Family, Career and Community Familia, Carrera y Líderes Comunitarios de América Leaders of America

Giselle Ruiz and Guadalupe Quirarte, Paramount High School students, competed in a national competition and received silver medals at the annual Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) conference in San Diego, California on July 3-7, 2016. Over 5,100 FCCLA students were present at the conference. FCCLA is a national organization sponsored by Home Economics Careers and Technology Programs that focuses on developing career and leadership skills for members to be successful in home, community, and work life. The fundamental mission is to promote personal growth and leadership development through Family and Consumer Science Education. After winning competitions at regional and statewide Future Homemakers of America (FHA) meetings, Giselle and Guadalupe were invited to compete at the national conference in San Diego where there were 450 students competing in the same project. Competing in the STAR event Food Innovations, this event focused on demonstrating knowledge of the basic concepts of food product development by creating an original prototype formula, testing the product through focus groups, and developing a marketing strategy. Their target goal was to help parents give their children a meal that would satisfy both their hunger and their appetite with the right amount of fiber and not containing the excessive amount of calories other meals have.

By strategically picking foods that attract a child’s attention while also pleasing their taste buds and their parents’ approval, they decided to gather a group of students from Hollydale middle school as they reflect the median age of the testing range. Surveying children after giving them a meal and gathering the data, both Giselle and Guadalupe worked on improving their prototype. After finalizing a prototype formula and conducting several surveys and gathering the data, they settled an official prototype. Rising Senior Zoe Pamonang and rising Junior Daniela Soriano Veliz also attended the conference with their advisor, Mrs. Aileen Tanimoto in order to have an insight through workshops and presentations about how to strengthen their leadership skills and enhance their own projects for the upcoming school year. By attending a workshop that took the students to the FIDM headquarter in San Diego, they took short classes that gave them a glance into interior design and pattern making. Other available workshops in the conference included, the organization MADD and FACTS and bread dough sculpting. All four students also traded California pins with students from other states as over 45 states were present in addition to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. Through the five day conference, all four Pirates felt the FCCLA National Conference led them to strengthen their character

development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, practical knowledge, and career preparation. The FHA club has been helping our community since 1984, and since the club’s inception, Mrs. Tanimoto and Ms. Lash, have led this important campus club. Mrs. Tanimoto donated an abundance of time outside of normal school hours to prepare the team. With the guidance of Mrs. Tanimoto and her benevolence, the students worked on their project to ensure that their display and presentations met each of the requirements outlined in the rubric for the national competition. Giselle and Guadalupe are grateful for Mrs. Tanimoto’s support as it led them to strive to represent Paramount with Pirate pride. Enthusiastic and motivated, all four girls had a memorable time at the conference with Mrs. Tanimoto. As we honor the victory of these students, Paramount High School continues to support clubs that allow our students to grow in a wide range of levels. Winning the regional and statewide competition and placing Silver at Nationals competition, Paramount High School’s FHA-FCCLA club looks forward to continue inspiring students to explore their abilities. The potential of our students is ceaseless and it takes compassionate teachers such as Mrs. Tanimoto to unleash each student’s capabilities. Guadalupe Quirarte, PHS Student Class of 2016 Valedictorian
