WHY THE STATUS QUO JUST ISN’ ISN’T ENOUGH We need to do more. That was the biggest takeaway – and challenge – from the five-year strategic plan crafted by Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio in 2021. The plan is ambitious: Double the number of kids served by 2025. Open 25 new sites. And create regional hubs to better serve neighborhoods. These goals were not set in a vacuum. They were the result of thousands of hours of work by people inside and outside the organization – employees, youth, board members, donors and other community stakeholders. We are so grateful for their efforts and for your support of our kids. We set a high bar for growth because the need is so great. Northeast Ohio has the highest child poverty rate in the country and Cleveland is the worst-connected large city in the U.S. in terms of digital access. BGCNEO, which was created by the 2019 merger of Clubs in Cleveland, Akron, Lorain County and Sandusky, now serves about 8,000 kids in five counties. But it is sobering that we now reach only 8% of those in need. That’s why we flipped our organizational chart upside down, with kids now at the top. Yes, we need to do more. We can and we will. TOGETHER WE CAN CREATE A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR KIDS Our Clubs provide safe, fun places for kids ages 6-18 after school -- the most critical time of day for youth. As one of the largest Boys & Girls Clubs organizations in the country, we are determined to provide even more of those places for the children and working families who count on us for life-changing programs. Our new strategic plan is ambitious, and we will need your help. Here are the three main goals: Neighborhood focus: We will deepen our roots in the communities we serve by creating smaller regional hubs that give families a rallying point and faces they know. Invest in life-changing programs: We will scale transformative, proven Club programs so more Northeast Ohio kids can thrive. In a survey, 54% of alumni said the club literally “saved my life.” Serve more kids: We will double the number of youth served to 20,000 by 2025. To do so, we need to open 25 new sites across the region – a step requiring new revenue.

A WILLINGNESS TO HELP OTHERS HELPS HIM THRIVE AT THE CLUB Wilfredo, 9, is in his element. The personable Elyria boy is a natural helper. While other kids might view setting the cafeteria tables for dinner at the Westview Elementary Club as a chore, Wilfredo gladly pitches in. “He’s the epitome of Club spirit,” Club Director Alivia Nimene says. “He says hi to every single staff member. He is very positive, never a discouraging word. And he is just great with our younger kids.” Wilfredo is thriving at the Club, where he has friends and is involved in virtually all the activities. That allows his mother, a dental student at Lorain County Community College, to attend class and study with the knowledge that Wilfredo is going to be in a safe, fun place after school and during the summer. “I love coming to the Club,” he says. “We get to do so many fun things, like different activities and field trips. And we get to go outside and get fresh air.” Wilfredo’s positive attitude has made him a staff favorite. “He is,” Nimene says, “the kind of kid who makes you want to come to work every day.”
BUSY SANDUSKY TEEN STRIVES ‘TO BE AT THE TOP OF HER GAME’ GAME’ It is hard to keep up with Nevaeh Richardson. Nevaeh, a 2022 Sandusky High School graduate and a seven-year Boys & Girls Club member, always has a lot on her plate. In high school, she was a cheerleader, a student government representative and an outfielder on the softball team. After school, she danced at a local studio and volunteered at a church program that helps third- and fourth-graders in her community. “Nevaeh is one young lady who is striving to always be at the top of her game,” says Vicki Slaughter, a high school teacher and coordinator of the church afterschool program. “Her smile and positive attitude are addicting. Her inspiration to be the best she can be…is overwhelming.” The once-shy Nevaeh says the Club helped her emerge from her shell. “The companionship I felt at the Club taught me how to be a people person,” she says. Nevaeh’s leadership both at the Club and in the community was recognized in 2022 when she was named the Boys & Girls Clubs of Northeast Ohio’s Youth of the Year. BGCNEO is the largest Boys & Girls Club in the state, with nearly 50 sites in Cuyahoga, Summit, Lorain, Erie and Huron counties. Nevaeh describes the people at the Club as “like my second family. “When I was younger, the members of the Club taught me traits like friendship, compassion and love, which helped me grow into who I am today,” she says. Nevaeh is now headed to Kent State University, where she will be studying to become a pediatric nurse practitioner – a career choice influenced by the work of her mother, a nurse. Don’t be surprised if Nevaeh not only achieves her goal but reaches a bunch of new milestones along the way.

POSITIVE CLUB ENVIRONMENT HELPS TEEN GAIN CONFIDENCE, FRIENDS You might say Eddie was a reluctant Club member. The 13-year-old Cleveland boy went to the William C. Bryant Club with his sister, Alexis, when she decided to join the summer camp there. Soon Alexis was urging Club Director Shirlann Lawson to convince Eddie to sign up, telling her that being around the kids and staff would be good for him. “I looked over to a tall, slender, very shy young man who didn’t really want to be here,” Lawson says. “So I gave it my best shot. After a short conversation, I asked him to give the Club a try. “Thankfully, he said yes.” What happened over the next five weeks was nothing short of remarkable. The quiet, withdrawn young man opened up. He made new friends. He seemed to gain confidence by the day. “I really, really like it here, and I’m glad I came to the Club,” Eddie says. Even though he says he’s not particularly athletic, he enjoys playing sports at the Club. In addition, he likes hanging out with friends and taking part in activities. “I have fun here,” he says. Lawson says it was a huge step for Eddie when he agreed to be interviewed for this story. “I was so surprised that he said OK, even when I told him that if it was uncomfortable he didn’t have to do it,” she says. “To some it may have seemed to be an easy thing but I know for him it was a huge undertaking . This young man that would barely look, speak or interact with other people did a one-on-one interview with someone he didn’t know – that is priceless.”
BREANNA’S ‘BUBBLE BREANNA’ BUBBLE’’ EXPANDS THROUGH HER CLUB EXPERIENCE Breanna used to be shy. “I had a bubble (of friends), and it was a very small bubble,” she says with a smile. Things started to change when, at age 7, she joined the LeBron James Club in Akron. The transformation did not happen overnight. In those first days, Breanna was still hesitant to talk to other Club kids. Slowly, she says, “I would add more and more people to my bubble. I would have never guessed it, but the people I met at the Club back then are still my friends today.” Today, Breanna, 17, is a 10-year Club member who has blossomed as a leader. At her Club, she has been involved in SMART Girls -- a small-group health, fitness, prevention/education and self-esteem enhancement program designed to meet the developmental needs of girls – as well as Torch Club, a leadership group, and BGCNEO’s junior staff program. “I always feel at home at the Club,” she says. “There is never a situation where I don’t feel safe or comfortable. No matter what, I will always love the Boys & Girls Club. I became attached to it. I am so happy my grandma signed me up to be a Club kid because it changed my life in so many ways.” Breanna is now a senior at East Community Learning Center in Akron and is planning to go to college. LeBron James Club Director Kiara Brown says Breanna’s participation in Club activities surrounding such topics as financial literacy and career readiness bodes well for her future. “She’s going through these programs, and then when she gets older she’s going to be using those skills,” Brown says. “She’s going to nail it.”
