Over the next 30 years, a million more people will call Auckland home. City Rail Link (CRL) is the largest transport infrastructure project ever to be undertaken in New Zealand and will deliver a much better rail system for our growing international city. The 3.45 kilometre twin-tunnel underground rail link will unlock our public transport network and transform the way we travel around our city. When CRL opens, Aucklanders will have new world-class stations and a modern rail service that will benefit the entire transport network for decades to come. Britomart Station will no longer be a dead-end stop. Instead it will become a two-way through station – doubling the capacity of the entire rail network to carry up to 54,000 passengers an hour at peak times.
New stations are being built below Albert Street and Karangahape Road. CRL will also connect with the Western Line at a redeveloped Mt Eden Station – less than 10 minutes from downtown Auckland – opening up the entire rail network. The international award-winning station designs have been developed together with Mana Whenua. Once built they will be uniquely Auckland.

AOTEA STATION Auckland’s busiest station
This 15-metre-deep, 300-metre-long, underground station is expected to become the busiest in New Zealand. At its Wellesley Street entrance, hundreds of rods representing the stems of harakeke (flax) will be suspended from the ceiling to create a rippled lighting effect that mimics water. Skylights representing the seven stars of the Matariki constellation - which marks the start of the Māori new year will light the underground concourse and platforms.

Te Komititanga - a new civic space Lower Queen Street has been transformed into Te Komititanga - a new people-friendly square that connects Auckland’s city centre to the Waitematā Harbour and Britomart Station. Designed in partnership with Mana Whenua, the new square features native trees and over 137,000 basalt pavers. At the northern end, the pavement design depicts the waves of the Waitematā coming to shore, while the southern end reflects the meandering Wai Horotiu Stream that once ran down Queen Street. In the centre of the square is a whāriki – a welcome mat. The whāriki represents a meeting point; of two waters, of past and present and of people.
