Full 18-metre depth reached in Albert Street trench This week, City Rail Link’s Albert Street trench reached its full 18-metre depth near Wyndham St. CRL contractor Connectus is now removing the 100-year-old stormwater pipe at the base of the trench before it can start building the CRL tunnel box at the southern end of the trench. The redundant stormwater pipe will be unearthed at shallower depths as the excavation moves north. At the Customs Street intersection, the pipe is at a depth of only eight metres. The old pipe and a pumping chamber must be removed, as they are in the way of the future CRL rail tunnels. The current depth of the remainder of the trench varies between 3.5 to six metres but will continue to be excavated from south to north.

This waka train represents the connection of traditional knowledge with today’s technology, the sharing of stories that have influenced design and the journey that has resulted.

It’s also the image for the CRL’s draft social outcomes strategy, which aims to improve the social wellbeing of Auckland’s people as well as it’s transport options.
“For me the image represents the past, present and future. Where Britomart stands now used to be water and the image depicts the change from a traditional waka to a modern equivalent a train,” says Berenize.

The roof is on! The first complete section of CRL tunnel was finished this week on the Commercial Bay development site between Lower Queen and Albert Streets. This is the first quarter of a total 100 metres of rail tunnel that will be built through Commercial Bay by April next year. Columns being prepared ahead of CPO load transfer CRL contractor Downer Soletanche-Bachy Joint Venture continues works to protect Britomart’s Chief Post Office (CPO) building ahead of future CRL tunnelling. The columns within the CPO are being prepared for ‘underpinning’ works, which will enable the load of the historic building to be transferred off its current foundations and onto large steel beams attached to the diaphragm support walls being constructed under the building. This will enable the CRL tunnels to be built without impacting the 105-year-old building above.
Albert Street traffic decks nearing completion By the end of the year, the Albert Street construction decks will be completed, allowing a continuous traffic lane to be provided on both sides of the road along the full length of Albert Street. This will remove the current need to divert northbound traffic along Wolfe Street and enable the street to return to its original one-way configuration into Albert Street. Albert Street will then be in a ‘steady state’ for traffic flow and remain unchanged for a year. The set-up of Albert Street will increasingly look like this: Mills Lane

Wellesley Street reinstated Construction equipment has now been cleared from Wellesley Street at the Albert Street intersection. The Wellesley Street shaft for the new stormwater line under Albert Street has been capped and the road reinstated. All the stormwater that used to flow through the old pipe down the middle of Albert Street has been diverted into the new line that runs further to the east between Wellesley and Swanson Streets. The right-hand turn from Wellesley to Albert Street will be restored in the New Year.

Victoria Street traffic switch planned for early December During the weekend of 2-3 December, traffic on Victoria Street will be temporarily diverted to the northern side of the road. This will allow us to reinstate the footpath on the southern side of the road, which was halved during construction work in Victoria Street. Victoria Street should be fully reinstated in early January 2018.

Section of Albert St to be rebuilt in early December Over the weekend of 2-3 December, Albert Street between Quay West and the Stamford Hotel will be resurfaced to align all the traffic levels. This means Customs Street traffic turning left onto Albert Street will need to be temporarily diverted onto the construction deck for a short stretch before moving back onto the roadway. Traffic controllers will be on site to manage traffic flow. Mills Lane will be closed on Saturday and re-opened that evening but traffic will still have full access through Swanson Street east.

Platform edge re-build underway at Britomart Station The area at the end of platform five at Britomart Station has been excavated and prepared for the future CRL rail track extension through to Aotea Station. The platform edge is now being reconstructed and the railway track bed temporarily covered so the space can be re-opened to the public early next year. This early excavation work will make it easier for contractors to lay new rail track once the CRL tunnels have been fully constructed from Britomart to Mt Eden.
Automatic gates for Wyndham crossing Automatic gates have been installed at the Wyndham Street pedestrian crossing to protect pedestrians from trucks and construction machinery driving up and down Albert Street.
Wednesdays on Wellesley To celebrate the removal of the Wellesley Street pipejack hoardings and the reinstatement of the road, CRL has partnered with Activate Auckland to provide a programme of live entertainment on Wednesdays from 5-7pm. ‘Wednesdays on Wellesley’ features roving street performances that reflect the range of cuisines offered by local restaurants that had previously been adjacent to construction hoardings. There’s something for everyone, from Mexican and American to Indian and Korean. Wednesdays on Wellesley will run until 20 December.
