ANDREW'S ANNOUNCEMENTS Hello Vallejo! As our community celebrates the Grads and Dads this weekend, I want to thank everyone who turned out for all the exciting activities this past week, including Pista Sa Nayon and Vallejo Field Day hosted by LaRussell. You’ll find many fun pictures of families enjoying these events in this Vallejo Weekly. Next week, City Hall will be closed on Thursday, to observe the Juneteenth holiday. On Friday June 20th, I encourage you to take part in Assembly District (AD) 11 Day with Assemblywoman Lori Wilson at Vallejo City Hall. Please check out the flyer in this edition of the Weekly and stop by to meet the Assemblywoman and her staff to see what State services are available to you! Also, next week, there will be a special Council meeting on the potential agreement with the Solano County
Sheriff’s Department to assist the Vallejo Police Department and improve public safety. As you may know, the City Council has been deliberating regarding the FY 202526 Budget. Last Tuesday, Council listened to public comment on the proposed budget and expressed the desire to reduce expenditures to create a more structurally balanced budget. Their discussions included freezing vacant nonessential staff positions. Staff will return with additional areas to help reduce the budget shortfall at the City Council meeting on June 24th. wo weeks ago, during a routine field inspection in the Glenn Cove area, James found himself in an unexpected, high-stakes situation. Around 10 a.m., as he was heading back to the office, he noticed a vehicle ahead moving unusually slow. Curious, he inched closer, only to realize the car was shadowing a little boy—shoeless and sprinting down the road. Alarmed, James pulled alongside the other driver to assess what was happening. They were just as perplexed, but equally concerned. Then came the gut-wrenching realization— the child was heading straight for the bustling intersection of New Bedford Drive and Glenn Cove Parkway. Without hesitation, James surged ahead in his Vallejo Code Enforcement vehicle, flicking on his extra emergency lights to halt the flow of traffic. The boy dashed past him safely, but he didn’t stop—his little legs carried him further down Glenn Cove Parkway. Time was ticking, and danger loomed. Teaming up with the other driver, James once again maneuvered ahead, determined to intercept the child. Together, they managed to corral him, gently bringing him to a stop in the middle of the street. The child, seemingly unaware of the chaos around him, remained oblivious to the risks he had just escaped. Other drivers soon joined the effort, helping to ensure the boy stayed put while James swiftly radioed the Vallejo Police Department. Within moments, VPD officers arrived, taking over the situation and safely reuniting the child with his caregivers. James’ quick thinking, calm presence, and unwavering dedication prevented what could have been a heartbreaking tragedy. His vigilance not only ensured the child’s safety but also reminded us all of the immense value of community awareness and 11 action. Bravo, James! Your efforts make Vallejo a better, safer place for everyone.
Know a local centenarian? Supervisors want to honor them The Solano County Board of Supervisors needs the community’s help in identifying centenarians living in our community for recognition at a Board of Supervisors meeting later this fall as part of the 19th annual centenarian commemoration celebration. For the past 18 years, the Solano County Board of Supervisors has celebrated the lives of local centenarians by hosting a special recognition ceremony during a Board meeting. This annual commemoration not only honors some of the county’s oldest residents but also highlights their life stories and draws attention to the unique challenges facing the senior community. The life stories of our centenarians are documented in a hard cover yearbook as well as a video that features interviews with those that can participate. We present the video to the public at a Board of Supervisors meeting each year and a copy of the book is given to each centenarian and/or their family as a lasting tribute to their life and contributions to the community. This program, while rewarding for the Board of Supervisors, is really an important part of preserving our County’s rich history. These stories become part of the permanent record, not just for future generations of the centenarians’ families to hold, but for all of us. To date the Board has honored more than 275 centenarians in Solano County. Two centenarians reached super-centenarian status, including Marie West in 2011 and Reta Wills in 2021. Super-centenarians are those individuals who have reached 110 years or older, which only occurs at a rate of about 1 in 7 million people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau 2024 population estimates, approximately 101,000 Americans are aged 100 or older at any given time in the United States, with California having the most at nearly 9,000 residents. Centenarians, according to the Pew Research Center, are predominately women (78 percent), have a family history of long-lived parents, enjoy regular physical activity, have a balanced diet, and maintain close relationships with family and friends.

Vallejo Fire Department Recruit Academy Class 2025-1 Completes Wildland Fire Training There was no live fire, but the heat was real. Under the early summer sun and surrounded by dry brush and steep terrain, the Vallejo Fire Department’s Recruit Academy Class 2025-1 recently completed their wildland firefighting training in the hills just north of Vallejo. This training marks a milestone for the academy class as they prepare for graduation and active duty.

The physically demanding drills gave recruits a firsthand look at what it takes to control fastmoving vegetation fires in difficult terrain. Their training comes at a critical time. Vallejo and Solano County have already experienced several multi-acre vegetation fires this year, highlighting the urgency of preparing new firefighters to respond with skill and confidence.

Class 2025-1 is set to graduate from the recruit academy on July 1. The Vallejo Fire Department looks forward to officially welcoming the eight Vallejo recruits online, as they begin their careers in service to the Vallejo community this July.

Resource Connect Solano Partners with United Way Bay Area to Expand 2-1-1 Access
As of March 3, Resource Connect Solano (RCS) is proud to announce its official partnership with United Way Bay Area, expanding access to Coordinated Entry System services. Now, individuals in Solano County experiencing or at risk of homelessness can simply call or text 2-1-1 to connect with vital resources. RCS streamlines access to housing and supportive services, helping individuals navigate both immediate and long-term housing needs. Through the Coordinated Entry System, RCS identifies and facilitates the most appropriate response to each person’s unique situation. Thanks to this new partnership, callers to 2-1-1 will be able to complete an intake and assessment in real-time with a United Way Bay Area Call Center Specialist available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. This around-the-clock access marks a significant step forward in ensuring that those in need can connect to services whenever they need them day or night.

This confidential service is available to the public in English, Spanish, and 140 other languages.
