PLTW Computer Science Essentials Launches at Paramount High School-West Campus
S
tarting with the 2018-2019 school year, Paramount Unified School District has added to its growing Career & Technical Education (CTE) program a new and exciting pathway in Computer Science that utilizes Project Lead the Way (PLTW) national curriculum for 9th grade students.
Students first learn coding fundamentals necessary to create apps.
The first course offered in the series, PLTW Computer Science Essentials, introduces students to coding fundamentals in order to create applications (apps). PLTW Computer Science Essentials will lay the foundation for careers related to technology by incorporating 21st century skills.Throughout this course, students will have a chance to work in teams to solve problems, investigate a wide range of careers in computer science and apply technical skills to solve authentic problems. Alicia Megofna, Assistant Principal at Paramount High School West Campus states, “Technology is all around us. It is important for our students to be ready to compete on the global scale and prepare for jobs that do not exist yet.” Excitement was shared by the students. Diana Aguirre, a student in the course shares, “In 7th grade I took Automation & Robotics as my elective, which introduced me to Javascript, and my interest in learning the language of computers only grew.” Throughout the CTE Computer Science Pathway, students will have an opportunity to further their interest and gain valuable skills while taking a
series of classes leading up to learning about PLTW Cybersecurity during their senior year. The course might be best summed up by Deringer Dietz, the PLTW Computer Science Essentials teacher, who eagerly says, “What excites me about providing this course to my students is the structured creativity programming has to offer. It allows them the opportunity to take an imagined concept and through logical steps improve upon an existing idea or create an exclusively original product that changes people’s lives. It is my hope that they find joy in creation and satisfaction in challenging work.”
Lanzamientos de Elementos Esenciales de Ciencias Informáticas PLTW en la Preparatoria de Paramount Plantel Oeste

omenzando con el año escolar 2018-2019, el Distrito Escolar Unificado Paramount ha agregado a su creciente programa de Educación Profesional y Técnica (CTE) una nueva y emocionante vía en Ciencias Informáticas que utiliza el plan de estudios nacional Project Lead the Way (PLTW) para estudiantes del noveno grado. El primer curso ofrecido en la serie, Elementos Esenciales de Ciencias Informáticas PLTW, introduce a los estudiantes los fundamentos de codificación con el fin crear aplicaciones. Elementos Esenciales de Ciencias Informáticas PLTW sentará las bases para las carreras relacionadas con la tecnología mediante la incorporación de las habilidades del siglo XXI. A lo largo de este curso, los estudiantes tendrán la oportunidad de trabajar en equipos para resolver problemas, investigar una amplia gama de carreras en ciencias informáticas y aplicar habilidades técnicas para resolver problemas auténticos. Alicia Megofna, Subdirectora de la Preparatoria de Paramount del Plantel Oeste dice: "La tecnología nos rodea por todas partes. Diana Aguirre, una estudiante en el curso comparte: "En séptimo grado tomé Automatización y Robótica como mi clase electiva, lo cual me introdujo a Javascript, y mi interés en aprender el lenguaje de las computadoras solo creció.” A lo largo de la Vía de Ciencias Informáticas CTE, los estudiantes tendrán la
oportunidad de aumentar su interés y adquirir valiosas habilidades mientras están tomando una serie de clases que conducen a Ciberseguridad PLTW durante su último año en la preparatoria. El curso podría ser mejor resumido por Deringer Dietz, el maestro de Elementos de Ciencias Informáticas PLTW que con entusiasmo dice: "Lo que me entusiasma de ofrecer este curso a mis estudiantes es la creatividad estructurada que ofrece la programación. Les permite la oportunidad de tomar un concepto imaginado y a través de pasos lógicos, mejorar una idea existente o crear un producto exclusivamente original que cambie la vida de las personas. Espero que encuentren alegría en la creación y la satisfacción en el trabajo desafiante.”
