City of Sebastian Seeking City Clerk
The City of Sebastian is currently seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented professional to serve as its next City Clerk. This full-time leadership role is essential to keeping the City running smoothly, supporting transparency, and ensuring compliance with state and local laws.
Under the direction of the Mayor and City Council, the City Clerk serves as the official records custodian for the City, maintaining important documents such as ordinances, resolutions, and contracts. The position is responsible for preparing City Council agendas, recording meeting minutes, and ensuring all public meetings and notices comply with Florida’s Sunshine and Public Records laws.
In addition to records management, the City Clerk plays a key role in coordinating municipal elections, responding to public records requests, and supporting communication between City leadership, staff, and the community. The role also includes overseeing legal notices, managing the City Clerk’s office operations, and maintaining the official Code of Ordinances.
The ideal candidate will have strong organizational, communication, and customer service skills, along with knowledge of Florida laws related to ethics, public records, and government operations. Candidates should have a combination of education and experience in a related field and either hold or be able to obtain professional certifications such as Certified Municipal Clerk.

Sebastian Art Club Joins the Mural Trail
A new mural was unveiled in March at the Sebastian River Art Club, painted by talented artists Suze` Lavender and Sheila Lougheed. We’re grateful for the collaboration between the Sebastian River Art Club and the Chamber of Commerce on this project.

ROADS UPDATES
Phase 4 road work, including milling, resurfacing, and full roadway reconstruction, has commenced in the following areas: Periwinkle Dr, Joy Haven Dr, Bevan Dr, Coply Ter, Birtle Ct, Arcadia Dr, Camilo Ct, Penlynn St, Picasso St, Ocean Cove St, and Veterans Memorial Way. Work is expected to be completed by the first week of April.
Crews continue to address potholes throughout the City.
Sidewalk repairs on Laconia are currently being completed. The pedestrian bridges at Periwinkle, Barber Street, and Hardy Park have been resurfaced.
STORMWATER UPDATES
Ditch dredging continues, and the Stormwater Division has cleared a five‐year backlog within the last 12 months, improving drainage citywide.
Ditch regrading has commenced on South Wimbrow.
Baffle box maintenance on Indian River Drive is completed and this is in line with the city’s stormwater master plan as this supports water quality in the IRL.
Riviera and Gardenia ditch project has commenced.

Michael Nichols Memorial Golf Tournament Recap
Thank you to the 60 players who participated in the Michael Nichols Memorial Golf Tournament! Together, you helped raise over $2,400 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Alex Nichols Trust Fund. We also extend our sincere appreciation to the golf courses and businesses whose generous donations made this event possible, including Barefoot Bay Golf Club, Pointe West Golf Club, Indian River Golf Club, Sandridge Golf Club, The Habitat Golf Club, and The Hen House Restaurant.

SEBASTIAN GOLF COURSE
Understanding the Hidden Health Benefits of Golf
Golf is more rm health and well-being. Playing a full round typically means walking four to six miles, providing moderate-intensity cardiovascular exercise that can reduce the risk of heart disease, lower blood pressure, and improve overall heart health. Combined with the rotational motion of the swing, golf activates muscles in the legs, core, and upper body, while its low-impact nature helps protect joints and supports bone density and muscle retention.
The game also improves balance, coordination, and stability, which is especially important as people age and face higher risks of falls, frailty, and age-related muscle loss. Research shows that older golfers generally have better lower-body strength, mobility, and balance than non-golfers. Structured golf fitness programs can further enhance these benefits, improving functional movements like chair stands and reducing fall risk.
Cognitively, golf demands strategy, focus, and decision-making evaluating distances, wind, club choice, and course conditions helping keep the brain active and potentially slowing cognitive decline. Studies link golf with improvements in executive function and brain-health biomarkers.
Socially, golf stands out as an active yet accessible way to connect with others. Time spent on the course builds camaraderie, a sense of belonging, and emotional well-being. Because social support encourages people to stay active, golf becomes not just a pastime but an important component of holistic health, physical, mental, and social well-being.
Hurricane Prep Underway at Sebastian Airport
In anticipation of the coming hurricane season, Sebastian Municipal Airport has already begun preparing for its various roles in assisting the city and surrounding areas. We recently met with officials from FPL to review prior mobilizations hosted by the airport for their hurricane response teams. Recent storm responses include Ian and Nicole in 2022, and Milton in 2024. During the Milton response, the airport accommodated over 1,000 workers for power restoration and repairs (see photo). These crews not only handled Sebastian, but were also dispatched to Vero Beach for tornado damage and as far north as Melbourne, where the eye of the storm passed all from their base at our airport.
Once power is restored and the FPL teams break camp and move on, the City’s debris-removal process begins. This work uses pre-selected, state-approved sites on the airport to gather and process different types of storm debris from all over the city. Pre-selected contractors, under agreements with the City of Sebastian, track every truckload and ton of material through the airport sites to ensure everything is handled in accordance with state and federal guidelines for proper disposal. Those sites are undergoing approval submittals this month to be ready for the summer storm season ahead.
New state statutes also require the airport to assist the Florida Department of Transportation with disaster-response needs, if necessary. Despite all these demands, the airport makes every effort to keep at least one runway open to serve aviation response needs and keep our local tenant businesses operating. Sebastian Municipal Airport is committed to being a responsive asset for the City and the needs of the community.
