The City Rail Link includes turning Britomart Station from a terminus to a through station. Those who will be doing this in a sensitive heritage building are the Soletanche Bachy and Downer Joint Venture. They bring broad experience to the extremely complex engineering requirements of the project. Sited in the former Chief Post Office (CPO), the station is internationally recognised for its innovative but also heritage-sympathetic architecture. The same attention to heritage will be vital to the next stage of its life. Soletanche Bachy, a multinational company renowned for foundation projects in sensitive heritage sites, has worked on underground metros in most of the world’s major cities. It has restored historical monuments such as the Arc de Triomphe and Grand Palais in Paris and the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. It also redeveloped St Pancras Railway Station in London, known as “the cathedral of railways,” as a Eurostar Terminus for the Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL).

Downer converted the Chief Post Office into Britomart Station in two stages to create a two-level basement concourse (2003) Downer, a leading provider of infrastructure and communication services, has been part of the New Zealand community for over a century. Downer designs, builds, maintains and operates key infrastructure around the country including the Homer Tunnel providing access to Milford Sound, Pukeahu National War Memorial Park and Arras Tunnel in Wellington as well as maintaining significant roading, telecommunications and water assets around the country. In Auckland, Downer built the Chief Post Office, Britomart Station,
Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU) Rail Depot and has recently completed upgrades to the waterfront at Devonport and Westhaven. The joint venture will start constructing temporary accommodation for Britomart Station’s ticketing and customer service operations in July. This will be followed by underpinning the CPO building to allow the construction of the rail tunnels beneath, reinstating Britomart Station and upgrading the surrounding urban space and roads.

CRL story goes up on Victoria Street West After months of preparation work for the pipe jack shafts, the hoarding enclosing the first shaft on Victoria Street West (Mai Thai corner) will be completed in early April. Our first large-scale opportunity to tell the CRL story, the colourful hoardings will show the latest designs for the new stations and the role the CRL will play in creating an integrated public transport system for the entire city. The next pipe jack hoardings will be on Victoria Street West (Surf and Snow corner) followed by those on Wellesley Street West.

What we are doing about traffic flows The CRL is just one of a number of CBD construction projects whose complexity requires an extra focus on traffic flows. Auckland Transport Operations Centre (ATOC) has established a 7am to 7pm control team to maintain optimum traffic flows. AT will also provide extra buses daily, if needed, wherever possible. To keep the city moving while the CRL is constructed, AT has also: • Created 53,179 more bus, rail and ferry weekday average seats • Installed 24/7 bus lanes on Victoria West, Albert, Wellesley West Streets and Mayoral Drive, with more to come on Queen, Customs and Hobson Streets • Launched the Build is ON campaign encouraging CBD peak hour commuters to shift from vehicles to public transport, carpooling, walking or cycling.

Auckland’s latest activation space Lower Queen Street becomes the city’s newest activation space next month after buses are relocated on 17th April. It will be transformed into a flexible, multi-use space for large to small events while providing pedestrian movement through the area. Auckland is a city in transition, with the CRL vital to that change so expect to see activities that celebrate its transformation.
