IN SPORT A comprehensive introduction to the sports industry beyond playing. Covers sports marketing, management, nutrition, injury rehabilitation and the innovative training methods behind Paralympic sport. Prerequisites: Open to all pupils.

LITERATURE, LANGUAGES AND LINGUISTICS READING THE WORLD: EXPLORING LANGUAGE, LITERATURE, AND MEDIA A dynamic elective examining how communication shapes reality. Applies critical theories to literature, linguistics, and film, providing an ideal foundation for humanities degrees.

MODERN LANGUAGES CULTURAL STUDIES Deepens understanding of the cultural, historical, and societal contexts of foreign languages through authentic literature, film, and art. Prerequisites: Current A-Level Modern Language pupil.

UK LINGUISTICS OLYMPIAD A language-analysis competition where pupils solve logical puzzles based on global languages, Braille or heraldic symbols to expand lateral thinking skills. Prerequisites: Open to all; no prior language proficiency required.

IELTS PREPARATION Targeted exam technique and practice across reading, writing, listening, and speaking to prepare pupils for Englishspeaking university admissions. Prerequisites: Required for EAL pupils without a GCSE in English.

A practical trading simulation where pupils act as portfolio managers, learning to interpret market data, manage risk and build investment strategies.

Prerequisites: An interest in history, politics, psychology, technology or media.

ECONOMICS READING GROUP

A seminar-style group discussing university-level articles beyond the A-Level syllabus, covering behavioural, experimental and feminist economics to strengthen university applications.

A weekly debate forum exploring complex concepts like free will, morality, the ethics of artificial intelligence and the philosophical implications of climate change. Prerequisites: Open to all pupils.

DIGITAL GEOGRAPHY Introduces vital workplace data skills using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to collect, analyse and visualise spatial data and real-world datasets. Prerequisites: Open to all. A personal device is required.

VISUAL ARTS COMPUTER AIDED DESIGN AND 3D PRINTING Equips pupils with professional CAD digital modelling skills, bridging the gap between virtual design and physical manufacture through 3D printing. Prerequisites: Open to all pupils interested in design, engineering, or architecture.

LIFE DRAWING Working directly from a live model to master proportion, anatomy, and observation, providing excellent portfolio work for university applications. Prerequisites: Open to A-Level Art/ Photography pupils, Art Scholars or advanced artists.

PHOTOGRAPHY Explores the art and science of imagery, covering darkroom processing, pinhole cameras, digital composition, studio lighting, and Photoshop editing. Prerequisites: Open to all pupils.

SCIENCE AND MEDICAL HEALTHCARE TO INFINITY AND BEYOND MATHEMATICS (MICHAELMAS - ELECTIVE 1 ONLY) Explores unexpected, real-world applications of A-Level mathematical concepts, from daily Google searches and code-cracking to gambling probabilities.

PROOF AND LOGIC, PREPARING FOR THE TMUA - MATHEMATICS (LENT - ELECTIVE 2 ONLY) Introduces the formal theorems, proofs, and rigorous mathematical logic required for future STEM degrees and the TMUA entry test.

Prerequisites: Must be studying A-Level Mathematics.

BONUS BIOLOGY

A practical guide to building interactive games using the Godot Game Engine, applying object-oriented programming concepts like inheritance and polymorphism.

Designed for ambitious pupils to stretch their knowledge beyond the standard curriculum through advanced topics, CRISPR gene editing, dissections and Biology Olympiad preparation.

Prerequisites: Programming experience preferred but not essential.

Prerequisites: A keen interest in biological sciences.

MOLECULAR MAVERICKS: CHEMISTRY A practical tour of spectacular chemical reactions, from synthesising dyes to examining combustion, preparing pupils for senior chemistry challenges. Prerequisites: Recommended for pupils interested in university science, Medicine, or related fields.

ADVANCED PSYCHOLOGY: RESEARCH AND COMPETITION Combines Psychology Olympiad preparation with an independent, hands-on psychological research project, culminating in data analysis and a formal presentation. Prerequisites: Studying Psychology is desirable but not essential.

SCIENCE AND MEDICAL HEALTHCARE CONTINUED... ENGINEERING ENTRANCE TEST PREPARATION Direct preparation for the Engineering Sciences Admissions Test (ESAT), sharpening mathematical fluency and physical science problem-solving for Cambridge and Imperial applications. Prerequisites: Current A-Level Mathematics and Physics pupils.

PATHWAYS TO MEDICINE Specialised, weekly support for Medicine, Dentistry, or Veterinary applications, exploring medical ethics, NHS structure, admissions tests, and MMI interview prep. Prerequisites: Aiming for medical, dental or veterinary degree programmes. (Runs Tuesdays 4pm–5pm).

PREP SCIENCE COMMUNICATION & LEADERSHIP Developed to build communication and leadership skills by planning and delivering engaging scientific investigations to Year 7 and 8 pupils. Prerequisites: Must have selected a Science elective in the Michaelmas term.

LEARNING SUPPORT STUDY SKILLS A supportive ten-week course focusing on organisation, revision routines, spaced repetition, resource creation and assistive technology to prepare pupils for higher education. Prerequisites: Open to all pupils seeking additional academic support.
