Opening a New Front Door to the Community

When the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce first opened its doors at 205 Main Avenue in 1977, the board couldn’t have imagined the pace of growth our community would experience nearly a half century later. From national tourism recognition to record event attendance, Clear Lake continues to shine brighter each year, but with that growth comes a simple reality. Our space couldn’t keep up with the momentum of the community we serve. That’s why, after years of planning and partnership, ground was broken on a brand-new Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce and Welcome Center in 2025, a project that will more than double the Chamber’s footprint and open its doors in spring 2026. The $2 million initiative, launched through the Building a Bright Future capital campaign, fulfills a key goal in the Chamber’s 2022–2027 Strategic Plan.

Rooted in the heart of downtown, this new facility will finally provide a visitor experience worthy of Iowa’s premier lake destination.

THE FUTURE

A WELCOMING FIRST IMPRESSION The Chamber building, a 1960s-era structure originally built as a gas station, served faithfully but modestly for decades. At just 1,500 square feet, the visitor center could only welcome a few guests at a time and simply couldn’t capture the full spirit and energy of Clear Lake. 6 • DESTINATION CLEAR LAKE

The new visitor center will change that, offering open, light-filled space where travelers can map out their adventures, discover local businesses, and experience Clear Lake hospitality from the moment they arrive.

Established in 1943, the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit organization serving nearly 500 members and thousands of visitors each year. Guided by its mission to be the champion for business success and quality of life, the Chamber works to create a thriving destination and drive community prosperity.

This placemaking project was designed with collaboration and community at the forefront. A tech-driven, state-of-the-art meeting room not only welcomes our Board of Directors but will also host professional development opportunities, workshops, and strategy sessions for local businesses, civic groups, and regional partners.

This project represents the next chapter in that legacy, a space designed to meet today’s needs and tomorrow’s possibilities. It’s where visitors will begin their Clear Lake stories, where businesses will grow together, and where our community will continue to gather and celebrate all year long.

With 17 major events drawing 330,000 attendees and a $20 million economic impact each year, a dedicated event prep space and expanded on-site storage will help the Chamber continue to grow in both scale and efficiency.

The building also prioritizes accessibility with wide entrances, spacious hallways, and an elevator, ensuring every visitor, volunteer, and business leader feels welcome.

BUILT WITH PURPOSE, DESIGNED FOR PEOPLE Clear Lake has evolved into a year-round destination for visitors, entrepreneurs, and families, and the Chamber’s renewed home reflects that momentum. The design isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about function, visibility, and belonging. Large windows and open spaces invite the community in, while natural textures and lakeside tones connect the building to its surroundings. The location, materials, and layout were chosen to make the Chamber more accessible and recognizable as the true front door to Clear Lake. Inside, flexible rooms, improved storage, and modern technology create a space that works as hard as the people who fill it. The result is more than an office. It’s a reflection of who we are today: forwardlooking, collaborative, and deeply proud of the place we call home.

The grand opening in June 2026 marks a new chapter in Clear Lake’s legacy, just in time for our community’s role in the America 250 celebrations. In October, we’ll proudly host our peers from across the state during the Iowa Association of Chambers of Commerce Fall Conference, welcoming them to experience firsthand the community collaboration that makes Clear Lake exceptional. As the walls rise and the vision takes shape, this project reminds us that our greatest investment isn’t in a building, it’s in the future of Clear Lake.

CLEAR LAKE A Destination Through the Ages By: Ashley Weiss

Long before Clear Lake became known for its jam-packed community calendar and the Surf Ballroom & Museum, it was a natural stopping point for explorers and traders seeking calm waters, good fishing, and fertile ground. “The lake has always been a place people are drawn to,” said Beth Ann Schumacher, president of the Clear Lake Historical Society. “Whether it’s for hunting, education, music, or just being by the water, it’s been a destination for centuries.”

Early Days on the Trail of Voyagers

The Chautauqua built on that reputation, offering lectures, musical performances, and appearances by nationally known figures such as Carrie Nation, of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union; Billy Sunday, an evangelist; and William Jennings Bryan, an American lawyer and politician. “Chautauqua was about lifelong learning,” Schumacher said. “You brought your family and stayed for the summer. You could learn agriculture techniques, dancing, or how to play an instrument … It all happened right here in Clear Lake.”

The earliest recorded mention of Clear Lake appears on a 1718 French “Trail of Voyagers” map, which guided fur traders through the Upper Midwest. Marked simply as “the clear lake,” it was considered a good stop for fishing, trapping, and trading with local Native American tribes. More than a century later, in 1832, Nathan Boone, the youngest son of American pioneer and frontiersman Daniel Boone, was hired by the territorial governor to find a neutral area where Native Americans being moved West could safely hunt and fish. He spent considerable time at Clear Lake, describing the region as rich with elk, bison, fox, otter, and other wildlife. “It was a haven,” Schumacher said. In 1851, James Dickirson and Joseph Hewitt set out from Strawberry Point, Iowa, after hearing tales of the great bison herds around Clear Lake — nearly a hundred of them, each weighing close to a ton. Their arrival marked the beginning of Clear Lake’s permanent community, and over the next two decades, it grew.

The Chautauqua Era and the ‘Saratoga of the West’ By the late 19th century, Clear Lake’s appeal shifted from natural resources to culture and recreation. From 1875 to 1914, the town hosted Iowa’s largest Chautauqua — a summer gathering that brought speakers, musicians, and demonstrations to thousands of visitors each year. Passenger trains carried families to the camp meeting grounds, where they pitched tents or stayed in cabins along the lake. Clear Lake soon earned a new nickname: “The Saratoga of the West,” a nod to Saratoga Springs, New York, a resort community famed for its restorative atmosphere. 8 • DESTINATION CLEAR LAKE

Changing Attractions When the Chautauqua ended in 1917, Bayside Amusement Park opened, reflecting changing tastes. Visitors flocked to roller coasters, ball fields, and lakeside amusements instead of lectures and concerts. White Pier, with its large downtown dance hall, became a hub for social gatherings before it was destroyed by a tornado in 1931. Throughout these changes, the lake itself remained at the center of activity, supporting swimming, boating, and fishing for residents and visitors alike. In the 1930s, Clear Lake shifted its branding from “Saratoga of the West” to “Iowa’s Vacation Capital,” a slogan that stuck for decades. The mid-20th century saw Clear Lake cement its identity as a tourist town, garnering statewide attention through marquee

legacy. The North Iowa Cultural Center and Museum, the nonprofit responsible for operating the historic venue, preserved its character while keeping it vibrant through concerts, conferences, and special events that draw visitors from around the world. The venue remains a living reminder that in Clear Lake, the music still lives.

Tourism Then and Now As the decades rolled on, Clear Lake continued to reinvent itself as a gathering place for every season. The 1970s brought massive snowmobile and ice boat races, and that same spirit of community and celebration continues today through a packed calendar of events that keeps Clear Lake bustling year-round. Signature events like TRI Clear Lake, Thursdays on Main, the Fourth of July Celebration, and Harvest Festival bring tens of thousands of visitors to town each year. According to the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce, its community events contributed $20 million to the local economy in 2024, a figure that doesn’t even include additional tourism spending from fishing tournaments, sailing regattas, or weekend visitors who come simply to enjoy the lake.

“We’ve got a charming community on a really lovely lake.” Beth Ann Schumacher Modern tourism in Clear Lake also looks different than it did a generation ago. While hotels continue to welcome guests, the rise of vacation rentals and short-term stays has changed how visitors experience the community. Many families now stay for a week or more, supporting local restaurants, retailers, and attractions in ways that extend well beyond the summer months. The Chamber has worked to build on that momentum by promoting Clear Lake as a four-season destination, with winter events like Christmas by the Lake and the Color the Wind Kite Festival drawing national attention. “The draw is the lake,” Schumacher said. “The lake always provides something, whether it's fishing and hunting around it or camping around it or swimming in it, and we build on that. The lake is the important component here. It's our ace in the hole.”

A Legacy That Lasts Standing on the lakeshore today, it’s easy to see why. The same water that once drew French trappers and Native traders now reflects sailboats, festivals, and families making new memories. “There’s always something happening that will draw people here,” Schumacher said. “We’ve got a charming community on a really lovely lake. It tells you something about why people want to come here. There’s just something magical about it.” events. Governor’s Days began in 1938, drawing Iowa’s top officials and large crowds for political and social gatherings. From 1950 to 1964, the Miss Iowa Pageant, sponsored by the Junior Chamber of Commerce, brought glamour and statewide attention to the community. In 1953, both events were held during the same week, giving the city a double dose of excitement. The Surf Ballroom became another cornerstone of Clear Lake’s identity. Built during the Big Band era, it hosted legends like Glenn Miller and Lawrence Welk and became a hub for music lovers across the Midwest. In 1959, it gained international recognition as the final concert venue for Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson before the tragic plane crash north of town — a moment forever remembered as “The Day the Music Died.” In the years since, the Surf has become a symbol of resilience and DESTINATION CLEAR LAKE • 9

ROCK 'N' ROLL Road Trip Canadian Buddy Holly fan makes somber pilgrimage to Clear Lake by Dustin A. Woods

Back in grade school when other kids were listening to songs like "Baby Beluga" and "Wheels on the Bus," I was poring over my parents' classic record collection. Sifting through dusty old boxes of vinyl, I would sit cross-legged on the floor, as I haphazardly traced back to the roots of rock ‘n' roll one crackly old record at a time. Carefully placing the needle down would magically unveil a whole new world of discovery and wonder. I would study the jackets, looking for clues of who these musicians and groups were. The greatest revelation of all was the discovery of a boy from Lubbock, Texas, named Charles Hardin Holley, known famously as Buddy Holly. I obsessively consumed his relatively prolific body of work. By then I had become vaguely familiar with gospel, blues, country and western, but this was all of them put together in a melodic collection of sounds that was unlike anything I’d ever heard before. Even now I can’t help but wonder how a middle-class kid from Lubbock cosmically channeled sounds that defied genre, race, space and time in only a few short years. The curiosity and excitement continued to swell before crashing down with the discovery of his premature and tragic death. Over the years, I have sought out every possible piece of work related to his life, including books, albums, and documentaries. The more I learned, the more heart-wrenching his story became. The fact that he had just recently been married and was expecting a child, that his trusted band had parted ways, and he had only joined the ill-fated Winter Dance Party 14 • DESTINATION CLEAR LAKE

tour out of necessity because his agent had tied up all his money in other investments. And perhaps most notably that his life was so violently cut short in the horrific and mysterious crash of a small plane that should never have taken off in the first place. In addition to our optical challenges and mutual fondness for fine suits and music, Buddy Holly and I also share a common passion for motorcycles. He was famously turned away from a Harley-Davidson dealership by a salesman who thought he wasn’t old enough to afford a motorcycle, so he purchased an Ariel Cyclone from a neighboring shop instead. Over the last 20 years, I have been reviewing motorcycles and creating travel content for a variety of outlets. Having a Harley-Davidson Street Glide to review and some free time on my calendar this summer, I dedicated my vacation to making a somber pilgrimage to prominent locations in Buddy Holly's life and final days.

I wanted to learn more about the man, how he lived, and see where he played his last show. I also felt deeply compelled to pay my respects where his life came to an end and see his final resting place. My trip would include the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland, Ohio, and Lubbock, Texas, to see where Buddy Holly spent his formative years, visit the modest Buddy Holly Center, see the performing arts center that bears his name and pay my respects at his statue and humble grave site, followed by the Surf Ballroom and the infamous crash site. Criss-crossing the country on a beautiful new motorcycle in the summer heat, I couldn’t help imagining the struggle members of the Winter Dance Party endured making the trip in a rickety old bus in the icy depths of winter in 1959. Following the streets bearing the names of Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson, I approached the legendary Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake. Entering the historic building felt like traveling back in time. If rock ‘n' roll is to be considered a religion of sorts, the Surf is surely holy ground. I spent hours looking at every photograph and piece

of memorabilia, digesting information about each of the musicians’ tragically short careers and details about that fateful February night. Standing on the very stage where Holly played his final song and walking through the very dressing room where the infamous coin flip was made felt otherworldly. Seeing the phone booth where Buddy Holly made his last call to his wife, Elena, and Elwin Musser’s camera that captured the scenes of the iconic crash brought the stories I had read about into vivid reality. My physical and spiritual journey took me to the Three Stars Plaza musical installation, followed by a visit to the new "Not Fade Away" exhibit, then the Mason City Airport where the doomed flight departed from before culminating in quiet contemplation at the crash site. Witnessing retired couples, teenagers, and families with young kids also travel vast distances to pay their own respects at the Surf Ballroom and crash site memorial, I have comfort that Holly, Valens, and Richardson’s music will continue to be heard and enjoyed by future generations.

A stainless-steel guitar and three records stand where the plane came to rest, honoring the rock ’n’ roll pioneers whose final show was at the Surf Ballroom. Fans from around the world visit year-round, leaving flowers, notes, and guitar picks along the fence line in tribute. Getting There: The memorial is located at Gull Avenue and 315th Street, about five miles north of Clear Lake. Look for the large Buddy Holly glasses marking the entrance. Park at the Don McLean Parking Area, where you’ll find restrooms and bottled water for a donation, then follow the half-mile trail west to the site.

FISHING Clear Lake is a 3684-acre natural glacial lake with exceptional fishing all year long. Maximum depths range from 18 feet in the main lake to about 30 feet in the Little Lake and there are no motoring restrictions. Amenities at Clear Lake include boat access, fishing jetty, accessible pier, boat rental, picnic areas, beaches, trails, accessible facilities, playgrounds, restrooms, camping, hard surface boat ramps and fish cleaning station.

Fishing Forecast

Walleye angling has been excellent the past few seasons. There are good numbers of 15-17 inch Walleye for anglers to harvest. The Yellow Bass population has improved some, but still is much lower than the fishery supported a decade or so ago. The size quality of Yellow Bass is very good. Crappie are doing well in Clear Lake. Anglers consistently catch crappie during all seasons or angling. Muskellunge angling remains excellent. Channel Catfish is another species worth targeting on Clear Lake.

Fishing Regulations

Clear Lake has a protected slot limit on Walleye. All fish 17-22 inches must be immediately released unharmed. For more regulations, visit iowadnr.gov/fishing or pick up a fishing regulations brochure at the Visitor Center or DNR office.

Record-Setting Action on the Water Clear Lake made waves in September 2025 as the host of the Professional Muskie Tournament Trail (PMTT) Recon Boats World Championship, drawing the top 50 teams in the nation for three thrilling days of competition. Anglers battled it out and Clear Lake delivered, setting a new Championship record and an All-Time Event Record with 126 muskies caught and released.

The Birth of a Nation A new country declares its independence. Settlers will later arrive at a glacial lake in northern Iowa, drawn by open skies, fertile land, and the promise of freedom.

America Finds its Rhythm In the depths of the Depression, hope takes the stage. The original Surf Ballroom opens, filling the air with music, laughter and light.

"Not Fade Away" Rock 'n' roll roars across America and into Clear Lake. The Surf Ballroom hosts Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson in a legendary concert.

The Snyder family purchases the Surf Ballroom and begins an extensive restoration, preserving its historic character and keeping it a place where the music lives for generations to come.

Investing in the Future Clear Lake secures more than $4.7 million in public funding through Destination Iowa and Community Attraction and Tourism grants to develop the Surf District and enhance visitor experiences.

CLEAR LAKE'S PARKS

Clear Lake’s park system spans 80 acres of green space, playgrounds, and picnic spots across town. Families can cool off at two splash pads, and City Park still has the merry-go-round and log cabin that have been keeping kids entertained for generations. With modern playgrounds and plenty of room to play, Clear Lake’s parks are made for family fun all year long.

Armour Pugh Memorial Park

100 Shorewood Way | A peaceful neighborhood park with modern playground equipment and an accessible shelter, perfect for a quick picnic or playtime stop just off the highway. Historic Note: The park honors Armour Pugh, a Clear Lake businessman and Parks Commission member whose dedication to expanding recreational spaces shaped the community. After his passing in 1968, the City named the park in recognition of his lasting service.

City Beach Park

South Lakeview Dr. | Soak up the sun, splash, and swim right in the heart of Clear Lake. City Park

Lakeview Dr. | A downtown landmark since 1856, City Park is the centerpiece of Clear Lake’s community gatherings and celebrations. The park offers playgrounds for all ages—including a ship-themed structure and the vintage domed merry-go-round—plus picnic areas and restrooms open year-round. With its shady trees, lake views, and central location, it’s a favorite spot for relaxing, meeting friends, or catching live music at the bandshell. Historic Note: City Park has been a cornerstone of Clear Lake life for generations. In 1873, residents came together on May Day to

plant 1,500 trees—each marked with the planter’s name—creating a green oasis that became the town’s pride. The open-air gazebo, built in 1919, hosted early band concerts led by Music Man John Kopecky, who taught a young Meredith Willson and founded the North Iowa Band Festival. In 1955, a sail-shaped bandshell designed by Edward Novak replaced the original structure, later renamed to honor longtime Municipal Band Director Ludvig Wangberg. The bandshell recently received a facelift and it continues to serve as a living stage for the city’s music and memories. Monuments nearby also honor Clear Lake’s Civil War veterans, adding another layer of history to this beloved park.

Country Club Heights Park

18th St. W. & W. 5th Ave. N. | A peaceful neighborhood park with swings, slides, a basketball hoop, and a climbing wall, surrounded by a community butterfly garden.

D.A.R. Park

Wesley Dr. | A neighborhood park that blends history and play, featuring new playground equipment, swings, a merry-go-round, and a historic grindstone that nods to Clear Lake’s past. Historic Note: In 1925, the Clear Lake Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution purchased this property—the site of the 1876 pavilion where early Chautauqua meetings were held. In 1960, the chapter gifted the park to the City of Clear Lake, preserving it as a public space that continues to honor community and heritage.

Everybody Plays Park

109 S. 15th St. | An inclusive play space designed for all ages and abilities, featuring accessible equipment, innovative play structures, and interactive learning experiences. The splash pad operates daily from Memorial Day through Labor Day, 10 a.m. – 8 p.m.

Fieldstone Park

14th Place N. | A family-friendly neighborhood park featuring swings, a funnel ball game, dome climber, and four-seat bouncer. A newer shelter with picnic tables and a grill makes it ideal for picnics, and the butterfly sundial adds a playful touch of charm. DESTINATION CLEAR LAKE • 31

Freedom Rock Park

2 N. 8th St. | thefreedomrock.com | A patriotic stop celebrating art and service, Freedom Rock Park is home to one of Iowa’s 99 Freedom Rocks and a Cache Clear Lake geocache location. The mural honors Congressional Medal of Honor recipient Captain Henry Irving Smith, connecting Clear Lake to this statewide tribute. Freedom Rock maps are available at the Clear Lake Visitor Center.

MacGowan Park

500 10th Ave. N. | A spacious, tree-shaded park perfect for gatherings, featuring a handicap-accessible shelter with picnic tables, restrooms, and electrical service. Playgrounds, swings, and horseshoe pits make it a favorite for both families and friends looking to relax or play a game outdoors. Historic Note: MacGowan Park was donated by Mollie MacGowan, the daughter of Clear Lake pioneers Henry and Ella MacGowan. A lifelong educator and community member, she taught math and Latin for more than two decades before her passing in 1945. Her gift of this park continues to provide a welcoming gathering place for generations of Clear Lakers.

Marian Park

1209 2nd Ave. N. | A versatile neighborhood park made up of three distinct areas: a baseball diamond for games, a quiet green space for picnics, and a playground for families. In winter, the open field transforms into an ice-skating rink with a cozy warming house for skaters.

Outdoor Recreation Complex and Dog Park

1720 12th Ave. S. | A 30+ acre multi-use green space designed for all kinds of recreation, featuring soccer fields, a 9-hole disc golf course, and a fenced dog park with separate areas for large and small dogs. Enjoy a ¾-mile paved trail for walking, biking, or skating, a ½-mile StoryWalk®, brand-new playground and a picnic shelter that make the O.R.C. a favorite for families, athletes, and four-legged friends alike.

Pine Tree Park

2401 S. Shore Dr. | Clear Lake’s largest park, Pine Tree Park offers something for everyone with two playgrounds (including one for toddlers), sand volleyball courts, a ball diamond, and a basketball hoop. The spacious grounds include a shelter with picnic tables, new ADA family restroom, electrical service, and grills, plus plenty of open space and shaded picnic spots perfect for gatherings and play.

474 North Shore Dr. | Located half a block west of the Surf Ballroom, this striking plaza features a glowing record spindle sculpture that honors the three stars—Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. “The Big Bopper” Richardson. Their music plays softly as the sculpture lights up at night with neon color. Three Stars Plaza is also a Cache Clear Lake geocache location, inviting visitors to explore and connect with Clear Lake’s musical legacy.

1600 South Shore Dr. | A lakeside favorite with plenty of room to play, featuring newer playground equipment, two sand volleyball courts, and a spacious shelter built by the Clear Lake Noon Lions Club.
