Do you want to know where to find amazing Christmas lights and holiday displays this season? The 6th Annual Light Up qathet is back for 2025. Do you put on an amazing holiday display? If you're decorating your home for the holidays this year, we want to know!

Please submit a picture of your decorated home along with your address to srahier@powellriver.ca by December 17th to be added to the 2025 Light Up qathet map for the community to enjoy! We will also post all entry photos (photo only – addresses will be on the map only) to our Facebook page on December 18th and then YOU can vote on your favourite display! PLUS, there will be another winner by random draw!

The winners will receive a 3 month Family Pass to the Recreation Complex and a holiday gift basket. Voting will conclude on December 22nd at 12pm. This contest is open to ALL of the qathet region.

DROP IN SWIMMING LEGEND

SWIMMING LESSON TIPS FOR SUCCESS:

beginners: practice blowing bubbles in the bathtub and lowering ears into the water while reclined register in the appropriate level for safety reasons and for building swimming confidence avoid wearing long baggy shorts or t-shirts as these cause drag; choose snug fitting swimming attire

goggles that fit well can help with swimmer comfort

masks that cover the nose are NOT recommended as this hinders safety skill development tie up long hair away from the face or cover it with a swim cap swim for fun and practice the skills you’ve learned while you take a break from lessons ask your instructor if there is something particular you can practice on your own time to improve

Aquatics FALL

SWIM LESSONS

Register in the Tot program based on age of the participant. All other levels are registered based on ability and instructor recommendations. Participants inappropriately registered will be withdrawn from their program.

Group Swim lesson cost ranges from $31 for 4 x 30 minute lessons, up to $85 for 10 x 45 minute lessons. Limited private swim lesson instruction available through waiting list, cost is $130 for 5 x 30-minute lessons.

An opportunity to increase water comfort and practice the building blocks for swimming. Beginner is for people who want to learn how to put their faces in the water, float, and other basic swimming skills. Intermediate is for people who have mastered the basic swimming skills and want to learn front crawl, treading water, and other deep end skills.

Kayak in the Pool - Paddle Practice

Water Wellness

Ages: 19 & up

These shallow water exercises will help you maintain strength, balance, agility, and coordination. Ideal for seniors beginning an exercise program, and those suffering from arthritis.

Session 1

Ages: 16 & up

Bring your own kayak to the pool on selected days to practice your skills in a safe and warm environment. 4 kayaks will be permitted each session. Please register at least 48 hours in advance to avoid cancellation. Fee covers 1 kayak and 1 paddler for each day; regular admission rates apply to additional paddlers sharing a kayak.

ARTISTICswimming swimming

Formerly known as synchronized swimming or water ballet, this program offers a beginner-friendly introduction to Artistic Swimming. Participants will learn fundamental sculling techniques and basic movements in the water. A minimum of Swimmer 5 skills and the ability to swim up to 400 meters continuously are required for this class. Nose plugs will be needed, although not for the initial sessions. Additional details will be shared by the instructor during class. For ages 12+

BRONZE MEDALLION

Candidates must be a minimum of 13 years old or have their Bronze Star certification.

Bronze Medallion teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education: judgment, knowledge, skill, and fitness. Candidates acquire the assessment and problemsolving skills needed to make good decisions in, on and around the water. Endurance standard includes a 400m swim that must be completed in under 12 minutes. Bronze Medallion completion is required to enroll in assistant lifeguard training.

NATIONAL LIFEGUARD

RECERTIFICATION

Lifeguard certification expires after 2 years. Renew your award by attending this clinic to perform all required skills and review knowledge for NL. Fitness ability, first aid treatments and lifeguarding scenarios are all tested and evaluated by the national standard. Must provide proof of previously held award to instructor. Bring bag lunch for short break.

NATIONAL LIFEGUARD

100% attendance required. Recognized as the standard measure of lifeguard performance in Canada, NL education develops the fundamental values, judgment, knowledge, skills and fitness required by lifeguards to provide effective safety supervision in swimming pool environments. Course includes Airway Management and Oxygen Administration (AMOA) certification.

Emergency First Aid

Ages: 15 & up

Basic 1 day course offering lifesaving first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR-C with AED) skills for the workplace or home. Course meets legislation requirements for provincial/territorial worker safety and insurance boards and includes the latest first aid and CPR guidelines for Occupational First Aid - Basic. This course is delivered through blended learning where half is done online at your own pace, prior to classroom day.

Online Module: 4 hours at your own pace, complete by September 18 Friday September 19 from 8:30am - 12:30pm $100/per person

Standard First Aid

Ages: 15 & up

Comprehensive 16-hour course offering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR-C and AED) skills for those seeking a more in-depth understanding of first aid emergencies. This course is delivered through blended learning where half is done online at your own pace, prior to classroom day. This course meets the requirements for WorkSafe BC Occupational First AidIntermediate. This is a required course for National Lifeguard training. Certification valid for 3 years. This program is specifically geared towards children who have no experience skating and need assistance with learning the FUNdamentals. If your child is already signed up for minor hockey or can skate, then that is too advanced for this class.

Each week in Monday Creations Club, kids will explore a unique theme ranging from mad science experiments and nature-inspired crafts to upcycled art and global DIY creations. One week might have you making dizzy lava lamps, the next building a bird feeder, designing mini-zines, or even sculpting with air-dry clay. This hands-on program is all about imagination, exploration, and having fun with your creativity. Come ready to get a little messy, learn new skills, and take home something awesome every week!

From classic chocolate chip cookies and mini pizzas to fruit galettes, pretzels, and no-bake delights, each week offers a delicious new challenge designed for young bakers to mix, measure, and master. All supplies included – just bring your appetite and your imagination!

The Home Alone Program is designed to provide children with the necessary skills and knowledge to be safe and responsible when home alone for short periods of time. This course will help children understand how to prevent problems, handle reallife situations, and keep them safe and constructively occupied.

Babysitter's Training

Ages: 11 & up

The Babysitter's Training Course is aimed at young people turning 12 years of age within the calendar year or older who want to demonstrate their capabilities by completing the course under responsible direction. All session are 45 minutes. The viscosity of the water provides an excellent source of resistance when incorporated into an Aquatic Personal Training Program.
