Weight Room Orientation

Ages: 15 & up

Are you new to the weight room? Attend a one hour orientation session to familiarize yourself with our cardio and weight equipment and learn how to use them safely and effectively.

DATES/TIMES: Orientations will be scheduled at a time that is agreed upon between the participant and the weight room attendant.

$20 private/$10 each for groups of 2 or more

PERSONAL TRAINING

Our certified trainers can provide training one on one or in group session. Whether you are new to fitness, need personalized motivation or sport specific training, our personal trainers can develop a program individualized to you and your specific goals. Our trainers can motivate you by assisting with goal setting, providing feedback and accountability. Speak to the Health and Fitness Program Coordinator for more information and to set up an appointment.

Private Personal Training Packages

All sessions are 1 hour. Sessions include you and your trainer in a one on one 60 minute session addressing your personal related goals.

Youth Personal Training Packages

All sessions are 1 hour. Sessions include you and your trainer in a one on one 60 minute session addressing your personal related goals.

Aquatic Personal Training Packages

All session are 45 minutes. The viscosity of the water provides an excellent source of resistance when incorporated into an Aquatic Personal Training Program. This resistance allows for muscle strengthening without the need of weights. This program is especially useful for those with arthritis, healing fractured bones, or who are overweight.

The youth training sessions highlight the importance of a proper mobility warm up, how to activate and engage your working muscles, safe training mechanics, and stretches needed for a thorough cool down. These private or semi-private sessions educate youth with lifelong skills to keep them healthy. Youth training specializes as an introduction to lifting or to improving athleticism. The programming is individualized to each youth’s needs, whether they need attention for mental health conditions or chronic diseases, diverse learning styles, healthy physique training methods, or are working towards high performance athletic goals

Meet the Personal Trainers

Bianca Hoppe has a professional background in the medical field and is a certified BCRPA Group Fitness, Aquatic Fitness, Third Age, Weight Training, Spin and Pilates instructor. She is also a certified Personal Trainer on land and in water. Bianca is fascinated by the human body and all its capabilities and the science that always discovers new and improved workouts to either get people in better shape, helps them to recover from injuries or improve their everyday mobility.

Roché Rossouw is a BCRPA personal trainer, group fitness instructor and health coach. She is certified in Older Adult, Steady Feet , and Precision Nutrition Level 2, and enjoys teaching people to use the best technique possible when they exercise. “I believe everybody who is able to move, can start somewhere and get stronger if they use good exercise technique, consistently show up to train and try to have fun

Gail Westgate has studied fitness theory, weight training and personal training for over a decade. Gail has focused on helping people achieve positive health and fitness changes that support their day to day life. She has learned from personal experience how to overcome fears and blocks and develop new skills that promote well being and accomplishment. Gail is especially adept at engaging with clients to realize important life style challenges and integrate new strengths and interest to their day to day life. Her good humour and positive attitude have inspired many people to make long lasting changes and gain confidence in their abilities.

Kimberley Gage is a BCRPA Personal and Older Adult Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor and Yoga Teacher. A cheerleader at heart, she is passionate about helping clients meet their health, fitness and mobility goals, regardless of their ability. Kimberley employs a variety of strength and mobility techniques to increase mindbody awareness and improve

from a love for the outdoors. An avid hiker, trail runner, and all-around adventurer. She believes strength training means keeping your body strong so you can continue getting out and getting after it and move how you want to move. Paloma is a BCRPA certified Personal Trainer, Group Fitness Instructor and SCHWINN certified Spin Instructor. Paloma is an advocate for finding the fun in a fitness program and helping others to feel energized and find confidence in their own personal fitness journey.

kinesiologist with a B.Sc in Exercise Science, with a focused career in high performance sport and chronic disease management. Working with Shay is a trusted choice, as she’s able to help those with osteoporosis, diabetes, cancer and recovering cancer, stroke and cardiorespiratory conditions, muscular and motor control adaptations, diverse mental health conditions, and clients with adapted mobilities. She is driven to help each individual achieve their goal and will create an atmosphere to encourage it.

The Hearts in Motion Walking Group is designed to encourage people to participate in regular physical activity by walking. Walking is a great way to boost health and energy and it's easily incorporated into any lifestyle. You can reduce risk factors such as stress, blood pressure, blood cholesterol, and body fat by incorporating thirty minutes of physical activity most days of the week. Walks will occur in various locations around the community.

ActivAge™ is a free group-led physical activity program for inactive older adults. It introduces participants to physical activity and reinforces their commitment to incorporate it into their daily lives. The program is progressive with planned physical activities (stretching, activity, and cool-down) based on ActivAge™ training. This fun and social program will help get participants moving in a relaxed environment with like-minded people. The program focuses on improving activities associated with daily living, strengthening muscles used dayto-day. Each class incorporates physical activities that engage participants, and features in-class discussions and resources to improve overall health and physical wellbeing.

Our Prenatal Fitness program allows you to experience the benefits of exercise during any trimester and meet other parents to be. Our certified prenatal instructor will lead you through safe cardiovascular training, flexibility, and mobility work as well as muscle strengthening and conditioning. It is recommended that participants consult with their health care provider before beginning a fitness program while pregnant. Please note that a CSEP (Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology) Pregnancy Questionnaire Form must be filled out and returned to the Complex prior to the first class

In partnership with the BCEHS Community Paramedicine Program this engaging and supportive walking program is designed for graduates of the Brave Hearts Cardiac Rehabilitation program. Participants will walk the paved pathway around the Complex as well as the Millennium Park trails, while discussing current concerns and supporting each other.

Formerly the Brave Hearts Walk & Talk, this program has now expanded to included people living with a variety of chronic health conditions.

Therapeutic Yoga for Back Care

Would you like to take care of your back and prevent injuries? Or maybe you have chronic back issues such as low back pain. Lead by Regina, a certified, experienced Yoga Therapist (C-IAYT), this program focuses on building confidence and a sense of safety to support a healthy back. Participants will build strength and develop increased awareness of the spinal curves to explore movements safely as well as how to use a full yet gentle breath and connect movements of the inner core. Each class includes a relaxation practice at the end that will support managing pain and stress. The series will be adapted to individual needs of the participants.

By incorporating relaxation, breath awareness and mindfulness, this practice becomes a complete yogic experience guided by Regina, a certified, experienced Yoga Therapist (C-IYAT). Curious about spin but not sure where to start? This one-hour workshop is the perfect introduction! Your instructor will guide you through proper bike setup and riding form to ensure a comfortable, safe fit tailored to your body (about 15 minutes). Then, enjoy a 45-minute ride exploring a variety of drills, tempos, and body positions that will help you feel confident and ready to join any spin class. Whether you’re brand new to cycling or just want to brush up on the basics, this session will leave you feeling empowered, informed, and ready to ride!

More people are using weighted vests to increase strength during daily walks. This workshop will introduce you to the benefits of rucking and teach you the easiest way to start incorporating weight. I will also discuss different types of weighted vests on the market. Please bring a close-fitted backback such as a hiking daypack. We will also do a short walk in the complex trails.

beginners: practice blowing bubbles in the bathtub and lowering ears into the water while reclined register in the appropriate level for safety reasons and for building swimming confidence avoid wearing long baggy shorts or tshirts as these cause drag; choose snug fitting swimming attire goggles that fit well can help with swimmer comfort masks that cover the nose are NOT recommended as this hinders safety skill development tie up long hair away from the face or cover it with a swim cap swim for fun and practice the skills you’ve learned while you take a break from lessons ask your instructor if there is something particular you can practice on your own time to improve

Register in the Tot program based on age of the participant. All other levels are registered based on ability and instructor recommendations. Participants inappropriately registered will be withdrawn from their program.

Group swim lesson costs range from $38.50 for 5 x 30 minute lessons, up to $85 for 10 x 45 minute lessons.

We have limited private swim lesson instruction available through a waiting list, cost is $130 for 5 x 30 minute lessons.

Kayak in the Pool - Paddle Practice

Ages: 16 & up

Bring your own kayak to the pool on selected days to practice your skills in a safe and warm environment. 4 kayaks will be permitted each session. Please register at least 48 hours in advance to avoid cancellation. Fee covers 1 kayak and 1 paddler for each day; regular admission rates apply to additional paddlers sharing a kayak.

Formerly known as synchronized swimming or water ballet, this program offers a beginner-friendly introduction to Artistic Swimming. Participants will learn fundamental sculling techniques and basic movements in the water. A minimum of Swimmer 5 skills and the ability to swim up to 400 meters continuously are required for this class. Nose plugs will be needed, although not for the initial sessions. Emergency First Aid/Basic

Ages: 15 & up

Basic 1 day course offering lifesaving first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR-C with AED) skills for the workplace or home. Course meets legislation requirements for provincial/territorial worker safety and insurance boards and includes the latest first aid and CPR guidelines for Occupational First Aid - Basic. This course is delivered through blended learning where half is done online at your own pace, prior to classroom day.

Online module: 4 hours at your own pace, completee prior to classroom session.

Standard First Aid/Intermediate

Ages: 15 & up

Comprehensive 16-hour course offering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR-C and AED) skills for those seeking a more in-depth understanding of first aid emergencies. This course meets the requirements for WorkSafe BC Occupational First Aid - Intermediate. This is a required course for National Lifeguard training and is delivered through blended learning where half is done online at your own pace, prior to classroom day.

BRONZE CROSS

ASSISTANT LIFEGUARD

This course begins the transition from lifesaving to lifeguarding and prepares candidates for responsibilities as Assistant Lifeguards. Candidates build on the skills they learned in the Medallion. Lifesaving skills will be strengthened and expanded as they begin to apply the principles and techniques of active surveillance in aquatic facilities.

* Bronze Cross emphasizes the importance of teamwork and communication in preventing and responding to aquatic emergencies. This course is required for National Lifeguard training.

SPRING HOCKEY LEAGUE

The Spring Hockey League will run for 7 weeks and take place one evening a week running from the week of April 1st until the week of May 10th. Registration Fee includes all 7 sessions along with a league jersey and wrap up play on the final week. League Organizer will take the registrations and break them down into equal teams prior to the season starting. Volunteer Coaches are the foundation of this league and are essential to its success, if you or someone you know would like to coach, please contact Sport & Recreation Program Coordinator Alex Craig at acraig@powellriver.ca.
