Busy year ahead for City Rail Link After a great year for the City Rail Link (CRL) project in 2017, when the Albert Street trench was excavated and the first sections of tunnel were constructed, we’re now full steam ahead for a very busy 2018! You can keep up to date on project progress through this newsletter, on our website cityraillink.co.nz and on social media - but here’s a quick guide to some upcoming milestones: Britomart: Excavation of the CRL rail tunnels within the Chief Post Office (CPO) and Lower Queen Street is expected to start in the middle of this year and construction of the rail tunnel structures in the last quarter of 2018. Albert Street: In the second half of the year, the Albert Street trench excavation will be completed and connected to the Precinct Properties site on the corner of Customs and Lower Albert Streets. The tunnel box construction will continue all year, following behind the excavation. By mid-year, the Albert Street trench will start to be backfilled between Wyndham and Swanson Streets

Mt Eden: Stormwater diversion works will begin at the Mt Eden end of the project in February and continue throughout the year. Other contracts: A number of contracts will go out for tender this year, most notably the main contract, where two short-listed companies will compete to provide the design and construction services for the CRL tunnels and stations. Mt Eden stormwater realignment works to begin By the end of February, contractors March Bessac NZ JV will start diverting a section of the existing Mt Eden stormwater pipe and creating a new alignment between Water and Nikau Streets. A realignment is needed because the existing pipe will otherwise clash with the CRL tunnels that will be built at Mt Eden. All surface work will occur on property already owned by CRL, with minimal effect on traffic. Two buildings on Mt Eden Road and Ruru Street will be demolished as part of this work. Shafts at Water and Nikau Streets will be constructed to provide underground access for the micro tunnel-boring machine (pictured) that will simultaneously excavate and install the new stormwater pipe using a pipe jacking technique. The stormwater realignment works are expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2019.
Britomart D-walls near completion Contractors Downer Soletanche Bachy have almost completed the 64 diaphragm walls (or D-walls) required to support the CRL tunnel excavation under Britomart Station. The D-walls not only provide soil retention and control groundwater ingress but support the weight of the historic Chief Post Office building during tunnel construction. The D-walls are being excavated to between 16 and 20 metres deep and filled with concrete and run either side of where the new train tunnels will be constructed. The D-wall plant (red silos) in Lower Queen Street is expected to be removed in late March.

Secant piling begins in March In March, work is expected to begin on the installation of 70 secant pile walls across Lower Queen Street. Made of reinforced concrete, secant piles lock together for strength and to control any ground-water ingress into the tunnel excavation. The secant pile walls will connect the excavation under Britomart Station to the excavation at Precinct Properties’ Commercial Bay development, where CRL tunnel boxes are being constructed. More schools wanted for station arts initiative

More than 100 Auckland primary schools have already registered to take part in an exciting arts initiative, which enables them to be part of New Zealand’s biggest infrastructure project and leave a lasting artistic legacy in one of the stunning new CRL train stations. Year 6 students in 2018 will have the chance to create unique artworks that will be prominently displayed in the country’s busiest rail station,
located under Albert Street, once it opens to the public in 2023/24. The project has chosen to work with Year 6 students, who will be leaving school and heading out to work or study when the CRL opens. All Auckland primary schools have been invited to participate, so please check with your local school that it’s signed up to take part. Registrations close at the end of February.
Canopy removal works to start in March The canopies of four Albert Street buildings will be removed between March and September this year to allow space for the piling rig that will install the ground support system for CRL’s future Aotea Station. The affected buildings include AA, Manhattan, SkyCity and Auckland Council, located on the western side of Albert Street between Victoria and Wellesley Streets. Access to businesses will be maintained and they will remain open as usual. CRL is also taking the opportunity to relocate all the utility services from the same area, as they are within the footprint of the new station. The utility works are likely to start by August and run through to about April 2019. Undertaking these enabling works early will reduce the 4
overall impact of CRL project works on businesses along this stretch of Albert Street. They will reduce the length of the main construction programme and ensure property owners get some relief between the enabling works and the start of the station works.

First CRL tunnels progressing Here’s how the CRL tunnels on Precinct Properties’ Commercial Bay site are looking this week. By mid 2018, 100 metres of CRL rail tunnel will be built through this development site between Lower Queen and Albert Streets. It will join the tunnels coming down Albert Street and those coming from Britomart Station.
