ANDREW’S ANNOUNCEMENTS A MESSAGE FROM THE CITY MANAGER

Hello Vallejo

Vallejo recently welcomed home one of its most celebrated sons, CC Sabathia. The City honored the Major League Baseball legend for his Hall of Fameworthy career and his continued philanthropic work through the PitCCh In Foundation. In a heartfelt ceremony, Gateway Drive was ceremonially renamed in his honor, and he was presented with a Key to the City. The event brought together the Vallejo Unified School District, the City of Vallejo, the PitCCh In Foundation, and Kaiser Permanente, along with CC’s family and many of the mentors and supporters who helped shape his early years. It was a powerful reminder of the impact one individual can have on a community. Be sure to check out photos from the celebration in this issue of the Vallejo Weekly.

In other news, a recent San Francisco Chronicle article named Vallejo as having some of the worst roads in the Bay Area. While we acknowledge the challenges, the article overlooked the significant investment Vallejo residents made through the passage of Measure P in 2022. Since then, City staff have been diligently working to implement a comprehensive road repair strategy. From securing funding and developing project plans to issuing RFPs and launching construction, the groundwork is well underway. A Cape Seal project is currently in progress and expected to be completed by spring. Another major road repair project will go before the City Council next month, with construction slated to begin after the rainy season. These are just the first of many annual projects aimed at improving our streets and ensuring a smoother ride for all.

As we approach Thanksgiving, it’s also a time to reflect on the importance of giving back. Assemblywoman Lori Wilson will host her second annual Operation Gobble Gobble this Saturday at the Solano County Fairgrounds, providing meals to those in need. GVRD will also host a similar event on November 20th and 21st at the Vallejo Community Center. These efforts highlight the compassion and generosity that define our community, especially during the holiday season.

Finally, the City Council has approved the hiring of a consultant to help Vallejo pursue federal funding aimed at revitalizing America’s marine infrastructure. This initiative focuses on leveraging the former Navy assets on Mare Island to attract high-paying jobs and stimulate economic growth in Vallejo and the surrounding region.

Cave Language Academy Cleans Up The Cave Language Academy PTA continues to inspire with its commitment to community and student engagement. On Wednesday, November 12th, the PTA hosted its 2nd Annual Community Clean-Up Day, bringing together students, staff, and families to beautify the school grounds and surrounding neighborhood. This effort was part of the school’s preparation for the Ruby Bridges Walk to School Day, held on Friday, November 14th, a meaningful event that honors the legacy of civil rights icon Ruby Bridges. Students from Transitional Kindergarten through 8th grade rolled up their sleeves and took pride in giving back to their community, demonstrating the values of service and unity. In addition to the clean-up, the PTA organized a food drive to support the Solano Food Bank, rallying the school community to collect over 900 food items for families in need. The generosity and enthusiasm shown by students and families alike made a powerful impact and highlighted the spirit of giving that defines Cave Language Academy. These events not only foster school pride but also teach students the importance of civic responsibility and compassion. Way to go, Cave Language Academy!

Vallejo Honors Hometown Hero CC Sabathia with Key to the City and Street Renaming Vallejo rolled out the red carpet on November 16th to welcome home one of its most celebrated sons, Hall of Fame pitcher and Vallejo High School alumnus Charles Carsten “CC” Sabathia. In a heartfelt ceremony at Corbus Field (where CC also played High School football), the city honored Sabathia with the Key to the City, an honorary street renaming, and a series of accolades recognizing his extraordinary achievements both on and off the baseball field. Sabathia, who was inducted into the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame in July, enjoyed a legendary career that spanned nearly two decades. His impressive stats include: •

Beyond the diamond, Sabathia has remained deeply committed to giving back. His PitCCh-In Foundation, in partnership with the City of Vallejo, Vallejo City Unified School District, and Kaiser Permanente, helped organize the day’s events. The celebration began with a youth baseball camp, where Sabathia spent time mentoring local kids, sharing his love for the game, and encouraging the next generation of athletes.

Vallejo Fire Department and IAFF Local 1186 Honored with 2025 “Partnership for Success” Award

The Vallejo Fire Department and the Solano Napa County Professional Firefighters, IAFF Local 1186, have been jointly awarded the 2025 “Partnership for Success” award—an annual honor presented by the California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (Cal-JAC) to recognize departments that exemplify strong labor-management collaboration. Both organizations expressed pride and gratitude at being selected for this distinction, which highlights their shared commitment to highquality training and professional development. The award underscores the powerful and productive partnership between Vallejo Fire Department leadership and Local 1186. At the core of this collaboration is a unified belief that excellent fire, rescue, and emergency medical services begin with a strong, well-trained workforce. Both agencies have prioritized building a training program that not only supports firefighter safety and professional growth but also enhances the level of service provided to the community. “Our partnership is built on mutual respect and a shared vision,” said Aaron Klauber, President of Solano Napa County Professional Firefighters, IAFF Local 1186. “We each have a seat at the table to build out our training vision. 14

We work through challenges together because we all want the same thing—a highly skilled, well-prepared firefighting force that delivers the best possible service to the people who rely on us. This award reflects the collective effort of our membership and department leadership to invest in the future of the fire service.” Interim Vallejo Fire Chief Arthur Gonzales emphasized the importance of collaboration between labor and management in creating meaningful training opportunities. “The training environment we’ve built is the result of open communication and a true partnership with Local 1186,” Chief Gonzales said. “Our firefighters deserve the best tools, the best instruction, and the best support we can provide. When labor and management work together toward common goals, our entire community benefits. This recognition from CalJAC is a testament to what can be accomplished when we unite around a shared mission.” In recent years, the Vallejo Fire Department and Local 1186 have invested heavily in improving and modernizing training procedures, enhancing firefighter safety programs, supporting apprenticeship pathways, and strengthening professional development standards. Through joint planning and

coordinated instruction, the two organizations continue to raise the bar for operational readiness and service delivery. Both Chief Gonzales and President Klauber noted that while the award is an honor, the real measure of success is the improved outcomes for the community. Their collaborative approach ensures that residents receive emergency services delivered by highly trained professionals equipped with the knowledge and skills necessary to respond effectively to fires, rescues, and medical emergencies. The Vallejo Fire Department and Solano Napa County Professional Firefighters, IAFF Local 1186, expressed sincere appreciation to CalJAC for the recognition. They also extended gratitude to the men and women of the fire service who make the partnership strong through their dedication, professionalism, and commitment to continuous improvement. “Receiving this award is not the end point,” Chief Gonzales added. “It’s motivation to keep building, keep training, and keep striving toward excellence—together.” President Klauber agreed. “Our firefighters take great pride in serving this community, and awards like this remind us that we’re on the right path. City of Vallejo’s Settlement Agreement Evaluator recently released a Year-1 Status Report. The report covered the period from April 8, 2024, to June 30, 2025, and provides a comprehensive assessment of progress, accomplishments, and areas requiring additional focus as Year1 reform works comes to a conclusion. The Evaluator’s Status Report can be accessed at www.Vallejomonitor.com. Chief Jason Ta reaffirmed the department’s commitment: “The Vallejo Police Department continues to recognize the importance of this reform work. We are dedicated to meeting the requirements of the Settlement Agreement and enhancing accountability and trust within our community. While challenges remain, this first year reflects progress and our commitment to seeing the reforms through to completion.”

Community Comes Together to Clean Up Bay Vine Trail On Sunday, November 16, Vallejo residents rolled up their sleeves to help beautify the Bay Vine Trail. Organized by the local group “Rooted Vallejo,” the clean-up focused on a 0.4-mile stretch between the concrete path and the fence line. Volunteers collected debris with support from the City of Vallejo, which provided its tool trailer to assist the effort. The event was part of the City’s ongoing partnership with the community to keep Vallejo clean and vibrant. CalTrans Traffic Alerts

Caltrans has started construction on the Rehabilitation and Complete Street Project on State Route 29 (Sonoma Boulevard). This work began on Thursday, Oct 16, from the Napa/Solano County line at Mini Drive and span the 6 miles to Cal Poly Maritime Academy. From Oct. 13 to Nov. 21, work is scheduled from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. each night. During this time initial work will begin between Napa/Solano County line at Mini Drive to Missouri Street. All work depends on the weather. The project is estimated to be completed in the Fall of 2026. This project will consist of the deconstruction of the current medians and curbs. The construction activities may be noisy and create dust at times, as work will be done by jackhammering and other construction equipment. This project will require a lane closure with one lane open for motorists and traffic control in place. Daytime access is expected to be available for motorists. While construction is occurring, there will be a CHP presence in place. More updates will be provided and the project continues. The City of Vallejo is offering a Free Neighborhood Dumpster to help residents with exterior clean-up projects. This program is available once a year per block and gives neighbors a chance to work together to clean up their street. To qualify, five residents from the same block must sign up, and all participants must have current garbage service. Main applicant must own and occupy residence. The dumpsters are for outdoor use only and are issued on a first-come, firstserved basis.

Pacific Gas and Electric Company Former Vallejo MGP Boat Launch Parking Lot Restoration Project Weekly Report 11/14/25

PG&E provides this update on restoration work occurring in the boat launch parking lot that is part of a larger 26-acre City of Vallejo-owned property at the corner of Curtola Parkway and Sonoma Boulevard (site). This is the final phase of the restoration work associated with PG&E’s former Vallejo Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) environmental cleanup project. In December 2023, PG&E completed cleanup work under the oversight of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) to address impacts from a gas plant that operated at the site from 1872 to 1930. To allow for restoration work to occur safely, Mono Street and the boat launch parking lot will be closed to public traffic until after restoration activities are complete in late December 2025 or January 2026. Upon completion of restoration activities, PG&E will return control of the site to the City of Vallejo. Safety signage will be in place to direct construction-related traffic.
