Founding conductor of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, Carl Topilow’s eclectic programs have been acclaimed by audiences and critics alike. He enjoys a dual career as both conductor and clarinetist, often finding an occasion to perform a selection with the Pops on one of his brightly colored clarinets. Carl is also conductor of the Firelands Symphony Orchestra, based in Sandusky, Ohio. After 42 years as conductor of the National Repertory Orchestra, a summer festival in Breckenridge, CO, he is continuing an active role with the orchestra as Conductor Laureate. He was named Faculty Emeritus after 37 years as Conductor and Director of the Orchestral Program at the Cleveland Institute of Music and has served as principal pops conductor of the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, Southwest Florida Symphony Orchestra and Mansfield Symphony Orchestra.
Topilow has performed as guest conductor with 133 different orchestras in 37 states and 12 foreign countries. He continues his role as educator with his work as clinician and teacher for conductors.
Topilow’s late wife Shirley Morgenstern was the founding President and CEO of the Cleveland Pops Orchestra. Their daughter Emily is the Director of Strategy and Planning with the Cleveland Pops Orchestra, and their daughter Jenny is a violinist with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra.

Next year will be our 25th year of performances, each year bringing the very best in symphonic pops music.
The Cleveland Pops Orchestra is proud to be honoring Brian Gevry, Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board of Boyd Watterson Global Asset Management Group LLC. A big thank you to his daughter, Taylor, who is a member of the Pops Board of Directors, as well as his wife, Kendra, daughter, Lindsey, and son, Alec, who have supported and helped organize tonight’s event.
From somewhat modest beginnings, with a three-concert season at what as the Wolstein Center at Cleveland State University in 1996 to today’s series Severance Hall, Playhouse Square, and multiple venues throughout Greater The Cleveland Pops Orchestra has grown to be recognized as one of the finest the nation. As such, we have become active participants in Cleveland’s amazingly scene, making this one of the best arts cities in the country.
Brian’s love of music and the arts is evident in his service on the National Symphony Orchestra’s Board of Directors. In his executive leadership role within his corporation, he focuses on developing and executing the vision, cultural values, goals, and strategies, allocating resources as needed to meet client needs while achieving each client’s long-term success.

Carl Topilow Music Director & Conductor
Tonight’s musical presentation focuses on some of the great hits of the 1970s, which have served as the soundtrack for those who grew up during that era. Not only do these songs provide fun and entertainment, but they also carry messages that stay with us. We are fortunate to have Connor Bogart O’Brien, a wonderful vocalist and great friend of the Pops, who will be performing tonight. In addition, Brian’s daughter, Lindsey, will be singing a classic Bee Gees song, How Deep Is Your Love.
We are delighted and proud be honoring Richard W. Pogue for his outstanding contributions to our community.
In addition to the professional musicians who comprise our orchestra, Pops is nurturing the next generation of professional musicians through our Petitt Memorial Scholarship Competition for high school students and through collaboration with The Music Settlement that has established The Cleveland Orchestra, now in its second season. We believe that our Youth Orchestra symphonic pops orchestra in North America.
Shirley Morgenstern & Carl Topilow
With the support of our musicians, Board of Directors, donors, and patrons, we continue to strive to remain a vital part of Cleveland’s arts scene for many years to come. There’s nothing like the sound of a symphony orchestra, and ours plays the best of symphonic pops music, Hollywood, Broadway, rock, jazz, and light classics, music that entertains and enriches our lives. Our educational activities, including our in-school Actual Music program, Cleveland Pops Youth Orchestra, and the Gordon and Jean L. Petitt Annual Music Scholarship Competition, are staples of our organization.
Thanks again to everyone who made tonight’s event possible!
The Cleveland Pops Orchestra also operates its Actual MusicTM programs elementary schools, bringing music education to hundreds of children annually. truly say throughout the community that The Cleveland Pops Orchestra has Yet, we could not have done it without the constant support of the Greater Community. Our audience, including subscribers and individual ticket purchasers, blood, but ticket sales provide only a small portion of our $1 million annual independent, non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization, The Cleveland Pops Orchestra on the generosity of individuals, corporations, and foundations. As we look celebrating our 25th birthday beginning next year, we again thank you for helping The Cleveland Pops Orchestra “sound” for this and future generations!
Welcome to our G-Clef Ball, the premier benefit for our beloved Cleveland Pops Orchestra. The Pops will soon begin our 30th year entertaining audiences throughout Northeast Ohio. I’m happy to welcome many of you again to our benefit and to see many new faces.

This year, we are particularly thrilled to honor Brian Gevry, a prominent leader in the business community, not just in Northeast Ohio, but across the nation and around the globe. Brian has been particularly influenced by music and is inspired to look at it as a soundtrack for his life. He has infused and supported that love for music in his daughter, Taylor, as well. Taylor serves as a valued member of the Pops’ Board of Directors.
However, while we celebrate the Pops, we also honor Brian. Brian’s work ethic, philanthropy, and passion for life are reflected in his commitment to our community and the arts.
