Bluebill Lake Just four miles southwest of Clear Lake, Bluebill is a 40-acre lake filled with great fishing. Species include channel catfish, largemouth bass, yellow perch, black crappie and bluegill. It has a hard surface boat ramp (electric motors only), fishing jetty, and restrooms.

It’s the little things, like the small businesses that are still open, being able to go rock out at the Surf, and the quick but slow drive down Main Street to get to the Seawall, and the friendly people who always wave even if they don’t know you. How about hearing the Clear Lake Band playing the Lions fight song. You know you have to sing along if you hear it! And if you’re anything like me, you still know the fight song cheerleading dance, even in my 30s! CLEAR LAKE COMMUNITY SCHOOLS

Beginning in 1942, only 217 students walked the halls of Clear Lake High School. As enrollment began to increase over the years, so did the community involvement, athletic and academic accolades. In the 1960s, Clear Lake Schools initiated a pioneer program to combine classes with Ventura in order to provide better training to students. The Junior High School was dedicated in January of 1978 after a devastating fire three years prior. In October of 1998, the Elementary School was dedicated. The Clear Lake Lions have a tremendous history of achievements throughout the years, proving that hard work and perseverance really do pay off. Football, Baseball and Golf have excelled to the State level on multiple occasions. In the academic sector, the addition of the Sandbox Makerspace has been a tremendous addition to the Middle School. Our Robotics Club began in 2016 and qualified for national competition. Project Lead the Way was recently launched at the elementary level which is a STEM based program and robotics for the younger kids.

2001

The first Clear Lake newspaper, the Independent, was published on February 10, 1860. It continued publication for about a year before being moved to Hancock County. In 1869, the Observer was established. After two years the proprietor, George E. Frost, sold the office to Judge M.P. Rosecrans. He, too, soon sold the office to parties in Belmond. Mr. Frost then purchased a new outfit and for a few years was the editor. In 1879 he sold to Mr. Bush who changed the name to the Clear Lake Mirror. In 1896, J.C. Davenport established another weekly paper which he called the Clear Lake Reporter. These two publications combined under one owner when the Reporter purchased the Mirror in 1951. For a while, the Mirror published on Tuesdays and the Reporter published on Fridays. This went on until January of 1955 when the two joined together to become the Clear Lake Mirror-Reporter. In 1983, the Mirror-Reporter was purchased by Prefin, Inc. The team of Dave Presler and Michael Finnegan comprised the business as well as owning other area newspapers. Presler eventually moved on from the company and focus was placed to ownership of the Clear Lake paper by Finnegan, selling off the other newspapers and concentrating all his efforts into the paper as it is now. Finnegan has achieved numerous accolades in his 34 years of ownership of the paper. In 2011, he was named a “Master Editor - Publisher” by the Iowa Newspaper Association. The Mirror-Reporter is now a weekly publication and comes out every Wednesday.

CLEAR LAKE LIONS CLUB

• Completed State Tourism Program (CEPP)

The Clear Lake Lions Club is the oldest Lions club in Iowa, formed in 1921. They call themselves the “Noon Lions” but Noon is really not part of their name. The distinction is made so they are not confused with the “Evening Lions.” They bought the land currently known as Lions Field and donated it to the Clear Lake school system. They have contributed numerous attributes to Clear Lake including, the shelter house at Touristville Park, the shelter house at Pine Tree Park, the walking paths at Opportunity Village, and the fountain gazebo building in City Park. A highlight for the Lions is their annual Chicken BBQ, held the 3rd Sunday in July in downtown Clear Lake. Thousands of people line the streets around City Park to partake in this delicious meal!

The Globe Gazette, known locally as simply, ‘The Globe,’ is a daily morning newspaper published in Mason City. It traces its history all the way back to 1858, but was then called the Cerro Gordo Press, after the county it resides in. In 1925 it acquired its current name, but since it began had been known as the Republican, the Express, the Express-Republican, the Freeman, the WesternDemocrat, the Herald, the Time-Herald, the Gazette, and then finally, the Globe. The newspaper was originally published in the afternoon Monday through Saturday. But in 1977, the Saturday edition switched to a morning publication. In 1981, all publication switched to a morning schedule which seems fitting as the population generally enjoys the paper over a morning cup of coffee! The Sunday publication of the Globe made its first run in 1985. While the Globe-Gazette is published in Mason City, they provide quality journalism throughout the North Iowa Area, including Clear Lake. Their coverage of Clear Lake school activities, community events and issues exceeds their reputation over the years.

NIACC, which began as Mason City Junior College in 1918, has the distinction of being the very first public two-year college in Iowa and one of the first such institutions in the country. The idea formulated at a PTA meeting in 1916 and their first classes were held on the top floor of the high school building with only 28 students. In the mid 1950s, the College moved from the high school building to the Memorial University Building on Roosevelt campus. It remained there for twelve years and grew in enrollment by twenty percent. NIACC moved to its new home in 1970 and construction began on adding new buildings. In 1972, dormitories were built to house over 450 students, and by 1979 the Auditorium was completed. Today, the 500-acre campus consists of multiple state of the art facilities, including the recent addition of the new dormitories. They offer more than 50 programs that take one or two years to complete, and many transferable classes to those looking to move on toward their Bachelor’s Degree. On average, the College serves over 3,700 degree students each year and thousands more through non-credit programs.

Legend has it that E.B. Stillman rode into Clear Lake on his Indian Motor Coach and just set up shop as a one person attorney office. The new law firm was aptly named Stillman Law Firm. That was in 1913. The firm that survives Mr. Stillman covers many areas of law practice. There is the general practice of law, and the following specialty areas: estate planning, real estate, legal service plans, and family law. Attorneys that are or have been part of the firm include: Don Goranson, retired, who joined the firm in the 1940’s; Phil Stone became active with the firm in 1977; Tom Lovell, now General Manager of CL Tel, joined the firm in the 1970’s; and finally Charlie Bieberscheimer, who joined the firm in the 1990’s. If you add up all of the years of legal practice among the attorneys who have worked at Stillman Law Firm, it would be over 180 years of experience. The office is located on Main Avenue in Clear Lake. Here are several interesting pieces of important historical trivia related to Mr. Stillman. He served as the School Board attorney for over 60 years. That is the key reason the high school auditorium has been named after him –the E.B. Stillman Auditorium. He also was a charter member of the Clear Lake Rotary Club when it was founded in 1920. That particular club was the first club in the country granted a charter to a community with under 10,000 residents. We want to thank Stillman Law Firm for being a long and loyal Chamber member over the years.

Originally Corner Drug, the pharmacy opened in 1934 on the corner of 4th & 3rd Street in Clear Lake (which is now the Red Geranium). The store was started by pharmacist Guy Wiskerhoff and a school teacher by the name of John Roseland. While in business, it became the ‘place to be’ for an after school refresher of Cherry Cokes and Milkshakes. In 1959, Jack Roseland bought out his father’s share of the company. A year later, in 1960, Bob Tanner bought out Guy Wiskerhoff. Eventually, Gordan Rosenthal bought Jack’s half of the company and it was owned and operated by him and Bob Tanner. In 1970, the two men had the opportunity to purchase the old bank building on the corner of 4th & Main. Being that the new location was on a corner, they were able to keep the same name, Corner Drug, until 2004 when they sold the business to Thrifty White. Thrifty White was founded in 1957 with the first store being in Brainerd, Minnesota. Today, they have 95 locations throughout the Midwest. Their primary focus is pharmacy business along with associated drug store operations. In 2015, they moved into their current location on Hwy 18. Their commitment to community starts with the local business owner.

They are a full service telecom and broadband service provider offering telephone, Internet, long distance, digital cable, TV, wireless, video conferencing, paging and phone store services.

• IGNITE Clear Lake Fireworks Endowment Campaign

CL Tel offered phone service in 1878, just two years after it’s invented. They continued expanding their area and making advancements through the years. In 1982, they ushered in the information age with a new NEC digital switch. In 1991, they offered cellular phone service, and in 1994 they were the first in Clear Lake to provide local access to the global Internet. They celebrated their 100th anniversary by deploying more fiber optic cable. Over the next several years, they continued to upgrade and expand the fiber optic network, making them pioneers of this incredible innovation and technology in our area. Businessman, Truman Woodford, owned a lumberyard in Milwaukee, but opened another in Clear Lake in 1869. The beauty of the lake and surrounding prairie land drew him to the area. The railroad had arrived in town by that time and fueled the growth of settlement in Clear Lake, making it easy for shipping lumber and supplies. His brother, George Woodford, purchased an interest in the business in 1879. George’s son, C.R. took over as manager in 1890 after the passing of his father. • Launched Human Trafficking & Awareness Program

The business is now in the hands of the fifth generation. Throughout the years, the Woodford, Ashland, Connell and Lovell families have been involved in the ownership and management of the business. As the growth of the business developed over the years, so did the relationship with suppliers and vendors. Their partnership with Benjamin Moore elevated Woodford Lumber into the category of innovative and forward-thinking and brought to us the first brand of no VOC paint. Woodford Lumber is a staple in the Clear Lake Community and works hard for the customer. They believe in the golden rule of business and look for ways to provide a quality living for all Clear Lake

The Clear Lake Area Chamber will be celebrating our 75th year in the following special ways: introducing two new programs in 2018 that hopefully will have a major impact on the community, as well as North Iowa; hosting a black-tie optional gala dinner at the historic Surf Ballroom on Friday, May 4th (stay tuned for more details on this as our Anniversary Committee is working on all of the details); a special Chamber travel tour that we are working on that will knock your socks off; and a reunion of our five Lake Leadership program participants later in the summer. We will continue to represent this community and our Chamber members in a way that will promote and thoughtfully sustain our terrific way of life here in Clear Lake! It’s easy to be discouraged for those that just like to “be active” but aren’t sure how to get involved. In 2017, Clear Lake hosted the first annual Tri-Clear Lake event. Now for some people, the word triathlon alone elicits a fear and anxiety of doing the impossible. The good thing about this event, is that anyone can do it… you just have to give it a ‘tri.’ The race begins at 8am on Saturday, June 9th with a 750 meter open water swim at State Beach. After that, participants will jump on their bikes and head out for a 12.4 mile jaunt. The race wraps up with a 3.1 mile run, ending on Main Street. When it’s all over, you can head over to City Park for a finish-line party you won’t want to miss. If you’re still on the fence about signing up, here’s a little tidbit of information you may have never guessed: You can do Tri Clear Lake as a relay. So round up a couple friends and get signed up. It doesn’t matter if you have two or three people on your relay team. The main thing is that you’re out there… doing it! Not only that, but every participant is there for a different reason. Yes, some are in it for the competition; to beat their previous time or to win the race in their age group. For some, it’s a pure bucket list item. Something they’ve always wanted to do. And others will be there because they’ve made a conscious decision to be healthier. It’s a great sense of accomplishment to cross that finish line and achieve something you never thought you could do. The common denominator in all these people is one thing… they did it. If the Tri doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, the good news is that Clear Lake offers a plethora of options to keep you moving and shaking throughout the year. And each activity has such a vast array of participants; you’ll fit in whether you’re highly competitive and looking for a win, or just joining in for the fun of it. The Clear Lake Parks & Rec Department is a great place to find activities for all ages. Their kids program is bursting with happenings from fishing camps to organized sports, golf lessons to dance camp, and everything in between. And for the adults, who are kids at heart, get a group of friends together and register a slow-pitch or sand volleyball team. It will guarantee a summer full of lasting memories, and it gets you out and moving. At Parks & Rec, they strive to create opportunities for the citizens of Clear Lake and the surrounding community to be active, have fun, and improve their quality of life. For those looking to find that perfect Zen, that balance of mind, body and soul, be sure to check out Yoga by the Lake. It’s offered every Saturday morning at the Sea Wall area near City Park during the summer and is sure to bring you back into balance and kick-start a fabulous weekend at the Lake. Another fun activity to consider is the Wednesday night bicycle ride. North Iowa Touring Club meets each week at the Sea Wall starting at 5pm (April, May & August) and 5:30 (June and July) for a group ride which is open to the public. Different groups ride at different rates of speed so there’s something for every rider. Rides range anywhere from a 15 mile ride to the more advanced, which is 25+ miles. Helmets are required to participate. Biking is a great way to enjoy the scenic views of the lake while enjoying the outdoors… and getting a little exercise!

On the flip side, I have to admit the best way to experience Clear Lake is from the lake. If you agree, you might be interested in Paddlefest. Scheduled to take place on Saturday, June 28th at 9am, the inaugural event is a great way to explore the shores of our fabulous lake on your kayak, canoe or stand up paddle board. Three options will be available for you to choose from: a 1-mile sprint race, a 5K short course, and a 10K long course. The courses will have separate waves for each category with 3-minute intervals between each category (kayak, canoe and SUP). Being active and conscious of your healthy choices doesn’t have to mean you live and breathe a fit and healthy lifestyle. Just being outside in the fresh air, enjoying the many opportunities Clear Lake has to offer to keep busy and on the move is enough. A healthy heart is a happy heart, and that’s easy to achieve when you’re at the Lake.

The slang expression “roughing it” is a nautical term that dates way back to 1768 meaning to submit to hardship, as often times sailors would lie on the deck to sleep ‘in the rough.’ These days, it’s often used in conjunction with camping or expeditions in the great outdoors. Camping has always been a big attraction in Clear Lake. With our wide array of campgrounds and State Parks, the summer months are bursting with people ditching their stress and technological influences for a taste of the simple life. Families travel from all over to experience the plethora of activities Clear Lake has to offer campers. There’s nothing like spending a hot, sunny afternoon floating in the cool water off State Beach, then sitting by a fire in the campground after the sun goes down. The tastes of roasted hot dog and all the trimmings on your tongue from supper as you toast a marshmallow for the perfect s’more.

Yes, camping in Clear Lake is fantastic. But what if you’re new to the camping scene? You want to experience the fun, but aren’t sure how to get started. Well, the folks at Movement Solutions have rectified that problem. Not only can you rent everything you’ll need for your camping adventure (including items for lake time fun) but they will get your camper to the campground and have it ready, set and hooked up for you to enjoy. Not only does it save you time, but it eliminates the abundance of hassle and stress. All you have to do is show up and let the fun begin. Even more exciting news for those looking to camp in Clear Lake this year is the addition of Hidden Lakes Campground. A hundred acre seasonal site near I-35, Hidden Lakes is tucked into a beautiful wooded area. The campground, which plans to be open in April 2018, is being built in three phases. The first phase includes 82 full service RV sites with city water, sewer, electric and cable connections. However, at the completion of the entire project, Hidden Lakes will offer just over 200 total spots for camping, a shelter house, playground, bathrooms, a beach and other amenities for your camping enjoyment. LIFE HACKS FOR CAMPERS • Mix 1 part tea tree oil to 2 parts water. Spray around shoes to repel tics. • Use tic-tac boxes to store spices. • Add bundles of sage to a campfire to keep mosquitoes away.

• Strap a head light to a gallon jug of water to fill your tent with ambient light. • Store matches in a small Tupperware container and glue sandpaper to the lid. • Frozen water jugs last longer than ice in a cooler • Spoon coffee grounds into filters and tie shut. It’s the truth. When you’re at the lake, you might as well throw caution to the wind. There’s no time constraints, no rigorous schedule to keep. You don’t need to concern yourself with deadlines or a slew of work-related emails. You’re on vacation, and thus, every day is a Sunday Funday. Whether you’re out cruising on the Lady of the Lake, enjoying drinks with friends at PM Park, or having a picnic in one of our many parks, Clear Lake is synonymous with summer fun. Clear Lake Boats has been around for decades as the premier leader in boat sales and service. Their party barge, Miss Guided, is available for rent as well. Equipped with two bathrooms and a full service cash bar, it holds up to 49 people and is the epitome of an awesome Sunday Funday. The addition of various rental businesses over the past few years has made lake time fun limitless. At Movement Solutions,

vacationers have options galore for boat rentals, paddleboards, canoes, trampolines, and even portable hot tubs! Heck, they’ll even get your boat in and out of the water for you, or make sure your rented camper is all set when you get to town.

It’s no secret we’ve seen a few changes in the Clear Lake food scene over the years. Starting with the farmer’s market, which is held every Saturday morning in the Surf Ballroom parking lot from May through October, the theme has shifted toward the healthier side of the spectrum. Fresh. Homemade. Artisan. Farm-to-table. These are all words that describe a movement that leapt into mainstream in the early 2000’s. Until now, it’s mostly been a restaurant style you’d only find in the big city. So what is it, exactly? Well, the farm-to-table concept is noting or relating to fresh, locally sourced food sold to local consumers. In a nutshell, it means new businesses are offering food made from farmers right here in North Iowa. Using locally and regionally produced foods makes it possible for consumers to have fresher, tastier foods. It eliminates the mass-produced types of foods that travel through a lengthy process before landing on the plate in front of you. Instead, it cuts out the middle man and provides the consumer with high-quality deliciousness. This also contributes to the economical sustainability of our area by supporting local economies and increasing profit opportunities for our local farmers.

Starting off the roster is Bread & Buttercrème, a multi-cuisine delight serving lunch, drinks and coffee. But don’t get too full because you need to save room for dessert at this place for sure. The South Shore Donut Company started with their donuts-a-go-go food truck this summer. They’d pop up here and there, you’d blink, and all the donuts would be gone! With such high demand, the DoCo recently opened their storefront location in the old Tinkers Reef on South Shore Drive. However, delicious ooey, gooey, frosted treats aren’t the only thing on the menu…oh no, they also serve lunch! Stop in for one of their signature Mixwich sandwiches and a cup of soup. Finally, the last batter for the freshman team is KB Emporium. This classy, elegant establishment took the Clear Lake food scene to the next level with their simple lunches, fine dining for supper, a rooftop patio, art décor, clothes and a magnificent wine cellar. Growing up I have fond memories of my parents playing their old records on a record machine and dancing to their favorite tunes. My mom would tell me about how she’d run home after school to watch American Bandstand. She definitely passed down her love for music to me. My taste in music may be different, but the love and appreciation for it is the same.

Irma remembers her first visit very vividly. “I came here with my sister. We were standing there when a recording says, ‘Hi! I’m Richie Valens. Welcome to The Surf’ It was the saddest day. They were trying to make us happy, but instead they made us cry. So we hugged each other and left because that was my brother’s voice saying that.”

One of the records I played more than the others when I was little was Ritchie Valens single that had La Bamba on one side of the record and Donna on the other side. I knew that he had died in a plane crash before I was born and that there was a movie called La Bamba about him.

While they left at that moment they continued to return. “We have continued to come and the people just got better and better. They treat us like queens. We became family. We’re all like sisters and brothers.”

Fast forward to 2013 when I officially moved to North Iowa. I asked around for must see’s in north Iowa and was told that the Surf Ballroom should be at the top of my list. They talked about the rich history and even visiting the Buddy Holly Crash Site. I didn’t really know much about Buddy Holly. After visiting the Surf for the first time I put together what you probably already know - both Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens were involved in a tragic accident that changed rock and roll. I had the opportunity to sit down with two of Ritchie’s sisters, Irma and Connie. They just beamed when they shared the stories of their older brother with me. Ritchie had written most of his own music, had several hits, and quite the female following all at 17 years old. They talked about Suzie behind My Little Suzie, how La Bamba affected their family, their mother’s death, and how much they love their family at the Surf Ballroom. Connie explained that coming to the Surf is always bittersweet for her. “That’s the word I always use. Because it is. There’s no other way to describe it better. As sweet as all the people are and our fellowship here with them, we are all gathering together for the same, common purpose.”

Family would be the best way to describe what I saw. As I sat and talked with the sisters several others passed through the room saying hello to them, hugging them, and doing the same with their family that was present. It was genuine. These were people who cared about each other and enjoyed each others company.

Normally moving to a new community and school system right before your junior year in high school would be difficult, however in my case it turned out to be the best thing for me. After moving to Clear Lake and graduating from CLHS (1974) and Central College (1978), I returned to Clear Lake and have been a banker here ever since. This community has been a great place to raise our 2 daughters – for many reasons. - Tim Esbeck

I asked if there was anything they felt people got wrong about Ritchie or if there was anything they thought we should know about him. Their first answer brought a laugh, but they want people to know that Lou Diamond was an actor playing a part and not Ritchie Valens. They also want to honor and remember all that Ritchie accomplished. People weren’t just at the Surf to see Buddy Holly who had a much longer career than Valens. Ritchie was on the top of the charts and they would go as far as saying he was the more popular act at the Winter Dance Party. The family describes the Winter Dance Party as heartwarming. They love that people take time to come in their elaborate costumes and hold on to that era. “I think the reason people hold on to it so much was because it was a time of innocence, it was a time of purity, it was a time when people were polite.” Connie went on, “The Winter Dance Party is a family reunion, but it’s one you want to come to.”

When I moved here to begin a family, I wasn’t sure I’d enjoy the “smallness” of it and limited options for my kids. Since then, I have watched my kids create their own options. I have discovered a community built around famkly and generosity. I’m so proud to call Clear Lake my home. - Amy Wagler 25
