ThecentralthreadwoventhroughthetapestryofUpadrasta'slifeishisunshakeablebelief thatfreedomofexpressionisthevery"preconditionfordemocracyandlastingpeace".6 This isnomereacademictheory;itisaphilosophyhehaslivedoutontheglobalstage.Asa peaceenvoyanddiplomat,hehastransformedinternationalpeacemeetingsandpress conferencesintopowerfulpulpits,crusadingforamorehumaneGenevaConventionand championingtheradicalideaof"anintellectualparliament"forallofhumanity.5 Hisquiet, "non-violentstruggle"hasbeenaforceagainstthegrowingtideofauthoritarianism,a commitmentsoprofoundthatitearnedhimaKoreanpeaceprizein2013forexposingthe
abuseofpowerinplaceslikeChina,thePhilippines,andRussia.6
