As part of the City Rail Link (CRL) project, the existing Mt Eden train station will be enlarged and redeveloped to incorporate a modern new station building and an additional platform for the new CRL line. The station will also remain a stop for Western Line services, making it a busy rail junction for passengers travelling to and from the city centre or connecting to other services via Newmarket.
When the CRL opens in 2024, it will provide access to two new city centre stations – Karangahape (under Karangahape Road) and Aotea (under Albert Street) – between Mt Eden and Britomart stations. Britomart will operate as a two-way through station, enabling Auckland’s rail network to double in capacity to carry up to 54,000 passengers an hour at peak times. The CRL will also provide travel time savings for many rail users. From Mt Eden, a train to Karangahape will take just three minutes, while Aotea and Britomart will be a six and nine-minute journey respectively.
Prior to 2024, significant changes need to be made in and around the rail corridor at Mt Eden to integrate the new CRL lines with the existing rail infrastructure and construct new overbridges for vehicles and/or pedestrians and cyclists. This brochure outlines the key rail and road network changes that will be made in Mt Eden for the CRL project, when construction is scheduled to occur and what sort of impacts you might expect from these works. Concept design for overbridge from Ngahura St to Fenton St
Looking ahead to the main works Key activities happening in and around the rail corridor over the next few years include closing the Normanby Rd level crossing and constructing a new road bridge over the rail line; building new pedestrian and cycle bridges over the Western Line from Porters Ave to Wynyard St, Fenton St to Ngahura St and the new station building to the Western Line platform; and constructing trenches, bridges, retaining walls and tunnels for the new CRL rail lines, both within the rail corridor and on CRLowned land we’ve cleared for construction
purposes. There will also be widespread changes to rail infrastructure, including signals, overhead electrical lines, tracks and an extended Western Line platform that caters for nine-car trains. The information below divides the Mt Eden rail corridor works (extending from the Dominion Rd flyover to the SH1 flyover by Mt Eden Prison) into three geographic areas. Activities will overlap as different work starts and finishes. Dates are indicative but will be confirmed as planning is finalised.
Eastern-Facing Connection (east of Mt Eden Rd towards Normanby Rd)
Early works along the rail corridor at Mt Eden In the first half of 2020, we’ll start early works in a number of locations along the Mt Eden rail corridor to prepare for the main CRL construction works. These include: • Diverting utility services away from the rail line along Fenton St and Normanby Rd.
• On 30 May, the Mt Eden Station will close for about four years while the new station building and CRL tunnels and tracks are constructed. Trains will run on one line (referred to as ‘single line running’) through Mt Eden to keep freight and passenger services operating on the network while our team works on the other side of the
corridor, but trains will not stop at the station. Visit www.cityraillink.co.nz/mteden-train-station-closure-crl for more on the station closure. The Normanby Rd level crossing will temporarily close over Easter weekend while bridge foundation and utility works are undertaken in that area. Pedestrians will still be able to cross on the eastern side.

If we need to do work outside these hours, we will notify this in advance.

• Erect construction hoardings to secure work sites and help minimise noise and dust for neighbouring properties • Introduce measures to control soil movement, including washing the wheels of trucks before they leave site • Use water to suppress dust • Install monitoring equipment to measure air quality, ground water levels and ground and building movement • Erect thick mats and enclosures around plant and equipment to minimise construction-related noise • Maintain access to public and private property • Manage contractor parking to minimise the use of on-street parking spaces wherever possible • Attended noise and vibration monitoring when work is anticipated to be particularly disruptive. This ensures we comply with the levels specified in our consent condition • Directing trucks to use main arterial routes as much as possible
Western-Facing Connection (from Fenton St towards Porters Ave)
Two significant closures will also occur in the station area during this period to enable utility diversion and construction work to be carried out: • On 10 April (Easter weekend), the Porters Ave level crossing will permanently close to vehicles. Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to cross the tracks in this area until the new Porters Ave pedestrian/ cycle overbridge opens in 2021.
