1 Salisbury SENIORS
I recommend that you read through the latest news from Jack Young Centre. The Centre is constantly changing – with a brighter look and as always a friendly welcome. The Café is bustling with a menu featuring seasonal foods. The Centre is open Monday to Saturday for senior residents, family and friends – you don’t need to be a member to come and try. ‘Age Friendly Salisbury’ is also featured on page 3.
This strategic document will be endorsed in the next month and will guide Council’s work over the next five years, ensuring that older people can age well in Salisbury. Yours sincerely,
Gillian Aldridge JP Mayor of Salisbury

A NEW AGEING STRATEGY FOR SALISBURY The City of Salisbury is committed to ensuring that our older residents can age well. The new ageing strategy will be an important document to guide new work. Older residents have been central to the development of an 'Age Friendly Salisbury' Strategy with many giving feedback to the questions ‘What is good about growing old in Salisbury?’ and ‘How could the experience of growing old in Salisbury be improved?’ As a result of these consultations some new activities will be evident over the coming years including: • The development of a Salisbury Seniors Alliance. This will be a forum that allows older people to have an ongoing voice in the implementation of the strategy and be able to make comments to Council about issues that affect their lives • The development of a Service Provider Alliance, which will consist of key industry partners within the area of ageing
7 Salisbury SENIORS
• An age friendly retail project that will ensure that local traders, shops and services are welcoming places for older people. This project will be in partnership with the State Government which will promote the benefits of the Seniors Card to local traders to expand benefits for local seniors • A calendar of forums will be delivered in partnership with COTA providing relevant information to older people; and • A targeted magazine for older residents will be produced several times a year to ensure that older people in Salisbury have access to information. The Age Friendly Salisbury strategy will be considered by Council towards the end of the year. Following endorsement, it will be available on the Salisbury website or phone 8406 8371.

SALISBURY AGEING & WELLBEING PROJECT The City of Salisbury’s Community Health and Wellbeing team is working with the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) and six other councils to undertake an ageing and wellbeing research project. The project is based on the work of Professor Martin Seligman, which has proven that focusing on the five elements of PERMA – Positive Emotion, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Achievement – results in an increase in resilience and a boost to mental wellbeing. The project has enabled Council to use new tools and strategies to measure and build wellbeing amongst a group of older residents who access community aged care services. The Salisbury project involved:
have undertaken the Wellbeing and Resilience training to learn the skills and have passed them on to a group of 15 residents; and • The integration of resilience and wellbeing skills into the day-to-day lives of the 15 participants.
• 40 older residents completing a baseline wellbeing measurement,
Key outcomes for participants across all participating councils include: reports of high levels of wellbeing, workshop participants (aged 65-102) ‘get’ the skills and are using them in their lives, and successful delivery of the program using live translations for Bosnian community members in the Salisbury program.
• The delivery of skills and strategies that build wellbeing and resilience. Six staff

MindfulnesS: What is it? Mindfulness is when you can stop reflecting over stuff that has happened in the past or worry about things that may happen in the future and instead fully appreciate or enjoy the moment. When a person is mindful, they can: • Focus on the present moment • Purposely concentrate on what’s happening around them (such as the sights, sounds and smells and even paying full attention to the person that is talking to them); and • Stop being judgemental about things they notice, or label things as ‘good’ or ‘bad’ Being mindful: • Helps you be more aware of yourself, your body and the environment • Helps slow down your thoughts • Helps with concentration and creativity • Helps you relax and cope with stress; and
• Helps improve sleep and can help you to cope with pain Mindfulness is something that everyone can develop through activities like meditation and yoga or by simply paying more attention during your daily activities. Why not look up information on mindfulness for breathing techniques and other ways to be more mindful? You’ll be glad you did! If you would like to learn more about Mindfulness, you might like to read: • Mindfulness on the Go (Peace in your Pocket) by Padraig O'Morain; or • Mindfulness for Health (A Practical Guide to Relieving Pain, Reducing Stress and Restoring Wellbeing) by Burch and Penman

VOLUNTEERING FOR HAPPINESS & HEALTH Did you know that volunteering was identified as the second greatest source of joy – the first was dancing! A study done by Argyle in 1996 found being happy plays an important role in health and many people find happiness in volunteering. So now its official – helping the community helps you. This is not surprising research, ask any volunteer and they will tell you they get to meet new people, strengthen ties in their community, broaden their support network and meet people with common interests. This social connection and feeling of being valued generates a great sense of happiness. But what about the health benefits of volunteering? Over the past two decades there has been a growing body of research that indicates volunteering provides individual health benefits in addition to social ones. In a report titled The Health Benefits of Volunteering: A Review of Recent Research it states “those who volunteer have lower mortality rates, greater functional ability and
13 Salisbury SENIORS
lower rates of depression later in life than those who do not volunteer”. Additionally the health benefits of volunteering have shown that older volunteers are the most likely to receive greater benefits from volunteering. So what are you waiting for? Take the first step to get happy and healthy by volunteering. In the next edition we’ll give you the top tips on volunteering with your grandchildren.
