Summer Fun Café “Summer Fun Cafe”
Great things continue to happen in Paramount Unified School District! During the long summer break P.U.S.D. and the City of Paramount Parks & Recreation Dept. collaborated in a joint effort to offer free breakfast, free lunch and free recreation to children of our community. Children who eat nutritious meals and participate in safe activities during the summer are more creative and productive at school and at home. According to a recently released report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the number of families struggling to put food on the table has skyrocketed. This summer the “Summer Fun Café” served over 100,000 nutritious meals and over the past eight years since the program began close to a million nutritious meals have been served to children 18

The program which is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture only requires serving breakfast and lunch, P.U.S.D. staff did not want to just provide meals especially with the increase in childhood obesity. P.U.S.D. and the City of Paramount Parks and Recreation Dept. teamed up to provide two hours of recreational activity includ-
ing fitness, sports and arts & crafts opportunities between breakfast and lunch service. Children need access to healthy food all year long, not just when school is in session. The summer meal program helps to ensure children continue receiving adequate nutrition during summer so that they return
¡Cosas grandiosas continúan pasando en el Distrito Escolar Unificado de Paramount! Durante las vacaciones de verano, P.U.S.D. y el Departamento de Recreación de la Ciudad de Paramount se unieron en un esfuerzo por ofrecer comida nutritiva y actividades a los niños de nuestra comunidad. Los niños que toman comidas nutritivas y participan en actividades seguras durante el verano son más creativos y productivos en casa y en la escuela. This summer, teachers from pre-school through high school participated in professional learning focused on topics that included how to use new Language Arts textbooks in grades K-5, techniques for teaching middle school students to defend a point of view in writing, how to teach multiplication of fractions for conceptual understanding and an overview of new, Next Generation Science Standards. When teachers participate in professional learning opportunities such as these they have the skills they need to put what they learn into action with students. In addition, they have time to collaborate with colleagues, plan common lessons and share
