Improving people’s safety IRAHO ST When the City Rail Link opensAKin 2024 more trains will pass Normanby Road more often. Removing the level SYLVAN crossing permanently will improve AVE people’s safety by separating cars, people and trains. It is also expected to improve traffic flow in the area by allowing people to ride, drive and walk across Normanby Road without stopping for a passing train.

The City Rail Link is a game-changer for Auckland as it allows the rail network to at least double in capacity, improving travel options and journey times. From Mt Eden Station, it will take only three minutes to get to Karangahape Station, six minutes to the midtown Aotea Station, and nine minutes to the downtown Britomart Transport Centre.

What to expect
• Elevators cannot be installed on the TSB which means it will not be suitable for people with a walking aid, pram, bike or scooter.
Private vehicles • If you drive over the Normanby Road level crossing, you will need to plan a different route.
• We will clearly signpost an alternative route for people who cannot use the TSB.
• There will be delays in the area, please allow extra time for your journey by car, or consider using public transport, walking or cycling instead.
The new Normanby Road over-rail bridge
• We’re making changes in the area to help maintain traffic flow once the level crossing closes. • New traffic signals will be in place at the Mt Eden Road and Normanby Road intersection. • A new left-turn lane from Boston Road on to Mt Eden Road. • The northbound bus lane will reopen on Mt Eden Road, near the Boston Road intersection, separating buses from general traffic.
People on foot • People on foot will be able to use the level crossing until mid-July 2021.
Once construction of the City Rail Link is complete, three train lines will run underneath Normanby Road. These will carry more trains, more often past Normanby Road. The new bridge will separate cars, people and trains. Two traffic lanes will be provided in each direction, with footpaths on each side of the bridge and screens to prevent objects falling onto the tracks. As well as carrying people and cars, the Normanby Road bridge will carry a range of utilities including power, water, fibre and gas services that will be built into the bridge’s structure. You can see the planned layout of the bridge in the image above.
• In mid-July 2021 the TSB on the western side of the level crossing will open to people on foot and the level crossing will close. • The TSB will have stairs so that people on foot can access both sides of the rail line.
