City congratulates Penticton Vees on new WHL franchise

Congratulations to the Penticton Vees on officially joining the Western Hockey League (WHL). The WHL confirmed that the Penticton Vees have been accepted as the league’s 23rd franchise and will begin play in the 2025/26 season. The Vees are the first expansion team in nearly two decades in the WHL, as the last expansion franchise was granted in 2006. The estimated economic impact of a WHL franchise, for a mid-size market team, is approximately $7.1 million in direct impact and $14.9 million in indirect impact. The Vees will continue to play out of the 5,000 seat South Okanagan Events Centre (SOEC). The Vees play their first WHL game against the Kelowna Rockets at the SOEC on Sept. 26, 2025. Anticipate minor delays as construction ramps up The City of Penticton is making improvements to streets and infrastructure near you. Construction season is officially underway, with multiple projects planned throughout the community. Residents should anticipate minor delays and traffic flow changes in the coming weeks and months, including along South Main Street, the neighbourhood surrounding Penticton Avenue at Kensington Street and the Duncan Reservoir, Eckhardt Avenue, plus minor roadworks throughout the city. Drivers are reminded to slow down and follow the instructions on posted signage or from traffic control personnel. Watch for cyclists and pedestrians.
