Caring Hometown Holiday Celebrations
H
eading to a big city for the holidays can be exciting – unlimited Christmas shows, shopping and fantastic light displays. Located only nine miles south of downtown Columbus, Grove City residents are close to big city festivities to enjoy the hustle and bustle of the season and then return to experience our hometown holiday celebrations coupled with fun, charitable events. Holiday festivities kick off in traditional hometown fashion Saturday, Dec. 1, with a full day of fun. Take a Christmas tour of historic Century Village at Fryer Park to experience Christmas in the 1800s or head to Mistletoe Market and shop for that one-of-a-kind gift (not found in big city stores) while strolling through historic Town Center. Friends, neighbors and visitors enjoy the seasonal sights and sounds of the City Christmas tree, cheerful holiday decorations and live entertainment. Our young residents and those who are young at heart visit with Santa as his jovial and generous personality brings smiles to all. Visitors witness an ice sculptor at work, get up close and personal with Santa’s reindeer and listen to choirs perform yuletide songs. As the sky darkens, everyone settles in to experience a joyful, lighted parade through Town Center with the fanfare of multiple high school marching bands and participating local business and civic organizations. Before the family Christmas celebrations begin, the goodhearted people of our community come together to make the holidays brighter for those less fortunate. Multiple charitable efforts provide aid and gifts to families and individuals in need. The Grove City Food Pantry extends support all year long by providing food to more than 800 local individuals every month. During the holidays, the pantry benefits significantly from funds raised through the annual Thanksgiving Wattle 5k Walk/Run Nov. 22 and the collection of non-perishable food items by multiple schools, businesses and individuals during the White Christmas Food Drive. The annual Cram the Cruiser toy drive, hosted by the Grove City Division of Police and the City of Grove City, provides Franklin County Children Services with toys and gifts to distribute during the holidays. The Jackson Township Fire Department provides drop-off locations for Franklin County’s Firefighters 4 Kids toy drive. Multiple groups share goodwill through their own charitable events, including local churches and the Grove City Community Club, hosting an annual Holiday Tree Festival and Gala that generates contributions for benevolent services throughout the year. We are a community of caring and supportive neighbors and though the generosity spans January through December, no time of the year reflects our giving spirit more than the holidays. This is when even the smallest of kind acts brings joy. Discovering Our Past Hoover Legacy Lives on In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, before Ohio was established as a state, the land that is now Grove City was part of the 4.2-million-acre Virginia Military District, reserved by Virginia to be used as payment in lieu of cash to its veterans for service during the American Revolutionary War. Many of the area’s early pioneers were veterans who accepted the land as payment, or purchased the land from a veteran who opted not to relocate. This included Revolutionary War veteran, Pvt. John Hoover, who settled on, and farmed much of, 200 acres he purchased in 1807. This land now encompasses Gantz Road and neighboring residential areas. John Hoover was born in 1755 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. In 1776, near the onset of the Thirteen Colonies’ quest for independence from Great Britain, John volunteered for the Pennsylvania militia, which served as part of the Continental Line. He served two three-month active enlistments before heading home,

Council Briefs The Development Process Grove City is growing with many new residential developments. The process to plan and approve a development may take four or more months to complete before construction begins. The first step involves the developer meeting with the City development department. They discuss the residential project including the location, type of housing, size of the project, number of units and more. After the project location is determined, the city administration, engineers and other city professionals meet to discuss. A preliminary development plan is presented. Once a preliminary development plan is submitted in accordance with City code, both the Planning Commission and City Council hold public hearings on the project to see if it is a good fit for www.DiscoverGroveCity.com
our city. If approved by Council, it moves to the next phase. Council may need to act on legislation concerning the project; which may include annexation of the land into Grove City, provisions for city services such as water, sewer, safety and zoning before the final design is presented. The final development plan includes proposed roads, building designs, storm water drainage, sanitary sewers, and landscaping and green space. It is then presented to the Planning Commission, which makes its recommendation to Council. Council conducts a public hearing to consider input regarding the final development plan from Planning Commission, development department, project developers and the public. Questions from council members about aspects of the plan are addressed. Changes may

be made based on public input and suggestions from council members. Finally, if Council approves the project, the developer may move forward to the construction phase. Playing to the Tune of Grove City Director of the Community Winds talks about his careers, the community band and Grove City

H
ave you ever received an unexpected phone call or note that positively changed your life? Longtime Grove City resident and local music man Jim Swearingen has received a handful of thrilling calls – which range from a school in Norway asking him to help its student band, to gaining approval to play a passionate set at the Flight 93 National Memorial in Somerset, Pennsylvania. One call in particular, though, stands out for Swearingen. In 2002, Swearingen was asked to help revitalize the community band in Grove City as the lead director. “I agreed I would direct, but I was only going to give them five years,” Swearingen says with a grin. The five years came and went, and Swearingen realized he loved leading the Grove City Community Winds (GCCW), so he’s still conducting the band after 17 years. And he’s keeping busy, continuing to write music, travel the world and uphold his longtime staff arranger position for The Ohio State University Marching Band – this year, he arranged the half-time show for the Michigan game. Before focusing purely on writing music and conducting, Swearingen was a music teacher, professor and a university department chair. His passion for music extends across many years, but like any passion, inspiration came first.
A History Lesson
Since childhood, Swearingen has loved learning and playing music on multiple instruments. What really inspired him to pursue music in college, and eventually in his professional career, was his middle school band teacher, Mr. Davis. “When you went to his class, kids were literally running to get to the class. They knew they would be greeted with a smile; he was a funny guy and he demanded excellence,” Swearingen says. “He just made us so happy. … And I thought ‘Well, I want to be happy in life, I want to be a band director. I want to try to spread the joy of music and inspire kids in a way where they’d want to be in my class.’” So, Swearingen did just that. He attended Bowling Green State University for music education and later earned his masters from OSU. Throughout his studies, Swearingen learned to write music, gained a basic knowledge of how to play most instruments and met new role models, some of which inspired him to encourage his future students to take courses with stern professors. www.DiscoverGroveCity.com

The Community Band
The phone call about directing the GCCW came at the perfect time since Swearingen was itching to have his own band. Apart from his experienced conducting, Swearingen says the hardworking band members are what make the GCCW sound amazing. “It’s all because of the sacrifice of the members of the band who don’t get paid for what they’re doing, but they’re doing this for a love of music and a love of the community,” he says. The group consists of about 60 members and plays a variety of genres. A genre that holds a special place in Swearingen’s heart is patriotic, as his father was a World War II veteran. So, the group has traveled and played at multiple locations to honor the United States. In 2002, the GCCW was the first ensemble to ever play at the Flight 93 National Memorial where they performed Swearingen’s well-known original song “Flight of Valor.” The group also performed at the National World War II Memorial for WWII veterans. “You become proud of your ensemble when you witness their unselfishness; like when you go shake the vets’ hands and you look behind you and your ensemble is doing the same thing because they feel it’s important, too,” Swearingen says. And with years of playing together, Swearingen says the band is truly a community. “We’re more than just musicians, we’re friends,” Swearingen says. “And yes, we have a common goal of representing Grove City at a high standard and we want (Grove City) to remember us for our ability to Swearingen has lived in Grove City with his family since the early 1970s. play music at a high level, but we also want to remember that we’re all friends. Celebrating Excellence Grove City High School Hall of Fame announces 2018 inductees By Amanda DePerro
I
n January, four new athletes, one administrator and one community member will join the Grove City High School (GCHS) Hall of Fame. Athletes Chuck Davis, Andrea (Line) Larick, Jessica (Saunders) Tollett and Lee Struck; administrator Jim Weber; and graduate Gregg Nibert will all be honored at halftime during a GCHS women’s basketball game Jan. 19 followed by the Hall of Fame dinner. “These folks are under that general theme of people who have ex-
celled and set themselves apart,” says Steve Carr, GCHS Hall of Fame chairman. “It’s excellence, achievement and all of them are winners.” The Hall of Fame began in 2015 and serves to recognize not just former GCHS athletes, but coaches, administrators and supporters of GCHS athletics as well. Community members are invited to nominate those that fit the criteria of quality both in and out of uniform, in both their personal and professional lives, with the input of a 12-person Hall of Fame committee. The committee looks for those val-
ues particularly in the Career/Lifetime Achievement award recipient, which will be awarded to Jim Weber. “With that award, we’re kind of pointing out former athletes who have become real role models. I think most of us on the committee believe that athletics is the other half of education,” says Carr. “People who have won that award before have learned their lessons well on the field of play and have gone on to do some great things in their community and profession.”

Larick, a decorated 1991 GCHS graduate, was a first team All-State softball pitcher and Central District and Ohio Capital Conference (OCC) Player of the Year – twice each. She was also named first team All-Central District and All-OCC three times. She went on to play softball at The Ohio State University.
Jessica (Saunders) Tollett, Athlete
Before graduating in 2007, Tollett was a two-time AllOhio gymnast and qualified for the state gymnastics meet four times. A two-time Central District vault champion, OCC bars and floor exercise cham20 November/December 2018
pion and four-time OCC all-around and vault champion, she led the Greyhounds to two OCC team championships her junior and senior year. She also finished fourth in the state meet her senior year, which was the highest finish in school history.
Lee Struck, Athlete
Struck, a 1992 graduate, excelled in not one but two sports. He was All-State senior year in football and twice All-OCC in both baseball and football. As a varsity football player, Struck enjoyed three undefeated OCC championship seasons, three Courtesy of Lee Struck state playoff appearances and he and his teammates boast a 29-4 record over the course of his varsity career. He went on to play football at the University of Toledo.

years as head track coach. He oversaw the largest expansion of athletic programs and facilities in GCHS history during his time as athletic director, guiding GCHS into the Central Ohio League and Ohio Capital Conference. He was inducted into the OCC Hall of Fame in 2001. During his time as a student at GCHS, Weber was AllMid Six League in football in both 1950 and ’51, and went on to play football at Miami University of Ohio.

Nibert and his wife, Peggy, have an incredible story. So incredible, in fact, it’s been recognized by the NCAA. He graduated in 1975
having played football, basketball and baseball at GCHS. He was head basketball coach at Presbyterian College in South Carolina for 28 seasons and successfully petitioned for Presbyterian to become a Division I school. He is also a cancer survivor. However, that’s not the story picked up by the NCAA; as of 2015, he and Peggy had fostered 37 children over the course of seven years, and Nibert has become a strong advocate for neglected babies and children.
Chuck Davis, Athlete
Part of the GCHS class of 1975, Davis showed his skill on the mat when he became the wrestling state champion during his senior year, completing the journey after becoming state runner-up the previous year. His junior year, he helped lead the team to a thirdplace finish in the state wrestling meet, which was the highest in school history. Central Crossing senior speaks on philanthropy and family By Tessa Flattum

hat did you do this summer? Mallory Lalonde, a Central Crossing High School student, spent her summer on a mission to help others. A mission trip in Africa, that is. The 17-year-old senior first got started doing mission trips after being introduced to the idea at her family’s church, Northwest Bible Church in Hilliard. Lalonde’s family completed a mission trip once before without her and, after hearing their stories, she knew she needed to experience it herself. “My church helps sponsor an orphanage in Malawi called the Passion Center for Children,” she says. “I enjoy really connecting with the youth. It’s hard to put into words how magnificently God is working in Malawi, but it is truly lifechanging to experi-

ence. It’s like home to me now.” The mission trip is a two-week experience where volunteers are able to interact with the local families and children, experience the amazing culture and outreach to several different communities. “While (in Malawi), we spend a
large part of our time at the orphanage getting to know the kids and the staff,” Lalonde says. “We want to make sure the staff knows how much we appreciate all they do for the children and how hard they work.” The Passion Center for Children is a non-profit with a mission to com-

bat poverty and disease. Each year, they create dynamic partnerships with churches and other concerned groups and individuals all over the United States to spread awareness and recruit volunteers. In addition to hands-on work, they also share updated stories about community members in Malawi and even host an annual charity event called the Run with Passion 5K. After Lalonde’s initial trip in 2015, she returned in the summer of 2018 and already has plans to go back for a third time. “One thing most people probably don’t know about me is that I love children and they have always had a special place in my heart,” she says. “I hope to spend my entire summer of 2019 helping teach math to the students at the local primary school.” Just as diligent with her school work and athletics as she is with her philanthropic work, Lalonde maintains a balance of activities throughout the year. When she’s not flying across the globe, she’s either studying or running crosscountry, an interest she’s had since middle school. “I enjoy school because I truly love to learn and I value the friendships I’ve made here,” she says. “My favorite classes would have to be math and chemistry. I love how they are both applicable to the real world and open up opportunities for me in Malawi as well.” After graduation, Lalonde plans to attend college for biomedical engineering and hopes to join the medical field. For now, she’s happy to enjoy her final year of high school with friends. “High school has taught me that, while I have resources around me and people to go to for help, my success or my failure is all dependent upon me and how I act at the end of the day,” she says. “It’s teaching me responsibility.” Both her academic and personal endeavors would not be easy without the support of her family. According to Lalonde, continuous love and encouragement from her

parents, Kathy and John, and siblings has been a crucial part of her success thus far. “My family and I have been through a lot together, and because of that, we are all very close,” she says. “They are always such a comfort and it brings me such peace to have family that truly knows me. I know I can always count on them and my best friend, Brooke, for anything. They’ve truly molded me into the person I am today.” Despite the distance from her family, Lalonde is looking forward to taking mission trips in the future to Africa and wherever else she can. Since her first trip, mission work has been an impactful part of her life and she urges others to get involved as well. “Malawi has taught me to have peace and joy and to love even when I think I can’t,” she says. “I encourage everyone to go all in. The Grant Avenue house was restored by Diane and Frank Haimerl, formerly of Grove City. They purchased the property in 1998 and spent seven months restoring the historic landmark. The original owners were members of the LitzingerLeach-Corzilius family. Diane’s goal was to take the house back to its original appearance with a few upgrades. Part of the restoration involved removing, sanding and refinishing 18 interior solid wood doors. There were many coats of paint that had to be removed to expose the beautiful woodworking and ornate metal hinges. They also restored the working hand crank doorbell at the front entrance. There are at least two other known houses that predate the Civil War. They include the Gantz Homestead, 2255 Home Road, and the Grant-Sawyer Home, 4126 Haughn Road. Both structures, built in the 1840s, are owned by the City of Grove City and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The structure that now houses offices for the Grove City United Methodist Church is another beautiful old home likely built around 1870, according to Steve Jackson, president of the Southwest Franklin County Historical Society. The church property at 2650 Columbus
Street was part of the Leithart Farm as early as 1856. The Leithart heirs sold the property in the mid-1950s to Rush and Opal Thomas who operated a fine dining restaurant and party house. It was later a doctor’s office before being purchased by the church. Another house with historic heritage is one that once belonged to Bill England and his late wife, Jean Marlyn England. Nicholson said the brick house was originally built for William F. Breck and his wife, Elizabeth. It’s not clear exactly when the brick house was constructed but it is believed to have been built around the time a new wood plank toll road was under construction through Grove City. According to research by Nicholson, the two-story Breck home, located at 3359 White Pl., may have been built as early as 1848. According to an old Columbus newspaper, Breck’s front porch had a clear view of the horse-drawn buggies, wagons and coaches that passed daily on Broadway, known then as the Columbus and Harrisburg Turnpike. www.DiscoverGroveCity.com

Children gain independence and confidence while learning to work and play with others in a child-centered classroom setting. Each week’s activities include creative art, sensory exploration, social play and singing at circle time, with a focus on the coming holidays.
RecSchool, operated by Grove City Parks and Recreation, is a childcentered preschool that fosters each child’s feelings of competence, social skills, independence, love of learning and appreciation for the wonders of nature. Curriculum is based on the Ohio Department of Education’s Early Learning Content Standards and capitalizes on how children learn best: through play. Activities offer a balance of spontaneous and planned learning experiences that include art, literacy, music, exploration, early academics, science and daily outdoor experiences. RecSchool is held at Gantz Barn in Gantz Park and operates September through May with part-week, half-day classes offered morning or afternoon. Enrollees must be 3 years old by Sept. 30 of the current school year. Registration for each school year begins the previous February and continues until the program is full. 2019-2020 $172/$132 month

Youth P.A.R.K. (Grades K-4) Programmed After-school Recreation for Kids is committed to providing a safe, secure, enriching and affordable place to be after school. This schoolage childcare program offers daily after-school activities for children in kindergarten through grade four staffed by qualified childcare providers at each site. P.A.R.K. operates in the school gymnasiums every day the South-Western City School District (SWCSD) is in session. The program is designed for, but not limited to, children of working parents. P.A.R.K. provides planned cooperative games, outrageous play, fitness, indoor and outdoor activities, free art, specialinterest and free-choice activities and much more. 55+ Alzheimer’s Support Group (Ages 55+) The everyday challenges faced by those dealing with Alzheimer’s and related diseases can be overwhelming. Caregivers get a sense of belonging by interacting with those facing similar challenges. Under the guidance of Paula Taliaferro. Days: Tue. One bus is equipped with wheelchair lifts, but all participants must be able to board the bus without assistance from the driver. Schedule an appointment at least three days in advance including for Evans Center outings: call 9 a.m. to noon, Monday through Friday. Please be patient! We keep our buses busy. Each 90-minute route visits 12 to 15 elderly or disabled persons. Training is provided. Weekend opportunities are also available. Grove City Parks and Recreation offers six easy methods to register for classes. Registration forms are available for download online or pick up at the Kingston Center.

It is the responsibility of the participant to be present on the date and time listed. A credit is made to the participant’s account if a request is made in writing prior to the start of the program. To receive a full refund for sports, the request must be made before uniforms are ordered. Class/Event Cancellation All classes and events are subject to change or cancellation based on participation and instructor availability. A staff member will notify all registered class participants as changes occur. Photos and Videos The City of Grove City reserves the right to photograph or record event and program participants for publicity purposes. Images may be used in catalogs, brochures, magazines, ads or other print or electronic public relations efforts (i.e., website, social media). Residency Rates & Fair Share Policy The lower “resident rate” provides credit to those paying municipal taxes that help support the programs 18 The Source

This does not include all of ZIP code 43123; ZIP codes are used by the U.S. Postal Service to designate the office that delivers mail to an address. Through the City of Grove City Fair Share Policy, non-residents who pay income tax to the City of Grove City are eligible to participate at resident rates.
