Paramount High School Athletics Welcome back to school! Summer was spent preparing Paramount High School fall sport athletes for their upcoming seasons. Football, cross country, volleyball, girls tennis and boys water polo quickly got underway with practices and tryouts. Paramount winter sports also got off to an early start. Both boys and girls soccer had successful summer camps as well as boys and girls wrestling. Water polo athletes traveled to compete in the Hawaiian International Tournament and the girls team brought home a third place trophy. Congratulations girls water polo! Seniors, David Yax and Rosemelly Jimenez, along with juniors, Elia Tapia-Gomez and Leslie Saavedra, traveled to Hawaii on July 31 along with their head coach and athletic director, Rachel Dominguez. The girls combined with 5 other athletes from the greater San Diego area made up the team that brought home the 3rd place trophy. David Yax, and
graduates, Richard Prado and Ivan Martinez, also joined a team of 7 athletes from the greater San Diego area and took 9th place overall at the tournament, winning 2 of the 6 games played. The girls lost to San Marcos High School on the first day of play who later took first place at the tournament. The girls tied their next game against Australia’s Newberg team and this kept them alive
in the tournament bracket. They continued to win their next 2 games defeating NorCal and Honolulu. The girls lost 7-10 in the semi-finals to the Hawaiian Islands combo team. They then beat West Valley High 10-4 to earn them the 3rd place trophy currently being displayed in the Paramount High School’s Field House trophy case. All of the girls’ games were played at Punahou
School in Honolulu and boys played at Iolani School just outside of Waikiki. Not only was it a great week of playing water polo, but the student athletes were also able to sightsee and enjoy the local cuisine. The group spent time surfing at the beach in Waikiki, visiting the Kaniakapupu ruins, hiking to Lulumahu falls, paying respect at Pearl Harbor, snorkeling at Hanauma Bay,
and enjoying watching Chiefs Luau at the sea life park. This was an overall great experience for these Paramount athletes who fundraised all year to attend the tournament. The Paramount High School Athletic Department appreciates the community’s continued support! Be sure to come out and cheer on the fall sports athletes. August 25 marks the Pirates first home football game against Mission Hills High School. The Senior Campus Associated Student Body leaders will be selling spirit wear at the game so that you can really show your Pirate pride and school spirit. We are all looking forward to a great fall season! On behalf of the Paramount Athletic Department and the entire Pirate family, we wish all of our supporters a happy start to the new school year. Deportes de la Preparatoria de Paramount ¡Bienvenidos de nuevo a la escuela! El verano se fue en la preparación para la próxima temporada de los deportes de otoño de la Preparatoria Paramount. Futbol americano, travesía de campo, voleibol, tenis de mujeres y el equipo de polo acuático de los hombres rápidamente se puso en marcha con las prácticas y pruebas. Los deportes de invierno de Paramount también tuvieron un comienzo temprano. Tanto como él equipo de fútbol de mujeres y de los hombres que tuvieron campamentos de verano con éxito así también les fue a los muchachos y muchachas del equipo de luchas. Los atletas del equipo de polo acuático viajaron a competir en el Torneo Internacional de Hawái y el equipo de las mujeres trajo a casa un trofeo de tercer lugar. ¡Felicidades a las muchachas del equipo de polo acuático! En el grado 12 David Yax y Rosemelly Jiménez, con las del 11 grado, Elia Tapia-Gomez y Leslie Saavedra,
viajaron a Hawái el día 31 de julio con su entrenadora principal Rachel Domínguez. Las muchachas combinadas con 5 atletas del área metropolitana de San Diego completaron el equipo que trajo a casa el trofeo de 3er lugar. David Yax, y los graduados Richard Prado e Iván Martínez también se unieron a un equipo de 7 atletas del área metropolitana de San Diego y tomaron el 9no lugar en la clasificación general en el torneo ganando 2 de 6 partidos jugados. Las muchachas perdieron a la Preparatoria de San Marcos en el primer día de juego que luego tomaron el primer lugar del torneo. Las muchachas empataron el siguiente juego en contra del equipo de Australia Newberg y esto las mantuvo vivas en la categoría del torneo. Continuaron ganando los siguientes 2 juegos ganándole a NorCal y a Honolulu. Las muchachas perdieron 7-10 en las semifinales al equipo combo de las Islas Hawaianas. Luego le ganaron a la Preparatoria de West Valley 10-4 para
ganar el trofeo del 3er lugar que actualmente se está exhibiéndose en la vitrina de trofeos en la casa de campo de la Preparatoria Paramount. Todos los juegos de las muchachas se jugaron en la escuela de Punahou en Honolulu y los muchachos jugaron en la escuela de Iolani afuera de Waikiki. No solo fue una gran semana de juego de polo acuático, pero los atletas también pudieron realizar paseos turísticos y disfrutar de la cocina local. El grupo pasó tiempo surfeando en la playa de Waikiki, visitando las ruinas de Kaniakapupu, escalando a las cascadas de Lulumahu, pagando su respeto en Pearl Harbor, buceando en la Bahía de Hanauma, y disfrutando viendo al Chiefs Luau en el parque de vida mariana. Esta fue una gran experiencia en general para los atletas de Paramount que recaudaron fondos durante todo el año para asistir al torneo. ¡El Departamento de Atlético de la Preparatoria de Para-

su orgullo de ser Pirata y su espíritu escolar. ¡Estamos ansiosos por la gran temporada de otoño!
