Orange orthodontics practice to rebrand, open new office in early ‘27 A. KEVIN CORVO

t was first as a patient that Dr. Shira Tor experienced the transformation orthodontics can create, especially for a seventh-grade girl conscious of a front-tooth space. Today, Tor and her associate, Dr. Elizabeth Blake Swearingen, are growing their orthodontics practice to be rebranded Tor Ortho as a new, larger office opens next year at a new site in Orange. Current offices are at 3755 Orange Place, Suite 100A, in Orange and 7055 Pearl Road, Suite 100, in Middleburg Heights. Tor The new Orange office is expected to be a 5,516-square-foot, single-story, ground-up facility. The Middleburg Heights office and Orange offices have operated as Weiss and Tor Orthodontics. Dr. Ira Weiss, who has retired, is the orthodontist who inspired Tor’s career in orthodontics. “My connection to orthodontics began in seventh grade, when I became painfully aware of the large space between my front teeth,” Tor told the Cleveland Jewish News. “I was so self-conscious that I hid my smile when I laughed or spoke. I begged my mom to take me to an orthodontist, and

after a few consultations, she chose Dr. Weiss.” Neither of Tor’s older brothers needed orthodontics, so it was a new experience for Tor and her mother. “The day my braces went on, I felt a shift,” Tor said. “My teeth had not changed yet, but I no longer felt I had to hide them. I became fascinated by the profession and knew I wanted to give other people the confidence Dr. Weiss had given me.” From that point forward, Tor walked a path toward dental school and an orthodontic residency. In dental school, Tor spent time with an orthodontist who treated patients with cleft lip and palate and other craniofacial conditions. “She inspired me to complete a hospital-based general practice residency, where I gained experience caring for patients with complex medical needs. I then completed a three-year orthodontic residency focused on comprehensive treatment,” Tor said. After graduating, Tor had the opportunity to join Weiss’ practice as his associate. “We worked side by side for 10 years. I eventually bought into the practice and later became its sole owner,” Tor said. Today, Dr. Elizabeth Blake Swearingen, known as Dr. Blake, is helping to grow the practice. Blake joined the practice in 2025. “Our east side office has served us well, but it was time for

a refresh (and) a space that reflects the culture, excitement, and energy our team and patients bring to it every day,” Tor said. Tor found land not far from the first office and will launch the name upon the opening of the new office, continuing as one of Northeast Ohio’s leading Invisalign providers, she said. “The new office will give us room to offer the latest technology, including fully customized 3D-printed braces,” Tor said. The new office is expected to begin welcoming patients in January 2027. “What matters most to me, though, is that we look beyond straight teeth,” Tor said. “We consider each patient’s airway health, growth and individual needs so we can build a strong foundation for a beautiful, lasting smile. “That personal approach goes back to my own experience as a seventh grader. I know how much a smile can change the way someone feels about themselves.” Tor and her husband, Jeremy, have three children and reside in Pepper Pike. They are congregants of Congregation Mishkan Or in Beachwood.

A Personal Approach to Healthy Smiles By Tom Rodriguez, DMD, MSD If you’ve been referred to a periodontist and aren’t quite sure what to expect, I’d like to introduce myself. I’m Dr. Tom Rodriguez. I grew up on Cleveland’s west side and stayed close to home for all my training at Case Western Reserve University, where I met my wife, Melanie, during dental school. Today, I live in Solon, where I practice at NEO Periodontics & Dental Implants. My goal is to provide exceptional periodontal and implant care close to home for fellow Clevelanders. At our practice, we care for the foundations of a healthy smile: your gums and the bone that supports your teeth. We aim to help you keep your natural teeth healthy for as long as possible, with care ranging from gum disease treatment and gum grafting to dental implants when teeth need to be replaced. Just as important as the treatment is the conversation. We take time to explain what we find, discuss your options, and help you feel heard and confident about your care. You should feel welcome to ask questions, whether you’re concerned about your gums or considering an implant. One Simple Tip: Be Gentle With Your Gums Brushing harder isn’t the goal; too much pressure can contribute to gum recession. I recommend choosing an electric toothbrush with a built-in pressure sensor that alerts you when you’re pressing too hard, helping you develop a gentler touch. Use a soft-bristled brush head rather than scrubbing firmly at the gumline. And if you notice your gums receding, ask your dentist or periodontist to check the cause and review your brushing technique. Your gums will thank you.

We’d be happy to answer your questions. Learn more at neopdi.com.

Little Fox Pediatric Dentistry celebrates first anniversary MARTHA SOROHAN msorohan@cjn.org

S

ome of Dr. Kelsey Stehli’s youngest patients at Little Fox Pediatric Dentistry in Lyndhurst are months away from cutting their first teeth. They come at the recommendation of lactation consultants or feeding therapists, who suspect these tiny patients are tongue-tied, Stehli explained. Sometimes, a newborn’s inability to suck is due to the tongue being tied to the floor of the mouth. A quick laser zap usually solves the problem. “Dr. Kelsey,” as she likes to be called, is celebrating the first anniversary of Little Fox Pediatric Dentistry at 29000 Cedar Road in a bright woodland-themed office, where a bold artificial tree trunk centers the waiting room, and a rope swing hangs in one corner. “I want people to feel like they are walking into an enchanted forest,” she said. Even the patient couches face tall windows. “I don’t want the children to feel trapped,” Stehli said. “I want it to be open and as inviting as possible. Sometimes kids will even sprint down the hall.” Little Fox Pediatric Dentistry serves patients through high school age and offers preventive care including cleanings, X-rays, plaque and tartar removal, fluoride treatment and dental sealants, as well as restorative fillings and crowns. A Mantua native who graduated from The Ohio State University College of Dentistry in Columbus with a specialty

training through Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Stehli has been a board-certified pediatric dentist for five years. Former chief resident at Rainbow Babies & Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, she practiced pediatric dentistry in Hudson before deciding to open an office closer to her home in Cleveland Heights. The commute to Hudson, however, inspired Stehli’s business’ name. Learning that many forest-oriented names she wanted were taken, she spotted a red fox running along the road one day, and the name Little Fox was born. The office mascot, a plush 2-foot-tall upright red fox named Flossie, gifted from an orthodontist, stands near the large examination room with two patient couches to accommodate families who want to stay together during exams. Though most of her young patients come for their first visit around age 18 months, Stehli recommends starting dental visits at 12 months or earlier, when the first tooth appears. “These appointments are almost informational, about what to expect and watching out for bad habits,” Stehli said. Family- and comfort-focused, with a ready smile, Stehli often examines her young patients while in their mothers’ laps, leaning back and holding her gaze. For special needs patients, Stehli has a designated quiet room away from bright lights and the hum of vibrating dental equipment. “We try to make it as easy as possible to meet everyone where they are,” she said. “Some kids struggle, and may even need to go home and come back. No matter what, I try my hardest. I don’t want kids to be afraid of going to the dentist. I want to make it as positive as I can.”

legant Endodontics, a new specialty dental practice focused on root canal treatments and patient comfort, opened in May at 6200 SOM Center Road, Suite D13, in Solon. The practice offers specialized endodontic care, including diagnosing dental pain, root canal treatment and retreatment, with an emphasis on creating Segal a comfortable and welcoming environment for patients. “I started Elegant Endodontics with the question, ‘What if we could completely change the way people experience a root canal treatment?’” Julia Segal, founder of Elegant Endodontics, told the Cleveland Jewish News. “Root canal treatments have long been associated with fear, discomfort and anxiety. I wanted to challenge that perception.” The practice combines advanced dental technology with personalized care and offers same-day emergency availability and Sunday appointments. “Dental pain doesn’t follow a convenient schedule,” Segal said. “It can interrupt work, family life, travel and important moments. We believe patients shouldn’t have to rearrange their lives or endure unnecessary

pain while waiting for specialized care.” The office was designed with a spainspired atmosphere rather than a traditional clinical setting. Patients can choose from complimentary amenities, including blankets, neck pillows, aromatherapy, noise-canceling headphones and music. “We take the time to understand each patient’s concerns, explain their treatment and create an experience built around their individual needs,” she said. A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine in Philadelphia, the founder completed a general practice residency and worked as a general dentist in the Philadelphia area before pursuing specialty training in endodontics at Nova Southeastern University College of Dental Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She said her interest in diagnosis and the precision of root canal treatment inspired her to specialize in endodontics. The practice also focuses on patients who experience dental anxiety, with an emphasis on helping them feel comfortable throughout their appointments. “Some arrive having spent days worrying about their appointment,” Segal said. “Seeing those same patients leave smiling, relieved and surprised by how comfortable everything was is incredibly rewarding.” She credited her team, including lead patient experience coordinator Emely ELEGANT | CONTINUED ON PAGE 45

Hernandez and dental assistant lead Sabrina Smith, with helping create the practice’s patient-centered environment. The practice also provides referring dentists with detailed treatment reports and follows up with patients within 24 to 48 hours after treatment. “Technology can be purchased. Equipment can be upgraded. But a truly exceptional patient experience has to be built into the culture of a practice,” she said. Opening the practice has been both challenging and rewarding, allowing her to rethink how a specialty dental office operates. Looking ahead, she hopes to continue improving patient experiences and making specialized endodontic care more accessible. “I don’t want Elegant Endodontics to simply grow,” Segal said. “I want it to continually get better.”

Career change to dentistry fueled by college exam JIMMY OSWALD joswald@cjn.org

I

t was a poor score on a biology exam in college that led to the eventual creation of NEO Periodontics & Dental Implants in Solon. The practice’s founder, Dr. Tom Rodriguez, was attending undergraduate school at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and was looking to go into the medical field, but that single bad test performance had the North Olmsted High School graduate reconsidering his career path. “So, I went to Case’s career center and took a test that basically matches your personality to a field,” Rodriguez told the Cleveland Jewish News. “My No. 1 result was farmer, so I looked pretty heavily into that but didn’t think the outlook was there and wasn’t sure what farming was going to look like in the United States in 20 years. My No. 2 result was dentistry.” Rodriguez had never considered the field, but with its proximity to the medical world, decided to investigate further. He shadowed Dr. Thomas Bilski, owner of Bilski Dental in Independence, and said he was “instantly sold.” “I thought it seemed awesome,” Rodriguez said, adding he liked the work-life balance that the cosmetic dentist and dental implantologist had along with the work itself. Rodriguez completed his undergraduate education at Case Western Reserve University,

earning his bachelor’s in psychology. He chose to stay at CWRU for dental school, noting he already liked the university and was further enticed by a new dental facility they were opening that he could use. He earned his Doctor of Dental Medicine degree, and he was recognized with the Dental Benefits Scholarship for academic achievement and clinical excellence, and inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon, the national dental honor society reserved for students graduating in the top 10% of their class. “I was really committed to general dentistry,” he said. “I got my dream job coming out of dental school and got to work in Westlake with Dr. (Stephen) Cooke. But the problem was that I always wanted to do something surgical, but going into my fourth year of dental school, COVID hit. It wiped out around six months of dental school training. So, now all this time that I was gonna spend freely exploring what aspect of dentistry I really liked was spent racing to get requirements done.” While Rodriguez enjoyed working with Cooke, he didn’t find it as rewarding as practicing dental surgery, which he had gotten a taste of while in dental school under his mentor, Dr. Denver Jenkins. “If I did a really good job in general dentistry, I would feel a little sense of accomplishment but it was more like relief,” he said. “When I did CHANGE | CONTINUED ON PAGE 47

surgical work, even the hardest sessions, I felt energy afterwards. I didn’t feel drained. That was what pushed me into the surgical field.” Rodriguez completed his specialty training in periodontics, the specialty of dentistry that focuses on the structures that support the tooth including gum disease and bone, at Case Western Reserve University, graduating from the periodontics residency program earlier this year. “Periodontics is a little unique,” he said. “It’s colloquially known as plastic surgery in the mouth, and I really like that attention to the small details because it ties back to what I really enjoy in life, which is art.” Rodriguez’s artistic touch comes from his mother, and all of the paintings that line the walls of NEO Periodontics & Dental Implant were either produced by the periodontist himself or his mother. For Rodriguez, staying in Cleveland was a no-brainer as he wanted to be able to provide treatment to “his people.” “I’ve always been here, have never left and never will leave,” he said. “I want to give these people world-class care. I want to be the doctor that I wanted as a kid and would want as an adult: One that listens and is aware that the patient is a person.” Opening his own practice was a “difficult decision,” Rodriguez explained, as there are plenty of advantages to joining an already established practice. But he said he wanted to start his own brand under his own name and not be limited on what he could turn his operation into. “I can really make this place what I want,” he said. “That’s my personality and the energy I have. I’m constantly making changes, which is what I love to do. It doesn’t mean I eventually might not add people and continue to grow. But I’ve always

heard from elder doctors that having your own practice is like having your own baby. They talk about it like being a kid they raised and say it was a huge part of their life, and I wanted to experience that and invest in myself.” NEO Periodontics & Dental Implants opened Sept. 15 at 30575 Bainbridge Road, Suite 180, in Solon. Rodriguez grew up in Cleveland’s western suburbs and met his wife, Dr. Melanie Adelstein, also a dentist, while they were in dental school. Afterward, he worked as a dentist in Mentor, giving him further exposure to the eastern suburbs, where Melanie grew up in Solon. “Solon’s a great area,” he said. “I really saw a need for this specialty not only in this area, but circumferentially in the east in general. We’re in a pretty central part of the area, close off the highway, and we are in a pretty large space that gives us the ability to expand so we can treat more people over time. I’d even love to make an educational aspect of my practice at some point, and this building gives us that opportunity.” According to its website, NEO Periodontics & Dental Implants’ services span the full range of periodontal care – gum disease treatment, deep cleanings, gum grafting, pocket reduction surgery, guided tissue regeneration and more. It also offers implant solutions, including single implants, bone grafting, sinus lifts and full arch restorations. The practice has six employees, including Rodriguez’s sister, who is a surgical assistant. The space has a spacious lobby, a consultation room, a surgical room, a CAT scan machine and a 3D printer. Ultimately, Rodriguez hopes to grow NEO Periodontics & Dental Implants into a destination practice, much like Cleveland Clinic, attracting patients from near and far for specialized care. “I don’t know if periodontics will ever get there, but I want to have that level of expertise and skill purely for the patient’s

sake,” he said. “It’s always going to be a slow build because as a specialist, practitioners are sending you their patients. It’s almost like they’re temporarily giving them to you. You handle the issues then send them back for long-term care. That’s a big weight that I don’t take for granted at all, they’re trusting me with an aspect of their patient’s care. I have a big responsibility on my part to do the best that I can to get them back healthy or correct an issue and move them along in the rest of their treatment.” Publisher’s Note: Dr. Melanie Adelstein is the niece of Kevin S. Brace yourself, orthodontia may be in your future SHANNON MORTLAND

F

or many children, middle school was often marked with the inevitable first visit to the orthodontist to determine if braces might be in their future. Times have changed and that rite of passage now occurs in elementary school, around age seven. Many patients won’t need treatment that young, but early treatment can help avoid much more challenging orthodontics later, said Dr. Jordan Roth of J. Roth Orthodontics in Lyndhurst. The typical age that children used to have their first orthodontist appointment was between 12 and 14 years old, after most of their permanent teeth came in, but there are many advantages to starting young. “This philosophy focuses on early intervention for children between the ages of seven and 10, a critical window when the jaw and facial structures are still actively growing,” Dr. Eric S. Lawrence of Lawrence Family Orthodontics in Lyndhurst, said. “By taking advantage of this natural development, orthodontists can address underlying structural issues early, rather than waiting to fix more severe crowding and alignment problems later in adolescence.” Lawrence boils treatment down to two phases. The first phase takes about a year and has four main focuses: • Widening the dental arches to create adequate space for the permanent teeth to achieve more favorable positions.

Bomeli

Lawrence

Roth

• Improving oral muscle function and breathing patterns. • Guiding facial and jaw growth. • Aligning key permanent teeth. Phase two consists of the child wearing a retainer as needed and monitoring the arrival of their permanent teeth. “The goal is not simply to straighten teeth,” Lawrence added. “It is to take advantage of a child’s growth and development to achieve a healthy, functional and attractive result while minimizing the need for more extensive treatment later in life.” Adults need braces, too. While children often come to mind when braces are mentioned, one in three orthodontic patients is an adult, according to the American Association of Orthodontists. Getting braces as an adult often starts because a person

mentions to their dentist that they don’t like their smile, Dr. Philip Bomeli, an orthodontist at Solon Orthodontics, said. “It might start with aesthetic concerns, but they find out that their teeth are in the wrong place,” he said. “The mouth is not immune to the changes in our bodies as we age. Teeth might move along with the bone.” Among the other reasons adults seek orthodontic treatment are crowded teeth, misaligned jaws, prerestorative needs and airway concerns, said Roth, who noted that many of the adults in his practice are using clear aligners that are more discreet, comfortable and removable for special events. The cost of braces ranges from about $3,000 to $10,000 and the average amount of time a person needs to wear braces is 18-24 months, depending on the difficulty of the case, according to the association. Wearing braces could have huge implications later, including limiting the need to remove teeth or get dentures, Bomeli said. “We are living longer these days and people are keeping their natural teeth longer. It’s important to take care of those teeth so you can still have them down the road,” he said. “We want to try to save them because there is no substitute for a natural, permanent tooth.” Shannon Mortland is a freelance journalist.

topic that is sure to spark a lively debate in any circle is the cost of medical care. For those undergoing dental procedures there are two ways to help keep those costs down. One is using dental insurance and the other is leaning into a dental discount plan. Dental insurance plans operate in a fairly familiar way to anyone who has had a medical insurance plan. You pay a monthly premium for coverage and then, when treatment or care is needed, it is generally available with the patient paying a percentage-based rate for the procedure. With a dental discount plan, the patient pays a modest monthly membership fee. When they then need to use a dental discount they are able to take advantage of a preferred, discounted rate when paying their dental provider. Dental insurance is a good option for people who need extended services like cavities filled, teeth extracted or a root canal. Using dental discounts though can be a good option for people who have good oral health and want to maintain that with yearly X-rays and standard six-month checkups. According to information provided by the patient insurance coordinators at Obermeier, Adelstein & Associates with offices in Beachwood and Medina the benefits of dental insurance include “Coverage of 100% of routine preventive care (things like cleanings, exams, X-rays) on most standard plans. (It also) helps pay for a large chunk (typically 20% to 50%) of major services like root canals and crowns.” The team at Obermeier, Adelstein & Associates said the benefits of a dental discount plan include “affordable annual

fees (often around $80 to $200 per year) and no waiting periods, deductibles, or claim forms.” “Discounts typically range from 10% to 60% on routine and major work,” they said. “Dental discount plans often include discounts on cosmetic procedures that traditional insurance ignores.” Before making a selection on what might be a better program for your dental care needs, there are other factors to take into consideration as well. With dental insurance there is often a waiting period you must go through before certain coverages begin. That means that you generally can’t sign up for insurance in the morning and expect to have coverage for a filling you are getting that afternoon. Most benefits are also capped so if you have extensive dental work that needs to be completed, the insurance will pay up to a pre-set amount and then, after that, as the patient you will be responsible for the cost of any payments over that limit. If you choose to get involved in a dental discount plan, you will pay the dentist for any work they completed in a visit. You’ll then collect all of your paperwork and submit it to the plan administrator who will send you a reimbursement. And this system only works when you visit a dental professional who is in the plan’s set network. As with any musically-based decision, you don’t want to rush into a plan. Every dental insurance or discount plan has specific nuances included within their general framework. It is important to understand these differences along with knowing your own oral health needs before enrolling in either option. Noell Wolfgram Evans is a freelance journalist.

Cosmetic dentistry can enhance smiles, function and oral health NOELL WOLFGRAM EVANS

S

ocial media has driven many people to re-evaluate a number of things about themselves. Everything from the way that a home is decorated to what a person’s smile says about them has been argued over in Facebook posts and TikTok videos. But just because it’s more prevalent in the discourse doesn’t mean that a focus on the look of our teeth is anything new. “People’s concerns over their smiles have always been present, social media has only increased the exposure to options like cosmetic dentistry,” Dr. Margaret Frankel of Richards Frankel Dentistry in Mayfield Heights said. But cosmetic dentistry is not just about beauty, but improving health and functionality as well. The term cosmetic dentistry covers both aesthetic dental work and work that is more health focused, although Frankel said that “all dentistry should be aesthetic.” She explained that anytime you have work done on your teeth you want the end

result to look good. “Some patients come to me for things as mild as their teeth are no longer white or they may not like the shape of their teeth or see gaps,” Frankel said. “Many times that is a result of a change in their oral health. A patient may come in because they think they need cosmetic dentistry, but we need to address their oral health first. You can’t build a new home on a poor foundation. What we do is work to re-establish a healthy mouth, that is also a beautiful mouth.” As with any medically-based procedure, every cosmetic dentistry patient will undergo a treatment plan that is specific to them. At a visit with a specialist they’ll develop a long-term treatment plan. Sometimes that plan may involve other medical professionals which could include the services of a plastic surgeon. “Treatment processes have sequences and phases to help get a patient healthy,” Frankel said. The benefits of cosmetic dentistry can be experienced by patients of all ages. As an example, Frankel cited a young child who

“When you make some of these changes, you can be healthier, breathe better and see a better outcome to your overall health.” Margaret Frankel Richards Frankel Dentistry broke their tooth in a bike accident. “It might take just a couple of visits to repair that tooth and give that child a renewed sense of self and confidence,” Frankel said. And that restoration of a patient’s confidence is what’s really at the heart of any cosmetic dentistry procedure. Whether you are making an aesthetic change or having a procedure done that is health-focused, a cosmetic dentistry procedure can be “life changing” according to Frankel.

“When you make some of these changes, you can be healthier, breathe better and see a better outcome to your overall health,” Frankel said. And sharing that new smile with the world has mental health benefits as well. “When you physically guard your smile it negatively impacts your happiness,” Frankel said. hile it has existed for decades, pediatric dentistry is still not 440-461-6390 quite a household name for many parents. But a highly-trained professional in both dental and child psychological development can make all the difference for both oral health and a child’s lifelong view of a trip to the dentist. “It’s been around for a long time,” Dr. Jeffrey Berlin of Berlin Pediatric Dentistry in Pepper Pike, said. “I went to a pediatric dentist as a child and I’m 40 years old. We focus a lot on dental growth and development; special needs and patients with medically complex [conditions]; and also behavior management - a simple procedure on a squirmy 5-year-old is sometimes not a simple procedure.” Dr. Rachel Rosen, of Great Beginnings Pediatric Dentistry in Twinsburg, said a pediatric dentistry practice is immediately recognizable as soon as one walks through the door. “It is distinctly different (and is) set up to make the child comfortable,” Rosen said. “Everything is smaller – the instruments, the X-rays, the chairs. It is a child’s world.” Rosen said pediatric dentists treat patients from “zero to 18 years old” only, and are highly specialized in the growth and development of children, both physically and emotionally. “A lot of our training is how a child’s psyche develops,” she said. “It is all about your training and your eye; I am only seeing kids, so I see more. I am looking at bone growth and at what age a tooth should be coming in.” She added that apart from specializing in pediatric oral development and growth, tooth trauma is common in the years when children are also learning to walk. Oftentimes when general dentists see patients at this age, “it is not what they deal with” nearly as often as pediatric dentists. Rosen said the years between birth and 3 years old is also a time of tremendous growth and development overall, and a positive first experience with a dentist can make all the difference in a person’s lifelong oral health. She said she wants the experience to be “as powerful as possible” whether it is a fearful toddler or helping “a 15 year-old taking ownership of their oral

Rosen

hygiene.” Berlin added that the decision to seek a pediatric dentist is really not all that different than taking a child to a pediatrician. “We know scientifically a child is not just a miniature adult, and the treatment and management of these cases are very different from an adult,” he said. “We don’t have any issues with general dentists (treating) children, it’s just (important) that they know when to refer them to us. A lot of general dentists do a really great job taking care of kids, and they are really good at saying ‘this is not something I do’.” He said general dentists and pediatric dentists often confer on specifics of a child’s dental care. “They will say, ‘This is what I was planning on doing, what do you think?’ Dentistry is (a) uniquely connected (industry). For example, we refer a lot of patients to orthodontists when it is that time.” Berlin said he feels more parents are seeing the value of visiting a pediatric dentist, and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children have their first dental exam at the time of their first tooth or by their first birthday. Berlin and Rosen said training includes four years of college, followed by up to four years of dental school and another two years of pediatric residency in order to be eligible for board certification. Rosen added that the entire pediatric dentistry staff, including dentists and assistants, are trained specifically to treat children. “My philosophy is that it is a team, and the parents are part of that care team,” she said. “So, it’s not just the doctor saying I am the doctor, do what I say.” Brian Lisik is a freelance journalist.

Choosing a dentist? Questions to ask before your first visit SHANNON MORTLAND

W

hen people look for a new dentist, they often look close to home or seek the advice of friends and family. Such inquiries should start with a few simple questions. In addition to asking trusted loved ones where they get their dental care, ask them what they like about that dentist and why, Dr. Rick Rzepka of Rzepka Rzepka Dental in Beachwood, said. Once you’ve narrowed it down to a few choices, find a dentist that makes you feel comfortable and meets your needs, he added. “You’ve got to feel comfortable,” Rzepka said. “Know that the dentist does this stuff all the time. He is comfortable with exactly what he is doing. It’s critical to feel comfortable with the staff.” There are a host of other questions to ask, said Dr. Shawn Schlessel at The Center for Advanced Dentistry in Beachwood. Among them are:

• Are you taking new patients? • What happens if I have an emergency after hours or on a weekend? Can I actually reach someone? • Will I see the same dentist each visit? “Avoid corporate offices with rotating doctors,” Schlessel cautioned. “You want to build trust and rapport with one provider.” One might also ask about the protocol for treatment plans, Rzepka said, noting that fewer visits is not always the best course of action. He said he often replaces crowns on patients who got them in one visit at another dental practice. The same rules apply when searching for a dentist for children, and it doesn’t necessarily need to a dentist who only works with children. “You don’t have to see a pediatric dentist, but whoever you choose should know their limits in delivering quality care,” Schlessel said. “In our office, we use a Solea laser, which lets us do many fillings for both children and adults without shots, and that’s amazing. But it has its limitations, and children have different needs. I know my limits and when it’s time to re-fer a child to one of the trusted pediatric dentists in the area.” Rzepka said that he sees many children

“Avoid corporate offices with rotating doctors. You want to build trust and rapport with one provider.” Dr. Shawn Schlessel The Center for Advanced Dentistry in Beachwood in his practice. Occasionally, a difficult case will need to be referred to a pediatric dentist. Schlessel said that most people find his practice through word of mouth or by doing a Google search. While it’s important to read reviews, read them carefully. “A practice with thousands of reviews can be a warning sign that they’re being bought or generated,” he sad. “You want a reasonable number of Google reviews that mention specific people in the office by name and describe real experiences, not generic, artificial intelligence-sounding praise.” Rzepka said he cringes when he hears stories about people going to a new dentist who immediately tries to sell them an expensive treatment plan that they must accept immediately.

“I’ve heard that some dentists research the patient’s worth and push treatment plans on them the same day,” he said. “If a dentist pressures you into anything, run. Don’t go there. If they try to sell you expensive extras, don’t do it. A dentist should explain it as many times as needed.” Be wary of a dentist who doesn’t show you your X-rays or photos or explain what they’re seeing, discourages second opinions or makes it hard to get copies of your records, Schlessel added. Walk away if you encounter “vague or surprise pricing, if you are feeling rushed, talked down to or made to feel embarrassed about the state of your teeth,” he said. Israel’s dental professionals answered the call. Now they need support LAURA B. KOLTON Special to the CJN

O

OPINION

n Oct. 7, 2023, Israel’s dental professionals became far more than dentists, educators and students. They became soldiers, first responders, caregivers and forensic specialists.

Among the most deeply affected were dental professionals who served at the Shura military morgue. As members of Israel’s Dental Forensics Identification team, they used dental records and X-rays to help identify Kolton victims when other methods were not possible. The scale of that work was immense. Approximately 15% to 20% of the nearly 1,200 people murdered on Oct. 7 could not be identified through traditional methods alone, requiring advanced forensic imaging and anthropology. At the same time, more than 35% of Israel’s dental students were drafted into military service. Many witnessed unimaginable loss and later returned directly from combat and reserve duty to classrooms, clinics and patient care, carrying the scars of those experiences. In response, Alpha Omega International Dental Society, the only international Jewish dental organization, launched Renewing Minds, Restoring Hope, a trauma-support program for Israel’s dental community. What began as an urgent response has developed into a growing network of care for students, faculty members, residents and dental professionals at Tel Aviv University, Hebrew University-Hadassah and Rambam Health Care Campus. The program has also supported members of the Israel Police Forensic Identification Unit. Through professionally facilitated workshops, peer-support groups and access to individual therapy, participants receive practical tools to manage stress, process trauma and move forward personally and professionally. The program continues to expand. Upcoming sessions include support for the staff of Pele Pediatric Dental Clinic, whose team has continued caring for children – including those with special needs – throughout the war. Several staff members

have also served in the reserves, including one who worked at Shura. An additional workshop is planned for attendees of the Israel Dental Association in December. Nearly three years after Oct. 7, the nature of the need may be changing, but it has not disappeared. Trauma does not necessarily end when military or forensic service ends. Returning to daily life can be part of a much longer recovery. As Dr. Michael Spektor said when the program began, “This program reflects the heart of Alpha Omega – service, healing and humanity.” Those who stepped forward when their country needed them should not have to carry the aftermath alone. If you would like to learn more about the program and how help, please visit aofus.org. Laura B. Kolton is the executive director of Alpha Omega US Dental Foundation in Narbeth, Pa.

Oral, cardiovascular health connection: 4 tips to protect your teeth, gums, heart FEATURE IMPACT

P

eople often think of dentists and doctors as totally separate healthcare professionals: one cares for your teeth and mouth while the other handles the rest of the body. In reality, the different systems in the human body are closely interconnected and oral health is no exception, making dentists a vital part of your healthcare team. Oral health and heart health have a particularly close connection, with inflammation at the core of it. When your gums are inflamed, the resulting bacteria can make their way from your mouth through your bloodstream, potentially contributing to your blood vessels constricting or becoming blocked. This, in turn, may force your heart to work harder and raise your blood pressure, putting you at risk of heart disease and stroke. More than 46% of adults in the U.S. have high blood pressure, and more than 40% of adults age 30 and older are affected by periodontal (gum) disease. To help address these issues, the American Heart Association’s Healthy Smiles, Healthy Hearts initiative, in collaboration with Delta Dental of California, is encouraging dental teams to take a total-body perspective with their patients. Simple steps like blood pressure screenings during checkups can give a more complete picture of a person’s overall health. If a member of your dental care team pulls out a blood pressure cuff at your next appointment, it’s a good sign. “The mouth is a gateway to the body and can often reveal more about your total body health than you may think,” said Dr. Daniel Croley, chief dental officer at Delta Dental of California and Affiliates. “Oral health professionals have a powerful opportunity to integrate more into their patients’ collective health care team beyond protecting their patients’ teeth By connecting oral health and heart health, this initiative helps dentists identify risks early and guide patients toward care that can improve and even save lives.” Care for your teeth, gums and heart all at once using these tips from experts at the American Heart Association. FOLLOW A BRUSHING AND FLOSSING SCHEDULE Good dental health starts with a daily routine. If you don’t want to sheepishly cringe next time the dentist inquires about

yours, brush at least twice a day and floss at least once a day to disrupt plaque-forming bacteria. Dentists recommend using toothpaste with fluoride and brushing your teeth and gums thoroughly yet gently, as applying too much pressure can wear away enamel and cause gum recession. EAT A HEALTHY DIET AND LIMIT SUGAR Most kids are used to hearing sugar will rot their teeth – and that’s not just a parental scare tactic to get their little hands out of the candy jar. Sugar feeds harmful bacteria in your mouth, producing acid that can cause cavities and gum disease. For a diet your heart and teeth will both appreciate, prioritize vegetables, lean proteins, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats, while limiting added sugars and refined carbohydrates. AVOID SMOKING AND TOBACCO PRODUCTS The connection between smoking and oral disease is well established: smokers face significantly higher risks of developing periodontal disease, losing teeth or being diagnosed with oral cancer. Cigarettes aren’t the only form of tobacco to worry about, either. Vaping, dipping and chewing tobacco can also harm your dental health by drying out your mouth and restricting blood flow to the gums. Since these products are also harmful to heart health, quitting or avoiding them offers plenty of worthwhile benefits. Seek support if you need help to kick the habit. COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR HEALTHCARE TEAM Since your body’s systems are connected to each other, it’s helpful to talk to your dentist about your blood pressure and to your doctor about your oral health. Start thinking of your dentist as a key member of your integrated healthcare team. Don’t be afraid to share your medical history, discuss the side effects of any medications you’re taking and ask for personalized recommendations on caring for your teeth, gums and overall health. To learn more about how to improve your oral and cardiovascular health, visit heart.org/OralHealth.
