NEW COMMUNITY GARDEN AT BURTON

The Burton Community Centre launches a new Herb and Vegetable Garden Program The Burton Community Centre Herb and Vegetable Garden Program aims to build on the unique set of skills everyone can bring to the group. Along with a volunteer qualified in horticulture, participants will learn about appropriate soil, compost, fertiliser, garden maintenance, climate, herbs and vegetables, how to plant, harvest, and how to cook with food from the garden. The program will be set to the seasons for example a growing season with planting in March, harvested in September. Making friends with oneâ€™s neighbours will be a benefit as well meeting people from our culturally diverse community. Contact the Burton Community Centre on 8280 8843 for start dates and times. Join Jeninda from Deckle Studio to make gift tags. Learn how recycled fabric can be used to make paper, using high quality pulp in bright colours and small circle pour moulds. Once dry these little circles are perfect for making gift tags, bunting or adding to anywhere that needs a spot of colour. Seeds can be added to pulp too, then the spots of paper can be planted in the garden after they have been used as a gift tag. All materials and lunch supplied.

Pathways to Hospitality Commencing 1 May 2017 Mondays and Tuesdays 9am to 3pm COST FREE This program covers the basic skills required to gain work in hospitality kitchens or roles associated with food preparation and handling, cooking and menu planning. By learning how to plan nutritional menus and use simple recipes, students will gain the valuable numeracy, literacy and workplace planning/organisation skills required to engage with entry level employment opportunities in the hospitality area or follow onto further education in this area.

By having a nutritional focus on the foods being cooked, students will also gain those valuable life skills to support themselves and their families to make better food choices that also fit within their budget. Most projects are done on your own with your own artwork from home.
