I am honored to serve in my second year as your chair of the Upper Arlington Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Trustees. We have a diverse board representing an even more diverse Chamber membership – including retail stores, professional service providers, the hospitality industry, nonprofits and government. And our Chamber would not be complete without the tireless efforts of our volunteer Ambassadors, who provide a direct link between the Chamber and its members. Our board, staff and volunteers are energetic, creative and motivated to find new opportunities for the Chamber, its members and the community as a whole. The UA Chamber is unique because it is not focused solely on business. Our Chamber members and leaders care not only about the UA business climate, but also about the quality of life for all UA-area residents. We want to encourage more people to live, work, shop and invest in UA. That is why the Chamber and its business members value their strong partnerships not only with the business community but also with the City, the Schools and area civic associations. While the Chamber’s divisions and committees pursue many initiatives, the Chamber’s activities are primarily focused on three areas: providing resources to its members, serving the UA community as a whole and advocating for business interests. Your Chamber board will remain committed to all of these areas, with a concentrated focus on improving services to Chamber members. Our goal is simple: If a Chamber member needs help with an issue, his or her first call should be to the Chamber office. Be seen as a trusted resource for the community and aid in work that affects the direction of the Chamber. Committees are an ideal way to network and develop leadership skills. Chamber committees also develop programs to increase member benefits, provide education, attract new members, enhance the local business climate and improve the organization’s financial strength.
Business Advocacy Division
Support the growth and economic well-being of the Upper Arlington-area business community by pursuing job creation and economic investments.

Signature Events Each year, the Upper Arlington Chamber of Commerce holds a variety of events to help foster support for community businesses. Building on Excellence UA residents make waves through hard work and creativity Upper Arlington’s creative and enterprising spirit is evident in the hard-working members of our business community. Through their hard work, some individuals have earned accolades beyond Columbus for their talent.
Jack Nicklaus
Open Championship and the PGA Championship. Notably, Nicklaus, with Desmond Muirhead, created Muirfield Village Golf Club. The club’s golf course would become home to the Memorial Tournament, a PGA event celebrating its 40th year in Dublin. Nicklaus himself participated; in 1984, he became the first participant to win the tournament twice.

Over the span of decades, Upper Arlington native Jack Nicklaus dominated the professional golf scene, winning 18 career major championships. Born in 1940, Nicklaus dabbled in other sports before ultimately finding his true passion. At Upper Arlington High School, he competed in basketball, football, baseball, tennis and track and field. In college, he played football for The Ohio State University. While he was at school

Cameron Mitchell
Another culinary genius, Cameron Mitchell has diversified his talents, opening numerous eateries around Columbus and across the country. His success story also began in Upper Arlington, where he lived and graduated from high school. The graduate of the Culinary Institute of America first gained renown in 1993, when he opened Cameron’s American Bistro in Linworth. Numerous restaurants would follow, including Cap City Fine Diner & Bar, Hudson 29 Kitchen + Drink, M, Marcella’s, Mitchell’s Ocean Club, Martini Modern Italian, Molly Woo’s Asian Bistro, Ocean Prime, The Pearl, The Barn at Rocky Fork Creek and, most recently, The Guild House. In 1999, he was recognized as the Small Business Person of the Year
by the U.S. Small Business Administration. Other awards include Entrepreneur of the Year, the Golden Chain Award, the Silver Plate Award and the Commitment to People Award. Still a resident of Upper Arlington, Mitchell is dedicated to helping the Nationwide Children’s Hospital Foundation and is an active member of the Columbus Partnership. He also serves on the board of directors of KIPP Columbus. Upper Arlington has also enjoyed a long history of sports excellence. In addition to being close to The Ohio State University, the city has been home to several of its football coaches. Past and present UA residents include Woody Hayes, Jim Tressel, Luke Fickell and John Cooper.

Gimme Shelter The four walls of an office can sometimes feel claustrophobic. Fortunately, the outdoors offers a fresh environment for fostering creativity and cooperation. Upper Arlington’s recreational parks can be perfect locations for business meetings, team gatherings and other corporate events. With eight different shelter houses available via Upper Arlington’s Parks and Recreation Department, you’re sure to find a space that satisfies your event requirements. Reduced rates are available for residents and local nonprofit community organizations. Upper Arlington’s historical indoor park facility, the Amelita Mirolo Barn, is also available for rent. Built in 1838 and originally constructed near Reed and Fishinger roads, the barn was preserved and renovated. With the assistance of the Timber Framers Guild, volunteers and Friends of Ohio Barns members, a modern frame was constructed. Perfect for larger events, this uniquely rustic facility now features Wi-Fi, LCD TVs, a kitchen and seating for 150 people. Amenities also include patio areas and a covered stage. If inclement weather necessitates an indoor meeting, a furnished room accommodating 50 people is also available for reservation. 1941. Like many suburbs following World War II, Upper Arlington saw its population increase. At peak population in 1970, Upper Arlington was home to more than 38,000 residents. The U.S. Census’ 2013 population estimate for the city was 34,420.

Upper Arlington’s desire to create a place where its residents can prosper dates back to the city’s beginnings. Struck by Kansas City’s Country Club development, city founders King and Ben Thompson wanted to develop a similar sort of space for Columbus. In 1913, the brothers purchased 840 acres from James T. Miller and began referring to the site James T. Miller, 1918 as the Country Club District. The name wouldn’t stick, however. Because of the area’s proximity to a village named Arlington, now called Marble Cliff, the community became known as Upper Arlington. Rather than use the grid-like street structure known in Columbus, William Pitkin Jr., a landscape architect from New York, wanted to design roads that curved according to the land’s original shape. In 1918, Upper Arlington became a village, and Miller was the first mayor. The 1920s saw development to the village’s business sector along Upper Arlington Avenue. The village was named a city in
